I understand that Odin is a very, very (let me re-state that), extremely popular method of returning the phone to stock.
However, a small handful of us users don't use Odin. I know I don't, I can't. I run Ubuntu and must use heimdall. So, why not include instructions for heimdall? It runs on windows and linux.
I second this; since heimdall is like custom ROMs "based on samsung/stock but made way better by someone at XDA" And we're starting to see that it works with SGS2 as well(after a tiny id tweak).
Sure it takes a little more understanding to use, but is that really a bad thing?
Plain and simple answer?? People like easy.
Even Odin is too complicated for some of the people here. Idk how many times I've had to describe the difference between odin one click and the full odin. If they can't figure out that if you have to do anything other than hit the start button it's not one click, heimdall will make their brains explode.
Plus throwing another program in there that's even slightly more complicated to a panicked noob who has just (mod edit) his phone up because he didn't know what he was doing would not be the easiest course for the person who is trying help.

What's the difference between one click and full? /sarcasm lol
Think about this:
How many newbs actually attempt to mod their phone with a rom first? I know I didn't, I actually went after rooting my phone first.
I know there's a process for heimdall and odin (one click and full 1.87). After rooting, they start to dabble in roms. Most of which can be installed via odin or heimdall.
So, why not ask those wonderful dev's to post the install info twice(easy odin or more in-depth heimdall). Sorry, I know it's a bit more work, but people that don't have access to odin will be even more greatful (perhaps even get more donations).
Just two more cents added to the thought.

I'm with op on this. I found heimdall, but couldn't find any stock roms to flash if anything goes bad. I don't have windows, refuse to buy it, and my machine caouldnt run a vm to save its life.
If the devs are too strained for time to make a heimdall post, could they at least make a post that links to a half decent guide?

its just so easy, odin tht is!
Odin and Windows 7
For those using Windows 7 and Odin, here was something I just found out. You need (should) use Windows XP service pack 2 compatibility mode and administrator mode with it. It will stop Factoryfs.rfs from locking up.
Quick Windows lesson: right click on odin, troubleshoot compatibility, "Troubleshoot program",select The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now - next, select Windows XP (Service pack 2), Start program, and follow the rest of the selections to close

There's no need to be an ass about it. This *IS* the q&a part of the forum. You shouldn't expect everyone here to be as fully omnipotent as you seem to think of yourself.
If you dont feel like contributing, you shouldn't be in a forum.
And for your information, It is easy to tell what files are needed, but it is not broadcast to the clouds where to get the correct files. I'm not about to risk downloading just anything to put on my phone. I rely on it too much for that. There's a reason warez aren't allowed here.

cool story bro.
the reason for the sarcasm is that so many people are coming here to get spoonfed the **** that other people learned by doing their own fkn research...all the info is already here in these forums, but so many people are just fkn lazy and its annoying that people get pissed because others dont hand them the fkn info on a silver platter.
Notice I didn't ask to be spoonfed information. I asked where it was. I still haven't found where it tells you to use Odin to flash your phone through heimdall. Just that heimdall is there.
Now pull your head out of your ass and say(type) something useful or ignore the post.

you DONT USE ODIN!! havent you read a fkn word?
the FILES you need are in the ODIN tar file....
lets just think about this for a damn minute...
HEIMDALL is an opensource version of ODIN meant to be multi platform....so logic says that its going to use the same ODIN files...other wise why make a tool that takes a special set of files that nobody has??
christ, its simple LOGIC here. i know that concept fails so many people....
Ok guys enough. This thread has become bickering back and forth. Please do your research as all the info is there, you just need to find it.

I feel I've made a terrible (and stupid) mistake. I decided to unroot my phone from cyanogen roms. I read a how to guide that I guess was outdated because now I have android 1.0 firmware. The guidw was [how to] unroot by tubaking182 (absolutely zero offense to him, not his fault, I'm stupid, etc etc.) So I now have stock version 1.0. There's no check for system updates under about phone in settings so I can't do that. There are file manager apps that I could use to rename the necessary updates into update.zip, but there's no apps available like download crutch so I can download them. I also can't enter recovery. It gives me a triangle with an exclamation inside next to a image of a phone and that's it and I have no idea how to install an update without recovery mode. As I'm sure you've noticed by now, I'm the epitome of newb and feel free to laugh at my failure. I just really need someone to help me and would be eternally grateful. In all likelihood, I'll need step by step instructions on what to do. I know this is a lot to ask and I've really done nothing to earn this help... I really just need assistance. Thank you to anyone who helps me in advance
Not to be an asshole and say "Shoulda Coulda Woulda" but you really should have done your research before embarking on bricking your phone.
ItsAndroidsWorld had many videos on You Tube. Look for ones on how to root, then how to install the death spl, then look for the ones with Super D or FastTest .. as it seems as though they are probably the best roms for everyday use at this point.
I've found that using these videos via You Tube is the easiest way to go.
Good Luck.

yeah man no problem. good luck.
Don't do anything. In a day or two you get an OTA update.
You can force the update like people have mentioned, but as long as you can hold off for a day or two you dont need to.
BTW, at some point you will see the E or 3G icon downloading like crazy and you dont know why. It is downloading the update. Stay away from task killers and in my experience it is good to be around wifi.
Just relax.

I am obviously a NOOB. I am reading previous posts, but this is way more complicated than I expected.
I just want to get any factory firmware on my Captivate so that I can sell it. Right now I can't enter Download mode or Recovery mode via button combinations. I have tried for hours now.
Are there any simple directions that actually give links to what I need to download. ie...What Odin Files, etc.

And if your Captivate boots, you don't need button combinations to enter download mode. You need to download the SDK, put the Captivate in a USB debug mode, and then do "adb reboot download" to get there.

Why don't you just do a factory reset and delete your files from the phone ?
If your unable to just go in download mode and use the Odin one-click then you clearly need to spend more time reading. This is also a big red flag that you could turn your phone (effortlessly) into a brick.
Your choices are:
A) Read up, learn and invest time in it (not just 30min and a simple how-to then jump the guns with it)
B) Just delete your stuff, do a factory reset and sell it like it is.
A more tech savvy user will mod it to its liking. Why do the job for them if your not confortable doing it in the first place? It's not like your going to use it again, your selling it.
Yup I agree - if you already have a Stock phone - don't screw with it. Just do the factory reset which will wipe the phone back to stock anyways - and if you want to go that extra step you could format the internal SDCard from within the phone menu.
If it aint broke - don't play with it! (Well my real motto is If it ain't broke tweak it! but.. for you it doesn't apply)
I don't necessarily WANT to sell it. I want to give it a fair chance. I am used to an iPhone but I wanted to see what all the talk about the androids is about. I heard that this is all SO simple. Maybe so for some. I am just spoiled by the user friendliness of apple i guess.
Anyway, i haven't given up completely. I am gonna try all this again. I just don't have Hours upon Hours to define all the stuff that I'm reading. I am just surprised how difficult it is to make this thing anywhere near the same level as an iPhone. I'm sure it's easy for most. Maybe I'll figure it out....
Jumping in the conversation since we are on the subject. I rooted with z4root and flashed with rom manager. If I want to go back to stock will odin 1click work?

It's not that hard but yes your spoiled . It's not like going to a website and bingo it's done like the jailbraiking on iphone. You actually do the commands manually and learn something in the process.
You also need the corresponding tools to do the job (Google SDK for ADB, Odin for flashing, etc..). You don't build a house only by looking at the blue prints you have to put some work into it
Check out my ODIN video it should walk you through this very easily.

I just got my first REAL smartphone, actually it’s still on FedEx truck.
From reading the stickies on this forum, here’s what I gathered so far (and I am starting from scratch – nothing on my phone yet)
1) Root my phone with the ‘OneClick’ tool.
2) Install ROM (I am thinking Cognition, since it’s recommended for beginner).
3) Install Theme (haven’t decide on one yet) – any suggestions?
So, am I missing anything?
You seem to have a good grasp on what you are doing. I do recommend buying/making a Jig to have around just in case.
You're well on your way.
Make sure and read up on bootloaders and the difference between 2.1/2.2 and 2.3 bootloaders as getting this wrong is the main thing that can lead to "big" trouble.
Also take a look at Odin, Odin One Click return to stock and make sure and know the difference between those and the Odin One Click w/3 Button Combo.
thanks guys, i think i have a good idea of what i want to do but i am still struggling to find the details to do the above.
for example, what difference if my phone batch is 1010, or 1012, or older?
do i need to get an microsd card, if so what size/brand?
what sofware do i need to download?
etc, etc. etc.
i will continue to browse through the forums, but if you know of any links please post.
also, what does the jig do? do i need to have one?
thanks
First decide what u want to do, As u stated first root the phone and then u want a custom ROM, So go ahead and try it.
Only thing i will advice start from a froyo rom then to the gingerbread as there would be less chances to brick your phone while flashing the b.loades.
Read the OP properly of the ROM which you want to flash there are many good froyo rom available here. But just be sure what u are doing.
Please for the love of all things unholy, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
and if the phone comes with froyo you will need this after rooting before flashing a rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991

Again i will say read the OP carefully before flashing.
I have a few Captivates in the family and IMHO the first thinkg to do before flashing anything is to purchase Root Explorer in the market (for around $4) then back up your EFS folder (in the main directory) and save it to a cd so you ALWAYS have a hard copy of it. These files are specific to your phone and if they get screwed up during flashing, you phone may not be able to be used as a phone anymore. The back up copy will save you.
All of the above stuff is good. I was a noob about 6 months ago but I spent hours upon hours of reading and watching videos about flashing and moding. Good luck!

the OP is the original post or poster, like your first question is the op, and you are also the op of the thread. in that context he meant the original post, because that will have most of the information about the rom...but i would expand on that to read the op and the a couple of pages in, and also if its a large thread with alot of posts read atleast the LAST 5 or 6 pages also.
anymore terms you are unfamiliar with read the op of this thread carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093062

just got my phone in the mail.
i looked at the batch number under the battery slot and it shows 1106.
does this mean i have version 2.1 or 2.2? what would be the appropriate app/tool for rooting?
thanks
The batch had nothing to do with the firmware....that just means your phone was built in june of 2011. But since it's a new phone it more than likely has 2.2 confirm this in settings>about phone> firmware version.
Use super one click to root.
BUT FIRST PLEASE READ SOME MORE.
All of the information you are looking is already on here at the very least twice probably WAY more.
it is indeed version 2.2
so i read the first page of this thread and also watched the youtube clip. it looks straight enough to root. but i got a question. should i run the universal root or the captivate root?

You should have the driver installed on your computer for anything you do with the phone. Make sure after you install drivers to plug in your phone to the computer in all the different modes it has - in debugging mode, not in debug mode, in download mode, and connecting as an external drive. The computer will install all the drivers when you do this.
I will try to attach v1.6.5 of Super One CLick. I hope it's ok with the moderators here that I am posting the software. Just unzip the folder and double click the android icon in that folder.

i have tried all Froyo based roms available for the captivate.i have good experience in rooting, clockworkmod and flashing roms.I would like to help out all new members here as much possible because just 2 months back i had trouble finding out things...
So what are you guys waiting for ask away....!
P.S:also i kindly request the other senior members and developers here to correct me if i am wrong anywhere and ya i dont want any donations....
Hey, I'm working on something with a similar spirit as this.
A work in progress: self help brick recovery guide
If you would want help out with this. I believe that it could help the q&a and other section of the captivate thread a lot by reducing the number of brick threads
If either of you have experience with web coding, perhaps it would be worthwhile to make up a page that has an interactive checklist of brick steps. Sort of a step-by-step troubleshooter.
For example, the first page could just be the question about whether the phone shows any signs of life at all or not, then have a page with selectable items about the Rom/kernel/modem setup, then move into more specific items.
See the attached zip for what I'm talking about.

I saw the zip and got what you are saying i liked it. I have a decent hold over html & java so i must be able to create that....!
But i will need space to host it....!
Perhaps in lieu of hosting space, save it as an all-in-one zip file and post it on here. You wouldn't need a large amount additional space (I assume) as there probably wouldn't be a huge need for images. If that's the case, it would be all text, which should be fairly small.

sorry adicool I'm no good with HTML or coding i will have to leave that to you. But I have a knack for graphic design. Plus I can find and collect the images that could be use as examples (ex. like a soft brick screen)

Looks good to me. Clean, simple, easy to follow.
A good starting point, if you need any help feel free to ask.
Thought here: The one package is good. I'm also thing that we can have each section posted package as a separate package too (along with the whole package). So those who only need one thing like rooting the can just download that section
Hi! I'm new to the forums and need some help. I have stock I897UCKB1, sucessfully rooted and unlocked it. I would like to try out some ROMs, CM7 first. How should i start? I assume i have Eclair/Froyo bootloaders, right? I've installed ROM Manager Premium, clicked flash clockworkmod, and to reboot to recovery but it's only stock recovery. How should i proceed? Also i need some enlightment on bootloaders: if i flash the newest GB ATT bootloaders will every ROM work with it? Thanks in advance!
Go to the general section, there is a thread called "sticky roll-up" in there is a link to a thread called "e: signature verification failed" that is the work around you need for cwm (or any zip) to flash
Or you can flash a froyo kernel that has cwm baked in with odin like speedmod...
I wouldn't mess with bootloaders st this point in your flashing experience that its the only time you risk a real hard brick do leave those alone until you know for sure what you're doing.
I totally forgot about muse, so here's my on take of the guide.

I would advice you to first try flashing a few froyo based roms just to gain experience in flashing after that you can move over to GB
as told by my friends here there is a thread here that fixes that cwm problem .!
If you still need help or cant find it do post here and i would be more than happy to help...!whatever you do just dont mess with bootloaders atm as they can cause your device to be bricked...
I would say start off first by flashing cognition 4.5.3....!

yeah i saw your attempt it was decent enough mate,if you want to try more software try adobe dreamweaver it will help you develop web pages without html
dreamweaver would be great but my current computer wouldn't be able to handle it and i dont have the money for it. muse is free until the final product is done that why im using it.
i pm'ed you but i dont know if it sent
Basically my phone is stuck on the GT-N7000 Samsung Logo screen.
Would love if somebody could make my day and tell me how I can restore my phone with it's pictures.
I know this is not as simple as it sounds but I have read a thread that explains something about non-wiping ROMs / upgrade ROMs? Is this true?
Notes:
I have a stock ROM (I bought the phone via Amazon Germany though).
Never tried to place another ROM onto phone.
I cannot go into recovery mode.
I am able to go into download mode.
I have heard of this ODIN but not familiar.
Heeelp!
This is a good thread to learn about odin

If you do not want to listen and do not want to read yourself (at least the first few posts with the tutorials) then why do you cry for help?
And answer in such an idiotic behavior?
Don't you think that it is this way of ignorance that is resulted in your "bricked" device?

Are you kidding me!? You're honestly a senior member? Calling my response idiotic is probably a little ironic. Let me explain why...
Firstly, I'm not going to waste too much of my time replying to you but my concern was that during the 501 pages of the thread something may changed from the start, I can't be sure how accurate the first posts are, which I feel is a valid point 1.
As for the bricked device, the phone became bricked itself due to no fault of my own, other people have experienced the same thing, I have avoided popping ROM's onto the phone to avoid voiding my warranty, I did not tamper with anything, this is valid point 2.
If you have nothing positive to contribute to this thread please refrain from adding any further comments, or take a chill pill and use a little empathy senior member.
I should also add that:
- I eeked at the 501 pages - I was not being condescending.
- I believe that there is a difference between ROM's that completely flash the whole memory and upgrade ROM's that will retain, hence why I asked the question, about 'upgrade' ROM's.
If you want to pull the pictures from the phone internal memory you can use a pc program called adb.exe, but you need to be in download mode.

Except he is right. This has been discussed. You're method is to read that thread. This is a website (or at least is supposed to be) for users that are willing to read the guides people have slaved to create
Everything you need to know is there.
And absent hardware failure, a phone doesn't brick itself.
Read dr.ketan thread on how to flash a stock ROM via PC Odin from download mode. The guide is current. This is the only answer you will receive here.

Thanks Ranger Captain! Much appreciated. I'll look into this!
The expert on adb.exe is a user nemed studacris. I think it would be ok to PM him and get the specifics of the command.
Roughly, connect the phone to the pc in download mode, open a command window, navigate to your adb directory, type adb device to confirm the connection, then type adb pull \directory name\all files /directory on pc and the files will transfer from the internal phone memory to your pc.

When you come across a 501 page thread and say the answer is there and current for people who are willing to read there is a bit of a problem here.
I was hoping a tech Guru on here who is familiar with my problem could help summarise key points relevant to my problem.
I am willing to concede after some of you have eluded to much of the information is in the first few pages. Thank you.
As for bricking - there has been corruption of what seems to be the firmware, which not is of the question, what point are you making? If you read a few other threads, others have experienced similar issues with attempting to update their ROM's.

Hey man. All you need to do is read the first post of dr.ketan's thread. Good luck. If flashing a stock ROM via PC Odin doesn't work, per the isnstructions on that thread, I will personally be more than glad to help. But that IS your first step.
There is nothing to summarize. Follow the procedure in that thread OP. You don't have to read ANY of the thread except the guide. If it doesn't help you get up and running, feel free to PM me or post here. But when someone tells you to read a thread you must realize they are probably referring to the Original Post. If you are told to search (xda users rule #1), then that is a different story. For example, if you said 'how do I Use an OTG cable', I would say 'search this thread for the keyword otg'. Nevertheless, that is not the case here. There is a specific guide in the OP of that thread that describes what your first step to fix your device should be. Once that has been exhausted, please feel free to ask for further guidance.
Take care and good luck.

I was reading. There is something not quite clear. Although the thread tells you a lot about how to do something, it doesn't say what it does or what it's for.
I've downloaded the software but further threads highlight that data may still be deleted.
Would you mind advising of how the thread can ensure that my data will not be deleted?

Which data you refer to?
Question: is your data nor backed up via Google?
As for SD card data, like photos, is that what you're talking about?
