I have a rooted tab. will I be able to update firmware using kies or I have to unroot first?
As I understand it, it should not be a problem. Rooting shouldn't disable this. You aren't altering the firmware per say, you are giving yourself root access.
Maybe I am just impatient to get the GB. Kies always says I have the latest firmware.....Reluctant to flash, never done it before. Also so many things may not work....
I have a rooted SGT. Thru Kies I got the message that I could upgrade to new firmware. But I couldnt flash the upgrade until I unrooted my Tab. So be patient ;-D or use a custom rom.

If you follow the guide included with the overcome rom... And i mean follow it exactly... Than you have very little chance of messing anything up... Most people who mess it up skipped steps or didn't flash with a full battery...

i think you have to unroot cuz maybe a problem will comes up if u updated via kies , cuz all ur system gonna renew . so u better clean the dirty stuff 1st then do a update via kies

Yeah and you should "focus" on what he wrote. He was referring to the users post where he said he was "reluctant to flash" ie update via Odin/Heimdall.
My friends, thanks for all the replies....I am busy reading all the stuff regarding before and after gingerbread flash here and elsewhere. Perhaps I will flash later on. Or wait for the official samsung upgrade...

im thinking odin 3 will work if i have the right kernel and stock rom
I have read that Odin fails for some trying to flash stock from CM7, maybe has to do with the drivers and the fact CM7 doesn't use Samsung code. Use Heimdall to flash back.
Also as someone has posted you need Gapps in order to use any of the Google apps. It's in the OP for the CM7 installation instructions. I think you can install Gapps through ROM Manager, I don’t use CM7 myself so I am not 100% sure about how you install Gapps.

At the bottom of the odin one click op there is 2 stock firmware packages. Try either of those...
They include rom and kernel.
And since you're on cm7 you might have to install google drivers.

Hi, I have a rooted galaxy tab. I recently just installed a custom rom and after, it doesn't boot anymore? It only stucks at the boot screen. May I know what's the issue here? Is it a brick or something? Any helps appreciated. Tks!
it sounds like a soft brick, which isn't too bad at all Just switch your tab over to Download Mode and then flash another ROM that is confirmed working on your device.
A hard brick would be if your tab didn't power on in any way at all no matter what, and that would be pretty bad :/
Hi, tks for ur reply! Do u mind telling me where to download those roms? Tks once again!

You may have a corrupted /dbdata. If that's true, no matter how many new ROMs or firmwares you install, it won't help you.
This should take care of your problem:

I installed overcome kernel with many other rom before moving to redpill (because of bluetooth keyboard compatibility). It works great with most of rom 2.3.3 and 2.3.6 base. Don't hesitate to try the kernel with other rom.
Btw, did you try pushing new pit file through odin?

You'll have to flash to 2.3.5 first then root. Just read it over and over and it'll make sense. I came from an iPhone and it took me a couple days to get used to all the android language...

And how do you propose that he flash ICS without increasing the binary counter? His Note is unrooted.
Ayway, going straight to ICS would be unwise at this point, IMO. ICS poses enough problems for experienced users, let alone fresh ones.
So I'd stick with gingerbread for now if I were you. When you get some experience with your new phone, then you can flash anything you like.

You can't without increasing the binary counter, but if he's going to root it, he'll lose his warranty anyway, if that's what your worried about. Flashing ICS with Odin is very easy. I did it on my Note coming from 2.3.6 and works with no problem. But yes, it DOES INCREASE your binary counter.

You lose warranty when your binary counter shows 1 or more, not when rooting. If your counter is NO, you can always flash back a stock Rom (unroot) and your repair service will never know you have tempered with your phone.
As I said, do some reading before offering advice.
Just i want to add this
Dear, rooting lose warranty, but it is very very easy to regain it by just simply unrooting(flashing a stock ROM is just enough)
while if you raise your counter, really nothing more difficult in note thn to reset it on GB. So i do favor chasmodo's concern.
anyway

download this and just start with I have non rootable ROM, i dont think you will have more query after this.

You need to be on Gingerbread first before you can flash your phone with an ICS ROM. The following web site gives an easy step by step tutorial plus download links to get ICS on your SGS.

or get 2.3.x updated from kies , than root it and then do cyan9 , its best. worked like charm. just read the instructions and follow it.

You can update your device till 2.3.6.
Unfortunatelly I only have a german page with the explanation.
Actual firmware you find here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570488
I think in this thread the users could help you.
Yes, using the Odin. Look here:
w*w*w.theandroidsoul.com/galaxy-s-gets-android-4-0-based-aokp-rom/
For install ICS, you need first install a GB 2.3.6 rooted, look here :
w*w*w.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvu/
end enjoy.
Atencion, take very carefull in this journey. Read all with very carefull.
Sorry for my poor english.
BEWARE: You are coming from Froyo - so you have to flash an android version that includes a socalled "bootloader" (some versions don't include that, as far as I know).
Reed carefully first before flashing.
Thanks guys I did it through Odin now on 4.0 whoooooo lol

I don't claim to know everything but I do know this. Being that he is on 2.2 you will have to flash to gingerbread first and make sure whatever you flash has bootloaders included otherwise you will have a bricked phone at some point along your way to CM9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Go to that link and it will give you several one click options to get you to a variety of stock GB roms. Also for your intitial root there are several one click applications available that will get you fixed up you should just have to google them.
Yeah I'm used to having to flash new firmware, flashing cwm again then new Rom.that was on my old sensation. But thanks I will tell him to update to gingerbread via kies.then I will flash a custom kernel via Odin then just update to cm9

Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If he is on 2.3.5 GB already, root the phone and flash a corn kernel so he will have a working CWM
If he has kk4 gb 2.3.5, then he has the gb bootloaders. So all u need is to flash a kernel with cwm and then the Rom of ur choice copied to ur internal sd and u will be good to go. So see this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19425513&postcount=1

Yes GB bootloaders are the requirement and are even backwards compatible. You should be able to install anything from Eclair to Jelly Bean now without problem. But as the previous response states make sure you follow the directions for whatever rom you are using so you are less likely to run into issues.
