Help with my burnging desire tobuild something!! - Off-topic

Ok, well recently i've been getting tired of playing my xbox all day and feel as if I need to be more productive with my free time. Three things have interested me a lot are; lasers, speakers/audio, and LED's. I really want to so something including one, if not two of the three interests. I've never soldered but im defiantly going to learn how. The biggest project i've done so far would probably installing lights in my xbox along with cutting out a two windows too see them.
I need ideas. Summer is just around the corner and will have plentiful free time. Any idea I will consider because im always up to learning something new.
Any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated!!

I want to put a screen in my xbox, have you ever thought of that then i cld play it at work i know thats not much of an idea but may be cool

Get a broken bluray player, or a BRD drive from a PS3, take out the blueray lazer, get a cheap red lazer, pop out the old red one, solder the new blue one, add a resistor, power source, and now you can burn stuff with a lazer.

[Q] Need help convincing my wife

I've decided on purchasing the Nook Color. I've been saving my pennies, but my wife is still not sold on the idea. She loves blogs and facebook, and she loves the netbook I got her for Christmas, but other than that she's not seduced by the raw technological possibility of the NC in the same way I am. What I need from you all is this: What features can I bring up to get my not-super-techie wife excited to own one of these things?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have children?
If so the children book range and the games you can get after root is a great way to keep them entertained.
(Im a teenager so i know what im talking about... lol)
Otherwise, the ability to use facebook, twitter and blog websites on the go is great, and other apps that just save time, like calculator apps for instance are EXTREMELY useful...
There also:
Recipe books (if she likes cooking)
Pandora
But to tell the absolute truth, if she doesn't want an ereader to actually read off, i dunno if you'll be able to convince her to get it...
If you can't convince her that you *need* it. And trust me you do....
Just bring it home.
If she gets mad (and she will)
Simply blame me.

I conviced my wife that the Nook would help me in many ways.
1) I am a Systems Engineer working for a large indrustral plant. I carry manuals, drawings, books, etc on my phone and a day planner with me. I was able to replace the planner with the Nook, I have moved all of the other stuff to the nook and the biger screen is very helpful.
2) I am attending classes for a masters degree. I have been able to get some of my books in PDF or Epub formats. It is also helpful for reviewing notes etc...
3) When I fly I can use the Nook for music, games, movies, etc...
take her to the store, use the demo model, and hope she falls in love with it. My wife thought it was gadgety, but now it's pretty much all she reads on. We had to strike an accord on rooting though. Eventually I switched to Nookie Froyo, and during the day when I'm not home I reboot it without the card so she can use it "stock". According to her it became too confusing once I rooted it (never did figure that one out), but finally it boiled down to the home screen replacement. I left it rooted, but went back to the nook home screen and disabled softkeys (button savior helped here since it's easier to hide), so it's as close to stock as it could be with still having the ability to load apps.
Bonus, if she likes magazines, they are actually pretty nice to read on the Nook. the 1.1 update makes them even better, so I look forward to rooting catching up with that so I can keep up my hybrid build. Good Luck!
Gee, sounds like the simplest thing is that "you have a netbook, I'd like a NOOKcolor"... that is, unless you have the netbook/laptop/etc. as well. Lucky me, we both have desktops, we both have netbooks, we both have Classic Nooks, and my wife still doesn't mind that I have the NC, 'cause she knows how much I like my toys.
(PS: the occasional gift (necklace, etc) for her makes it a lot easier for her to overlook my toys as well.)

What I did was take her (wife) to B & N and let her play with the NC. However, before we visited B & N, I shared a couple of YouTube videos illustrating the wonderful possibilities of the NC. Matter of fact, she took the NC to work the next day to show it off to her people.

Go ahead and buy it and tell her that it is a sweater.
My wife already had a Nook, and she was a little jealous over me getting the Nook Color as she "kinda" wanted a tablet, if it could: Facebook, Email, Read/Write Office doc files.
I installed a trial of one of the Office programs and let her play with it for a few.
We bought her one that night..
I can't imagine someone NOT wanting a nookColor! Once i rooted mine, hubby got so jealous he went and bought his own and had me root it for him. We are both 150% satisfied

The netbook is very much hers (except for some low-level tinkering I do like installing Maxivista), but I have my own laptop so the "you get one I get one" argument is out. I will keep up on the gift-giving, though. Thanks!

Favorite quote/suggestion. ^^^^^
Anyway, we don't have any kids yet, but we're both working and going to school so budget is the biggest concern (hence me "saving my pennies"). She doesn't mind me having gadgets, it just has to either be a need or something she would love as well. I've taken her to B&N and told her "Just play around with the Nook Color for a minute." She always says "I don't know what to do when you say that." I like the cook-books angle because she does want to get more into cooking and one of her friends brought up that very point.
Please keep the suggestions coming! With the combined intellect on here, we can get me that Nook!
Thanks again!

My wife was the very same way, take her to the store and she just stares at the Nook Color saying "what do I do". I went ahead and bought her one for Christmas anyway. As soon as she turned it on she was hooked.
My wife is very much a facebook nut so she enjoys the fact that she can read and then flip the NC sideways and browse the full facebook website on a whim. And it helps to that she is an avid reader so once she got down the fact that she could have multiple books going at once... she now has whole book cases and home screens dedicated to different books depending on her "mood".
Ultimately, you don't NEED a Nook Color. That's tough to sell. But you mentioned school... this is great for school whether reading a pdf text book or a lit book for a class. Studying is good too, say you need to look up something online while your nose is in your real books. Well just pull the NC out and seconds later you got your answer all without the clutter of a full netbook/computer on the desk. Looking at papers taking notes... there are a lot of academic roads you can take if you head down the path of rooting.
All in all my wife was a netbook candidate too...
But once I bought her the NC she just took off with it. If your wife understands enjoying reading a book, then to her this "gadgety" Nook Color is a "readers netbook". Or heck if you take the time it’s almost an academic netbook of sorts.
Anyway good luck convincing but in my opinion the nook is hard to wrap your head around until you really get time to sit and comfortably mess around with it. The Nook Color is so customizable with rooting that really you get out what you want out of it, just takes time to let it mold itself into your life.
That’s my .02 hope it helps
I have an idea, how about you grow a pair and just buy it Im married and my wife spends a majority of my money, so when I want something I buy it, lol
We have 2 android phones, 2 laptops and a desktop in our house, but I think im going to buy a NC and root it so I have a facebook/web machine laying around thats more portable than her big a$$ macbook pro and my stupid work laptop...
I started off pushing for something much more expensive. When I showed her I could buy something for half the price, she happily agreed. Seriously, after I explained what I wanted it for she was very supportive of my decision.
honestly though, take her to the mall, let her try on something nice and then offer to let her get it. She will think your being sweet, then you stop at Barnes & noble on the way home for payback

Were I to take the tactic you're suggesting and "grow a pair and just buy it," my wife would immediately take that pair, cut them off and stuff them in her purse so they'd always be close at hand to remind me what happens when I listen to people on the internet. And she'd return the nook. No, my friend. That would be disastrous.

This is your best bet, works great for me

What got you started on developing and hacking?

There are a lot of people here who spend many hours a week hacking and developing ROMs and various apps, to the great enjoyment and benefit of thousands of users. There are many more who may not be involved in writing code, but who test-drive the creations, report bugs, offer what support they can, etc. I reckon no-one would keep up all this work more or less for free while juggling work, studies, relationships, kids, etc unless they really enjoyed it.
What got you started on this track? How did you begin? How long have you been at it? Have things changed a lot since you began?
I'm no programmer. The only reason I'm here is because I derive great pleasure from getting more out of whatever I happen to own (or at least getting more of what I need/want)--and I happen to own a couple of android devices. When I was a lad we didn't have much in the way of tech, and so I discovered the joy of squeezing the most possible work and entertainment out of eg. the crappy ancient computer we had at home.
I also have a strong desire to customise things I use to my own preferences and quirks and a strong dislike for having to spend money on getting things my way. It's always felt like the boring way out. Moreover, it's felt like a tremendous waste--why not spend the money on something that requires it? Eg. beer, although even there I prefer home-brewed. Nothing has changed, even though I'm now an adult free from the budgetary constraints of a lazy kid. If anything, I'm more inclined to try doing things myself, perhaps because I have a better idea now of what can be done.
Aside from that I guess it's all about the perverse pleasure of getting things to do what they're not supposed to do--or what people believe they can't do
How 'bout you?
Pretty much the same
Do any of you guys do this stuff for a living as well??
For me it's the appeal of customizing my devices, especially if I can make something cheap into something of real value. The NC is just about perfect for that.
...then there is the geek cred in the office.
First started with a hack for my router... then my SanDisk mp3 player... jailbroke my iPhone... and now my NC!
As raz stated, thanks to the hard work of others, you can get more value out of something than originally thought.
Plus the look from others that have the same item, and I've got something that they don't!
The evolution of my hacking lol....
Starting from like age 13
Dreamcast (not really a hack just took a cdrw lol)
Xbox (chip with evox rom)
ps2 (chip)
Xbox 360 (new DVD firmware)
iPhone jailbreak
various software keygen programming
Inspire 4g
Nook color!!
Ps3 jailbreak
Fun times

Best gamer controller for tab...

hello... this is actually my first post here.. so i knw some people would think im just a clown.. lol thats fine you have to start some how... i got my tab about one month ago i have been reading carefully most of the threads here and i have not seen a good controller for the tab... i know java and c++ so developing and helping is easy but lately i have been wanting to experiment with the a hardware part of the field... now this is a 2 mins drawing of what im going to attemp... like many of the devs and people the sacrifices thier time i also have a job and a family to take care of... so it might take a while i have not decided if im going to try to make it of plastic or silicon.... any ideas... now this is all home made do it yourself... cheap item soo prob ill be uploading on youtube.. once the product is done.. also i might have skip the thread where a similiar item is bing done so if you know of such an item please let me know so i wont waste my time. thank you..
You should try and get the wii controller to work, then murder all the buttons from that
if i design the case of plastic i could use those buttons... still it wont work though ahhahah i do have some controllers to spare..
I hope you are successfully as I too have been looking for a nice bluetooth controller. There is the icontrolpad which can be found at icontrolpad.com however I don't know if this will work with the tab or not. At 70 +dollars after shipping its too expensive for me to take a gamble on. Perhaps you can take a look and with your programming background you could make it work to us?
T-Mobile tab running latest Overcome
Great idea, once you have a working prototype you should get it protected, sell some via here and once you have some feedback etc try and license/sell it to a manufacturer
well im not trying to profit... all i want is to be able to make a good controller for tab owners .. so they can do it themselves i really dont have the time to market, or mass produce lol it would be really interesting though haha.
now well my next day off ill start doing the blueprints.. we will see how it will turn out
Great idea
Im waiting gamer controller work good for tab.

Trust me and get a patent. Even if you aren't in the business of making money off it if you don't patent it someone else will steal it get a patent and sue you for selling their product. Besides you can sell the patent (or part of the rights to it) after you have made the how-to available, if that is your cup of tea. No harm in making a buck of the work you do. Others would.
Oh and consider me intersted in the final product as I have been looking into a good controler for a bit.
so i found this buttons... so i bought them.. they actually work great a bit off the screen but nothing that interrupt the game play... so i guess i wont be doing anything lol no need these are inexpensive and practical....
so i wont let me post the link... search it on ebay by Ten One Design Fling Joystick Ninja iPad 2&1

kinect+android and ms....

Hello All!
I want to share an idea with you all.
First off let me tell you about myself so you can get an idea of why I want to do this project.
I am a 24 year old ms patient. I go through things like morning sickness and memory loss just to name a few. Its a terrible disease but unfortunately there isn't much I can do about it. My name is michael. I used to be able to remember everything fine, and this disease is just starting to get to me. Besides the random agonizing pain, I'd have to say the memory loss is quite the most annoying part of the disease. I also have autism and don't recognize faces at all. Essentially in a nut shell my daily social life is not great because of these problems.
Now instead of waiting to die, like most do, I'm going to ask for feedback and suggestions or even help if you want, which I would appreciate ever so much.
I know how to program some and have time. I see a few things that would make my life and hopefully many other peoples lives easier, that suffer from the same problems I have, and maybe some other problems.
I essentially want to hook up a kinect to a hat, have the hat contain the processing equipment, such as a low power x86 board and big ssd for storage. Essentially I want to have another "brain" and "eyes". Now I admit this won't be the prettiest thing but, as long as I can make it work, I won't care. I got inspired and thought, hey! What if I could make a device, that would help me recognize faces, places, objects, and sounds! It could be a assistive device and would help me when my memory gets worse. I know Microsoft released more code for the kinect that would help to program for this stuff too.
I want to get some glasses, like the Google glass ones and have them and my nexus 7 be the interfaces for the information stored in the hat, such as pictures matched with names and other important information I have in there. In a perfect world I would want to be able to do a gesture if I was confused and didn't know who someone was and the device would go to archives and be able to show me whom they are and any information I have about them. I would also like to be able to keep my heart rate in the HUD as well, its important to know when you have ms.
I would also like to utilize object recognition to prevent myself from getting run over again, because it hurts, haha. I would program it to recognize objects outside and perform calculations and warn me if I am "blind walking" again.
I think I could also use this contraption to recognize temperature so I don't burn my mouth while eating or touching something that's too hot. My body just doesn't respond the way its supposed to sometimes.
I think I could also add a accelerometer to it, which would let me know if I were off balance , would save me from falling over and I think could help with my posture as well.
I'm thinking of more things this could help me with but if I had these, I would be the happiest guy on the planet, even with the agonizing pain of ms. I would be able to fight back against the problems I have that put me in more pain, or just plain make me look like I'm stupid. It would help me hold an job for sure. I would explain to my boss a million times, of why I have to wear such a contraption if I had to, doesnt bother me.
If you want to help, please let me know. I'd gladly accept donations as well, as my meds are not cheap, and take most of my income. Ideas are just as welcome too. If you helped me, I promise we'd be friends for life. I just can't go another day knowing I have these ideas and I am not putting them to use. Maybe if I got a prototype I could get a more fashionable device built for the other unsung heroes that have the problems I do. I appreciate your time so much.
Interested but a little hesitation

Well I was searching ideas for my final year project of BS to work with kinect. The idea you gave is very good but the thing is its scope. It is covering a big scope problem while I have to make the project within a year and I don't have much knowledge of working with kinect. But I am interested in implementing this idea. If you will share more briefly, this could be implemented.
my email id is : [email protected]
P.S. Do mention proper subject of the mail i.e. related to kinect project
Thanks

Old organ player learning piano

Something totally off-topic....
My missus wants to try and have the kids learn piano... The older one shows an aptitude towards music, and she has had several toy pianos and plays them well enough I guess... The younger one probably will too - music is in her family. Anyway, long story short, I now have a piano.
So, I used to be a reasonably good organ player (i.e. 2 manuals and pedal board), but I stopped playing about 15 years ago... I reckon I could give this a bash too, and I dusted off my old sheet music and started giving it a go... I've forgotten most of the chords but I have a couple of toys that show me where to place my mitts, so it's within the realm of learning again. After a few days, I can play a few hours in the seat, I can play a couple of songs through with some reasonable success. Funnily enough, my brother could play guitar well, but nobody else in my entire extended family could so much as carry a tune in a bucket.
Now, an organ and piano look pretty much the same... But they're certainly not. So I feel like a total n00b at this because I'm hitting the keys too lightly to register, or inconsistently in pressure. And of course I keep tying my hands in knots because I would play with my hands on different manuals on an organ. And the pedals do different things too. I had a look through beginners books, but I already know how to read the music, and I know what key to hit to sound C.. But starting to go higher than this, they of course assume knowledge of how to play a piano..
So therefore, if anyone has some experience in this, can you recommend some resources to help transition? If I really have to go back to square one, I hope there are some beginners books out there without the friendly cartoon characters offering their encouragement
