before I do this update should I run awizard or lokiwiz to get a backup...
should I do this first just incase....
what about SIM/CID unlock should I do this first or will I still be able to unlock in the future after installing this update?
any help would be kindly apprecieated...
I am about to upgrade but I dont know what I should do...
thanks..

If you want to upgrade but don't know what you should do, then why don't you start reading some threads on this forum?
When you don't know what you're doin' I can only give you the advice to leave it the way it is
It's not that I don't wanna help ya out, but read first before starting to do some experiments. There are enough people that made certain mistakes before you so just check it out
hey thanks...
I have been reading for a month now and everything seems to say differnet things... I have read nearly every thread on this forum just I learn better from hands on and I have not tried anything as of yet...
thanks for you kind help... im not a dumb ass who doesnt know how to read and doesnt know how to use the search feature... but thanks for your kind help..
@c-pimp ... speaking only for myself, I haven't answered your posts on this because it doesn't appear that you HAVE read through all the postings...
Let me lay it out for you and you take it for what it's worth.
First, if you're willing to take the chance that you MIGHT brick your device then that's YOUR decision. What works for one typically works for another but ... YMMV. No one here is going to accept the responsibility for your device. Most folks here suggest that you stay with your provider's upgrades. If you have such concerns then I don't think you're ready, my opinion.
Second, if you plan on doing anything other than an official sanctioned upgrade then you must CID and SIM unlock, period. This, if done correctly, is forever.
Third, what do you have on your phone that you need to backup? I've heard people speak here of taking 6 hours to rebuild their device after an upgrade and I've never understood exactly how it could take so long. Folks here have compiled very nice cabs with most of all of the registry tweaks one could need. I personally have a folder on my SC that contains all my necessary cabs, security certificates, etc. I'm down to an hour or so to completely rebuild a freshly flashed Wizard. The original ROM's are available so there's no reason to back that up. And if you are doing a major upgrade when you flash the restore will probably break your device as many registry settings, etc are different.
Anything else I can help you with, just ask!
And please don't take offense at me as I mean no harm and am not flaming you nor speaking out of spite.
That's what I meant as well, because you said "I'm about to upgrade, but don't know what to do?" I think that there are many people here telling you to leave it alone
It wasn't my intention to flame, not at all!
Like said before backups are very personal things. Some people want to backup their complete ROM while others just want a backup of the settings from their previous ROM. I one of the people that uses the last method. But I NEVER restore a backup from an old ROM onto a new one. That's because there might be some changes in the registry of the new ROM.
Second, I unlocked my SIM\CID almost the moment it was possible on this forum. Like said before, that's a one time operation
I run the latest t-mobile 2.26 ROM and didn't have to edit NBF files or anything like that. Just install and enjoy.
Once again, it was not my intention to flame. I think it's a bad thing when people say "I wan't to do this, but I haven't got a clue how to do it" to tell them just to flash their device or something like that. Because when it fails you would answer: "I bricked my device, thanks for your kind help!"
been playing with my phone so much I have forgot to respond to alot of questions I asked.... lol... sorry bout that... I wasnt tryin to be a **** when I responded either... I did read alot on the forums but then I would get stuck up on a random post and be confused if I should do something different...
like I said hands on is really the best way for me to learn and now im totally trying new stuff on my phone every day... so sorry if I sounded like a **** when I responded ( I admit I was a little frustrated with my day that day)

@c-pimp - Glad you're on the path to enlightment
(and WE didn't think you were a ****!!!)
Best of luck!
The ROM issued by T-Mobile [2.26] DOES NOT require unlocking your phone.
Can you imagine all the people who own an MDA who have never been to this or any other "tweak" forum installing the ROM and not knowing about unlocking and then it bricked there phone? T-Mo customer service wouldn't be able to handle any other calls but theres.
So back up that puppy and get to upgrading...
One thing I noticed... I downgraded the radio ROM to 1.12 from the one supplied with the 2.26 ROM. So much better!!!
Hi, I'm buying a G1 tomorrow, and i just have a few questions. Is it worth rooting??? and what are the Pros and Cons of rooting the G1??
Yes its worth rooting. Everything is pro and no cons. To much stuff to list.
oooo ok. I heard that if you hacked it, you will lose the warranty for the phone. is that true???
Its well worth it to have a rooted g1. Tethering, theming, audio hack, etc.
Just make sure you go through the required reading and educate yourself before you just dive in. There are TONS of great threads and tutorials around here if you search.
The hardest part is deciding which ROM you want! There are lots of those as well.
You can always revert back to stock firmware if you need to.

Just don't call T-Mobile up and tell them you did that. There is no way for them to find out. Many people have gotten replacement phones while having root.
I got a replacement on a bricked G1 that was stuck on a custom bootscreen.. Blatant evidence of tinkering. T-mobile never said a word.
Ok, thank you guys. Soo that implies that it doesnt do anything to your warranty. And how can i avoid the phone from bricking???
follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
IMO the two most important steps is making sure you have a PVT board, and making sure to flash the new Radio before flashing the new SPL.
EDIT: the only way to truly "brick" your phone is to mess up when flashing the Radio/SPL. that is one of the most common misnomers in this forum. the G1 is impossible to brick when flashing ROMs. this is why I say the two most important steps are verifying you have a PVT board and the sequence of flashing radio/spl.

It does invalidate your warranty in theory, but if you don't tell them they don't seem to check for it. I got my girlfriend to phone up and put on her best ditzy voice.. they never even asked her about rooting lol.
The main cause of bricking is flashing the 'special' spl without first flashing the new radio rom.. which is well documented all over the place.. ergo, the main cause if bricking is not reading things properly. Don't become a statistic.

Read, read, read. Read then reread. Make sure you understand what you are reading before you try. There are guides here to help you with everything. Just make sure to use the search button before you ask questions.
ok. i hacked a lot of things, but every device is different, soo i do have some experience. I was just curious about the warranty part. but thanks for the advice.

Just don't worry about the warranty, they won't know. Did you ever worry about the warranty on other things you hacked.
im just wondering if anyone has had to pay for their repair after being found out about rooting. also is their any warranty to cover bricks?

There is really no way for T-Mobil (or HTC for that matter) to know that you have rooted your phone. If you bought your phone from T-Mobil, the warranty will cover it as long as you tell them that you didn't do anything to brick your phone. Don't mention rooting, hacking or anything like that. Simply let them walk you through the recovery process and when that fails, they will send you a refurbished phone per the warranty. If you didn't buy your phone from T-Mobil, you can send it to HTC for repair but again, don't mention anything about rooting or hacking. HTC will charge you if you send them your phone and they discover it was only soft bricked (ie bootlooping on the android screen and not the G1 screen). This would be proof positive that you were tinkering around. Bottom line is: never mention rooting, hacking, custom ROMS etc, and make sure you know that your phone is truly bricked BEFORE you send it in. As stated all around this site, there are only a handful of ways to truly brick your G1.
If you want a foolproof way of covering a potential bricked phone, buy the insurance policy from T-Mobil. The deductible to get a new G1 if something happens is usually around $100 but thats cheaper than buying a new phone.
ok thanks does that insurance policy cover bricked phones and do you know if it is available in the uk
If its truly bricked they wont know any of the modifications you made to it except your splash screen (The first thing you see when you turn on the phone) If you don't change that you should be fine. For anything else, you can always flash the DREAIMG.nbh file and it will be returnable
Is there any insurance from htc I can get to cover bricks
You can always take the safer route and not flash any ROM that requires Haykuro's SPL aka DangerSPL if you are not confident on the entire process. Just go with HardSPL and either JesusFreke's or Cyanogen's ROMs. That being said, you can still brick your device if you didn't follow the instructions carefully but at the very least, it is not as risky as using Haykuro's SPL.
And as usual, before you make any modifications, read read and reread all the threads about the particular ROM that you're attempting to flash. Spend a day combing the threads and have a mental image of the steps you'd have to perform before flashing
Ok I'm looking to flash the cyanogen rom with eng spl but I'm wondering what do I do if I brick my phone?

Read this entire thread. You can't fail if you read it all.
definitely check out that thread, and read the How to Flash your First ROM by Dave Shaw I think it is.
I would recommend grabbing the latest HTC stock 6.1 ROM (check the wiki for the links) and then go from there, trying custom ROMs as you see fit.
cheers all

As always the FAQs and stickies are your friend.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL%20Questions%3F
Oh and I really hope you don't actually WANT to brick your phone.
Just because you unlocked and hard spl'd your phone, nothing is going to change if you flash the same old Voda rom back on to it. What rom did you flash ?
shrugs
the one in the recommended guide
all i want to do is get rid of the vodafone crap and start again
to be hones, i don't really understand much of th terminology or exactly what i'm doing. just following instructions. i'm ust a little nervous (and lazy) some of the guides (while great and accurate from what i have tried) assume a lot of knowledge and when i have to start learning stuff like this it confuses me and i tend to not achieve what i wanted.
my phone has developed some odd and irritating behaviour not to mention being slow as hell sometimes
i would quite happily swap this phone for something without a slide keyboard if there is a bit of the board where ican do that
Well......again, what rom and spl do you have currently on the phone ?
A good thing to do for someone scared ****less .. sit back, don't touch the phone, and go through reading the FAQ as posted by others. Especially flashing for noobs by mskip.
Then look up on the Kaiser Wiki on this XDA site (google Kaiser Wiki). Read through and understand what Hard SPL is, what it means to unlock your phone, and why it's important.
Combine those knowledge, you're ready to flash. Otherwise, go and pay a visit to nearest shop that offers flashing service. Pay them, and if it doesn't work, sue them. Here at XDA we can help, but you need to pickup something before we can do much help.
i have windows mobile 6.1 on here at the moment.
i'm running windows mobile version 6.1
I have joined the XDA community a while back and I learned a lot about my windows mobile device, seen lots of great apps and fixes but the best of this forum is how people work together for making each others' lives easier.
I have one huge favor to ask: I recently switched to android and tried to root it and I bricked it. I found a service that will fix it for 60$ and I need someone to help me next time I try to root it, just make sure that I do everything right through yahoo/msn whatever. My phone will be back in 3-4 days and if anyone is willing to help me, Thanks in advance

I can probable help, do you have google chat?
yeah, peoples here are good. it's not very easy to brick your phone here. Just make sure if you want to flash the Danger SPL aka Haykuro's SPL aka Death SPL whatever you want to call it. That you upgrade your radio first.
Also just to throw it in, you wont have to flash that SPL if you just use Firerats MTD partitions bootloader for the big roms you may want to flash.
Thanks
I have Yahoo and MSN but I can get google talk if you can tell me a few things about the rooting process
Just bought a Tmo HD7 today and need some help on what to do with it. It seems that if I go and update the phone that if I ever want to throw a custom rom I would need to downgrade then upgrade again..sooo I was wondering if I should just update from Msoft or I should put a custom rom on already.
I also need help on a Tut if I do a custom rom because it is a little weird on the wording or I cant seem to understand. I also cant find the sticky for noobs to put a custom rom.
Thanks again guys.
I checked my bootloader and its a 1.xx .
I have been reading lots of comments and lots of people say that if you have an HD2 then you should stick with that.
I was wondering if I should take the phone back since it seems to be very closed sourced compared to the old Win-Mo phones.
there is a tutorial on how to do all that stickied on this thread. link is in my signature.
Thanks for some reason I couldnt find that one but it is really laid out thank you.
One more question: Is the phone worth it? I mean is the community going to have a long life or is it going to have a short one since it is so closed. I would like to keep the phone since it looks nice but if I cant really do anything with it I'll just stick with my HD2.
