[Q] Need a little help and clarification upgrading to AOKP - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody. So im intrested in upgrading my Froyo 2.2 to the ICS AOKP rom. Earlier i screwed everything up by installing the wrong kernel and had to reinstall Froyo because my phone wouldent boot. Anyway, i wanted to list what im going to do to make sure im doing it right.
Right now my info is:
Phone model: Samsung sgh i897
Radio (baseband): I897UCKB2
Firmware and Build number: 2.2 FROYO.UCKB2
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
1. I will first upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3 using Kies and whatever the samsung website tells me to
1.5 Root and allow sideloading
2. i will put on CWM using odin and this link
(question: i should put on speedmod-kernel-i897-k13e-500hz.tar if my kernel is 3e, correct? or should i just use the first one on the top of the dl list? )
3. follow the AOKP installation instructions but get the actual rom from here
3.5 wipe my data, install rom, then wipe data again
4. Use Titanium Backup and APN Restore to get all my shizz back
5. Finish
couple of questions though. On the AOKP installation instructions, how do i make a nandroid? Do i just go to backup and backup whatever is there? and do i have to Flash Team Hacksung's latest build? If so, where would i find it? i can only find one for the samsung fascinate here.
or should i just use this?
Also, thank you in advanced. I sure did say a lot.

You can combine steps 1-2 into one easy step by going here and grabbing the "I897UCKH3 Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, With Bootloaders, With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog" flash package. That will flash your bootloaders, stock rom, and give you root access and CWM all in one easy step.
The rest of the steps look good.
As for making the backup, once you have installed the AOKP rom and have successfully booted once, reboot into CWM recovery and go to "backup and restore" and choose the backup option. That's a nandroid backup.

Thanks! ill try that stuff out when i get home. Hopefully it will all work out! Quick question: To install any other rom (assuming its compatible with my phone), i do the same thing?

In general it's a similar procedure, with a few changes:
1. If you're going from any of the ICS roms back to a non-CM7 or MIUI rom, you have to flash back to stock GB first (without bootloaders). This resets the partitioning scheme to the correct form.
2. Once you've flashed the GB bootloaders, don't flash them again - there's no need and it puts your phone in unnecessary danger.
3. To flash between ICS roms, it's generally just a matter of wiping data, flashing the rom, and reinstalling your apps. Same between GB and Froyo roms.

im having a problem. The bootloader you directed to me doesnt work. I downloaded the I897UCKH3 Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
With Bootloaders - Link 1 / Link 2 [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]
put it on my desktop, running it as admin. I also took out the sim of my capvitate and put it on download mode and connected it. However nothing happens. All i get is <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
should i have any other files other than the I897UCKH3_withBL?
What do?

That should be all you need. Take a look at the captivate connection issues thread in my signature for some more ideas.
You can also try one of the Heimdall-based one-clicks, or try getting full Odin or full Heimdall setup and flash a stock package from those.

Hey jmtheiss. I ended up using a different computer to try the bootloader again, and it worked. I was also able to do the rest of the steps and install ICS AOKP. Thanks! Its really packed with a lot of features so it will be intresting to learn. Thanks!

[Q] ODIN, Download Mode, JH7, Modems, Kernels... somebody school me

I've searched and read FAQs a lot already. I read the threads that XDA suggested before posting this.
I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm a little fuzzy. Want to root my gf's AT&T Captivate (JH7) and install Froyo for her but still a little unclear on exactly how everything fits together.
From what I've gathered so far I can use the update.zip method to install Clockwork Recovery and make a nandroid backup of her current configuration without even rooting it, right?
Then can I just flash whichever ROM I want? Will the ROM.zip update her to the correct modem/kernel at that time?
About using ODIN to restore - do I restore to the version she is on NOW or the version the phone originally shipped with, if different? And do I REALLY need to ODIN restore between ROMs or is a full wipe with CWM recovery enough?
Also read that CWM recovery doesn't work with Froyo at this time so can't do nandroid backups of Froyo ROMs?
Somebody catch me up... with my mt3g and mt4g I'm totally comfortable but this stuff is confusing me. I'm fairly comfortable with adb and already used it to sideload an app for her without rooting.
Thanks for your help guys.
I'm pretty new at this too so I'll try to answer what I can.
Before you try anything, just make sure you can get into recovery and download mode.
Recovery:
- Hold Vol Up + Vol Down + Power button.
- from adb type reboot recovery
- from Rom Manager, select the Reboot to Recovery option.
Download
- Hold Vol Up + Vol Down and insert the usb cable. This works for me. Getting Odin to detect it can be a bit tricky. I usually start Odin first, then connect phone.
- from adb type reboot download (I think)
From what I've gathered so far I can use the update.zip method to install Clockwork Recovery and make a nandroid backup of her current configuration without even rooting it, right?

Not sure to be honest. The way I do it is that I install Rom Manager from the market first. It will ask you for root though. I like this way better as you can download and install the appropriate update.zip from the app. Rooting is very very easy. You can use this tool:

To be safe, I only try ROMs that I find in the Captivate Development sub forum. Most of them can be installed with CWM. Place the *.zip in the root of your internal SD card, reboot into CWM and select the install .zip from card option. Don't freak out.
There is also a way to flash roms from Odin but I've never tried it to be honest.

I believe it will restore to Samsung's stock version (I897UCJF6). Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Remember that this is only for the Captivate. It is safer to do a full restore whenever you are trying a new rom. The only exception, I think, is when you are upgrading versions (say, Darky's 7.8 to 8.0)
Also read that CWM recovery doesn't work with Froyo at this time so can't do nandroid backups of Froyo ROMs?

I always install it using ROM manager and it works fine.
Now, from what I've been reading and doing this week, I learned that apart from the ROM, you can also flash the kernel and model separately, in case you have specific needs. For instance, I flashed glitterball's kernel to overclock the phone. Just remember that 2.1 Roms need 2.1 kernels and modems, the same applies for 2.2. Here is a list of modems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272
I'm currently trying out the TLJL3.
Remember that there are many ways to get to Rome. Also, use Titanium Backup to save your apps.
tl;dr:
1. Root.
2. Install CWM.
3. Verify that you can access recovery and download mode.
4. Download ROM (CWM .zip installable).
5. Read read read.

Hmm... Most of your answers can be found in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
The ROM file would contain a kernel and a modem that will update her current kernel and modem. She can flash the kernel and modem of her choice after installing a custom ROM without breaking anything.
For Backing up use Titanium Backup, u need to ROOT your phone using directions in the earlier link provided.
When using custom ROMs it is always better to do a full wipe and flash to stock and master clear, i.e JF6 (using Odin one-click, or Odin with 3-button) or JH7 using the DG version.
You can follow
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
Update.zip file once installed would load CWM from which you can install custom ROMs. Once you install custom ROMs, they are always rooted, and you needn't root again. It's a one time thing.
Hope this resolves everything..
Thanks for your replies, guys, I'm actually very familiar with rooting and flashing. To clarify, I already know HOW to install a custom ROM, that's not the issue. I'm more concerned about compatibility once I start installing custom stuff, and about UNROOTING if I need to. It sounds like if all I'm doing is installing a custom recovery and then a custom ROM, I don't really need to worry about it.
I always opt for manual method through recovery as opposed to Rom Manager.
I would use SuperOneClick for the stock ROM as I've used it before without issues. Most likely I would use the update.zip method to install clockwork recovery so I can make a nandroid backup of her completely unrooted stock setup before proceeding.
I can get into stock recovery just fine but haven't tried download mode yet.
And yes I would ONLY flash ROMs for the Captivate specifically, unless someone manages to complete a port for Sense.
Sounds like your good to go then.
... and Odin is just the cheap and easy method to return the phone back to stock.
So if you ever need to give it back and need it restored this is the easiest method to do it. But I would suggest formatting the internal SD Card to make sure there are no remnants of you playing around with the phone.

Agreed, will definitely do that.
I also heard that when using ODIN to restore to JF6 the OTA update to JH7 won't come back on its own?
lol yea.. but it doesn't matter unless you were wanting to keep it on "stock".
If your flashing or returning the phone your ok with keeping it on JF6.
If your phone came with JH7 and you have issues with Odin one-click, you might want to look at this guide, it has worked great for me and many others:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
How do I know what build number her phone is? I see references to build number 1010, but I don't know if this phone CAME WITH jh7 or if that was an update. I bought it used. If I try to restore to JF6 will that brick it??
EDIT - found it. She's a 1007. So if I used ODIN-3 to restore to JF6, how do I get back to JH7? Reading elsewhere it seems that a nandroid restore won't include the baseband?

Download the Mini Kies from here Download Center for SEG-I897ZKAATT.
Make sure the phone asks for USB on connection and select Kies mode when you plug into pc. Then open Mini Kies, it should recognize your phone and tell you an update is available. Follow the instructions from there.

Ok cool, thanks for your help! Already downloaded Kies from the Samsung website.
About to flash her phone but saw something somewhere about backing up some *.nv file to preserve her IMEI# and stuff? Can you link me to a guide on that? Can not for the life of me remember where I saw that.

[Q] First time rooting/installing custom ROM, would like to verify info

Just want to start by saying this is a great forum, lots of information, and I've read alot of it, as there are so many twists and turns depending on your device.
Here is where I am at with my first time rooting/installing a custom rom
Started with stock Model GT-I9000M, Firmware version 2.2, Baseband version I9000UGJL2, Kernel 2.6.32.9 ([email protected] #3), Build number FROYO.UGJL2.
Step 1, I rooted my device using SuperOneClick
Step 2, backed up /efs and /st13 folders via ADB and BusyBox
Step 3, Backed up apps, sytem data via Titanium Backup
Step 4, Installed CWM from Android Market, Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, selected 'Galaxy S i9000' when prompted
(Honestly this was confusing as I tried to select 'GalaxyS i9000 (MTD)' as I have the i9000M, but was prompted with the 'GalaxyS i9000 (MTD) does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet.')
Now have 'ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2' installed, but was unable to boot into it, as I found out I have 3e reovery, which doesn't allow the installation of zip files without signature verification. So after much reading I learned I can get around this my installing a custom kernel, searching this link I realized there is no CF-Root kernel for my UGJL2 build, after more reading I came across this link which said if on stock Froyo with 3e recovery to use the latest Super Optimized kernel. I now have Kernel version 2.6.32.9 [email protected]_8_3#1725, and am able to boot into CWM recovery.
Step 5, I am following the instructions below to complete the installation of my choosen Deodexed Gingerbread ROM, and I get to the second last step which tells to upgrade to the GingerBread bootloader, but after doing so I'm reverted back to 3e reovery, with no access to CWM recovery.
Installation Instructions
1. Make sure you’ve backed up any apps / data you need to keep
I would recommend using Titanium Backup. Also, it is best when upgrading to a new version of Android to only backup your user apps and not to include any system data.
2. Copy the XXJVP_Deodexed_I9000M.zip ROM file to your phone.
3. Upgrade to the Gingerbread bootloader
You need to do this only if you’re currently running the original ROM (or any Android 2.2 ROM). Read and follow the instructions here carefully. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14013450&postcount=1)
4. Flash the XXJVP_Deodexed_I9000M.zip update using CWM.
So I have reinstalled the Super Optimized kernel, and am able to access CWM recovery, is it safe to upgrade this ROM without the GingerBread bootloader? I obviously won't be able to use the GingerBread Bootloader, as it blocks CWM. Any advice would be appreciated.
Two side questions,
1. When I was doing this post, I accidentally clicked the wrong phone in the 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery', and had to redo the flash again picking the 'Galaxy S i9000', however, now when I reboot, there is no option for the Super Optimized Kernels 'advanced ulk features' so that I can ensure that the lagfix is disabled when I get to actually flashing the ROM. If I reinstall the Super Optimized Kernel again, will that option show up again?
2. When booting the phone now, I noticed the graphic that shows the model number of the phone starts out with 'I9000M' and then switches to 'I9000', dropping the 'M', is this an issue, or do I just ignore?
Thanks again.

[Q] Question about Flashing ICS

I want to Flash Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3] (Link to ROM Thread) but I am not for sure what Bootloaders or Kernel I need to use.
I currently have:
Firmware Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: I897UCKB1
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: FROYO.UCKB1
In general, the Gingerbread bootloaders are preferred with any of the ICS ROMs, because they are more ubiquitous and can be used with virtually any version 2.1 thru 4.0. Kernel-wise, the ICS ROMs come with a kernel, and your only other option is Glitch v14 beta right now...but mostly, you shouldn't need to worry about flashing anything beyond what's in the ROM itself right now.

So that ROM I listed in my OP comes with its own Kernel?
And is there a particular Bootloader I should use?
If there is, may you please link me to it?
Hey im currently running the ROM you are asking about. To answer your questions you have to be on the gingerbread bootloaders. You can flash those using odin, or since there is an official update out, use Kies mini to update your phone to gingerbread and that will flash the bootloaders for you.
About the kernel, the ROM you posted includes a kernel in the .zip and when you install the .zip it will flash the kernel for you. Its a fine kernel and works great so dont worry about changing it unless you have problems.
Here is the link on how to flash the bootloaders using Odin. Its not a hard process and pretty safe so let us know how you come out on the other side!

froyo will still boot. GB BL are backwards compatible and the ISCSGS script should allow it to flash over any ROM
Hi all.
as i can't post yet in a thread mentioned by mrnapolean1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362092) I'll try to ask my question here, as it related to a question asked by this thread starter
so i have gingerbread 2.3.5, installed CornKernel_UCKK4_v603 and custom rom SimplyStock KK4 V1.0 , so if i wanted to switch Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3] should i do following?
1. wipe data /factory reset
2.wipe system
3.flash from recovery mode Android 4.0.3 zip?
I already have a backup made with Efs Pro as a tar file
anything else i need to do?
thank you so much in advance

Yes, Froyo will still boot. If this were a layer cake it would go something like bootloader, kernel, rom. So basically, your bootloader has nothing to do with your kernel or your rom but it is at the bottom layer of the boot process. It does effect which ROMs you can use though as gingerbread and ICS roms require GB bootloaders. So flash the bootloaders, you will still be on Froyo. Update to GB. Root GB. Place the ROM on your internal SD and then flash it. If you run into any problems check the common problems page found on the first page of the SGSICS ROM.

First, if you want to keep any of your apps or contacts backup those as well using Titanium Backup. Make sure to backup to the External SD card or make a copy of the backup somewhere other than the phones internal SD.
Second, you dont have to wipe data/factory reset before you flash. This is only if you have the problem of a bootloop when you try to install. I had this problem and when I did the wipe data afterward it fixed it immediately. So follow this:
1: Boot into CWM
2: install rom
IF you have an issue with a boot loop at this point
1: Get back into CWM using the button combination
2: Wipe data/Factory Rest and Wipe Cach

IMHO the best way to go from gingerbread to ics 4.0 is to
- in the development section download stock kk4 without bootloaders, unless you dont have them http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
- then download a kernel of your choice probably cornkernal and put it on your internal sd card
- download ICS latest build and gapps and put them on your internal sd
- oneclick odin the stock kk4, let it boot up completely
- power off and install kernal via odin without aut reset
- boot into recovery, factory/data reset, clean cache, clear dalvik, install latest ics, then install gapps right after,
- reboot system and youre done.
IF you want to go back to your other rom the simplest way is to just kk4 fresh install, install kernal via odin, then isntall your rom.
I always keep all my contacts synced with gmail, and titanium backup any game data or app data i need, and reinstall apps through the market.
hope this helps

gingerbread.
I presume it was not rooted and has no custom recovery either?
well if you are rooted on a stock rom and have a valid Custom Recovery - such as overcome team, you can actually do it using GOO MANAGER (Available via Play Store - Or Market). Still, you need to be very careful not to brick your tab. You need at to read and follow threads on ICS (CM9 based). You should also understand that ICS has 2 different systems.. therefore read about what MTD is and EXT is.
If you are NOT rooted, and do not have Custom Recovery -- (Or don't even know what they mean).. it's like asking how to turn a Stone into a Diamond.
the pre-requisite of installing ICS on P1000 is (Learn it by heart):
1. Rooting
2. Install a custom Recovery (or you can install Overcome Kernel).
3. Understand about: RFS, EXT, and MTD.
4. Read threads by the CM9 team.
When you have done all those, you are ready to install. The only time you will need to use ODIN is when you install Overcome Kernel.
Note: Step 1 and 2 can be replaced by installing GB Stock Safe ROM on Overcome Team website. -- search around for it on the DEV forum.
Downloading the ICS ROM, and even flashing it can be done from GOO Manager (on your tab).

well if you are rooted on a stock rom and have a valid Custom Recovery - such as overcome team, you can actually do it using GOO MANAGER (Available via Play Store - Or Market).

Haha!! Turning rock into a diamond!! Funny
Thanks! I have rroot and I have read the threads at the development section,
And I have read in the AOKP 4.0.4 to go to overcome web page, which is my problem....
I do not understand what do I have to do in the overcome website.
I believe I currently have a stock ROM installed gingerbread 2.3.3
What I do next??
If you are already rooted, what you actually need to do is just download the Overcome Kernel on the website and flash it (and if I remember correctly, you will need to use ODIN on this -- but trust me it's not as difficult as it sounds -- in fact it will be over in less than 3 minutes).
Next,
If you are thinking of installing the AOKP, you can't get that from GOO Manager.
You will need to download the zip file from AOKP thread to your phone - can be done directly without PC, and flash you from CWM recovery menu (Power + Volume Up)
on the recovery menu, select "Install from SD Card".
Please remember to backup everything before installing new ROM.
Please Don't forget to do Factory Wipe and Cache Wipe before flashing. (I remember they have it in their scripts, but better safe than sorry).
During install of the latest build (MTD), you will be in a loop and your tab would seem to be bricked.. just reboot it back to the recovery menu, and redo the install. (it's specified in the threads if you read carefully).
You will enjoy your new ICS, as if you just bought a new tablet.

thanks pal!!!

Hey again...... hahaha
I like to know if I flashed the overcome kernel, I will have the ICS instantly?? Without doing anything else??
And I would like to know also about the GOO manager and how do I have ics with that thanks!!!
Restock?
Do i have to restock?
No and no.
You don't get ics by flashing overcome.
No you should not need restock. Although it is preferred to restock using overcome package
But you need a PC since you need Odin.
Basically
1) restock or have a good base gb rom.
2) use Odin to flash just overcome kernel.
3) boot into cwm recovery that is included in overcome kernel.
4) flash aokp or cm9 from sdcard using cwm
5) flash gapps.

I downloaded it just now and it looks like it will work! Ill go ahead and give it a try!!
Hey!! It works!!! Now I flashed the overcome kernel & i now have cwm recovery! Thanks!
(i used the mobile ODIN)
Then? What do I do next? Which do u prefer? AOKP or the CM9 ROM?
congrats.
Very encouraging indeed. I might consider getting mobile Odin, to escape the hassle of using a PC too. Nice find.
I am on AOKP Milestone #5.
But it seems like CM9 has quite a few things going now, like a deep sleep thing that save batts, and also there is a Pdroid patch for it, that won't work with AOKP.
But AOKP has nice ROM Control tweaks.
Your pick.
Remember to put them on sdcard together with gapps.
One thing you should note:
when you flash the ICS package, your tab will reboot to recovery again (some mistook it as a brick-like boot loop). It is actually booting into the recovery that comes with the the ICS flash.
It will be slightly different from the Overcome one,
and the external sd will be called internal sd instead. (at least that is what I found in AOKP, but I think both uses Humberos CWM recovery).
So choose to flash from "internal sd" even though it is external.
then after flash complete, flash the gapps.
Thank you, thank u sooooo much!! Haha
hey, i decided 2 go w/ the AOKP ROM.
which should I download?
The milestone 5 ROM?
or the build #33 ROM?
And what is gapps?
milestone #5 of course. that is the latest.
gapps is google apps: google Play Store, Google Finance, (used to be google Maps and Gmail, but more and more being made available via Play)
Google forbids people packaging their apps into a ROM unless it is mod of stock rom that already has it (like overcome is a mod if JQ1 rom).
You can find links to gapps in Stimp0z first post.
Do read the first 3 post and revisit it again later as it made more sense after you have played with AOKP for a while. That will avoid unnecessarily asking noob questions in the thread.
You can also get gapps from here
http://goo.im/gapps/
look for the gapps-ics-......
naturally grab the latest, but in fact older one is fine, and will likely get updated by Play once you are online.
Thank you priyana 4 ur help & support!
I will do the update now w/ AOKP Milestone 5 & update u later if it is sucessful or it bricked my tab!!!
Bye 4 now )
Heyyyy. Im DOWNLOADING the AOKP ROM many times, but its unsucessful!! What should I do?
Is it because you are downloading straight to tab.
Maybe the cache space not enough.
Better download on a PC and put to sdcard.
Anyway, hold back a day or two.
Build #35 coming.

[Q] Went back to stock, now having trouble getting out

Dear friends,
Little background. I was on CM10 stable, but decided to I update to CM10.1 M1, After the update, had no market, however, so I tried to downgrade to CM10 stable and it bricked. So .. back to stock it is! Now I am having trouble getting out of stock. I am not new to flashing, but I never had this kind of a persistent problem.
The short summary of what I get no matter what I try is: Every kernel that is not the stock Eclair kernel has boot-animation messed up (random lines of color on screen), and I cannot enter recovery - I sometimes can boot sometimes cannot.
Steps I have taken
I went back to stock Eclair rom + non-root kernel (LINK).
I rooted (LINK)
But when I tried to update kernel to allow CWM, it bricked my phone. So back to stock, again!
I tried this a few times. Now, the latest attempt, I tried the stock 2.3.5 rom + rooted, CWM kernel (LINK... I get the phone running, but I cannot get into recovery, and no utility that has "reboot to recovery" has managed to get me into recovery.
The plea
All I want is CWM, so I can install what I want. Without it, I am stuck with Odin one-click and Odin flashable packages (Heimdall does not want to work right for me - the drivers are messed up - and trying to fix those brkeas my Odin drivers).
I have no data on the phone at the moment, I can reinstall everything if need be .. but I am out of ideas besides keep trying different roms and kernels until something gives me CWM and I am free again.
I have AT&T GB bootloaders.
thanks for any help, I will try to provide any additional info I can.

Messed up screen = wrong bootloaders. Flash Odin KK4 with bootloaders
From there, follow this link.
Finally, you can get back up on CM10.1 - Btw, you had no market cause you didn't flash their Gapps.
UPDATE .. ugh that took a while:
1) From the master list LINK, wet back to 2.1, I897UCJF6
2) From the same thread installed I897UCKF1 with bootloaders
3) rooted: LINK (I know -not XDA)
4) removed the 3e recovery lock (LINK) - this did not seem to work, but I did do it.
5) installed Speedmod kernel from here LINK - this did not boot, but it did install CWM
6) installed CM10.0 Stable from SD cadr - twice
7) installed gapps
8) just did my first boot to CM10.
This is both a record for myself for later, and for anyone else that may find this useful.
