what happens is that when i install clockwork mod recovery in rom manager and try to make a backup, it goes back to the orignal recovery screen without any nandroid backup option, any fix
Two things that perhaps you have ommited:
1) Root you rom
2) Before pressing the option for the backup, you have to select "flash recovery" option in Clockword, that downloads the update.zip file which actually contains the custom recovery. Don't worry nothing is actually "flashed", just a download

I don't know if there's a new version of SamSet 2.0, I used it like 2 weeks ago and Clockwork didn't work for me either, I read somewhere the file system is somehow changed in Froyo. My solution was going back to Eclair until a FINAL Froyo is released.

I don't run FroYo, but in Eclair, there's a problem sometimes with clockwork not putting the proper update.zip in the root of your internal sdcard.
Easy workaround for me is to go to the clockwork folder and manaully copy the recovery-update.zip file to the root of the internal sdcard and rename it to update.zip.
Even then, once in a while it doesn't autorun, so all you do from the standard recovery is select to run the update.zip and then it starts up clockwork for you.

Ok I have rooted my captivate and un-installed at&t's crappy software and have clockwork recovery installed. 1st question is did Clockwork make a back-up already of my stock rom when I installed it and labeled it "update.zip"? That's what it seems like when i read the directions for it. I made a backup while i was in clockwork recovery just in case. So if i want to restore my phone back to normal do I start clockwork and install that "update.zip" file or the backup I made?
2nd question is if I want to un-root the phone do I just run the one-click unroot option and it brings everything back to normal? Or do i have reinstall all of at&t's crapware then unroot so things do not get messed up? If anyone can help this would be great. Thanks, Jesse

The update.zip is actually the Clockwork Mod Recovery, this is where you have the option to restore your backup, also know as Nandroid. You may need to click on reinstall packages more than once and you will then see the menu for ClockworkMod Recovery. You will find your backup there, just choose backup and restore, you can then choose restore, and you will see the backup you created. You can also restore your backup through the ROM Manager app. Only your Rom is backed up and all of your setting but not the kernel.
To totally restore should you ever use a mod that changes your kernel you should use Odin one click to restore to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 This will remove rooting and restore the AT&T bloatware and set the phone back to how it was out of the box, don't worry about rooting because once you restore your backup ROM you will regain root.
Thanks for the help! Is there a mac version of that odin software to get back to stock firmware? Also is the stock firmware built into that application or do I need to download it from somewhere and place it on my phone through the computer?

Then can I just flash whichever ROM I want? Will the ROM.zip update her to the correct modem/kernel at that time?
About using ODIN to restore - do I restore to the version she is on NOW or the version the phone originally shipped with, if different? And do I REALLY need to ODIN restore between ROMs or is a full wipe with CWM recovery enough?
Also read that CWM recovery doesn't work with Froyo at this time so can't do nandroid backups of Froyo ROMs?
Somebody catch me up... with my mt3g and mt4g I'm totally comfortable but this stuff is confusing me. I'm fairly comfortable with adb and already used it to sideload an app for her without rooting.

I'm pretty new at this too so I'll try to answer what I can.
Before you try anything, just make sure you can get into recovery and download mode.
Recovery:
- Hold Vol Up + Vol Down + Power button.
- from adb type reboot recovery
- from Rom Manager, select the Reboot to Recovery option.
Download
- Hold Vol Up + Vol Down and insert the usb cable. This works for me. Getting Odin to detect it can be a bit tricky. I usually start Odin first, then connect phone.
- from adb type reboot download (I think)

Not sure to be honest. The way I do it is that I install Rom Manager from the market first. It will ask you for root though. I like this way better as you can download and install the appropriate update.zip from the app. Rooting is very very easy. You can use this tool:

To be safe, I only try ROMs that I find in the Captivate Development sub forum. Most of them can be installed with CWM. Place the *.zip in the root of your internal SD card, reboot into CWM and select the install .zip from card option. Don't freak out.
There is also a way to flash roms from Odin but I've never tried it to be honest.

I believe it will restore to Samsung's stock version (I897UCJF6). Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Remember that this is only for the Captivate. It is safer to do a full restore whenever you are trying a new rom. The only exception, I think, is when you are upgrading versions (say, Darky's 7.8 to 8.0)

I always install it using ROM manager and it works fine.
Now, from what I've been reading and doing this week, I learned that apart from the ROM, you can also flash the kernel and model separately, in case you have specific needs. For instance, I flashed glitterball's kernel to overclock the phone. Just remember that 2.1 Roms need 2.1 kernels and modems, the same applies for 2.2. I'm currently trying out the TLJL3.
Remember that there are many ways to get to Rome. Also, use Titanium Backup to save your apps.
tl;dr:
1. Root.
2. Install CWM.

The ROM file would contain a kernel and a modem that will update her current kernel and modem. She can flash the kernel and modem of her choice after installing a custom ROM without breaking anything.
For Backing up use Titanium Backup, u need to ROOT your phone using directions in the earlier link provided.
When using custom ROMs it is always better to do a full wipe and flash to stock and master clear, i.e JF6 (using Odin one-click, or Odin with 3-button) or JH7 using the DG version.

Update.zip file once installed would load CWM from which you can install custom ROMs. Once you install custom ROMs, they are always rooted, and you needn't root again. It's a one time thing.

Thanks for your replies, guys, I'm actually very familiar with rooting and flashing. To clarify, I already know HOW to install a custom ROM, that's not the issue. I'm more concerned about compatibility once I start installing custom stuff, and about UNROOTING if I need to. It sounds like if all I'm doing is installing a custom recovery and then a custom ROM, I don't really need to worry about it.
I always opt for manual method through recovery as opposed to Rom Manager.
I would use SuperOneClick for the stock ROM as I've used it before without issues. Most likely I would use the update.zip method to install clockwork recovery so I can make a nandroid backup of her completely unrooted stock setup before proceeding.
I can get into stock recovery just fine but haven't tried download mode yet.
And yes I would ONLY flash ROMs for the Captivate specifically, unless someone manages to complete a port for Sense.
Sounds like your good to go then.
... and Odin is just the cheap and easy method to return the phone back to stock.
So if you ever need to give it back and need it restored this is the easiest method to do it. But I would suggest formatting the internal SD Card to make sure there are no remnants of you playing around with the phone.

I also heard that when using ODIN to restore to JF6 the OTA update to JH7 won't come back on its own?
lol yea.. but it doesn't matter unless you were wanting to keep it on "stock".
If your flashing or returning the phone your ok with keeping it on JF6.

How do I know what build number her phone is? I see references to build number 1010, but I don't know if this phone CAME WITH jh7 or if that was an update. I bought it used. If I try to restore to JF6 will that brick it??
EDIT - found it. She's a 1007. So if I used ODIN-3 to restore to JF6, how do I get back to JH7? Reading elsewhere it seems that a nandroid restore won't include the baseband?

Download the Mini Kies from here Download Center for SEG-I897ZKAATT.
Make sure the phone asks for USB on connection and select Kies mode when you plug into pc. Then open Mini Kies, it should recognize your phone and tell you an update is available. Follow the instructions from there.

About to flash her phone but saw something somewhere about backing up some *.nv file to preserve her IMEI# and stuff? Can you link me to a guide on that? Can not for the life of me remember where I saw that.

Im starting in the rooting process, im currently on Phoenix 2.5, before i flashed this rom i made a backup rom with Clockwork, i decided to restore to stock using clockwork, but it failed on me and i fear that my phone was bricked. I flashed again the phoenix rom, but i want to return to my stock rom, but i dont know why, i just want to flash darkys rom, but i dont know how to restore back to stock, if i use odin by default i have to do the master clear, please help me, i dont want to be stuck on this rom.

#1: Are you disabling Lagfix before flashing? If not, that may be your problem.

To answer your question - Gr8danes is right, you should be disabling your lagfix to restore your backup first.
Do this by going into your /sdcard/voodoo directory - Create a folder named "disable-lagfix" and reboot your phone. You will hear the robotic voice reconverting your file system - this will take about 3-5 minutes.
Then proceed with flashing your stock backup.
If that fails, you will have to use ODIN One Click to revert back to Eclair 2.1

So as long as the file system is restored (voodoo disabled) you CAN nandroid back to stock? Awesome.

no you do not need to master clear
also, the nandroid doesnt backup the KERNEL or the MODEM so you will likely get a bootloop after trying to restore your stock backup. in order to get back to stock, the best option is ODIN.

yeah, clockwork doesnt backup/restore the stock kernel+modem for you (one of its downfalls on this phone it seems). thats a manual process. the other option is to use the JH7 stock+rooted rom, thats designed for clockwork
But if i disable the lagfix, and do the restore using clockwork, it will fail? I MUST USE ODIN?? If i have to use ODIN, whats the point of doing a backup stock rom?

dont know of any links. i just know in my testing that is what happened.
if you look at a backup done in clockwork, there are the following files created:
cache.img
data.img
datadata.img
nandroid.md5
system.img
if you are flashing from a 2.2 rom to a 2.1 backup, you will get caught in a bootloop because you still have the kernel from 2.2, as cwm doesnt backup the kernel for our phones. if you flash a 2.1 kernel, via clockwork, or odin, your backup will boot up, but you will probably get FC's on a lot of things, because the modem is still a 2.2 modem, and causes instabilities. if you then flash a 2.1 modem, your backup will boot up without any issues. the best way to deal with this is to keep a 2.1 kernel and 2.1 modem CWM flashable zips on your sd card alongside your nandroid backup, flash the modem and kernel, then restore the backup.

It backs up apps and settings, but it isn't meant for restoring firmware versions.
If you just want to run Darky's then just flash it and skip the whole returning to stock step. It's really not necessary.

You should use the option in cwm recovery for WIPE DATA/SYSTEM RESTORE before you do, but yes.

Yes, u don't have to restore stock first before flashing another rom, but like said above, make sure to do a factory reset in cwm..
As for odin, you don't have to master clear either, you can use either odin one click or download a stock rom from samfirmware.com and use regular odin...

Here are the install instructions from the first post of the Darky's thread:
HOW TO FLASH
Place the ROM on the root of your SD card.
Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
Open ROM Manager (Downloadable from the market)
Choose "Install ROM from SD card". If after you flash and you have problems like force closes and you can't receive calls, wipe data/cache.
Let the phone sit for 5-10 minutes after booting.

That's pretty much how I've done it with all the ROMs I've used for the last couple of months, except that I boot to recovery mode to choose the ROM and start the install.

That's my opinion. The install script formats and deletes everything anyway, so going back to stock is superfluous. Some people disagree, but as per my other post, the Darky's instructions say nothing about flashing stock.
I went a couple of months without going back to stock and in that time I flashed various versions of Cognition, Darky's, di11igaf, Assonance, Perception, Axura, Phoenix, Doc's, Serendipity and probably others I've forgotten. I only flashed stock the other day because I sent my phone back to Samsung to see if I can get one with working GPS.
I am having an issue with Rom Manager Premium. It won't let me backup my current ROM. I select the option and it just asks me for a filename then reboots the phone into recovery mode. I check my SD card for a backup file and nothing gets created... What gives?
I've tried googling my problem, but people say to select the "Flash Alternate Recovery" option, but it's greyed out for me. And I have the latest version of Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.2
I am running an ATT Captivate SGH-I897 with the leaked 2.2 froyo rom on the Rogers network in Canada.

I would suggest to go into recovery then advanced I believe then choose backup. Then if you go back into rom manager you will see a backup. Rom manager is just doing the same function. I usually just use the backup or restore from recovery menu anyways and I have rom manager premium also.

I think I have this same issue with my ROM Manager now backing up. I don't have the premium version. But my phone just reboots into Recovery whenever I select "Backup Current ROM" from the ROM Manager. Then when I go back to ROM Manager and select "Manage and Restore Backups", nothing happens.
So the workaround is confusing for me.
Select "Reboot into Recovery" using the ROM Manager to go into recovery mode? I have no idea where this advanced menu is either.
I'm just a newbie to ROM Manager and trying to figure out where to see my backups of my ROM....if they even exist.

Yes I did that first step. There is a similar post with another fix and an update.zip file attached. I tried that but it froze up during the backup. I think I ran out of space on my internal SD card. I'm not sure how much space I need to do a backup but I only have about 1200MB left on my internal. I'm trying to clear things out. My external 4Gb card is nearly maxed as well. I really want to get a 32Gb external soon.
my clockwork backups are right around 750mb

I found out what the problem was... the leaked 2.2 froyo rom I'm running uses the <3e> recovery which I guess is not compatable with ClockworkMod. When I try to reinstall packages it gives me a verification failed message.
So I guess I need to flash a different kernel, or find another workaround. What was the update.zip workaround mentioned before? Could you please post a link?

the update.zip will not work for you if you are on the leaked 2.2 with 3e recovery.
you will need to find a kernel that allows the unsigned zips or 2e recovery...they are in these forums, i will try to find a link
