[Q] How to back up Captivate?

I'm terribly sorry to ask this, as it probably has been answered previously, but I've looked all over the internet on how to back up my Captivate, with no success. So I dreadfully ask, how do I back up my data so I can upgrade to JI6 afterward?

lol...just 5 mins back i was searching for the same thing and i rooted to cognition 2.2beta7........well u must be rooted....u can backup everything by titanum backup(go to backup/restore and there u can backup all/selected stuff)....also download rom manager and then click on flash clockwordmod......

Root your device.
Install ClockworkMod, then go into CWM and download the recovery ROM for your device.
Click back up current ROM.
Be aware, both of you, that CWM is currently unable to extract boot.img so if you upgrade from Eclair to the leaked Froyo, you will need Windows/Odin to restore your device. Make sure you have in your hand Odin AND the correct Captivate factory Eclair image before you attempt to upgrade to the leaked Froyo.

oh!!!
well i do have the odin by the name -- I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 -- with me??is this what i should be having???
also since now i am on cog2.2beta7, i tried restoring through titanium but i cant seem to find my backups!!!! also when i mounted the sd card it shows the clockworkmod folder to be of 454mb....it has a backup folder with a few stuff in it.....
so if i have to restore ill have to use odin or cant i just boot into clockword recovery an do a backup???

You will need Odin that you have to flash back to stock JF6. If you want to use your backup from Clockwork of your current setup you must be running 2.2 with the 2e kernel. Clockwork backs up your ROM not your kernel.

Sorry if this is a repeat, im very new to Android and a little confused on backups.
I rooted and then did this after downloading clockwork/rom manager:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this considered a Nandroid backup? Is there anything else I need to do as far as backups or is this the best method?
This will allow me to go back to my stock Rom at any point , is that correct?
Then I should use Titanium Backup for data/apps/settings?

[Q] Can't use Clockworkmod to switch between ROMS

I've been trying to switch in between backed-up ROMS using Clockworkmod without success. I have to use ODIN to flash back to STOCK Eclair, and root it before I can flash another fresh ROM using Clockworkmod.
None of the backups I make work when restored, and goes into the AT&T-screen-reboot-loop.
I don't want to use ODIN because it's froze during the flash & bricked 2 phones that I've had to send back for warranty replacement. NOT GOOD!
I know that in the market Clockworkmod states that you must use a "compatible" ROM, but I've never seen a ROM in XDA that specifically state's it's compatible (I've installed Cognition & Perception's latests.)
I've read about having to remove any lag-fixes before installing, but if it's built into the ROM how is this done?
Even if I have to flash back to a backed-up stock ROM before re-flashing a new ROM that'd be fine, but this has never worked. No ROM I back-up with Clockworkmod has ever been restored successfully, making me use ODIN, which twice has bricked my phone.

Nope, odin is it. You can try to flash the rom you have a backup of over your current then try the backup but you are playing with fire.
How did you manage to brick two phones with odin? That program is used by everyone who flashes for the most part, and although I have heard of issues the over whelming consensus its that it its easy and reliable

How? I dunno! lol
ODIN basically freezes and won't progress while doing the actual flash. I've used ODIN before w/o problems, but twice now it's frozen in the middle of the flash & bricked the phone. The phone was 100% dead (didn't try a jig as some suggested yet though.) Won't power on, go into download mode/recovery. Nothing.
I was really hoping to avoid using ODIN. Crap!

What others have said is it possibly is related to CWM and our file system. Something along the lines of if you are flashing a ROM over another ROM and the kernels, modem, etc being different will cause the boot loop. That seems to be what has happened to me. It is always recommended by Dev's (even though it is not always necessary) to go back to stock and flash your Rom. Remember though, once you have your update.zip for CWM on your phone you do not need to root. Just do 3 button combo or ADB command to get to recovery mode.

ok so i have rooted my device today, now im trying to install darky's official port rom on my captivate, how do i install it from the recovery mode without hurting and bricking my phone in anyway. I saw a bunch of youtube videos which said to make a backup then wipe data and then installl the zip from sd.
Is this way correct or do i have to do something with odin3 with this rom?

If your phone is rooted and you have CWM on your phone just get to recovery and select install zip from sd card. Select where you put the ROM zip and select it. Simple as that. You can make a backup prior to installing the ROM from ROM manager if you want to do so. I personally do not do it anymore because I change so much and there are issues for restoring if you are not on the same kernel from the backup.

It shouldn't have. You didn't rename the file to update.zip did you? Are you only rooted with no previous rom?

ok by mistake i touched some touch buttons and it rebooted my phone and is stuck on recovery, everytime i restart/reboot in recovery.

I would use odin one click to flash to 2.1. Then get into recovery mode and flash the rom.

Sorry I had to get some sleep. What process did you do to fix your issue? And yes the video was what I was meaning for flashing using odin one click. Glad you got it fixed.

What are the issues doing this

With all of the really good roms now a days...that is..
1) Rooting...doing a back up of the stock rom..and then using that backup to return to stock without having to flash through Odin?
I'm guessing here...but..wouldn't you have to have disable any lag fix..going back to rfs..disable any voodoo..changing any oc/uc settings to stock..prior to doing this ?
2) Pulling a copy of the entire EFS folder from stock to your PC before doing any flashing new roms and then prior to un-rooting dropping it back in with root explorer...Won't this do the same thing without having to use a terminal or hex editor to have the original imei # and product code #? If #1 is a complete copy..would #2 be even needed ?
Just looking for a easy way to do this on a brand new phone

1) You should basically be doing this everytime you flash a new rom. I've flashed my cappy probly 50 times and everytime except once I went back to stock first. 0 issues -- the 1 time I didn't have a pc at hand and had to disable the lagfix then flash rom. But. going back to stock with Odin3 1 click is easy as long as you can get into download mode. Make sure you can get into dload mode before even attempting to flash a rom.
You only have to disable lagfix if you are not going back to stock prior to flashing a new rom (don't ever flash a rom over another rom without first disabling the lagfix or going back to stock).
2) I never backup my sdcard when flashing rom or master clear (I'm lazy I guess and don't want to wait for the files to transfer). I also keep update.zip as the clockwork recovery update.zip file. So after going back to stock, all I have to do is go into stock recovery and reinstall packages to install clockwork recovery, then I can flash the new rom and any add ons.

I guess I am wording this wrong...I know how to flash..and I know how to odin back...but I was curious if I could eliminate doing some of that by just using the back up of the stock rom that is rooted..I don't think that can be done with out flashing stock via Odin first (because of the kernels if not using a Captivate kernel )...but if you are using one... I haven't read anything about...cause I really don't know..
I am trying to see if all the EFS files are replaced with the correct #s without having to do and terminal work or use a hex editor..once the back up from Rom manager is put back on and used..Just trying to make a real easy check list about it..

I guess I got lucky cuz one day I was too lazy and away from the PC, but I have a couple of ROMs on my SD so I just flashed Assonance on top of Perception and worked fine.. that is the only time I did that, I always go back to stock with one click ODIN before flashing a new rom

the lagfixes may not have been installed...i think you have to manually install them with the roms you mentioned

[Q] Rooting confusion

My brother rooted his Captivate 6 months ago or more. He kept the stock ROM, and now would like to try a custom ROM. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember much about what he did. He said he downloaded a program, plugged in his phone, and it rooted him.
I assumed that I should be able to boot into recovery and flash a ROM from there. I looked up how to boot into recovery, and tried the 'hold down vol/up and power on' approach. Instead of a recovery menu, it goes directly to some kind of update screen with this text:
movi-check start..!!
... <lines removed>
install default apk files please wait
I've searched for these lines, and cannot find why this is coming up. I did find that this should have ended with a message that the install finished, but after leaving it for 10 minutes, it seemed to just reboot. Perhaps the message did come up, and then it immediately rebooted.
Does anyone know why the phone is in this state where there is no recovery menu? If I install ROM Manager and flash ClockworkMod is that likely to work and not cause harm?

Need a little more info... is it stock 2.1 or 2.2? If it's Froyo 2.2 then the stock recovery is tricky to get around if you're new to flashing or modding.

Thanks. It is stock 2.2.
I am not new to flashing, and I'm comfortable with adb and other tools. I'm just not familiar with the Samsung Captivate.
Is the screen that comes up with 'movi_check' the stock recovery? it appears to be automatically trying to update something.

Probably just be easier to use Odin to flash stock 2.1 and root and get recovery on it. Then you can flash any (2.2) ROM you want on it, or you could use Odin or Heimdall to flash Gingerbread onto it (recommended). There are tutorials all in the development section.

If its a newer build it wont like 2.1 (alot of newer builds bootloop with 2.1). If your captivate is one of the newer builds and has the 3e recovery here is a guide to get past it.
As to flashing Gb you will need GB bootloaders wich carries risk. Please READ on how too and risk that may happen. Its a small risk but you can hard brick the phone if you mess up bootloaders or if the booloader fails to flash.
Another option is flashing KB1 2.2 froyo and using Desing Gear's Cog 4.x.x kernel. You will have clock work mod. There's a ton of ways to do it most of wich are in the forums already so search and if you have doubts ask

It crossed my mind that newer builds wouldn't like 2.1, but I wasn't 100%, that's why I recommended going to GB. Just reading the instructions a few times and being prepared the risk is very low to hard brick. Just make sure to know exactly what you're doing when you choose which files for the primary and secondary boot loaders.

But said person is asking info on something as simple as rooting, Hence there are easier less evasive ways to get past 3e.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking about rooting, but about flashing and the recovery console. I'm an EVO user, and I just don't know the idiosyncrasies of the Captivate.
Am I correct that the messages I get when trying to go to recovery (starting with movi_check start) are normal, and that after those messages I should get the recovery console? If so, it seems to be stuck on the "install default apk files please wait" step, as this doesn't seem to complete.
I do see the steps on how to flash, and can follow them carefully, but since I am not getting the recovery console, I am not sure what might be wrong.

You can't flash a rom with stock recovery. You need clockwork mod wich can be achieve by using rom manager (needs root) or flashign with Odin a kernel that has it built in

Thanks for your help. I do understand I can't flash with stock recovery.
Both the 'Read BEFORE flashing' and the 'How to Install a custom ROM' guides instruct to install clockwork mod. I am aware that installing a new recovery needs to be done before flashing on probably any device.
I guess my primary confusion was whether the 'movi_check start' verbage is normal to see when I am trying to go to Recovery before installing Clockwork. Another google search finally found a hit that says it is normal to see this. I'm still not clear whether I should be concerned that it hangs on the "install default apk files" step.
Since it hangs, I don't ever get any kind of recovery menu, so it wasn't obvious to me that I was actually in the stock recovery.
Assuming this doesn't indicate any issues, I'll proceed with the instructions and all should be well.
