I love getting google voice transcriptions sent via text message but being that I have a limited days plan with att (250 mb) I'd still like to use carrier voicemail to listen to the message in order to save valuable data usage. Is this possible?

You can call your Google voice number and listen to it like the normal one so you are using minutes and not data

Just make sure you don't look at the transcript on your Google voice app first. Once the voicemail is marked as read, you can't listen to it on the phone call. Once you update your voicemail preferences, the voicemail key on your dial pad will call Google voice instead of att.

thats what i thought at first, but using the 'my verizon app' it shows that it's still going up. and thats all i have been using.
atleast i think it was.
My gv texts don't accumulate my plan's messages and neither does my wife's. If they counted, we'd be in debt with over-texting. Are you getting text notifications that you've received a gv text? If so, turn those off.

i'm getting the notification on the bar, but thats it.
my gv doesn't use my texts unless i set it to get text notifications of the texts
Test it again, and look at your # of texts.
I 100% promise, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it doesn't add to your texting.
It even goes over 3g, it doesn't go over your voice/text frequency. It's just like sending an email. It's entirely different than a normal text.
Google voice is great.
After phone calls, once in a while, it takes a bit for texts and voice mails to come on.
If you make a real short phone call or get one in, sometimes Google Voice doesn't 'check back in' with the server to see if any texts/voicemails came in during your call.
When you make a longer call, it knows to check on itself, but sometimes if you have a short phone call and someone texts your Google Voice, it doesn't pick up right after your call (unless you open the app).
Again, it's because it's a 'push' notification instead of 'checking in' every x amount of time. In other words, if your 3g isn't on, it doesn't push to your phone. So the app has to 'refresh' and look back on the server.
Neither here nor there. It's 100% reliable and uses 0 texts from your carrier's plan. I promise.
Google Voice all the way! It definitely doesn't add to the text count (as long as you turn off the text notifications in the Google Voice settings). I switched to it because for some reason I can't receive texts reliably anymore >.<
search "textplus" in the market. Its not too bad of an app. It uses data to send texts

Ok so I think that I found this before but on the xda app search can't seem to find again. Is there anything special I have to do to get google voice to work as voice mail?

if you have google voice installed on your phone, just go into your main settings, call settings, voicemail, and select google voice as your voicemail provider
nahhh..that didn't work for me at least. I had to initiate it online..since then no problems
I don't use carrier texting (refuse to pay $30 so I have texts disabled). I use Google Voice as my primary number.
Does the Galaxy Gear allow changing the text function to use an app other than stock messaging (i.e. Google Voice).
I would think this could work, since when someone texts you at your google voice number it goes into the regular text on the phone? That should forward to the phone...
I don't think it works. I had my phone originally set up as you suggested but I want getting messages to the watch

You have to go to settings in Google voice on your pc and click on the box to forward google voice messages to your email. Use the stock samsung email app and you will get Google voice messages that way. This is what I do. The only thing is that the Samsung email app doesn't push email as fast as the Gmail app but you can't use the Gmail app on the watch.

Can't set up Google voice in my Verizon
Moto x. Any ideas?

not sure what you mean by "set up"...
some carriers do not let you modify your voicemail settings through the google voice app, you have to use their technical support. that means in order to use google voice as your voicemail provider you need to call your carriers customer service and tell them to set your phone to forward UNANSWERED calls to #GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER#.
Thanks. I found that I had to choose Google voice under phone settings as my voicemail. And then in dialer dial *71(Google voicemail #)

Just in case you don't know...the new Hangouts Dialer app is out and if you've enabled Google Voice on your Sprint account...VOILA!! WIFI calling.
Just tried on my Nexus 7 and it works great. Calls going to my Sprint number are routed to the tablet also. If I don't have data but still have service (Wild and Wonderful West Virginia)...the calls still go to my phone.
Ok so a little update...
I received the message to allow hangouts to basically replace the google voice app. Hangouts is faster than the gvoice app every was..which is good. Also consumes less battery.
However, if I don't have data or WiFi I can't send texts from hangouts even though it's my default app for messaging. If I don't have data I have to use the stock messenger. Which isn't exactly a problem...just wanted to state the fact.
Texts and calls work on my nexus 7. Voice quality seems fine even tho I have DSL at home.

Under settings>SMS and settings>[your email here] you can control whether texts are sent from gvoice or your regular phone number [emoji106]
Every time I make outgoing calls on my tablet, the caller ID shows up as unknown. Also, how can I send sms through tablets?
Settings, email, and then look under Google Voice section to enable messages.
My caller ID is working just fine from my tablet. I'm sure there's going to be kinks that need worked out. I've had random issues with GV for years lol
