[Q] Installing Android 2.3 on Milestone A853

I would like to install CM7 ROM on my Milestone which already has a GOT Froyo 2.2.1. What are the steps I need to follow without bricking my device?

Install latest Androidiani OpenRecovery can be found here.
It's wise to make a backup using OpenRecovery first before you update.
Copy the latest CM7 build to the folder /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates
Don't unzip your download.
If you want to use Google Apps i.e. GMail etc. then you need to download this here.
Then reboot into OpenRecovery and scroll down and Wipe Data / Factory Reset
Go to Apply Updates and choose your freshly downloaded zip file.
Then install the gapps file the same way.
Reboot your phone and voila.
You understand that everything you do, is at your own risk off course. Always use common sense!

Does this also work on Android 2.1?? or is there another procedure for 2.1?
I'm running a Milestone A853 on 2.1

You can install the 2.2 with a full version and flash with the RSDLite then you can put the 2.3.3 cyanogenmod.

Hey all. I hope my experience trying to get ROM Manager and CWM working under AT&T's official FROYO 2.2 update will keep someone from throwing their Captivate against the wall.
Here is the sequence I used. I admit it is kinda convoluted, but it did finally work and I can get to the CWM boot menu. This assumes you follow the instructions associated with each individual step.
1. Blast the phone back to 2.1 with [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY
2. Run the Kies Mini update from Samsung/AT&T to get the Official FROYO build.
3. Only run Shell Root with [APP]SuperOneClick v1.7 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App)
4. Run the recovery 3e modified to work like recovery 2e - Updated 01/23/2011
(You know this worked if when you boot to Recovery mode you see a line that says, checksum confirmation need_checksum[0], shows up.)
5. Reboot!!!
6. Run the SuperOneClick v1.7 and choose Root then Enable Non-Market Apps. Use the psneuter radio button.
7. Reboot!!!
8. Delete any update.zip on the internal SD.
9. Go to the Market and install ROM Manager.
10. Run ROM Manager, let it d/l and install CWM. It should ask for SU permissions. If it doesn't you probably forgot to reboot.
11. Use ROM Manager to Reboot into Recovery.
12. Choose reinstall packages from the BLUE recovery menu. You will have to do this TWICE and then the GREEN CWM Recovery menu should appear.
Now you can use ROM Manager/CWM to do full backups which was the reason why I wanted to get it to work as I'm still leary about how well Titanium Backup works and coming from the IT world I love imaging.
UPDATE
OK I just installed [KERNEL] stock+Voodoo stable 5.x for Captivate and it worked fine. Bobapunk's steps should work fine but I haven't followed his steps.

Well it seemed to work fine, but it gave errors reading cache files and I could no longer install apps off the Market. Doing a Master Clear atm and will try Boba's order.
UPDATE 3
Seems to have been an error with partitioning. Back to 2.1, Kies to 2.2, Odin3 1.81 to PDA the Kernel, then repartition and format ALL partitions (had to do this to format BOOT). Then back to 2.1, Kies to 2.2, OneClick to root, Odin3 1.81 to PDA kernel. Now I can have fun getting rid of the bloatware and I might install plumbBob's GPS fix.
UPDATE 4
Everything is working fine now. Did [FIX] PlumbBob GPS Fix 1.0 [UPDATE 3/10/2011] and the GPS locks on in about 5 seconds in LBSTestMode, but Google Maps/Navigation still seems to lose lock often. Using Captivate SGS Tools and recommend it highly.
UPDATE 5
Works beautifully except for Messaging does an FC on boot. Doesn't seem to matter and I'm not a big texter and it does work afterward. One of the system apps I uninstalled with TB must be tied in to it. Not sure which one and my week at home is up. Disable media scanning in SGS Tools doesn't work, but Rescan Media ROOT (search the Market) does.

I am glad that you got this figured out. I accomplished this a little differently.
I had AT&T 2.1 rooted
I upgraded to 2.2 via Kies
I rooted with Super One Click
I flashed Supercurio's Kb1+ Voodoo Kernel
I flashed CWM Recovery with ROM Manager
This worked fine on my 1009 build captivare. It seems simpler than your process and you get Voodoo along with CWM Recovery.

Well I'm trying to keep it as stock as possible. Next step will be to use TB to get rid of the AT&T bloatware. I haven't decided if I will use the Voodoo lagfix or not as it makes a radical filesystem change and some posts have warned about flashing new ROMS to it's FS and ending up with expensive paperweights.
BTW didn't you have to go back to the stock (i.e. unrooted) ROM to get Kies to perform the update?

I used Kies mini to upgrade to 2.2, then rooted, installed Rom Manager, and Titanium Backup, TB works well, but Rom Manager wont reboot in recovery and go to green...always stays in blue...error messages when I reinstall pkgs..so...reading your fix, if I was to be able to flash Supercurio Kb1+ Voodoo Kernel, should I be able to get to the green in Rom Manager?...what is CWM Recovery?...and what about that update file in my sd...delete?..or keep it?

CWM 2.5: How to upgrade to 3?

I currently have ClockworkMod 2.5 and am trying to upgrade to 3 to install CM&. I currently have Doc's ROM, if that makes any difference.
ROM Manager doesn't give me any options to update to v3.
The CM7 wiki has steps to update for non-rooted users, but I don't think I need to do that.
I am looking for a CWM download to install via Odin. Is this the simplest method?
I've searched this forum as well as the web, and I can't find anything related to the Vibrant.
Any tips would be appreciated...

Do you know that Vibrant has its special sub-forum?
Edit: Yours is Bell's Vibrant. Never mind then. Just flash speedmod kernel.

That's it... Flash a kernel that it has cwm... Isn't depending of the rom.

Have you tried using ROM Manager and selecting Flash Clockwork Recovery?
For me it asked me what phone I was using (select Galaxy S MTD if you want to use CM7) and then asked what version of CMW I wanted. Just choose CWM3.x there and you should be fine. It will tell you that your current phone isn't supported, blah blah, but ignore it.

I'm sure he's going to install CM7, not already installed. Just use speedmod kernel. There's no need for CWM 3. If you got CM7 installed, it's automatically CWM 3.

Actually it is not completely automatic, you still need to flash a CWM3 recovery from inside ROM Manager, otherwise you can't see CM7 Nightlies from ROM Manager.

I was able to get CM7 on my Bell Galaxy S.
I did try the ROM Manager but I couldn't get it to update CWM. It would try to install from Android recovery 3e, not CWM.
After many loops of stock 2.3.3, Doc's ROM 2.2.1, CM7 Nightly 15, and other steps, I was able to manually flash the nightly 18 using CWM.
For some reason, the update method for stock mentioned on the CM7 Galaxy S didn't work for me. Even after flashing speedmod kernel, I still came up with CWM 2.5.
Also, even with CWM 2.5, I was able to flash nightly build 18. Hope this helps someone else trying to update CWM.

well if you are rooted on a stock rom and have a valid Custom Recovery - such as overcome team, you can actually do it using GOO MANAGER (Available via Play Store - Or Market). Still, you need to be very careful not to brick your tab. You need at to read and follow threads on ICS (CM9 based). You should also understand that ICS has 2 different systems.. therefore read about what MTD is and EXT is.
If you are NOT rooted, and do not have Custom Recovery -- (Or don't even know what they mean).. it's like asking how to turn a Stone into a Diamond.
the pre-requisite of installing ICS on P1000 is (Learn it by heart):
1. Rooting
2. Install a custom Recovery (or you can install Overcome Kernel).
3. Understand about: RFS, EXT, and MTD.
4. Read threads by the CM9 team.
When you have done all those, you are ready to install. The only time you will need to use ODIN is when you install Overcome Kernel.
Note: Step 1 and 2 can be replaced by installing GB Stock Safe ROM on Overcome Team website. -- search around for it on the DEV forum.
Downloading the ICS ROM, and even flashing it can be done from GOO Manager (on your tab).

And I have read in the AOKP 4.0.4 to go to overcome web page, which is my problem....
I do not understand what do I have to do in the overcome website.

What I do next??

Next,
If you are thinking of installing the AOKP, you can't get that from GOO Manager.
You will need to download the zip file from AOKP thread to your phone - can be done directly without PC, and flash you from CWM recovery menu (Power + Volume Up)
on the recovery menu, select "Install from SD Card".
Please remember to backup everything before installing new ROM.
Please Don't forget to do Factory Wipe and Cache Wipe before flashing. (I remember they have it in their scripts, but better safe than sorry).
During install of the latest build (MTD), you will be in a loop and your tab would seem to be bricked.. just reboot it back to the recovery menu, and redo the install. (it's specified in the threads if you read carefully).
You will enjoy your new ICS, as if you just bought a new tablet.

No and no.
You don't get ics by flashing overcome.
No you should not need restock. Although it is preferred to restock using overcome package
But you need a PC since you need Odin.
Basically
1) restock or have a good base gb rom.
2) use Odin to flash just overcome kernel.
3) boot into cwm recovery that is included in overcome kernel.
4) flash aokp or cm9 from sdcard using cwm
5) flash gapps.

Very encouraging indeed. I might consider getting mobile Odin, to escape the hassle of using a PC too. Nice find.
I am on AOKP Milestone #5.
But it seems like CM9 has quite a few things going now, like a deep sleep thing that save batts, and also there is a Pdroid patch for it, that won't work with AOKP.
But AOKP has nice ROM Control tweaks.
Your pick.
Remember to put them on sdcard together with gapps.
One thing you should note:
when you flash the ICS package, your tab will reboot to recovery again (some mistook it as a brick-like boot loop). It is actually booting into the recovery that comes with the the ICS flash.
It will be slightly different from the Overcome one,
and the external sd will be called internal sd instead. (at least that is what I found in AOKP, but I think both uses Humberos CWM recovery).
So choose to flash from "internal sd" even though it is external.
then after flash complete, flash the gapps.

milestone #5 of course. that is the latest.
gapps is google apps: google Play Store, Google Finance, (used to be google Maps and Gmail, but more and more being made available via Play)
Google forbids people packaging their apps into a ROM unless it is mod of stock rom that already has it (like overcome is a mod if JQ1 rom).
You can find links to gapps in Stimp0z first post.
Do read the first 3 post and revisit it again later as it made more sense after you have played with AOKP for a while. That will avoid unnecessarily asking noob questions in the thread.

Is it because you are downloading straight to tab.
Maybe the cache space not enough.
Better download on a PC and put to sdcard.
Anyway, hold back a day or two.

[Q] Need a little help and clarification upgrading to AOKP

Hey everybody. So im intrested in upgrading my Froyo 2.2 to the ICS AOKP rom. Earlier i screwed everything up by installing the wrong kernel and had to reinstall Froyo because my phone wouldent boot. Anyway, i wanted to list what im going to do to make sure im doing it right.
Right now my info is:
Phone model: Samsung sgh i897
Radio (baseband): I897UCKB2
Firmware and Build number: 2.2 FROYO.UCKB2
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
1. I will first upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3 using Kies and whatever the samsung website tells me to
1.5 Root and allow sideloading
2. i will put on CWM using odin and this link
(question: i should put on speedmod-kernel-i897-k13e-500hz.tar if my kernel is 3e, correct? or should i just use the first one on the top of the dl list? )
3. follow the AOKP installation instructions but get the actual rom from here
3.5 wipe my data, install rom, then wipe data again
4. Use Titanium Backup and APN Restore to get all my shizz back
5. Finish
couple of questions though. On the AOKP installation instructions, how do i make a nandroid? Do i just go to backup and backup whatever is there? and do i have to Flash Team Hacksung's latest build? If so, where would i find it? i can only find one for the samsung fascinate here.
or should i just use this?

You can combine steps 1-2 into one easy step by going here and grabbing the "I897UCKH3 Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, With Bootloaders, With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog" flash package. That will flash your bootloaders, stock rom, and give you root access and CWM all in one easy step.
The rest of the steps look good.
As for making the backup, once you have installed the AOKP rom and have successfully booted once, reboot into CWM recovery and go to "backup and restore" and choose the backup option. That's a nandroid backup.

In general it's a similar procedure, with a few changes:
1. If you're going from any of the ICS roms back to a non-CM7 or MIUI rom, you have to flash back to stock GB first (without bootloaders). This resets the partitioning scheme to the correct form.
2. Once you've flashed the GB bootloaders, don't flash them again - there's no need and it puts your phone in unnecessary danger.
3. To flash between ICS roms, it's generally just a matter of wiping data, flashing the rom, and reinstalling your apps. Same between GB and Froyo roms.

im having a problem. The bootloader you directed to me doesnt work. I downloaded the I897UCKH3 Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
With Bootloaders - Link 1 / Link 2 [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]
put it on my desktop, running it as admin. I also took out the sim of my capvitate and put it on download mode and connected it. However nothing happens. All i get is <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
should i have any other files other than the I897UCKH3_withBL?

That should be all you need. Take a look at the captivate connection issues thread in my signature for some more ideas.
You can also try one of the Heimdall-based one-clicks, or try getting full Odin or full Heimdall setup and flash a stock package from those.

Hey jmtheiss. I ended up using a different computer to try the bootloader again, and it worked. I was also able to do the rest of the steps and install ICS AOKP. Thanks! Its really packed with a lot of features so it will be intresting to learn. Thanks!
