I have a WiFi only SGT (P1010) and an AT&T SGT. HBO Go and XM do not work on the WiFi only SGT. Is this an intentional part of the application design? Do they try to use the IMEI number to uniquely identify something?
I plan to buy the WiFi only version of the SGT 8.9, but I'm concerned that the XM app won't work on it. I listen to XM at work.
Thanks in advance.
Bueller, Bueller, anyone?
Mine works just fine over wifi.wonder whats up with yours

Is yours a 3G model? I can not get XM to work on a Wi-Fi only SGT (not a 3G capable SGT while only using Wi-Fi).

Hi,
I'm moving overseas and getting out of my Sprint contract legally. Will I be able to use my hero with wifi-only for apps? (internet, fring, etc.) Or does something happen to the phone once the radio is disconnected from Sprint. I'm running Fresh 2.0d (not sure if that matters or not).
Thanks for the help!
You'll be fine.

ummmmm the stock rom has this built-in.... I thought.
Settings>Wireless&Network>Tether&portable hotspot
Yeah stock android has tethering built into the OS. Up to 8 devices I believe, or close.
So that won't require me to pay through ATT? Could anyone elaborate?

Yes
yes you don't need to pay the carrier i got t-mo and I use tethering all the time. It works great or download barnacle for creating a wifi hotspot, thats better.

I think this isn't entirely true. The carriers have some control over this, and AT&T recently changed their tethering policy. That might mean you can't tether without the proper account.
The carriers can't control tethering. They can attempt to charge for it, though, using various methods of detecting you tethering.
That's what I'm thinking about; because I bought this phone from someone here and the line is still registered to a Capptivate, how could they know if I'm tethering or not?
I would have increased upload ans download usage but... other than that how could they know?

That, to me, is a form of control, and what I meant.
I don't know if they do this, but theoretically, it could be built into the system to know when packets are the result of tethering. More likely, is that it is built into the phone software by the carrier, and so the N1 wouldn't be subject to this because the carrier doesn't have control over that.

I see everyone is using the term "tethering" to mean your phone sharing its internet connection via Wi-Fi? I guess the definition has changed -- to me, tethering was always using your phone as a dial-up modem, i.e., using a dial-string to connect to the internet, no? For example, using BT DUN (which is advantages, as you can keep your phone in your pocket and initiate an internet connection right from the computer, although I have yet to see an implementation of this on Android). In this case, carriers can tell. For example, with Rogers, the dial string is *99# so they can tell if you are using data over that versus using data on device via the normal APN.
Yes, I believe the most of the reference for "tethering" is changed from "legacy" reference - it's either USB or WiFi tether, and in both you don't actually use the phone as a modem to establish a connection, but use its own connectivity and share the access to it.

I guess I need to catch up with the times! To me what your describing was internet connection sharing, not tethering... I guess my age is starting to show!
so a buddy of mine has a phone from tmobile the htc sensation and it has the option of using wifi calling whitch apparently doesn't use minutes texts or anything on it is there a way that our phones can do that i have tried google voice but it still uses minutes any way for that to work on the bionic just curious???
Currently, T-Mobile is the only carrier around using Wifi calling (US, at least). It requires specific setup on the backbone and no one else has implimented this. I'm sure there are third party apps that will do something like this, but as far as a carrier-supported feature, you're out of luck.
oh ok so it is related to the actual network interface such as verizons 3g 4g while on a phone call?? i wish there was a way to use wifi only minutes i try google voice but it still uses minutes..
GrooveIP

Grooveip works with google voice to make 3g, 4g, and wifi calls. Doesn't use any minutes. Only data if calling over a network. A simple search in the Android market will tell all one needs to know.

I also use grooveip. Works like a charm making calls through wifi using my Google voice number. I also have it on my wifi xoom and it works great as well.

I have NetTalk home VOIP which works great but an added bonus is their app which is on the Market, but you do have to have the Nettalk duo.
It allows outgoing free calls using 4g or WiFi (I think 3g works)but no incoming as of yet.
I found the voice quality to be very usable but it does have it's limitations.
When you call anyone it doesn't show your cell number but a number that is from Nettalk
Yeah i have that too not too bad for free but horriable quality

I have a returns selling me a tab 7 on Rogers that he used for 4 hours, for 200. I saw it, and it's in perfect shape. i won't be using the 3g, just the wifi. So can i disable it? Unless i can use it on wind
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
I *think* you can set it to Airplane mode and then just activate WiFi.
No idea what Wind is
U should buy it.

Wind is another mobile provider here in Canada.
Not sure if the tab will work on wind (I don't know which bands they use however you can probably call them and ask). You may also have to unlock it first. Also if you have another GSM device you could always tether too.
Yes good price for that.
Better than the Playbook sale going on again tomorrow.

Have the international note and really enjoy it thus far except that I can't seem to get Wifi calling to show up.
Is anyone with this phone using the Wifi calling with t-mobile?
Thanks

what do you mean by that? For me I cant use 3g voip, any solution?

LOL, by the responses to this thread, the N7000 does not work with the Tmobile wifi calling feature. This worked great on my Galaxy S II for having a useful signal in my house using my own wifi network. My guess is that it must have something to do with the lack of the AWS 1700 band?
For any of you with a similar signal issue when in the office or at home, a Google Voice number and the "Groove IP" app works great over wifi and obviously doesn't use any of your voice minutes.
But Groove IP uses a LOT of bandwidth. 90K continuous up and down. Not many data links are happy running that fast. I wish I could add real WifI Calling to my LA4 N7000
