Manual way
Hey guys
If you are feeling adventurous you can do it manually.
install Terminal Emulator by Jack Plevich
and SuperUser by ChainsDD
run Term and type:
cat /system/build.prop > /sdcard/build.prop
Exit and open the file on your sdcard in your fav text editor app and edit the LCD Density setting. It's right near the bottom of the file.
go back to Term and type:
su
'(should now get a prompt to allow access)
rm /system/build.prop
cat /sdcard/build.prop > /system/build.prop
reboot
Thanks. I ended up buying root explorer and edited it manually with that. Strange that the lcddensity app didn't work for some but did for others. Oh well. I now have what I think is a better ui in honeycomb on my streak 7. Now to go get a reasonable keyboard!
Thanks again.

What's the best density to use?
Or better yet what does everyone have their resolutions set to?
Right now I have it set to 133 which looks perfect but all my browser apps force close.
Dam dell to hell for their lack of fore sight with the resolution, even the color nook has a better screen

I consider this to be the best change I've made to my phone, dropping the dpi setting in build.prop from 240 to 200. You can fit so much more on screen, menus look awesome and you can always tweak the font size in individual apps if it's too small.
It always shocks me how huge everything looks after re-flashing, it's the first thing I change every time.
So, does anyone else use a non standard dpi setting? If not I urge you to try it!
I love having my N1 set at 200 as well. I also have a Viewsonic GTablet that I have dropped to 140. I use LCD Density Changer to change the resolution as it is quick and it stays set through reboots (requires root).

I had not ever tried this till seeing this post. Now that I have tried it, I am not sure if I will be able to go back to 240. Thanks for the heads up OP.
..yeah, always set to 220.
170 here. Stayed at 200 for a while but then I went further, couldn't go back...
My gf keeps hers at 240. I can't stand looking at her screen! lol
I found 200 almost mandatory on my Evo but on my nexus.. stock is fine.

IMO only some of the settings look "right" whereas others distort things.
I use 240, 192, 180 depending on what I'm doing on my Nexus1.

Or if you'd rather not pay, remount /system rw and find this line in build.prop:
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
Set it to whatever you like and reboot
Just tried a few densities and like 200

Thanks for the info.
I guess some apps don't work if you mess around with the density. I liked 220 but the app 'RadioRip' stopped working, so I have to settle with 230 as the app still works with that setting.
I'd love to use my phone at 180 but the stock keyboard goes too small. I can't live without gingerbread keyboard

It might be worth trying unticking compatibility mode in spare parts, seems to fix most issues that changing the DPI causes.

Edit: ok now Skype is all messed up
Think I'll just stick with 240 :-/

you need to change the DPI in the build.prop to 240
Flash gapps and change dpi to 160 for full tablet market (most compatable) or dpi 240 for full regular market.
Thanks for clearing that up diz, now though I'm going to have to figure out how to resize the android keyboard, as it looks kind of screwed up with the doing at 160.
XD

Simply install LcdDensity from Android market and temporarily change your dpi to 160 to be able to use the Market.

On my galaxy s2 i use several transparent widgets, including program monitor, was wondering if some one has thought about making some for the tab 7.7. Or is it possible to port the one from the gs2. Mainly program monitor and the stock digital clock. Cheers

Try grabbing the .apk files out of /system/app and copying them to your tab's /system/app. There's a pretty good chance that will just work (though you might need to reboot after pushing them to the tab). The stock digital clock should be DigitalClock.apk, not sure about the program monitor.
Tried but no success yet. file names are different. not sure if I can even get the old one working again. I'm using super manager, sometimes it asks if I want to use r/w, other times it doesn't ask at all. Think I need a better file manager with root

Hi whats the easiest way to inrease the screen DPI? I have a SGS3 and a Note3 infront of me but I dont see anything extra on the Note3 it's just magnified. Really pointless...unless you have poor eye sight!

I set the dpi on an app by app basis. I left the system as is and just decreased the system font size. I feel this combo works well for me. I used Xposed App Settings to do this.

Techweed,
I installed Xposed App Settings and played around with dpi setting
of 320 and 480 in contacts and the gallery, but didn't see any real change.
Can you provide any help?
Thanks,
Neil

I actually didn't change contacts or the gallery. That's strange though. I changed other apps like the Play Store and Youtube to 400 just to make everything a bit smaller and they've changed accordingly.
To tell you the truth I don't have that much experience with this either. So you've installed the framework correct? Did you save the changes you made to the two apps you mentioned?

Thanks Bladerunner,
That was informative and helpful. Showed me what I don't know
Even added another piece to the puzzle with Rom Toolbox,
which I need to checkout and read about.
I think I need to proceed slowly down this rabbit hole...

Bladerunner,
In the above thread you referenced, you stated you used rom toolbox to changed your whole system to 320 dpi
Where can I find that feature in rom toolbox?
Thanks,
Neil
Its the build prop editor open it and scroll all the way down and look for the LCD =480. Change it to whatever ya want then it'll prompt ya to reboot and after that DPI will be changed

When your open rom toolbox, Swype to the left and you will see the build prop editor button.

One of my biggest pet peeves with Sense is the lack of ability to have the home screen be in landscape mode. I know phones in the past worked in landscape mode but only in a car dock with car App closed. I have allway's found a rom that had "Rosie Landscape?" using Bad Seed 2.0 right now love it except for that.
Is there a fix? I remember back for my old phones they had add-on package with this kind of options.
I do not want to get rid of sense as a launcher.
Any idea?

Today I dropped down my HTC M8 and because it was dirty I washed it, attar that it starts to rotate the home screen. Also it had some another strange behaviors (open some apps, start to ring without incoming call) but when it became dry everything run normal.
My M8 phone is rooted but with original rom. I only rooted it to get rid of ads.
So I thing there is setting for that and I want to find it
There is a setting you can enable in the system database.
open an adb shell and run:
/system/xbin/sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Then you can enter to
Read value:
select value from 'system' where name = 'tweaks_support_landscape';
Change value:
update system SET value=1 where name='tweaks_support_landscape';
Add value:
INSERT INTO "system" VALUES(NULL,'tweaks_support_landscape','1');
exit sqlite with .quit
