Is it worth buying one now? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically I need an E-reader. I'm running out or shelf space for books and was looking at this vs a nook. nook is 250 and I can get one of these from t-mobile for 99 and a small data plan. Im more inclined to do the tab since I travel and could use this all over.
TLR does this still have some development life in it or are they getting rid of it pretty much to make room for the 4G?

Got a verizon tab and love it! Perfect size and runs everything I need. Can't beat the price.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App

My primary use is as a phone, and then as an e-reader.
Throw in all the other stuff it can do and take into account the size - it's perfect

I tend to use mine as a media player and library, over 500 books on sd card, so I would recommend. Throw in you can use as phone, email and sms, not to mention facebook and twittter and its an awesome little gadget...
Would recommend...

I took the plunge. Got one for 99.00 from t-mobile. The data plan for it is rather cheap.
I'm happy I went this route. This is MUCH more versitile then the nook by far.
I'm not sure I want to root it yet. From what I am reading about the roms, there are few that offer full functionality. I'll wait for the stock update and see where to go from there.
Thanks!

I'm new to the Tab, in fact, my Tab just arrived 2 hours ago. I spent the last 6 months with the nook color and loved it. For me, the nook color's price made sense (and still does) and the dev support is fantastic. With the Tab coming down in price and having hardware that will remain relevant longer than the nook's, it made it easy to justify selling the nook to subsidize the purchase of the Tab. Either way you decide you'll end up with a great device, but my brief interaction with the Tab tells me you may like it better. I surely do.

[Q] Any idea when Nook Color II will appear?

I am really close to buying a Nook Color, but with my luck an updated model will be available shortly after. I would be willing to wait a couple of months if a new one was on the horizon.
Then again, I could get one now, then give it to my g/f when a new one comes out.
i doubt it, ive heard nothing about a new model, in fact why would they release a new one? this one does everything they would want the device to do. maybe they would do something about the handful of design flaws.. but it does not appear to have created enough buzz to warrant a redesign. Not to mention the fact that this one is rather new to the market.
I wouldn't expect a nook color 2 for some time, if at all. B&N is hurting pretty bad as a company (read: hemorrhaging money). I know they struck gold Jerry with the original nook (~30% market share for e-readers), but that still doesn't change the fact that B&N can't close stores fast enough.
B&N put out an ultra-fancy e-reader, one that is vastly over-qualified for what they wanted it to do, so there's lots of room for them to grow into as they release updates. As far as we know, the nook color (hardware wise) can handle both Froyo and Gingerbread with ease, and by the looks of it HoneyComb as well. Also, it was about a year inbetween the two nooks being released, so I would count on almost 1.5-2 years before we start hearing rummors.
I say, get one while you have the cash.
Other plans
I'm pretty sure that B&N is going to shift their goals to building out their Development platform before planning new hardware. Besides, they aren't making their margin on these Nooks, but rather setting up a somewhat razor/refill market that will (hopefully) get people into stores and more interested in their eBooks.
They might NOT be on top of the stack right now, but I'd go to B&N before setting foot in a Borders...

I'm sorry but by this logic... why buy anything tech based? I don't need to think about buying the Iphone 4, I know that 5 will be out soon. Shortly after that 6, so on and so forth.
You need to read less what HACKERS are doing, and more what people SHOULD be doing with a Nookcolor. In the E-Reader market, the nookcolor is the top of the line model. When you look at other E-Readers many people rather have E-Ink (or its at least a common complaint), Currently a real "Nook Color" base doesn't exist. A lot of the features are not fully formed, and completely designed. Many Magazines, do not appear on the market. Even a lot of the actual "E-Reader" aspects are not all there, but lets move past this.
For there to be a "NookColor 2" there needs to be a reason to justify a better version. Unlike Apple B&N cant really afford to do an upgrade like the 3g to 3gs. The screen is very high grade, theres no real lag reading, the E-Reader programs are way better than the default one, backlit, color, etc. The most an upgrade would have would be more a redesign, theres nothing else it needs that it doesn't already have. Things like more memory would fall short, 5 gigs is more than enough for the core function, and buying a memory card is not that much of a hassle.
I agree, no upgrade coming this year. Feel free to buy!

Check out this link, it's a wiki for investers: http://www.wikinvest.com/stock/Barnes_&_Noble_(BKS)
Now go down to "business growth."
B&N is, for a lack of a better term, bleeding money at an unsustainable rate.
Hell, they lost over $40 Million in just the last half of 2010. That's more than they made in the entire year of 2010. And on top of that, they earned HALF of what they made in 2009. Their operating margin(% of the difference between cost and retail of products sold that can go towards profit, or return on sales) fell from 2.8% to 1.3%(BTW that's god-awfull)
Even with their sales increasing nearly by double digits quarter after quarter. They make so little(% wise) that the increase of sales is overshadowed by the increase of costs assosiated with selling more of something.
So, pretty much half of the company just breaks even. The other half either losses money, or losses LOTS of money.
Don't be surprised if B&N doesn't survive long enough to honor our 1yr warrenties.
The real question is. Who's going to buy them? And, will the nook product line survive the transfer of ownership?
Edit: added comment about increasing sales.

Actually, I am not the type of person to sit back and wait for the latest version to come out, unless it has been some time since the original came out. Also, even if a new version comes out it has to be a big enough change for me to buy it. For instance, I bought the first generation iPod Touch, but didn't spring for the subsequent Gen. 2 or 3 because they were only minor upgrades, in my opinion. But when Gen. 4 came out, I upgraded.
The Nook has been out since last fall, I believe, and I remember reading on some tech site (CNET, maybe?) that this spring a new Nook Color would appear with 3g. I would only get this, however, if the 3g was free like on the Kindle.
In any event, where would you guys be more likely to purchase a Nook Color -- at an online retailer, or go directly to your local B&N store?
Aww that is news is bad for BN...my three stores always have people in them and two of them I always have to wait in line...unless I am there at odd hours
If I can buy locally for almost the same price...I will always buy locally. Now if I could have obtained the nook for $200 online...you bet I would have gone online! I think most "e-reader" people would prefer to go to a physical store than buy online...but look at the success of the Kindle...
Another aspect my stores are pushing are the Nook Color classes or meeting to share tips and tricks and how toos on the NC. While these dont apply to me...I would imagine they would appeal to the mass users of the NC.

Looking into buying a Nook Color

I want to get the best deal on one of these, is Craigslist the place?
Or should I buy new for $250? or are there some going for 200 new?
Retail, you'll find them new for $250. (I haven't seen them go on sale)
There was a deal on B&N's eBay store (that only applied to ebay purchase) for $50 off... making it $200. But that deal has since expired.
After that there is the Craig's List or ebay route to take your chances and buy a used one.
Although I'm sure most people will not have problems, I wouldn't buy a nook over ebay or craigslist and I'd spend the extra $50 for new. That way you have full warranty for one.
That's true. I'm trying to convince my mom to get one but she keeps saying that there will be much better technology in a couple of months...
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
There will be... for 600-800 bucks.
Though the new resistive Coby model looks very interesting for $170.

yeah, but that's like saying you should get a galaxy tab or Xoom over a Nook. For the price there is nothing like it. Sure in a year from now we might see more, but in two years from now, we'll see something twice as good as that, so it's all on when you want to get into the game. I personally bought the nook with the thought that a year or year and a half from now I'm going to upgrade and spend the good money on a good one (if I still want it)
There is always something better coming out tomorrow. You just have to figure out what it is that you want in a tablet. I for one wanted a tablet to mess around with a decent price point that has android on it and i can download some apps and have somehing to easily browse the web. I originally bought a archos 101 which is a very cool product but after a couple of weeks I realized i couldn't stand the viewing angles of it, i mean i could barely stand to look at it in landscape mode and it was unbeariable in portrait mode as it just messe with my eyes. So i got the nook color and the screen is fantastic. I've rooted it and installed my favorite launcher and some simple apps that i enjoy using. Plus the great thing bout the nook color is a lot of people are hacking it and developing roms for it and someday hopefully we will have a nice version of honeycomb to play around with.
This may or may not be of help to the OP, but, there is a $15.00 Gift Card offer available for Referral.
With the Groupon B&N GC, I made a small purchase and along with it a free trial of B&N Membership; also I registered my NOOK COLOR bought from B&N Ebay offer. Not sure, which one triggered it, but I received Email from B&N with the above offer.
So, you may want to check with your friends near you.
Regarding purchase for your Mom: her age, eyesight and nimbleness of her fingers, would be a major consideration to make sure a 7" tablet will suffice. Notwithstanding, these factors for older people, I feel this is the best bargain in its price range.

honestly I wouldnt buy it used.. I was considering buying one on craigslist and decided to go to the store... this is why i wouldnt buy it used..
My first nook.. returned it in less than an hour because it had rippling of the LCD beneath the digitzer.
My second nook, returned and exchanged it 6 days later because the bezel was creaky, volume button would stick on the + and it had horrible light leaking on the bottom right (Almost like a big yellow arc you could see at night no matter what brightness setting it was set to).
Now i am on my third nook color.. This one has dust underneath the digitizer between the LCD, creaks alot too..
Based on my experience i would highly recommend spending the extra bit of money just for the 14 day return\exchange policy coverage.. the quality control on these devices sucks.
I have no troubles, but highly recommend getting one new, just for the peace of mind of replacement if there is a hardware problem.
I think I'll pull the trigger once (hopefully) the B&N-Ebay discount happens again....I was on the fence last time last time it had a $50 discount.....
Mine is just perfect out of the box, not any single problem, love it so much.
Would anyone be able to recommend a reseller that ships to the UK? Or one that's based here preferably.

E Bay NC
Got a $200 one on E Bay from B&N New, tried booting Froyo from SD. For some reason the MicroSD went in between the back cover and Chassis. Since I had to take it apart to extract the card, and probably voided the warantee
I decided to go the auto-nooter route and use the sd for storage. Thr back does seem a little creaky now, but everything works fine. Hate those micro sd's, already lost one, and broke another.

I have a current model Coby, with the resistive screen. I don't like it. I'm use to the touch screen on my OG Droid. Also have a NC and I think it is a good tablet for the price. I couldn't see paying $600 for a tablet, especially if I bricked it from messing around with it.
it is true, the dev community for the NC is so much larger than the Coby community.

Thanks; the new Coby (shipping from Amazon soon) adds multitouch and a front camera, so it mimics the iPad2 to a tiny degree. Unfortunately I still don't know any retailers that carry it locally so I could see just how bad the touchscreen is. (I've used Windows Mobile resistive screens, and I think they're fine!)

NY Times article on the popularity of the Nook Color

I bought the Nook Color for my wife, she likes to read on it, and I get to tweak it and play with it as a tablet. Lately I used it more than her of course. And she doesn't mind what i do to it as long as she can still read her books.

Good article. I think we (rooters) are a big part of the success, not just because we buy them but we make the sales numbers look good enough to continue the push. It is also such an elegant looking device that the more people see them, the more they sell. I see a lot of them on the commuter train I take to work every morning. I would say I see more of them than iPad (I still see more original nooks, kindles, and Sony ereaders than anything). iPad sales are boosted by people that buy them because they are cool and want to use them at home. They are really too big and heavy to use comfortably on the train in my opinion and I am a 250 lb guy.
I wasn't aware of the problems Apple is having with magazine publishers. I am not a big magazine reader but I get Men's Health and it looks great on the Nook (both in the app on CM7 and the stock - I dual boot). There is no way that I would buy each edition at $4-$5. $2 a month for a subscription is a much more attractive price for me.

Very ineteresting. I never realized magazines on the Nook Color were basically just PDF files.
Hopefully, publishers will eventually tweak their magazines so they fit the Nook Color's screen dimensions better "out of the box." I don't mind pinching and Zooming, and it's nice that the magazine is identical to the newstand copy, but it would be cool if the articles fit the screen better from the get-go without the need to pinch and zoom.

Does anyone have any detail about this? maybe they'll drop the price of the current NC ($250), does someone know of a better deal? TIA

No one knows for sure but speculation is it will be an update or an additional option the the original eInk Nook, not the Color. The Nook Color (NC) was only introduced last November as the NYT article states. With the latest upgrade and addition of apps, many think it is too soon to replace it.
The original Nook is about 1 year old which, in technology these days, means it's old.
Beyond that I haven't paid too much attention to what the actual details of the announcement might be. I'm not interested in another Nook. I'm happy with my NC.

(Outdated) If a New Nook Color comes out May 24 will you trade up?

Just curious to see how many people would "trade-up" to the newer model *if* (very small chance I know) B&N announces tomorrow that they're releasing a faster and more full featured tablet/reader.
I'm of two minds about it, if it ends up being a new NC (which I doubt myself) that is better than the current NC, it'll probably cost $50-100 more, in which case why not just get one of the dedicated tablets out on the market? (Or wait for Amazon's quad core Hollywood tablet..)
What do you think?
I would wait for Hollywood, hell even Coyote. I don't really have money to just throw around myself, so even if they did release a newer Nook Color, I doubt it would be a big enough difference in performance or features to make me go buy it tomorrow.
In fact, with the possibility of Hollywood being only $450 at launch and from amazon (who you know is going to go out of their way to make sure they have plenty in stock) I may not even trade up to the Iconia or Transformer this fall like I had wanted to.
Which kind of sucks since the wife wants a Nook color now. (Was going to give her mine...)
Supposedly (PCMag article) Amazon "might" be pricing the 7-inch Coyote tablet a $349 and the 9.7-inch Hollywood tablet at $449 (assuming lowest storage price). If Amazon throws in free 3G for apps downloads I'm sold (doubt it though since their cloud computing mp3/streaming video would end up costing them a pretty penny with free 3G).

here is the article about the new nook:
***.engadget.com/2011/05/24/barnes-and-noble-announces-new-nook/
Doesn't sound like it has a lot to recommend it compared to nc, but we can still spend a few days speculating if it will boot from SD card... perhaps there are some applications where a "paperback" android device would be useful, especially if the disaffected sell them lightly used in the $100 range.

Correction, the original nook 3g is now 169. nook color is unchanged.
Touch screen e-ink? 80% less flashing (supposedly)? sd card? I'm sold. I wonder how long it takes to get it hacked and someone throw as a browser on there. e-ink touchscreen browser, even if just black and white, aounds very intriguing to me. Especially if it's better than the kindle's experimental browser.
this also assumes bn didn't take the hint from the first nc and locks the thing down like a bunker. Not to say there are some great devs out there but it would severley limit progress. This comming from a droid 2. Locked bootloaders =
I'd stay where i'm at right now. Working on saving money for a true tablet, but i like my NC as it is with HC now.
Why trade up? The Nook Color does everything I need it to do... IN COLOR. Running CM7 or phiremod is the icing on the cake...

[Q] Bionic Worth the extra $100?

Hello,
I would like to first start out by stating that I am new here and have been reading and researching about a lot of different phones for my verizon upgrade.
I have narrowed it down pretty much to the Droid Bionic and the X2. However I currently do not have 4g access in my area so its not hugely important to me to have 4g. The price difference between the x2 and bionic is $100 more so its a bit of a jump. Also I currently have an LG Vortex so I know that almost any phone is an upgrade.
So I want to know if it is worth the extra $100 over the x2 if 4g is not needed.
I know it has 1gb ram vs 512 on the x2 or if maybe there is a more recommended phone idea (I know this is the bionic forum) I really like the 4.3 in the screen size and would not really want to go below 4" is screen size. I tend to be a technology power user and will be taking advantage of as many features as possible and maybe some custom themes/roms.
Yes I know the bootloader is locked but I feel that it will be unlocked soon I see the drive in the community for that so if not by Motorola it will be by someone.
Thanks I appreciate the input... If you recommend another phone please post why vs the x2 and bionic.
Do you gave a radioshack around your area?
I got my bionic for 199 jus a little over a week ago
Not sure if they are still having the sale but worth a check

This is why i went with the bionic.
I had the Droid X2 for 3 months, it was a ok phone nothing to show off, the Loud-speaker was somewhat low not very clear,The cpu/gpu was not the greatest or on par want i wanted it to be or hoped it would be,The screen was pretty good, the biggest problem's i had with the droid x2 was radom reboots/boot loops on stock, and the music poping sound from my music from the speaker of the phone, and this phone was a replacement for the Samsung Fascinate.
now to the Bionic
I have had this phone for about a week now
Its very fast, The Cpu/Gpu are very fast on stock i am not even rooted running all stock have a ton of apps on the phone and it runs very fast, and the screen is very nice looking, sound is very nice sounding, speaker sound is very good, no poping or anything of that, the 3g works very nice very fast, loads web pages very fast. the 1gb of ram helps alot with the o.s. the front camera is very nice and takes nice picture's and the 8mp camera works very well, and the 1080p recording works very very very well, i recorded my friend for 10 minutes messing around and it was very clear and the sounded very clear and nice.
When you get 4g the phone will scream, but it will eat the battery alive,
But i would if you have 3g on or 4g get the extended battery. i did get the extended battery and its alot longer lasting but alittle bigger, so if you get the extended battery get the case made for the extended battery it will not fit a nomal case. i already tried.
but i would chose the bionic because overall its a great builit phone, and verizon/moto already has a patch coming out in nov to fix them, and there is a great dev team working on roms/themes for this phone, so its only going to get better for this phone
if you are from the TOLEDO AREA please pm me and i can get you in contact with a guy who will help you out. he is a manager from a toledo store
I do have a radioshack but im on upgrade pricing and i've checked the website and a few resellers the best i have found is $249 but i would be getting a car charger and screen protectors at no additional charge.
I will double check radioshack but they never seem to be cheaper here.
PS. Unfortunately I am not in the Toledo area. Thanks for the offer though.
amazon online has a good price, or you can call verizon customer service and explain to them and most of the time they will be more then happy to help you. if you look at my thread below, you will see verizon customer service does help and they go out of there way for the customer. so you should start there if you want to try to get a discount if thats what your aiming for.
If you hold on to your phones for more than 18 months, I recommend choosing the Bionic. With a 1GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM, decent graphical hardware and high resolution screen, it's going to have much greater longevity than a phone lacking any one of those features.
Dual core isn't a big benefit right now, but as soon as Android and third party programs more widely support multi-core processing, it will become very important. And 512 MB of RAM is barely sufficient for todays' high-end phones, much less for the operating environment a year or two from now.

Even with upgrade, you can still get Radio Shack's $199 deal. But the tax, $70 in Los Angeles, kills the deal. The best deal is still with Costco. They are out of the accessories, but they give you a mail-in rebate, instead.
If you really need a phone, get it Bionic. If you can hold off a few more weeks, you'll have more phones to choose from and find better deals on Bionic.

If you hold on to your phones for more than 18 months, I recommend choosing the Bionic. With a 1GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM, decent graphical hardware and high resolution screen, it's going to have much greater longevity than a phone lacking any one of those features.

Typically I do hold onto my phones for that long at least usually more like the 2 years between upgrades.
As for amazon the price is 249.99.
Radio shacks website says 299.99. with $100 mail in rebate (making it the 199) if you trade in your old phone but i can't be a smart phone. Also I am on a family plan and my mom already did the trade up to smart phone with $100 rebate so i have no line i can cheat that with... One more thing I currently have unlimited data and do not wish to lose that.
I'm not as concerned with the price as I am with making sure it is worth the extra cost.
if your going to pay close to $300 your better off just calling verizon customer service and ordering from them, and getting the extended battery while your getting the phone. but thats just me, it worth the price. its a great phone with alot of power and alot in its furture. but i will stop opening my big mouth lol

LOL I would rather not pay $300 or close to it but as far as its going i am not finding anything cheaper. although i did hear costco what is the price there?
i looked it up online on there website and its says $279.99
Ok so it seems I'm at that sub $300 price and stuck there... I might call and see what the price would be with extended battery. like you suggested
I had the X2 for almost a month, and am much happier with the Bionic. The original X was an awesome phone, the X2 was slightly better, and the Bionic is in a different league. I don't have 4G coverage either, but the 3G performance is more than adequate.
Good luck!

With my VZ upgrade and Amazon, the phone comes in at 220 bucks and I can keep my existing unlimited data usage. I too am about to take this plunge, I have found no solid reason to not get the Bionic, the dual core is an advantage in the future.
Check with Costco
Check with Costco. The are selling it for 199 with a car dock and several other extras. This deal is in store and not online.
By the way, I came from the Thunderbolt and the Droid 3, and this phone is much better than both for most of the reasons stated above. It took several tries with some defective units, but I am content now.
Hmm I would check with costco but I would need a membership or someone with one to buy me a gift card in order to make purchases from there.
Also if you buy from costco and lets say the phone is defective would i have to take it back to costco or could i go to a verizon store to get a replacement? being that the nearest costco is 45miles away
This is a terrific phone for many reasons. One, if you're into the whole "rooting" thing, and if you're not, you need to jump on the bandwagon!, the ROMS already being pushed out for this thing are amazing, which means in the future, this could very well be the phone that has numerous ROMS, etc, like the original Droid. It's very fast, I have never had any problems with mine. The problems that I have read about will be addressed with an OTA update, however, if you would not like to root.
U can get a 6o day free membership easy.just check online
Also try bestbuy and wirefly.com and letstalk.com both offer free shipping overnight not positive though

Don't go by radioshack.com pricing. Online pricing is different than in store pricing. The in store price on the Droid Bionic is currently $199.99 with no mail in rebate.
I got my Bionic @ Verizon for 149.99 (after Phone-Trade-In)
They advertise it at $299, but if you stand there and take to much of the Sale Reps time, he will bring the price down just to get you out the door. Then after he agrees to the $249, then ask about the $100 Phone-Trade-In. (He he says its not available anymore, then Verizon.com Lets you Trade in all kinds of phone https://www.trade-in.vzw.com/home.aspx - that site will tell you the price they will give you for different phones, and you can even trade in multiple phones to rack up some extra cash)
So far, I'm not impressed with the Bionic. And I'm EXTREMELY Annoyed at the fact that it doesn't allow apps to be Moved to the MicroSD Card. If give you the option to "Move to Media Area" but thats the 8GB of Internal Memory. The phone claims to have 16GB of Internal Memory, but it only allows you to access 8GB for music/photos/etc.
I paid $99 for a 32GB MicroSD card, which is just sitting in the phone not being used, because the Bionic Doesn't let ANY APPLICATION store cache/files to it. Evernote, which has always used the MicroSD and Has a option in the Settings to use the MicroSD, will not save to it. Instead it uses the Internal Memory. Games that download Extra Files, stores them to the Internal Memory instead of the MicroSD. I have two Games which require an additional download of roughly 300MB each, thats nearly a Gig of Space already gone from the Internal Memory. Then there are my Google Docs saved for offline access, E-Books saved for offline reading, and Many other things eating away at the small 8GB of memory. I Think this is do to the Bionic having the Phones Internal Memory Partitioned incorrectly, which is causing Application to think that the 8GB of Internal Memory is actually a SD Card. But oddly the Bionics Built In Camera application WILL save to my 32GB MicroSD. But its the only one out of the 14 Applications I've installed. Verizon Claims this is an error on the App Developer, and since Apps are 3rd Party, they provide no support.
There are other bugs; but I believe there is a update coming in Nov (I think someone mentioned it)
The Bionic Comes with a lot of Bloatware that can't be uninstalled unless you root the phone.
The Camera is kinda Crappy. Expected way better pictures from a 8MP camera. Its shoots HD Video, but they are small resolution videos.
Its quick, and HD games run smooth.
I've never had any other DRIOD, but I've had many ANDROID phones, and the Bionic is certainly not one of the better Android Phones. But thats expected from Motorola, since they have to customize everything, which sometimes causes them to fall short on functionality. I haven't owned a Moto-Phone since the Razor (which was a big fail)
If you get it, and Don't like it, you have 14 days to change - but know they will charge you a 35$ restocking fee.
Good luck in your choice
