[Q] Questions about Froyo 2.2 & root - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just updated to 2.2 using Samsung Kies Mini, I'm not use to all this Android "stuff' just came from using an iPhone for quite some time and it was very simple. As to my understand "Android" is easy to get use to too, just takes some getting use to, so im switching phones.
So, as to my question about 2.2 Is there anyway to root the official release of 2.2? Also I dont have my SD card for a couple days judging my mom accidentally grabbed it before she left. So can I root it without using a SD card?
I want to get rid of these stupid AT&T bloatware shiznit.
Also should I use a lagfix? I read somewhere someone said they just used Titanium Backup and I think made it so the program "freeze/froze" the applications from running? Any Ideas?

Did you even glance at any thread on here? Every single one of your questions has been answered about 100 times. All the info is there look in the stickies at the top of every sub forum, expecting a personalized walk through isn't the right way to go about things. Read, read, read, read, read, and read some more.

Sorry I was going to "edit" earlier but got busy cleaning and I didn't have time, my bad. I did read around and I did find how to root my phone and remove the AT&T bloatware.
I did a little research around here but I had a quick question actually about my device.
It runs super HOT, except for when its charging... Even when im on my phone like texting and then I open task manager to close all open programs after it closes them it still is SUPER HOT.
Guess I forgot to mention, I dont use a case but ive only dropped my phone once, but the one time I did drop it i cracked the screen on the bottom right side about a qtr size crack, it isnt like feel able so my finger just glides right over it still without noticing.

wow, where to begin?

Well, I ditched my iphone to try out the nexus one... I just got the phone today and I barely know how to use it stock (2.1). Phone is untouched, brand new from google...
I guess I would like to take advantage of the phones power and more importantly, try out version 2.2.... any advice where to begin, tutorials etc? thx in advance, I will go back to reading this site!
First, get to know your phone. Use it as long as you can before rooting, until you get used to it and EVERYTHING it does. When it starts to get boring, ROOT it! By that time you should know every secret the phone offers!
not a big fan of patience... I would like to learn to root it and play around... but nothing brick like...
2.2 would be nice and anything else people recommend, lol....
thx man, goodnight.

Inside there's a link, follow the Pre-requisites on that link first... and setup ADB first.
ok so set up that ab thing first then follow the tutorials... also, should I have mentioned it is a *rogers 3g phone (att&t)
thx again and goodnight 4 real
If you barely know how to use it stock.... you should probably figure that out before you go around rooting it, flashing custom ROMs, and trying the latest BETA OS release. Once you've got the stock OS figured out and are getting bored with it, THEN root and move on.
Learn how the phone works. This is no iPhone and the settings with this phone are plentyfull. Have in mind that after you flash a Cyanogen ROM for instance, you will have 4 times more settings to play with, hence the advice to learn the basic functions on your N1. But anyways, you will come to a certain point where the GEEK in you wakes up and you wanting MORE..
DO also know that when you want to root your phone, you need to unlock you phone. Doing this will VOID YOUR WARRANTY. I will also advise you to use your phone for a period of time to see that there are no issues with hardware and build of the phone (buttons, dust under screen, trackball not working, not chargin, loose connectors etc etc..), just to be safe. Coz once you unlock it, there is NO going back to lock it again (at this point)
Setting up ADB and Recovery can be the most struggling with drivers and interface but once that is passed and you start using recovery on a daily or weekly basis, is all smooth ride from there. I guarantee you many hours customizing and experimenting with this phone than any other non-andoid phones you have had in the past.. is pretty much an addiction. i have rebooted this phone more the last 3 months than any other phones in my whole lifetime .
Rule of thumb is always have a recent Nandroid (backup done in recovery) before flashing. Flashing ROM's are usually safe as safe can be. Kernels are not risky to flash either, but remember that Kernels are the ones that controls voltages and speed of you Processor and other things, and flashing wrong Kernels can result in non functioning behavious in your OS and worst case, the processor overheating, so know what you are doing when flashing Kernels. At one point you will start trying out kernels because if you are on a hunt for more battery life, the ROM + Kernel combination are the main things that makes this happens.
Then , a last note: I addvise you to NOT update radios if you don't have any problems with the one you have. The Radio's are the one that controls your ability to call controls your phone's antenna and Wi-Fi. If you DO flash radios and happen to terminate the process, i guarantee you a bricked phone. So beware. If you upgrade to FROYO, one of the processes is flashing a new radio. So let things runs it course once in process.
Have fun trying to optimize your phone to last as long as it can on one battery charge...

pretty valid points from all of you, thanks very much.... I think I will give it a week or atleast the weekend... once I got in on luck.... maybe I will move on
I do buy and sell phones a lot... might be best to wait and see if there is a way to reverse the process and keep warranty intact first?
thx a bunch.
since the OTA Froyo should be coming in by maybe end of next week, i'd wait and just mess with 2.1 for now

It should definitely be soon, and will give you a chance to have new software and features without voiding your warranty. Win-win :-D

I really recommand to do that exact thing:
learn nandroid (backups )
then play with your 2.1
2.2 will be out before you could have learned everything you wanted from 2.1
thx again, I am pretty excited about 2.2... coming from a 3gs... I kind of thought I would not like my n1.. but I see no problems with 2.1.... I cannot imagine the performance increase it claims.... gonna be sweeeeet.
So, anything non warranty killing you guys recommend? apps/tweaks etc? thx

You can download Launcher Pro from the Market to replace the current home Launcher. It will allow you to have up to 7 home screens and makes everything a whole lot smoother when you swipe between the screens.
sweeeeet tip bro, thx!
i believe that there exists a non-warranty-voiding method of updating to froyo. it's much faster than 2.1, and battery life is also improved.
for apps, there are threads about it but, some that are just pretty darn neat would include:
google skymap
barcode scanner
google goggles
some augmented reality apps would be:
layar
wikitude
for a better typing (rather swiping) experience, get swype. you should be able to find instructions on how to put it on around here, and there is a non-timed release in the apps/themes section
i use 'and explorer' as a file explorer
pandora is a must if you like internet media
google listen isn't bad (although i hear good things about other apps) for pulling down any podcasts you like
and, go give the navigation app a try. it's the bees knees. not only does it give turn by turn directions, but as long as you load the trip while in a 3g or wifi connection, it caches the whole thing, so you can drive through dead zones and won't lose the the path, as long as you have gps signal. plus, it switches to street view to show you the destination, when you get there

yeah, i updated mine via the non-warranty-voiding method, but since i like some of the apps that require root, i had it rooted
to update to frf50 (Froyo) without voiding warranty, you need to download the OTA file and rename to update.zip and place in the root of the SD card
1. power off phone
2. hold down volume down button and press power
3. scroll to recovery and hit power (should take you to screen with an exclamation mark or something similar
4. while holding down power button, press volume up
5. this should take you to stock recovery and you can now apply update.zip from sd card
those may be the correct steps, i don't think i'm missing anything; there's some guide located in the general forum
thx for the app suggestions, I will try them all
as for the above instructions... each site I try to grab 2.2 from.. says it no longer exists? thx

[Q] "dead" phone

I have a dead phone I'm toying with. It's not on with the network. This is my first attempt at rooting etc. I would like to just have it as a sort of game/fun/toy phone. I have a G1 from Tmobile that I use and not going to try and root until I get a new one, then perhaps also have that as a game/fun/toy phone. Anyway, I have a Sprint Hero and how I've been getting apps and such on it is by swapping SD cards and doing a back up or connect via wi fi from one of the sites with a list of freeware to download. I want to get rid of the apps that I don't want/need for this phone. I'm not going to use it to call people so I would like that off too if I could. I would like to keep the wi fi though. I am new to this and trying to figure everything out. I just got busybox and rom manager on the phone. So, now what? How do I get those annoying stock apps I don't want/need? I really don't need to change the whole face of it, just those apps to be removed and I'll be happy with it. Thanks
by the way
I forgot the build.
I'm on 2.31.651.7
rooted from one click that I found from the unlockr
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hero_CDMA#Miscellaneous_Simple_How-To.27s.
Please search around, most of the common questions, more often than not, have already been answered.
ok thanks. it's just so time consuming to be sitting on the computer trying to search and read through so much. I don't sit on my butt all day staring at a screen. I have a baby and any screen time is when he's sleeping. It's just easier to ask and hope for an answer. I'll look through the links later. Thanks.
I also want it as some type of "toy" for him to play with instead of taking MY phone! lol. I have toddler lock on it and he seems to like it. But I don't really want him to have it until he stops "chewing" on it. My G1 case cover is ruined from him. lol. oh well. He likes to play with phones because everyone else does. They start early now. I downloaded all sort of kid games so when that day comes, I can say, here you go when he takes mine!
But I'm lost on figuring out if there is a program I need? Or if the superoneclick has it in the app. I have it on our Windows computer and I'm currently on our Mac. And that computer is so slow and now I have to spend the time to try and clean IT out. Its running Vista and I have a copy of 7 but I don't feel like dealing with all of that. sigh.
Does tethering work with phone to phone? Like connect my non network phone to my G1 for internet like when we go on vacation and my nonsmart phone partner wants to use the net and so do I, that we can share. I'm guessing USB cable would do that? I don't know, there is just so much to read up on for a newbe trying to figure it out. Time for sleep now.

Well, nobody around here sits around on their butts staring at the screen, waiting for people like you to ask questions... so that they can answer. If you think of this as "Customer Service", think again. Everyone here has primary jobs, they do this because they like it and are passionate about it.
Having said that, nobody is saying "No" to answering questions... just try searching and looking up the obvious links, first.
Geeze. sorry. I just thought Maybe someone else maybe already had done it and point me in the right direction. I try searching and can't find anything in what I'm trying to do. So a here, try this and this and such would be nice. Thought I give a bg on what I wanted to do with it. And I'm still new and get lost around here. Tech langauage changes every 6 months along with the phones. I see "flash" and I think of the Adobe program or the flash on a camera. So forgive me. And I guess nevermind.
I agree with the others here. There is a wealth of tutorials available, and when used will achieve your goal of a "toy". However, I will help you out by providing a framework of things you will need to do. Bear in mind you will need to do the searching though. This way you will learn more about the phone, and you will have a better sense of what to do if something doesn't go right, etc.
First, you need to have your phone rooted. Rooting allows you full access over the phone. Most rooting utilities will install "Busybox", a set of binaries that grants you the ability to use special commands. Next, you will want to install a custom Recovery image. There are two mainstream ones available: Amon-RA and ClockworkMod. Either is fine. The recovery image allows you to make backups of your phone, install new ROMs, and reset settings, among other things. After the recovery image is installed, you will want to search for a list of "safe to delete apps".
I hope this helps you somewhat. If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.

Kyocera Zio M6000 - Android 2.2!!! cricket

EDIT: We now have our own forum section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1060
Please check there to see if there's a relevant thread for any new topics or issues, if not, make one.
---
Well, that last thread went on FOREVER, I thought a new one might be needed.
This is the continuation from the old thread.
The 2.2 upgrade is here with instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11551718&postcount=1067
Important note: The update will officially be OTA, so you don't need to do this yourself manually here. The OTA will be out shortly. The method provided at that link is for the technically inclined.
If it gets stuck on 98% for a while, that's fine, don't worry about it. Just keep it connected and wait, it can take 30min. Not a problem.
And if you lost your Kyocera logo while messing with the boot image, IT'S BACK
I'm really hoping they fixed the boot loader and perhaps we can get Clockwork Mod working on it again, without it trying to connect to Verizon!
ROOTING
The 1-click root that worked for 1.6 works just the same for 2.2
ISSUES
There doesn't seem to be any multi-touch enabled.
Either the accelerometer or compass is broken, both google sky maps and the compass app jitter around A LOT.
Improvements
All around speed increase.
Camera takes pictures in focus and captures when pressing the button rather than 1+ seconds later.
Night pictures have much better contrast.
Gallery scans 8gb card a single time and opens fast all times after.
hehe, I was going to start a thread, but thought it fitting to wait for you to do it.
Perhaps we should muscle xda again for a ZIO section, or at least a cricket android section? o.0
That's why I was asking people to start new threads starting with "Kyocera Zio M6000 - my issue here" so hopefully the general forum would be flooded... That didn't seem to go too well, there are over 1000 posts in the original thread. Can we beat that here?
lol hopefully not. Now that 2.2 is live (somewhat) I think people will now be more inclined to start new zio threads instead of bombarding the most popular one.
I love this update it made the phone everything it should have been from the start. All the great performance enhancements and cool new features are awesome, I cant stop playing with my phone. I think my new favorite thing is the new lock screen, and the slide to answer feature.
any clue what the "kyocerafailsafetool" is? Its a background app.
Unrelated note: Im going to have to get use to the fact that I dont have to push my task killer widget everytime I open/close an app. lol
apps 2 sd
hi i am looking for instructions to do the apps2sd can anyone point me in the direction for that? also i noticed that all the bloatware is back, is it still safe to remove it same as before? and i guess we still need barnacle to have wifi hotspot. thanks!!! so we dont need taskkiller anymore for 2.2?
apps2sd is located in your application management settings -- just click an app and there will be an option (if available) to "Move to SD"
Should be alright to remove all the crappy demo games and bloatware.
Yes for barnacle.
Sweet. I have been at work all day and just got to a PC that I can do the update from. Got it smoothly on the first try although it does take forever on the initial boot up after update.
Anybody remember the directory that the bloatware is in?

anyone find a way to upgrade to the 2.2 for Zio cricket yet? I just now found out that they finally got it out. I was told though that the only way to get it is to take my phone to a Corp store and they have to do it.
I've been searching all over the net for an hour now trying to find it to do myself but with no avail. it's getting very tiring and frustrating cause i don't have a ride to get to the dam store I need to get to for them to do it.
Woohoo !! I got my Kyocera logo back. Took forever at 98%, glad I waited, I'm rolling. I did a factory reset right before the update, but I think it would have wiped everything anyway.

I know, I was super stoked to get my logo back. Perhaps they've changed the way the OS handles factory resets - perhaps not on the recovery partition anymore?

Its taking me some time to get the download I need, but in the mean time, can someone explain in detail how I should go about doing it?
I'm worried someone might try calling or txting me while its being done. Hope that won't screw things up. I'm still going to try it either way.
Before I start I'm going to do a system restore on my phone first then go ahead with the upgrade from there. Only problem I'm really having is it's in a WinRaR zip file. Do i have to extract the files in the zip first before upgrading, transfer it to the sd card on my phone and go from there? what I have no clue yet but looking for the answers. problem is I only have till 7:00pm tonight to get it done cause i have to be somewhere at 7:30pm till 9pm.
I would like to have it done before i leave if possible.
apps to sd
ok thank you Spz0 i have got a new 8gb sd card that was the biggest i could find on such short notice, so just format it with the phone and then replace all the files off old sd card to new one ? was just making sure so i dont mess it up. what are some good apps for 2.2 that wouldnt work on 1.6 i have phone rooted with universal androot installed apps are titanium backup, root explorer, quick app cache cleaner, better keyboard, adw ex launcher, andguard, astro file browser, beautiful widgets, dropbox, memory up pro. i have found a place to get apps and install from sd card for anyone that wants to try the apps and make sure they work or are what you want before purchasing them and installing them, just go here http://www.4shared.com/ and use search for apps for android apps you want to try. i then get them from market and pay for them if they work and are what i want. saves me from getting something that doesnt work, and then trying to get a refund from market. ok hope this helps everyone. tommy

Rooting problem

Hey guys, I want to first apologize for this post being a little out of place. Being a new user I dont have access to development forums so Im posting this here because this is the phone I have. I downloaded both of the last 2 super one click versions to try and root my phone. after following the process all the way to before rooting, int he top right you are supposed to switch the tab from psneuter to rageagainstthecage. When I click that box however there is no rageagainstthe cage option for either verstion, it is gingerbreak or psneuter. I tried clicking psneuter once and it stated and got to a point where it more or less froze, after 20 min i just alt f5 it and my phone still works. I tech savy guy when it comes to windows but know virtually nothing about linux accept a few terms. I dont want to do something to brick the phone and not entirely sure if I have messed up something so that there is no rageagainstthecage option. Also I was wondering, if you root the device are there updates that still download? For instance if i root by my os is still the stock and they finally come out with gingerbread what happens? Sorry again for misplacement of this thread, I have just been trying to find the answers online for 3 days and there hasnt been any information dealing with this type of problem that I have found. Thanks again
Edit: So I had checked this thread 2 days ago for my answer, and after posting and looking again it looks like a post from yesterday may have some answers, ill have to check when I get home to see if it works from me. Sorry again, I am very litteral so when Im told to do a step and it simply isnt there, it causes me concern, especially when skipping it doesnt work.

[Q] How to stop auto update to 5.9.905?

I am wondering how stop an update on a Droid Bionic?
I understand you need to "move the update from /cache to your SD card" once downloaded.
However, I do not know where "/cache" is located, how it is accessed, or how the moving process is done.
I connected my phone to a PC via USB and could not find "/cache" stored on the phone. The only thing close was a cache folder within "com.google.android.apps.maps", which doesn't seem like what I'm supposed to be looking for. I've also tried looking in Menu>Settings>Storage but do not see any 'cache' info.
I've been searching the forums but have had no luck; plenty of references to a 'cache' from
people who clearly know what they are talking about, but I can not find any explanations or instructions.
Any help is appreciated. This is my first Android device btw! (though I've been reading this forum for a week or two now)
Wow, you're wanting to stop .905 while most people are chomping at the bit to get 6.7.xxx. You can't do it with your PC, you will need to do it from your phone with a file manager app.
I think you need to be rooted to see the cache'. you will also need a root file manager like "root explorer" to move the update to your SD Card.
ICS is much much better than the GB OS. I would reconsider the update, better things are coming around the corner.
If you choose to stay at .902, I would suggest doing some reading about the rooting process. Bad things can happen if you haven't done some research.
There are many here that will be glad to help you, but you will need to be a little knowledgeable to "help them, help you"
root .902
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-bionic-hacks/198045-902-root-method.html
advanced root and play with leaks and return (well written, read 1st post several times,) also has links to current drivers
SamuriHL spends his life supporting that thread and spends too much time helping others
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-bionic-hacks/214902-downgrade-902-no-app-data-loss.html
I'm not sure if I helped or confused, mainly just want you to be aware

thanks; that's really what I needed, a point in the right direction. I confess it's a bit new to me. I just got this phone, programmed it using steps found here (great forum!), and activated it on pageplus, but this was the first time I just got 'stuck' on something.
I read that 3G worked much better with 902 than with 905. this is why I was thinking of sticking with 902, at least until a legit/finalized version of ICS gets released (which allegedly, is very soon...maybe). Since I don't know much about the OS yet I figured I could survive the wait without 'knowing what I'm missing' so to speak.
whoa, just googled and saw that a new leak is out. I picked an odd time to be a newb working on a Bionic.
Thanks again!
If you do take the plunge into a leak, you should probably stick to one where FXZ to 902 isn't blocked so you can return to stock if needed. Everything 235 and after is poison, so to speak, and you won't be able to go back, which (thanks Moto) makes it really difficult to go forward (thanks Moto). I'm on 232 and I'm happy as a clam. It's stable and doesn't have many issues. Now when the official update comes out, they should release an FXZ and we'll be safe again and can all take the dive into ICS.
so, I realized you could postpone the update by just not accepting it when the prompt comes up.
so, I use my Bionic for a while and am quite happy. Then today, I noticed I no longer had 3G service. I tried restarting it, removing the battery,
toggling some of the data changes, no luck. I figured since ICS is (allegedly) right around the corner, there was really no reason not to go ahead and update.
I ran the update. I now have no phone service, no texting, and no 3G/1x.
My question is: how far in the process do I need to go back to get things running again? Right now what I have is a blinking white triangle in the notifications bar. My phone is stock in every way.
Edit: in "about phone/status" I have no phone number (it's blank). no MIN, no network. My PRL version is 'unknown'. so, basically I think I need to just start over, using the info I used successfully before (adam3rd is my hero), beginning with flashing a pageplus PRL. but I shouldn't need to reactivate it on pageplus, or need a new sim card, right? I feel like whatever happened wouldn't have effected my status with PP or the sim card, but I can't find a clear answer....any help appreciated
The white triangle is your phone searching for a signal to activate itself. Take your sim card out and re-insert it. you may need to wipe the dirt off the gold metallic area

thanks for the response. I actually had 4 bars of signal strength along with the white triangle. I'd assumed this meant I could 'detect' the verizon/PP network but wouldn't be able to get out of 'roaming' status until it was activated for the network.
I actually contacted PP via chat to reactivate it. they did it, but the problem wasn't resolved so I tried a factory reset. boom, activation screen came up! now I have fone and text again.
my real problem now is getting data to work consistently. gonna wait until the legit ICS comes out before tackling that one again.

yes, I'm very excited. a little paranoid about updating since I'm on PagePlus and haven't seen anyone use Pageplus and .246 yet. but I may just try using the info on howardforums; I know it 'should' work, but that's just not the same as confirmation.
on a side note; I believe I may have discovered what my data problem was; I think I'd just disabled the 'connect with data over mobile network' option and forgotten I'd done so a month later. pretty funny. but it's been a good learning experience, heh
