Cell Standby Disabled - Dell Streak 7

So, I finally was able to disable "cell standby" by the following procedure (for reference see the following in the Acer Iconia 500 forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063123&highlight=cell+standby )
Using "Bloat Freezer" freeze phone.apk (the instant this is done, it will force close - just hold the power button until it shuts off ) - this will only happen once. Then using "Bloat Freezer" freeze telephony.providers.apk - this doesn't force close. Reboot once more and viola! no more cell standby.
Settings>About>Battery Use only shows "Tablet Idle". Of course, whether this has any effect on battery life is anybody's guess but over on the Iconia forum it's claimed that this does improve battery life. YMMV

Cell Standby - Notification!
Further to the above post, I just noticed in the notification area at the top a new icon - it's 4 bars with an x over the lowest bar. It's like when you turn a cellphone on airplane mode - same type of icon.
Also, I had airplane mode enabled (I always have that) and now the little airplane no longer shows up - I guess it's been replaced by the "bars with x" icon. WiFi still works as well as it did before.
To me, this indicates that mobile data is off but maybe someone more knowledgable can give a better explanation.

If I understand correctly, this is for ALL mobile data, right? I'm wondering if the Android software is looking for mobile data AND cell phone service, and if that's robbing battery life since these are data only. Is that the case, or is cell standby simply 3G/4G/edge?

[Q] Why does my Battery get sucked so much?

Hi there. Ive had my Nexus One for nearly a month. I barely use it but ive noticed that the battery goes down EXTREMELY fast. Looking at it right now, it says it has been unplugged for 13 hours, 11minutes, 54 seconds with 28% of battery left. Earlier today I was at 4 hours something with 48% left.
It says Cell Standby is using 35%, Phone Idle using 33%. Thats 68% of my battery and all my phone really does it sit on the desk next to me.
Why is it like this? Also, how can i make it last longer?
Thanks for all the help
Sounds like you are in a spotty coverage area. That explains why the Cell Standby is using so much battery trying to hang on to the 3G connection.
How many bars do you have? and which N1 model is it? TMO or AT&T?
Also do you use wifi?
Hi there Thanks for the reply . I actually turned my 3G off, and now just running on a 2G conection. I thought maybe it was trying to connect to 3G heaps and that was chomping through my battery. With my 2g connection right now I have full connection. Im pretty sure with 3G I was the same, maybe 1 or 2 less.
I do use Wifi, however I turned that off. Also, I live in New Zealand not America so I dont have AT&T - Not sure what TMO is.
He's referring to the version of the Nexus that you have. AT&T or T-mobile, and is a reference to the frequencies that are used, not the actual company,
Ahh ok Thanks. 900/2100 UMTS
I think you are confused about those numbers, those numbers are the amount of battery each item takes up. So Your cell standby takes up 38% of each instant your battery is running. It did not take 38% of your battery. Wifi is significatly better on battery then 2g or 3g, i would advise always use wifi when you can.
Are you using exchange push? 2.2 has a bug that if you are not rooted on a new rom can create this rapid battery drain on exchange.
I recommend getting os monitor and seeing what is taking up the load.

This sounds really similar to what was happening to me the first week with my N1. Cell Stand by was my biggest battery killer. A few posts above has it correct.
Ironically, by turning off wifi in an attempt to save battery I caused my phone to use the cell antenna which uses more power, and takes longer to complete each task. I now leave wifi on whenever I am near my routers, and even most of the time when I am not.
Turning off live wallpapers and disabling auto updates on social networking apps can also be a big help.
Run a few 24 hour tests changing some of those factors, but generally, think about wifi as a battery saver and you should get a bit better results. Your not using exchange right?
Yep. Wifi should be a priority over network connection. Make sure you also change the wifi sleep policy to "never" (settings > wireless & networks > wifi settings > hit menu button > advanced > wifi sleep policy > never).
Also I would double check the APN settings to make sure you are using the best/latest settings for your carrier. (settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > access point names) Make sure the one selected matches the recommended settings for your carrier (you need to call your carrier or google the settings).
Other than that, maybe a reboot would help? pull and reinsert battery?
Hope that helps.
Ok Thanks for all the replies. I dont have any push notifications set to automatically update and I dont use any social networking apps. Ill turn Wi-Fi on now and even though I set it to "never" sleep - it still does when I lock the screen...but thats another problem .
Im not using any exchange push, not even sure what that is.
Cheers
Yes keep WiFi on will save you an enormous amount of battery, no question. The difference is huge for me. And your WiFi sleep policy should be set to never. If you have the bug where this setting does not work, then that stinks and you could install the new driver that fixes it. But for now you would need to be rooted until the fix is official.
I have now enabled Wi-Fi and put 3G back on. However my battery is still draining fast. It now says my Wi-Fi is using up 30+% of my battery. Im losing about 8-10% of battery every hour - Im pretty sure that isnt normal?
The other place to check is: settings->applications->running services.
See if there is something in there that you don't think should be running. Your display should be using the most battery, so it sounds like something is running automatically.

i have a similar problem with my battery i see that your on fido network like me whats the apn setting your using?
@adambenjamin: Thanks had a look. Everything that is running I want running, nothing that shouldnt be there.
@d.brown: Whats a fido network? I live in New Zealand, your flag is showing Canada - so we arent on the same network?
@everyone: So just a little update/recap. Basically my battery gets drained quite fast. Basically all my phone does is sit on the table next to me. I might send 5 or less texts a day, thats it - That will be all I do with my phone. I DONT have any push updates, no social networking. I have my brightness down to the lowest it can go.
I am on 3G, have set Wi-Fi to "never" sleep (However it does anyway).
Right now my phone has been unplugged from being charged for 8hours 24 minutes with only 45% of the battery left - I have sent two texts today and thats the ONLY time I have used my phone. My display is using 31%, Cell Standby 27% and phone idle 24% = 82%
Something I have changed recently is going from one network to another. The network I was one of the two biggest in my country (Which means it has alot of towers). I changed to another network which has been going for just over a year (Less towers). Could my battery be running down faster than normal because its harder to find a signal than before?
Also, my signal strength is -107dBm 4 asu (Absoloutley no idea what that means, but might be valuable to somebody out there who can help)
Thanks for all the help
Switch to GSM Auto (PRL) instead of WCDMA Auto. this helped battery life immensely for me. i can get to around 20 hours of moderate use usually
edit: to do this, you'll have to make a shortcut to the "phone info" activity using anycut or bettercut or another shortcut app.
once in "Phone Info", there's a drop down where you can select gsm auto (prl)
Dunno if it was mentioned, get OSMonitor (free from market) and see if Email.apk is stuck at full cpu load. It's been a problem since 2.1, it does that sometimes. If it's at more than 10%, kill it and re-launch it.
Hmm well strangley my Battery seems to be alot better now. Been on for 1day, 15hours, 23minutes and its on 73% remaining. Before it would last like 15 at most and be out. All I did was Turn W-Fi back on. Thanks everybody for there help
Been having the same issues as you, it's kinda getting annoying now.
I'm pretty much the same as you. I'll send a couple of texts a day or so, then put the phone to sleep and leave it for a couple of hours etc. No continuous usage.
From say, 8am till 9pm, I'm left with under 20% left, after EXTREMELY light usage. Sending a couple of texts and turning the screen on to check the time a few times shouldn't even be considered usage at all!
I'm just a bit envious of others who claim 2-3 days with light net browsing, a few texts etc. Thats more than me, yet they use less power.
On top of that, I'm running CM6 which includes an undervolted kernel a.k.a less power usage....ummm?
I've tried everything!
1) I've underclocked to max 384mhz when the screen is off (960 max when screen is on)
2) Wifi is usually left on
3) Data is usually turned off
4) No rogue apps detected
^
At the end of each day I check "Spare Parts" in my battery history to try and find an app that is using an abnormal amount of battery...Everythings fine.
5) Under "running services" all there is are my widget services (none data-related. eg Set Cpu widget, battery widget, Fancy Widget)
6) The screen is on auto brightness
7) Sync is off
8) GSM Auto is set instead of WCDMA preferred.
Everything!
I'm pretty much limiting the use of the phone just to make it through the day on standby.
And please, don't accuse me of someone complaining about their 12 hours, 32 minutes of "light usage" (6 hours web browsing, sync turned on, 4 hours of Angry Birds, constant calling/emailing)
I used to be able to leave my phone overnight for 8-9 hours and only have the battery go down 5-6 percent. Now its triple or more. And frustrating.
I really can't think of anything else.
From my experience, when I was running CM6 RC1, I was getting about 2 day's battery life with pershoots (pre-720p) 2.35 uv oc kernal. After upgrading to RC2, I no longer got good battery life, and I tried everything I know of with little luck.
I decided to try a new ROM and kernel. Now I am using Geo's frf91 stock deodexed blackbar v6.1 with the Stock kernel. This is now my favorite ROM/kernel combination. Try that one out and see how you run at stock levels, then maybe flash a new kernel if you want. Pershot, and Wildmonk are the local favorites, but I found them to leave me with sporadic overheating/ touch screen or reboot to X screen glitches. I would try a few days away from CM, to at least isolate some variables.
What version of CM6 are you running?

Is there a background data killer for android?

hi all, as you probably know, cell standby (data background while phone is standby) takes ALOTTTT of battery so i want to know if there is an app to auto kill data network when i power off the phone (to avoid cell standby) and power on again auto when power on the phone from standby
juicedefender
You mean Juicedefender and such (if I remember correctly, there is at least 1 more app that does the same thing), and IMO - it completely defeats the whole purpose of modern mobile OS. If I didn't want to be connected to the network wherever I go, I wouldn't be buying a smartphone.
The battery lasts a day easily, with or without data.

if you want to completely disable data, the app youre looking for IS juicedefender - the free version disables data completely and re-enables it every 15 minutes to get any notifications.
I would also suggest trying:

which switches 3g to edge (and uses less battery) after a specified amount of time in standby

[Q] Working for better battery life

Hi all,
I've been working on getting my XT862 to give me more life on the battery. I've rooted and debloated using psousa's stuff, but I'm still not where I'd like to be. I've noticed a few interesting things:
AOS is showing as the top user in the battery monitor. Currently it's at 32% with my display and WiFi bringing up the rear.
Even though I've run the debloat script as root and confirmed the rename of skype.bourbon and motoprint, these things still start up. How is this possible?
BetterBatteryStats shows that the suspend process is my main battery user. How does one fix that?
Any advice on what to look for?
best route is to install a custom ROM and try different ones out for battery life. I would suggest Maverick ROM also make sure you wipe battery stats after installing a new ROM and fully cycle your battery.

I'm guessing suspend is another way of saying System Idle.. if you wanted to get rid of that, make a nandroid backup of your system (via bootstrap or safestrap) and experiment what system apps/services you can freeze (via Titanium Backup) without getting force closes on the stuff that you use. I have about 30-60 system apps/services frozen depending on the ROM that I run. I have no force close issues, and my system idle uses about 1 percent of the battery per hour.
Additionaly, if you are using the CDMA network, force CDMA mode, likewise from GSM/UMTS, if you are using it, force it, do not use Global, as it will have both radios running and searching for service.
Disable the use of wifi when you aren't using it (there is an option to auto turn it off when the screen turns off, however this may cause worse battery life if you are using data as it will try use your mobile network, requiring more power), if you wish to leave it on, increase the scan time interval (i made mine 10 mins, up from the stock 45 seconds)
Auto brightness (it isn't really that bad...)
And get the app called juice defender. Once you set it up it controls all of your wireless stuff. Like turning wifi and 3g off when you turn your screen off, etc.

If you use Wifi often, it is a good idea to check your Wifi Sleep Policy. To do this, navigate to:
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi Settings > Advanced Settings (hit menu to access this) > Wifi Sleep Policy
I have mine set to 'Never'. By default, it was set to turn off the wifi when the screen went off, so any background apps that run and use data default back to the mobile connection. When you turn the phone back on, it turns the Wifi back on from sleep mode. By changing the sleep policy to 'never' you prevent this disconnect/reconnect to Wifi cycle.
This helped my battery life when connected to Wifi. Let me know if it works for you.
Thanks to all
Thank you for your replies everyone. I'll have to get TB and start freezing stuff. What confuses me though is how a service like Verizon Apps or Skype Mobile gets started even though it was renamed ".bak" by psousa's script. Also, I've noticed that when I run the restore bloat software, I don't get back all the apps in my app drawer. I'm not sure why that is.
Is it possible something got screwed up if I ran the debloat script twice? I see that it does a bunch of mv proggie.apk proggie.apk.bak type work. If the first file wasn't found, is it possible that it overwrote the .bak with gibberish?
My WiFi sleep policy is never because I have WiFi all day and I like Google Talk a lot. I'd be happy if I could get WiFi/Display as my top users, just AOS seems like a bug.
I'm on UTMS so it's forced to that all the time.
Maybe the answer is to try the mods. Or maybe SBF to the stock and try again?

Battery Dies After 1/2 Day - Help!

Hey Guys -
I've had my AT&T HTC One for 4-5 months now and really like it. By far, the biggest issue is the battery life I get (or don't get.) I run many things on my phone - especially wit Tasker, but based off the stats I've seen the issue is coming from somewhere else. Below is some data from my phone. Please help me determine how to resolve this.
Overview
- AT&T HTC One
- ViperOne 6.2.1 (latest)
- Nova Dashboard
- 25gb of 32gb used /
Average Usage
- 4-5 Calls / day - ~15 texts
- Wi-fi stays on / Bluetooth on only when in car (controlled by tasker)
- Stream bluetooth audio (from local file on phone) when in car but also plugged in & getting 2.4 amps during this time
- ~15 Tasker profiles (2 are location based and use High accuracy)
Misc Notes
- Google Services is usually the top one by a good amount followed by Tasker. The problem is that I can't drill down in Google Services to see which service it is.
- I have the screen set to timeout after 10 seconds. Sometimes this doesn't work, though. Ideas for how to fix?
- I noticed today that in the Power menu, "Cell Usage" (Battery used by cell radio) was at 18%. Time on was 4h 43m and time without signal was 59%! Just started a new job and saw that I get hardly any signal when holding phone so believe it. Have any ideas about this besides turning it off when at work? I still need to be able to receive calls.
If there are any logs or whatever else you know that I may pull, I'll be happy to do so. I'm open to any suggestions you have. Thanks!
I get about the same life in my battery. I would set a profile to drop it to 2g while at work. This may help

i guess full of tweaks enabled and full apps running and enabled - than its normal hat the battery runs out after a half day.
Try Juice defender maybe
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latedroid.juicedefender
Edit: in some cases it works to preserve battery by reconfiguring radio signals.
Also greenify is a must to hibernate those pesky apps that don't want to stop running. That can give improvement to your battery life too.

Time without signal is killing the battery due to radio scanning for network. If there's no signal you're not going to receive calls, so put it in airplane mode.
Next is Tasker and location based profiles, that's what's causing the Google Play Services drain due to high power GPS location. Also, Tasker is keeping the device awake.
Ditch Tasker, leave WiFi on all the time (it uses almost no power when disconnected) and use it at work instead of mobile data, get Lean Data instead for controlling data, and switch to airplane mode if there's no signal.
Thanks Guys!

Mobile Radio Active being the main reason of discharge

Hello, I bought my Oneplus 3T recently and I'm using stick ROMwith ElementalX. The main problem I found is that everytime I look at what consumed the highest percentage of my battery are things like WA, Google Play Services, etc. If I click on the to see what is happening, I always get the Mobile Radio Active working like pretty much all the time.
For example, in a normal use for me which is between 26-30 hours until I decide to charge my phone(between 10-20%), I get a SoT of 4 hours and a half more or less. The problem is that from the total percentage of battery used, these applications which have the Mobile Radio Active problem drain between 10-15% of the total amount of battery, while my screen is like 7% of that total value.
Researching on XDA, I couldn't get any solution to this problem. I call this a problem because, every day I see new photos from people with between 7-9 h of SoT in maybe 20 hours of use. Of course, you can't really call this a bad performance of my phone but I think that this difference of hours with screen on is greater than the amount of time my phone stays with my screen off.
As a consequence, I wanted to know if there is a solution or some tips to reduce that Mobile Radio Active bug in order to extend the time between charges.
Thnk you very much.
Additional information: I cleaned flash stock today + ElementalX kernel + SuperSu to see if this kind of bug dissappears.
To "solve" the Mobile Radio Active bug you must take some extreme steps:
First, Root your device. This MUST be SuperSu unfortunately, as the app I'm going to suggest doesn't allow you to toggle the required settings with Magisk or Phh.
Install LeanDroid.
In settings, allow disabling of Wifi, Cellular Data, Bluetooth, Network Location and GPS Location.
Set to "0 min" after screen off. Click "Except".
Configure this screen to your taste, but I have "Except if tethering", "Except if charging (AC). Under Wifi I have "Except if connected to <my home WIFI>" and I have "Except if active: Limit" set to 100KB/s.
Bluetooth "Except if connected"
Location "Except if GPS in use"
and "Network Mode except if original strength OK."
Go back to the main panel.
Restore "After Screen Unlocked"
"Every 60 MIN after screen off" (Configure this to your liking)
With SuperSU and the above, turning the phone screen off disables the data modem when the transfer rate is low, this effectively shuts down the radio and prevents the Mobile Radio Active bug.
Run this with tools like Greenify and ForceDoze to really pump your battery life.
It's not unusual for me to see 8 hour screen on time with these apps and the above configuration.
and without root?
Just curious, how is the status of this bug ? I followed that Bug for like 1.5Years...since Lollipop i think. I myself tryed several things in Sultans ROMs in a OnePlusOne, but no Solution so far ;-(
Bug is still active. As far as I can tell, it remains active in Oero too.
The only option if you are not rooted is to close all apps and toggle airplane mode before you switch the screen off. This only solves the issue until the next time data is accessed by any app, though
THX for reply. Jepp on Wifi i get 4-5days @3-4h SOT. On Mobile only 2 days

Obviously, it takes more power to send/receive signals to a cell tower 10 miles away, versus a WiFi router that is 20 feet away.
Also using WiFi doesn't ensure the modem is Switched off. Modem power doesn't mean data.

This this bugs even remain active in Oreo i will never use android again.
It's existed since Lollipop and I doubt Google will fix it any time soon.
To get 7 hours of on screen time, you will of course have to sacrifice something, the laws of physics are always with us, reminding us from day to day things that can and can't be done. But hey, if you live in a cardboard box next to a cell tower should give you much better battery time without sacrificing the phone-part of your smart device. ? ?
