Cooling solutions - LG Optimus 2x

Has anybody thought of any cooling solutions for this phone?
The things get stupidly hot when charging and i have read somewhere this can reduce charging performance?
Personally i am thinking about modding a case.

Casemodding a phone for better cooling performance? Where is this world going ?
But seriously my phone doesnt get super hot, while my buddy's xperia x10 does

Put your phone inside liquid and it will be LG Optimus 2x Liquid cooling system!!! Haha, JKJK!!!
How i cool my phone is the same theory as liquid cooling system. Just that the liquid(tap water) is outside.
Step one: take a NEW zip-lock bag(You don't want a swimming phone...)
step two: Fill it full of water, as full as possible.
Step three: Place your phone on top of the bag of water.
It worked for me. Cheers

Lol i like it

I bought some 120mm fans from NOX to build a case for my PC, have two of them extracting the air from inside the PC located on top of the PC case, that's the spot where i leave my LG charging ...

There are 2 ways that we can achieve this without looking too silly like lugging a liquid cooling system attached to the phone.
1) Fabricate a aluminum or copper backplate to replace the current one that is plastic.
2) Get a silicon case, remove the LG backplate, and slip a piece of copper cut into the shape of the backplate, to replace it, with the silicon case hold on to it. This is what I am planning to do, now just trying to find a shop that do the metal piece for me.

...or just always carry a freezer bag full with ice and when it gets hot just put the phone inside for few minutes
(just to clarify, my unit never got extra hot, not even after playing some hd games for 1h nor while charging)

??? Am I the only one that has no problem with the phone getting hot?... Neither during use or charging overnight...

No you're not, this does seem like a bit of an over-reaction to me.

What a stupid thread, never had any issues with my phone getting hot when charging over night.
Only time it gets hot is when i am using it as a wireless hotspot and its also charging.

Agree 100%. Those who are having those issues should replace their phones as it not seem normal otherwise LG should attach noctua coolers to each phone

Silicone cover/heat

I have noticed that with my phone in my silicone cover it seems my phone seems to heat up and at times overheat. As a mechanical engineer it theoretically makes sense. Looking for a sanity check.

drill some holes in it?
embed some aluminum for heat transfer?

Silicone doesnt conduct heat. Your sanity remains intact.

water cool it.
All you need is:
1) bucket of watter
2) your htc incredible
step one: Drop phone into water
step two: Remove phone
step three: Phone is now cooler then before
step four: Profit

it's the battery heating up from use, it's normal. if you are using the 1300 mAh that shipped with the phone then yeah, it does that.
all lithium-ion batteries get warm after a period of use, why the hell do you think they have a "flammable" warning on them? however, if your battery does get to hot, your phone will shut off, almost all circuits are wired with a fail safe break that if overloaded will cut connection to avoid the battery frying the phone. sort of like how your breaker box works in your house.
Agreed. I have a aftermarket 2700 mAH with a silicone cover and I only notice it heating up with use. During use I have seen temp with the Batt monitor @ 106° and just charging 88°
no silicone here and zero heat.

I used my phone without silicone and it still heated up, I noticed it less with the silicone case on.
Either way it's nothing at all to worry about, like another poster said it will shut off if it ever got considerably hot. Happens under constant or heavy usage.

Nexus 7 Qi Wireless Charging Mod

Hi everyone, thought I would share a mod I did to my tablet based off this guy on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6QcSpZHGFs&list=UUOxsHE9Vmxb32X66EUSWkOw&index=1
Note he used a Blackberry 8900 Energizer Qi Cover. I used an Apple Iphone 3G one and removed the coil.
Step 1: CAREFULLY remove the tape and casing around the Qi coil. The plastic comes apart easily. You want to avoid damaging the board and wires when removing the tape securing it to the Iphone case.
Step 2: Remove the nexus 7 cover. It clips off quite easily once you get a grip. I found it easiest to remove the sim slot cover and pry from there, but any opening should do.
Step 3: Place the coil. Note where I placed mine I had to peel back the bronze covering to allow the coil to penetrate the back of the case. Run the wires to the NFC connector. Note the position of the wires in the photo. Be sure to insulate the wires with tape and ensure no crossed points (which shouldnt be an issue anyhow).
Step 4: Remove the Iphone connector and solder the wires to either end of the NFC noting the correct positive and negative positions.
Step 5: Test. Note that it will enter docking mode when initially connected. If the docking notice keeps popping up that means that you do not have it centered and the connection keeps re-establishing. I used the LG Qi pad from Verizon for testing. Just pop the cover back on once done, and voila!
I preferred this to the Palm Pre inductive mod since my Nexus 4 uses the Qi standard. Hope this helps some of you!
You can disable the docking screen/options via 'DayDream' mode being turned off in display settings.

I did that mod too. Used the blackberry 8900 coil. Seems like it will take a while to fully charge the battery once its dead. I'm going to see if I can find a larger coil that can put out a higher voltage.. What is your total time to recharge your Nexus 7..? I finalized the mod today and am just charging my unit for the first time now. But it seems to be getting a low volatage as its still I'm single digits and its been on the charger for an hour or so already..
I'm getting 5 to 9 an hour with the lg charger. I'll post results when my energizer arrives and is tested.
What happens if you charge via the pogo pins (ex. a dock) and charge using a charging mat at the same time? I know this is unlikely, but I'm curious if this could cause damage to the tablet.
Does this work thru a case?

I've got the poetic flip case. It's a thinner plastic with leather. Think I'm sol? What if I increase the coil size? Will that increase the strength?

It's very simple. This is a great mod for a beginner tinker-er
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yep, very easy to do mod. The energizer seems to charge faster. I am going to have to test more thoroughly, but I am getting ~15% per hour with it thus far.
After more thorough testing my LG charging pad seems to average 9-13% an hour, whereas the energizer seems to only do 7-9 an hour. Decent for overnight charging, but certainly not very fast.
Two questions:
1) What's the total cost to do this. That is both a charging mat and a donor back door.
2) How much current (that's mah not voltage) do these doors provide? I'd assume they all supply 5V since that's the USB standard and most things charge that way nowadays. Do they have ratings on them or is it just the situation that they make a replacement door/back for the xxx device and you have to live with that if you have a xxx?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
The cost is that of a qi coil as described in post 1 and any qi mat.

I have been able to find the energizer base stations in clearance areas like Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target and sometimes goodwill. Any of the energizer stations are qi compatible. My wife was able to score a double station from goodwill with the BlackBerry coils for 20 bucks ya just gotta look around

Charging socket flap

I went to AT&T to try out the S5.
Overall a very nice phone however the one thing that I think will annoy the hell out of me is having to fiddle with that flap every time it's time to charge the phone.
I found it really hard to open and after a few tries I managed to get my finger nail under the slight lip but it was not very comfortable to do.
How are the rest of yo owners finding the handling of this flap?
I will be using a robust case for mine so wireless charging is out for me.
I heard back from both Spigen and Case-Mate who both said that it's unlikely charging would work through their cases and that's assuming the phone will still fit with the slightly larger charging back.

That's the only thing that I find annoying about the S5. I understand it needs to be covered for water/dust resistance, but it's still incredibly annoying. I have short nails (stupid nail-biting habit) so trying to open it is always a chore. I've actually resorted to using a small thumb-tac (lol) to open it and it works perfectly every time.
I'll definitely be looking at wireless charging options once they're readily available. I rarely use a case on my S5, just because I like how it feels in the hand without one, so the different back shouldn't be an issue.
I like knowing that dirt, dust and curious little kid fingers won't be able to affect the port. I have an otterbox that has a decent opening to allow for charging, been using it all day and its around 55% batt, so I'll be okay with the cover.
I have the spigen tough armor case and I can charge the phone with no problem. It's a minor inconvenience but it's worth having the peace of mind against getting water damage.

I actually like the idea of covering the port, it's just very poorly executed on this phone. I really liked the sliding 'door' on the Captivate. But it's something that I'll learn to get used to.

My wife has been using the S4 Active since her S3 had an unfortunate dunking. The S5 charging cover is much easier to use and and worth the effort if you've ever dealt with dropping the phone into, say, the washing machine.

Not being "lazy" but I have gel tips on my nails.. therefore opening this door without one of my kids/boyfriend or a thumbtack etc. is impossible for me. My 17-year-old suggested I rip it off but I refused because I want the dust and waterproof to remain.
I think the flap is the unfortunate, necessary evil for the water/dust proofing feature of the phone. I am not a fan of it either but it is what it is.

Home made QI wireless charging? Anyone?

Hi guys.....i love my zr but really disappointed with absence of accessories for it.
There are qi charging pads and accepters on aliexpress for 10 bucks a set... NOT FOR OWR PHONES of course.
I can fit in one inside of the rubber seal area and connect it with small wires to the battery.....
The question is.....have anyone tryed it before?
Sent from my C5503 using xda app-developers app
I wouldnt recommend forcing the pad under the battery door. If you look under there youll notice that the waterproofing works by letting the rubber gasket fall into a channel; if you add something thatll push the gasket away from the channel, it might be enough to let water in.
I actually just got my wireless charging pad for the Note 2 in the mail today. I'm planning to adapt it to my Xperia ZR but in a different way. I plan to put it between my phone and case, and connect it thru the docking connectors on the side of the phone. Ill update you with photos when im done if it comes out alright. Right now im just worried about how Im gonna get it to sit right without covering the flash.

Okay heres my update: i did what i was planning to; unfortunately its not incredibly elegant.
I used a charging pad for note 2 which i bought on ebay. The copper tips i used as pins for the charging pad were a bit bigger than they should have been so my case is a little warped on that side. Also the pressure from the case makes the pins not have great contact with the phone so it takes little fidgeting to get it to start charging. Besides that though it works fine. I set it on the wireless charger at night and the phone is at 100% in the morning.
This weekend im gonna redo the soldering of the pins with some slightly smaller ones and see if i can make it... prettier.
The only thing to keep in mind is that +5v is the pin closest to the top of the phone and gnd is the bottom one. I also had to modify the charging pad to g3t the flap to come out higher up from the pad, otherwise I would have had to cover the flash.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using XDA Free mobile app
Yet another update. I tried to make it more elegant by reducing the thickness of the pins but to no avail. Doing this mod with a tpu (flexible plastic) case was a waste of time since theres no way to keep pressure on the pins and make the case sit flush.
Sent from my C5502 using XDA Free mobile app
What about glueing the connector to the phone? With this solution no pressure from the plastic case is required I guess...

I've been using a QI wireless charging pad for a couple of weeks without any problem. As another user posted, the only effect I've noticed is a slight bulge in the back panel. It doesn't get especially hot (although it does warm a little more than with USB charging.)
The only other thing is that I've got a wallet case on my phone and charge through that (so there's some plastic between the phone and charging plate.)
I have the expower ultra thin card and in the instructions it tells you to remove the copper screening sticker from inside the original back plate as it causes extra heat when charging. Its a ***** to peel off as well. Gets warm but not enough to bend my phone by any means and it charges fine through my defender case there's no noticeable bulge in the back plate either. If i want to put it in water i'll throw an otterbox preserver on it.
