As far as I know, this bug is related to gingerbread and not by samsung, somehow it is triggered randomly (some say google maps, others say wifi or games) and the root cause is unknown, that's why some people haven't experience it, a quick temp solution is to restart the device but this is just terrible solution..if you are affected pls help spread the word so the issue becomes a high priority in google, the issue is already raised here since Feb 2011 and a lot of people have already experienced it (I myself experienced it although im using SGS1):
http: / / code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15057
but it is still under medium priority, unbelievable! do you remember the SMS bug? google got pressured when it was spread in forums and news site..I think we can do the same here..let's raid android forums and android news site
here's the thread detailing the bug:

sorry please remove the spaces in the link..im not yet allowed to post external links since i have below 8 posts
I'am affected. Currently running Darky 10.1.
I'm still not sure how much google can do about it. Some google eployee stated that faulty drivers are responsible.
Two apps have already been identified to be responsible (Samsung Account and Samsung Update).
I installed Android Booster to identify the actual drain.
I recently had a drain and Android Booster identified "BluetoothTest" as the cause (I now freezed it).

I have read lots of posts relating to call-drop, battery problems, and overheating at Android Forum in Korea. (GalaxyS is originally manufactured by a Korean Company, Samsung).
But I do not see many threads regards these matters. Does anyone experience this kind of problem yet?
1. Battery drain - if I charge it fully, it cannot go last one day so I need to re-charge it before coming home. I think this might be a problem of the current firmware and expect to be solved in froyo stage.
2. overheating - this one is the problem i am currenty experiencing.
regularly, my captivate is 25~30 degree' but when i use a small app, then firsly it turns to be a warm stage and sometimes it is over 105~110 f'. I did not have this problem before, but i think this is a problem of lag-fix. (because the official forum in Korea said that lag-fix occurs overheating problem in M110s so i think it might be the same thing to captivate)
3. call-drop
i think this is a problem of the sensor loacting left-top. since it is too sensitive or not too sensitive, sometimes the captivate assumes the call is already ended even i am still on the phone. OR it does not have an auto-lock feature, so I push the end button unexpectly.
Does anyone experience this?
OR
MY PHONE IS DEFECTIVE?????????
I am kinda so tired to find solutions of these problems every day. I used to use Iphone 3G, and 3GS but I did not feel so stressful like the situation.
If it is a problem from the lagfix, then How can I reset this thing to the factory default one??
(just one click JF6 thing? or change something entirely?)
I know this bug is common on jb devices, but I didn't have it until one week or so. I tried formating my SD, etc, but it sometimes appear sometimes not. There is any fix for this that can be applied on our phone? Anybody had encountered this problem?
PS:I posted this on DEV section because I think is very important and urgent.
PS2:In the screenshots the applications didn't drain my battery, I made them just to show you what apps I'm talking about.

rescan media root from google play solved the problem for me
After Installing Custom Mods and rooting on Oxygen OS I was experiencing a Android System battery Drain .
Also in custom Roms based On OOS I also had the same problem.
I was draining 35-40 percentage of my battery in a charge cycle.
I searched alot past 2-3 days on my phone to see which process is causing this Drain problem.
I found many but stoping them didn't fix it .
Finally today when I found that after SuperSU was installed
It was causing the Drain so I found a fix for this
Fix for all Roms having this problem
-Go to SuperSU app
-Settings menu
-Enable trust system User
-and enable grant permission during boot
-Then put the phone on flight mode and wait for it to cool down.
If this doesn't work
-Try setting default access to grant
-Enable MultiUser access
Hit the thanks button if this helps
Also tell me if this helps in the comments
Remember to follow all steps

Doesn't work still battery drain and phone always warm

@Nishidh
Thanks for sharing but both solutions are security risk. Maybe Magisk is solution till SuperSu is fixed (hoping that it IS the culprit).

Try to delete all of the mkv files. That helps for me. No battery drain at all
i would say "kindda" help. cause still android system drains. but, a bit less then before. i would like to see some more days.
I switched to Magisk and drain is still there so reason is something else seemingly. It has something to do with FW/Modem. We all need to deluge OnePlus with requests to fix this mess.
Helps me
My current battery cycle
For me clearing the Google Play Services database solved the battery drain.
Apps,
Google play services
Storage
Manage Space
Clear all data
I then remained on that screen and restarted the phone into recovery without returning to the launcher.
In recovery clear cache only.
Reboot
Since then I have had no problems at all (though I am running complete stock no root)
No data is lost but you will have to add cards to android pay and set a couple of other items when prompted (like default backup account etc).

I mean no disrespect to the OP when posting this..
Isn't setting default root access to "grant" a crazy big security risk? Potentially malicious apps could reboot recovery in the middle of the night, flash some REAL spyware and feed back all your passwords without you knowing and could compromise your online accounts, still have to be installed first or some exploit would have to be found, but it just seems the risks outweigh the benefits.
Are you sure it's not another app you've consistently installed? F2fs? Clean installs + factory resets? Checked your signal strength lately? Wi-Fi + Bluetooth scanning? Facebook/whatsapp/etc installed? Google location history? Different versions of twrp? Titanium backups? Uncheck the the option in android settings to Backup and restore android apps? Installed several versions of older supersu?[ R4, r3, r2, r1, r2d2?]Franco kernel? [HIGHLY RECOMMEND. All the other kernels I've tried leave my device pretty warm, but franco keeps it cool), or Anoint your phone with luxurious oils, passionately bathe it and whisper sweet things into its microphone? [References here->
]
I just wanted to make my thoughts known, some newer users to root might come by, try and follow these steps hoping for SOT gains, and needlessly compromise their phone in the process.
If you persist in believing cf supersu is the root cause (that's a knee slapper!!) I think trying another supersu might be a better way to go than ticking all those options. Say like, phh's or CWM.
Again, I mean no disrespect to the OP. Just my thoughts.
Forget about SuperSU, You guys have no idea what causes the andriod OS drain after flashing.... So stop blaming kernel, SuperSU, gplay services etc.. The answer is out there in forums.. Feel free to browse and search for it...

I saw you also sprayed ppl with their own bs on Blu spark thread. All i can say is I roam those forums a lot myself but haven't come across a clear stating about these issues (apart from the SELinux shenanigans). So what about you flood us with your great wisdom instead big boy?

Here you go:
Apparently you claim that you roam this forums and yet you didn't find the answer. Interesting claims.
Anyways here is your answer since even you didmt even fi d answer after roaming..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811&page=5
Read it carefully though.. Explains why andriod OS drain battery more in first days (Not cycles) after flashing rom.. More apps, more the drain..
Tl;Dr for lazy people out there... Andriod os drain is present because Google itself has changed how andriod works..
On side note, I don't spread bs.. I just put my observations. It is upto people to fix it and accept the truth or get emo over it..

I read this post from Rovo long ago, and I of course was taking about abnormal drains they were occurring long after reinstalls or new ROM flashes. It's well known, the rebuilding of caches etc.. Anyone complaining before this incompressible period should be treated like you do. Also, still thanx for minding sharing something at least and on a SECOND side note, read again, I never said you spread bs, pretty much the other way around, i was just suggesting you enlighten us instead of "spraying people with their own bs" like for example, on the Blu spark thread where I know you were putting whiners back in place. Cheers.
I am using magisk, so what about me?
Hey all,
I hope someone can help as I've searched this issue here and on Reddit and found various answers to the problem but no solutions. My brother has a Pixel 5 and the "media storage app" hogged around 50 gb of storage (same issue as Oneplus, however Oneplus solved it with an update) and filled the device. In my searches I found 3 answers; it's the media on the phone just displayed incorrectly, it is a wrong reading from the phone, or it is duplicated media which doubles the used storage (makes more sense as you'll see below).
Another Issue was Android System taking only 2 gb of space when normally it should be around 11-12 (as on my Pixel 2 and Pixel 4a), but this was solved with a wipe.
Due to various software issues with the phone I convinced him to do a complete wipe and reflashing of the stock firmware through Android flash tool. Also knowing Whatsapp caused weird issues in the past (with his Pixel 1) I also made him delete all previous backups from the phone and Google drive and clean his media (deleted only a few hundred mb) then back up again. The backup was 27 gb (not around 50 as media storage showed).
We did the wipe and flashing and everything worked well. But when we started restoring the data again and Whatsapp started restoring media then the Media Storage app started growing again, I am yet to determine if it is duplicating or not, but I am 100% convinced that there is something wrong because I checked my Pixel 2 with Android 11 and my Pixel 4a with Android 12 beta and in both cases this app barely takes a few mb of storage, all the other "media" is properly organized as it should be in it's respective category, on his phone though its all in "other".
I am really out of solutions other than wiping Whatsapp completely clean without media, only backing up chats, but this doesn't guarantee that all the media won't duplicate or fill up in Media storage again. At this point I'm thinking of waiting until Android 12 official but it also doesn't guarantee anything since it's not clear where the issue is coming from exactly.
Jeeeesze... Deep Six WhatsApp asap.
The trouble it's causing is the least of it's damage potential. No social media app should ever be allowed to run as an app on the phone, period!!!
WhatsApp itself is a high risk liability just like FB, Twitter etc. A proven destroyer of worlds.
You aren't the customer, you're are the product.
Censored and molded by someone else's twisted vision, and end game.
For a few dollars more... power/money is their only motivation. Mining and weaponing your data Inc.

I totally understand the risks of using whatsapp but we can't just stop using it when everyone else is. Also I'm not 100% sure it's ONLY whatsapp causing this, there might be other apps as well.

Hi,
I'm having the same issue on my Pixel 5 on Android 12. Tried downgrading to 11, factory resetting, etc.
The media storage process keeps increasing while I add files to the memory - let's say that I create a 4GB video, the media storage process is going to be almost as big in the apps section. It decreases equally when I delete something.
As a consequence the space occupied is nearly doubled (media + apps).
It seems to happen especially with media files such as pictures, audio and video files.
I reported the issue in the android 12 beta program feedback. However it sounds like it's not an urgent matter since it's been there for many releases and it is not clear how many people are affected.
I hoped that the last beta release - which is supposedly a mature one - would correct this bug and nope.
You can check out this article from Android central for a similar subject named "I couldn't stop this Android bug from eating up all of my phone's storage" Link here
I regret that I'm not bringing a solution yet.

Hey, the last beta update, march 22 solved the issue. I had submitted the bug in August 21 and the ticket status turned to "fixed" in February.
A bit long but I guess issues are sorted by priority. Still really happy with the outcome.
Maybe you can spread the word on threads you've checked out so people can try the last beta release or wait for the next stable one.
That's great to know we can rely on such a support from the beta team, props to them !

Hi, I'm presently having this Media Storage expansion issue with Op 9RT. Just to be clear, as you said, the Media Storage issue is now solved in your Pixel 5, right? Asking it now because if Google can solve it, then there is a feint chance that someday OnePlus will also solve it!!!

Hello, yes I confirm that the media storage problem has been solved for the Pixel 5 in the latest version, here is an article written about it after I contacted android central in April.
This pesky Android storage bug was finally fixed and we almost didn't know
"Ghost storage" that can't be freed up will no longer haunt users.

Hopefully it will be resolved for your OnePlus very soon.
Cheers

Nice!!! Pixel isn't officially sold in our country as yet, the few we have are actually unlocked devices from US and they are so damn expensive! So, I'm stuck with my 9RT for now....... Hopefully, OP resolves this, may be with Android 13!

You might be able to find one that's reasonably priced on Swappa. It's affiliated with XDA and is a reputable site. It's mostly peer to peer sales.

Thanks!!! Will look it up! But anything that comes from outside my country is a strict No for me as our Customs is notorious and they will tax me almost the same price of the handset if I import it!!!
Just updated my s21ultra last week. Android 13
Since updating im having the following issue.
Usually if ive just taken a photo or downloaded a image online. When in the process of sending it to a contact in whatsapp 'pressing the camera symbol in a chat' ..the image ive just downloaded use to appear first.
For some reason this is no longer the case...how can this be resolved???
Check permissions. Try clearing the cache or data. Clear system cache on the boot menu.
It might be on WhatsApp end, not up to speed.
It's never a good idea to load any social media apps on the device. Access them through browser login only. WhatsApp, FB, Tiktok are some of the worst. Invasive at best, outright malware at worst.
Always a ongoing security risk.
Thanks this resolved the issue..
I also have another issue..
Android auto - when plugging into my ford via usb, its stating usb not responding/detected on my ford screen. It was working fine prior to updating.
Some sort of setting blocking me out?

What resolved it?
No idea but again it's likely a setting or another needed future update. Trust me there'll be more.
Was it worth all this trouble? Although 12 is no gem either.
This one reason I run N10+'s and don't go higher than Android 10; both Samsung and Google been putting out subpar products now for at least 3 design cycles. Google continues to use scare tactics about security to the point where they are crippling the devices and usability. I see no end to this hype rather than performance driven marketing from both these corporations.

Afraid not. I never used that app. If it really irritates you and you can't work it out, you can probably roll it back to 12. Try some Google searches include older OS versions and models too. Many issues go back years. Start pouring over the new OS settings; you'll need to anyway.
It helps to have a backup phone.
I got a twin mostly for if this one is down for repairs but also because I committed to using the N10+for another 2-3+ years. I can't depend on either Samsung or Google to be reliable with their product releases anymore so I took control. No more bs.
