[Q] How to restore SGS to working condition? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Updated: Thought I'd mention I'm on Bell (Canada) i9000m.
After upgrading my Slacker Radio App (not sure if it's related or not) my SGS restarted and went into a boot loop.
I would like to wipe out my phone (kernel and rom) and start off fresh.
I am able to enter download mode but don't know where to go from here.
Please help (even a link to a thread w/ instructions would be greatly appreciated).

Have you tried just going into recovery (vol up + power + home) and doing a factory reset?

Here u r mate, take ur time,(better be safe than sorry) put ur question here & ill try to help

I posted a question on that forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14086111&postcount=2492) with the same problem as the OP /: any help?

Follow the usual instructions .
Download stock rom for your phone .
Flash through Odin with pit and repartition checked .
basics here

I have voodoo installed and obviously I can not disable it (due to boot loop).
Can I still flash a stock rom/kernel?

alright buddy, look. I appreciate any help you may or may not provide to me at this given moment. but what you are doing, is essentially spamming. I'm asking a question on THIS thread, in relation to my problem. I have searched these forums AS WELL AS the internet itself. And granted, I might have overlooked something. But as a community, thats what these forums do. their purpose is to help those who may have overlooked something or perhaps the solution is yet to exist.
By telling me to search, is more counterproductive than for me to post something and not get a reply.
like I said, I appreciate the help, if any, but its best to be a gent about this sort of thing. no one likes a douche bag on the forums.
EDIT:: Those links were completely useless. they're just links from the top of the SGS general page. I'm not an idiot; I've seen and read these threads before. CLEARLY they were of no help. why else why I be here? -___-

Cos you are to f8888 lazy to search or read the FAQS matey .
thousands posting just like you to lazy to search or learn .
Even to ignorant to read the post i sent that would have enabled you to flash a stock rom and clear your problem .
If it good enough for other users then it should be good enough for somebody that does not understand the basics as they are the basics .

*facepalm* the reason your posts did NOT help, is simply because I have already tried those things. And you u bother searching long enough, you will see these "solutions" have bee posted before. except in more detail. I have searched. Heck Ive spent hours and even days on this problem alone. Not only have I searched, but ive managed to read 95% of all forums in full. and no one seems to have a SOLID solution. WHICH is why I've succumb to asking the question myself.
yes. I have flashed various of pit files with various combos of boot-loaders and roms AS required by some users. I have even done some steps individually AS required by some users. The FARTHEST I've gotten with ANY of these procedures was reaching the custom recovery menu. yet once i got that far, tried doing a factory reset and flashing a ROM, it told me some file was missing. Then I was back to square one.
thanks. but no thanks, JJE. ur "help" seems to relate more to typical "n00b bashing" rather than any sort of help at all.

I hate to say it, but I learned a lot just by reading these forums. Yes, there are threads with 150+ pages of posts, but you will save yourself alot of trouble by learning from others mistakes. Read, read and read. Then you will know what you have, what you need, and what you want to ask....
Hope that helps.....

But definitely READ this section..... all the good mods, kernels and reviews are in here.
techmik67 speaks the truth... I got my first Android phone (THIS ONE) on July 18th and started lurking these forums less than a week later.
Right now I'm installing VMWare and installing Linux as a virtual machine so that I can deox ROMs, all-the-while combing over the Captivate source code in hopes that I might find some clue as to why our kernel is locked to the AT&T modem files. I'm not even kidding =P

I am assuming you are talking about a stock Captivate. If you haven't done anything to it, I believe you would see this in SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel: I can't remember
Build number: Eclair
The 1st thing I did next was a 1 click root.
Next, and this is a personal choice, download and install from the thread SREv1.2.1a. If you read that 150+ page thread (most importantly, the OP) it will tell you that it includes some important things, like sideloading enabled and others.
Then see if you want a lagfix
At that point, your settings should now read:
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel: Same I think
Build number: SREv1.2.1a
I would install ROM MANAGER and QUICKBOOT from the market asap. Then consider upgrading firmware (baseband version) from UCJF6 to UCJH2 or JH3. Read the threads. And check my signature to see my setup, which I like alot.

How did you side load? did you actually "install" it, or did you "push" it to your phone? If it is installed, it will be in your app drawer. If you pushed it, you'll need to use the my files program to find the app, and just open it and hit install.
I would suggest reading the SRE thread, because that is probably one of the best way to really get your phone faster.
You can also check out the Unleash the Beast thread. Then check out any lag fix by Tayutama (that is what I use, and I'm not sure on the spelling) because that will make your phone quicker!

i have tried the i9000 rom, which was awesome, but i got tired of that little video call button mocking me so i switched back to stock UCJF6 and did the SRE1.21a.
how would i go about upgrading my firmware without reflashing everything and losing what i have already done? i have read the threads regarding the JH3 rom, but didnt see anything about how to do it without losing my current setup

If I am not mistaken, this is what Titanium Backup is good for.
Rom Manager will help you restore like system restore in windows to EXACTLY as you are, apps, data and all, when you create the backup (which you should ALWAYS do before trying to flash a new firmware or update). Do that now.
Then, get Titanium. Under backup and restore, backup all your apps and app data (will show up white text). Also backup SOME of the stuff in green and red. You can see what to back up. when in doubt, back it up and think twice before restoring it.
If at any time you brick or have problems, boot into recovery, choose reinstall packages which will run update.zip created by rom manager so you can access the clockwork restore menu. Then restore to your backup you made and start over.
Lastly, check out QUICKBOOT in the market. EZ reboot into recovery mode.
oh. i already use those and know how to do backups and recovery. i recovered all my stuff from my i9000 jump to jf6+sre .. guess i will go through the process again.

The $4 for Titanium donate version is well worth it. I did a restore on free, and it took 45 mins of installing apps and pushing buttons. took less than 10 with the donate version with no interaction.
Well I will re-iterate what others have already said. Read.
But here is what I did:
Flash JH3 via Odin
Root via Bugless Pete's Unleash the Beast v0.2
download Terminal Emulator from the market
Type: su
Type: sideloading
By now you are rooted and sideloading is activated and a bunch of bloat ware is gone.
Now install a lag fix (search for Zilch's condensed version of lag fixes)
You can choose between RyanZA's APK in the market or his script or tayatumas update.zip. I also reccomend Chainfires lag fix in the i9000 forums.
Now everything is done: JH3 - Root- Sideloading- lagfix.
Now patiently wait for Supercurios lagfix port for the captivate.
And find a mentor you can secretely stalk and try what they try. There are some people out there who really know what they are doing. Here is aquick list.
Chainfire
Zilch
RyanZA
Tayatuma
Unhelpful
Supercurio
And many more.
Then Read Read Read.

[Q] Rooting and Installing a ROM on Galaxy Note

Before you send me a link to Dr. Ketan's guide, I'd just like to say that his instructions are incomprehensible for me. I understand English isn't his main language, so I will not follow his guide in fear of bricking my device.
So I request for someone (preferably someone whose main language is English) to provide comprehensive instructions on how to root my device which can't be rooted using the traditional method (I have one of the newer kernels). Instructions on what to do next to install a custom ROM would also be appreciated. Ultimately, I hope I can install the Rocket ROM without bricking my device.
By no means am I trying to insult Dr. Ketan. I'm just saying that instructions should be given in clear, comprehensive English to avoid a misunderstanding. Dr. Ketan put in effort in that guide, that I can wholeheartedly agree.
It's just a shame many of XDA's professionals don't reside in an English-speaking country.

There is nothing shame in having less professionals in english-speaking country Not everyone are genius in this world. So stop saying so.Though you dint have motive to hurt anyone I fell the last line is little harsh to me.

I must apologize. I mean no disrespect to non-English speakers. I should have worded my last sentence better.
I have no qualms about having non-English speakers in the community. They're vital to promoting the website to other people.
I wouldn't mind his (Dr. Ketan) guide so much except for the fact that we're dabbling in things that could potentially brick our phones. To some people, bricking is totally alright with them as they have the income to simply replace their phones. However, to people like me, breaking or bricking a phone basically means having no phone for the next few years.
As such, it shouldn't be selfish of me to ask for a guide that addresses any issues I might have in clear, comprehensive English.
Once again I mean no disrespect to Dr. Ketan and other non-English speakers here. I'm just very concerned about my device and the risk I'm taking in rooting my phone. I was very harsh with my words, calling the guide incomprehensible when really, only a handful of sentences were misleading.
Now, with that out of the way, I'll go back on topic. When I mentioned his guide, I specifically meant this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Which part do I follow to get root and CWM on my phone?
Chances of bricking samsung phones are extremely low. If you are afraid to bricke yours. Try and understand ketan's guide.
It is in my opinion comprehensible.
But i will do my best to simplify it.
Download stock firmware kk9.
Download cfroot kernel kk9.
Download odin.
All from ketans thread.
Switch off phone. Turn on phone holding vol down. Power and home. And then ignore the warning and continue.
Open up odin click on pda and open stock firmware kk9. And start.
After reboot. Go to setting application. Enable usb debug and unknown sources.
In cfroot kernel folder. Click on not rooted yet. . Done.

Please, don't be sorry. Clearly I'm the simple-minded one since I'm the only one having issues reading your guide. You spent a lot of time on it, so I'm the one who should be sorry for thrashing it.
OK, I'll try to help you, although I'm also not a native English speaker.
1. go to this thread and download N7000XXKK9 rom. Unzip it (password: samfirmware.com) and you'll get a .tar.md5 file and a .dll file.
2. download PC Odin from here.
3. read and follow this carefully - it's very comprehensive and has a picture guide to PC Odin flashing.
4. now you'll have an old GB rom. If you get stuck in bootloop after flashing is done, don't panic. Pull out your battery, wait apprx. 30 secs, put it back in. Press volume up + home + power button and your phone will boot into stock recovery. Do 'wipe cache' followed by 'wipe user data/factory reset'. Reboot your phone.
5. download the zip attachment. Unzip it and start not-rooted-yet.bat. Follow the instructions to the letter.
6. if all goes well, you'll have a rooted KK9 rom at this point, and can flash anything you like from its CWM Recovery.
I hope my pidgin English is good enough.

New problem: I can't download from Hotfile. Does anyone have a direct link? I tried googling it and all I found was Multiupload links that wouldn't load on my browser and Hotfile links which download at 5kb/s.
Try downloading from here:

HELP me with this CFroot!!!

hey i really dont understand what is CFroot and it complications, i have a few questions if some developer or someone really knowledgeable person here can answer pls for me and all the noobs out here. and i bet ya all, even some of the really talented and well experienced people out here might also be dodged with these questions:
Q1- is the stock LPY rom safe? the one which we download from xda which is like 500 mb or something?
Q2- what is CFroot? is it harmfull to do full wipe with this?
Q3- what is my kernal in the stock rom which is 500 mb or something? i cant understand it so i attached a screen shot if u can tell me.
Q4- with this (stock rom downloaded and flashed) kernal and everything which u can see in my screen shot can i flash the CWM and root my phone safely with out and issues? can u pls for the sake of android brotherhood, give me some details? i know i can find that in many threads but as i already mentioned do this favor and explain it here for the sake of android brotherhood!
Q5- rocket rom and midnote rom are out for LPY can i flash them with no issues?
i will be really great full to the people helping cause this LPY and BRICKING issue have really been pain in my a** for a couple of days and i m really so afraid to flash without complete knowledge of things.
thanks

no i have posted in the right section and the topic is not a question! and THANKS for your help!
Loose your attitude, it wont let you go far on here. And DEV section is only for Development not Q&A which your thread clearly is. As you see the Mod has already done that. Thirdly there are plenty of places you can read about it.
Anyway...
CFroot is chainfire root and its the kernels/CWM/CFroot mixed together creating problems. No one is sure which one it is.
To make it sure its better not to do any wipes from CFroot CWM, If you want to do full wipe, use abyssnote4.2. then flash your rom on top.
Your kernel is already LPY, which is the latest one. As said above and as in Rocketrom ICS thread install it like that. You should be fine. But then again if you are not sure, then its better late than sorry..

So true. It is gratifying that some do get it, thank you for that.

[Q] Noob trying to root then unlock

Hi i have a Galaxy mini apparently(sorry thought it was a GT-S5570) and new to the title of mini after a quite a bit of googling. Anyway i worked out how to get the 'root check ' app after reading about it and it sent a file to my gmail address but don't know where to move from here to unlock. I read so many pages my head is in a spin so would appreciate some help :0)
welcome to xda
1. 1st check if u r on froyo or GB..if not, upgrade to GB [see this general section for guide to upgrade to GB]
2. then install clockworkmod recovery [see original android development section]
3. then install any custom ROM available here...
custom roms are pre-rooted..
for all the guides = check this thread here #Season 1

OK I haven't heard of most of those things but i am guessing GB is Gingerbread as i have seen that around when googling. Is that the version of operating system? Ah i looked at the general section. The first sticky that had a guides section but wasn't sure which thing you meant sorry. Be kind to me as i am really new to Samsungs and have only modded a couple of motorolas in the last few years with lots of help from forums:angel:
before doing anything read the stickied warning thread it contains what you should never do with mini
then read the stickied reference thread
Thanks for the welcome A_U
OK will try and find the stickies and read them but it is hard as i have CFS. Reading through lots of stuff will take me ages

just dont go directly to flashing rom
you should first understand every things
the most important things is never use rom manager (possible bricking)
you should read terminology in reference thread it will get you familiar with many android stuff
every galaxy mini's section is listed here:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1311

Yep i get you but its too much for me and i am willing to risk it....there is too much and my memory is very poor due to my medical condition. Its too much information all at once. I do better by following instructions one step at a time. I think i found the clockworkmod so trying to understand that page
do you really have short term memory or you are just kidding

We all were in the same boat as you, so don't worry if it's too much now Check the guides with patience. You're not in a hurry or anything, right?

I am on a disability pension as i have CFS/ME and short term memory is just one of the things i deal with. The condition is neurological. I shouldnt even be learning anything about computers at all and on top i am even a linux person. I do pretty well compared to others that have this but takes me a lot of effort to learn. Thanks....yeah i can't ....the guides are too many pages. If i can be given a link to get straight to it rather than pages and pages. I have to keep two browser pages open and its just not that easy. Sorry but not everyone is in the same position. I could do five things at once before this happened to me, was in a coma, had to learn how to walk/talk etc again....fighting my way back and might take 20 years...who knows. Anyway links straight to where and what. I am really good at following instructions as have been a linux person a few years now and get on the linux forums a lot...sorry i know its a lot to grapple when you might have not met someone with a neurological thing before. Sorry if i repeat myself and miss stuff out but thats all part of this 'bits missing' brain
