[Q] Can I make my own image for restoring with odin?

I've searched the forums but haven't been able to find an answer to this question. I've found how to backup and such with titanium and clockwork but what I haven't been able to figure out is if there is a way to make an exact image of my phone as is, that could be restored with something like odin. I've backed up using clockwork and used the on phone restore process, but what if that doesn't work Is it possible to use that backup somehow to restore my phone with odin? Are there instructions for doing this?
I know I can download a ROM and restore using odin, but I would like to be able to restore to my own rom. I have a perfectly working GPS etc. on my phone as is and before trying the Froyo release I would like to make sure I can bring it back exactly to where it is now if things go bad.

I'm not sure if you can, but doing a nandroid backup, copying it to your computer, copying back and restoring with rom manager if things go sour?

I'm terribly sorry to ask this, as it probably has been answered previously, but I've looked all over the internet on how to back up my Captivate, with no success. So I dreadfully ask, how do I back up my data so I can upgrade to JI6 afterward?

lol...just 5 mins back i was searching for the same thing and i rooted to cognition 2.2beta7........well u must be rooted....u can backup everything by titanum backup(go to backup/restore and there u can backup all/selected stuff)....also download rom manager and then click on flash clockwordmod......

Root your device.
Install ClockworkMod, then go into CWM and download the recovery ROM for your device.
Click back up current ROM.
Be aware, both of you, that CWM is currently unable to extract boot.img so if you upgrade from Eclair to the leaked Froyo, you will need Windows/Odin to restore your device. Make sure you have in your hand Odin AND the correct Captivate factory Eclair image before you attempt to upgrade to the leaked Froyo.

oh!!!
well i do have the odin by the name -- I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 -- with me??is this what i should be having???
also since now i am on cog2.2beta7, i tried restoring through titanium but i cant seem to find my backups!!!! also when i mounted the sd card it shows the clockworkmod folder to be of 454mb....it has a backup folder with a few stuff in it.....
so if i have to restore ill have to use odin or cant i just boot into clockword recovery an do a backup???
sorry am still a noob!

You will need Odin that you have to flash back to stock JF6. If you want to use your backup from Clockwork of your current setup you must be running 2.2 with the 2e kernel. Clockwork backs up your ROM not your kernel.

Sorry if this is a repeat, im very new to Android and a little confused on backups.
I rooted and then did this after downloading clockwork/rom manager:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this considered a Nandroid backup? Is there anything else I need to do as far as backups or is this the best method?
This will allow me to go back to my stock Rom at any point , is that correct?
Then I should use Titanium Backup for data/apps/settings?

So my friend wanted to root his captivate and wanted to flash the spaceman ROM so heres what hes done so far
1.He used Z4root and perma rooted his phone.
2. Downloaded ROM manager and flashed clock work recovery
3. He did a backup and downloaded the ROM
4. He went into recovery and cleared cache factory and data.
5. Tryed to flash the ROM
6. It didnt work....
7. Restored the Backup
8. His phone wont download anything
9. He unroots with Z4root
10. Still nothing phone wont download stuff from market so he re roots with Z4
11. I Write up this thread

Did we miss something?
If possible can we get a link to step by step instructions on how to root and flash ROMs

After rooting, did the SuperUser App appear in the app drawer?, if so, the phone was rooted and the steps you took appear fine to flash the ROM. Don't know what you mean by it didn't work (error msgs or what?) Also, don't know what or how you're trying to download something. Perhaps if you can provide more information, we can help

Also I would have him Odin 1-click back to stock and start over.
Plus in the future please post what the error was as it would help determine your next troubleshooting steps better.

Yes superuser did appear in the app drawer.
When we tryed to flash it said operation aborted i dont know why.
And he is trying to download apps. from the market and its not working lol

Yup.. I'd flash back to stock then re-root. Sounds like something went screwy when you attempted to flash the ROM.

We restored the back up before attempting to flash the rom so would that be okay instead of flashing back to stock?
Also is there a way to back up all the apps so if do flash back to stock we can get them back instead of re downloading everything again?

[Q] ODIN, Download Mode, JH7, Modems, Kernels... somebody school me

I've searched and read FAQs a lot already. I read the threads that XDA suggested before posting this.
I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm a little fuzzy. Want to root my gf's AT&T Captivate (JH7) and install Froyo for her but still a little unclear on exactly how everything fits together.
From what I've gathered so far I can use the update.zip method to install Clockwork Recovery and make a nandroid backup of her current configuration without even rooting it, right?
Then can I just flash whichever ROM I want? Will the ROM.zip update her to the correct modem/kernel at that time?
About using ODIN to restore - do I restore to the version she is on NOW or the version the phone originally shipped with, if different? And do I REALLY need to ODIN restore between ROMs or is a full wipe with CWM recovery enough?
Also read that CWM recovery doesn't work with Froyo at this time so can't do nandroid backups of Froyo ROMs?
Somebody catch me up... with my mt3g and mt4g I'm totally comfortable but this stuff is confusing me. I'm fairly comfortable with adb and already used it to sideload an app for her without rooting.

I'm pretty new at this too so I'll try to answer what I can.
Before you try anything, just make sure you can get into recovery and download mode.
Recovery:
- Hold Vol Up + Vol Down + Power button.
- from adb type reboot recovery
- from Rom Manager, select the Reboot to Recovery option.
Download
- Hold Vol Up + Vol Down and insert the usb cable. This works for me. Getting Odin to detect it can be a bit tricky. I usually start Odin first, then connect phone.
- from adb type reboot download (I think)

Not sure to be honest. The way I do it is that I install Rom Manager from the market first. It will ask you for root though. I like this way better as you can download and install the appropriate update.zip from the app. Rooting is very very easy. You can use this tool:

To be safe, I only try ROMs that I find in the Captivate Development sub forum. Most of them can be installed with CWM. Place the *.zip in the root of your internal SD card, reboot into CWM and select the install .zip from card option. Don't freak out.
There is also a way to flash roms from Odin but I've never tried it to be honest.

I believe it will restore to Samsung's stock version (I897UCJF6). Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Remember that this is only for the Captivate. It is safer to do a full restore whenever you are trying a new rom. The only exception, I think, is when you are upgrading versions (say, Darky's 7.8 to 8.0)

I always install it using ROM manager and it works fine.
Now, from what I've been reading and doing this week, I learned that apart from the ROM, you can also flash the kernel and model separately, in case you have specific needs. For instance, I flashed glitterball's kernel to overclock the phone. Just remember that 2.1 Roms need 2.1 kernels and modems, the same applies for 2.2. I'm currently trying out the TLJL3.
Remember that there are many ways to get to Rome. Also, use Titanium Backup to save your apps.
tl;dr:
1. Root.
2. Install CWM.
3. Verify that you can access recovery and download mode.
4. Download ROM (CWM .zip installable).
5. Read read read.

The ROM file would contain a kernel and a modem that will update her current kernel and modem. She can flash the kernel and modem of her choice after installing a custom ROM without breaking anything.
For Backing up use Titanium Backup, u need to ROOT your phone using directions in the earlier link provided.
When using custom ROMs it is always better to do a full wipe and flash to stock and master clear, i.e JF6 (using Odin one-click, or Odin with 3-button) or JH7 using the DG version.

Update.zip file once installed would load CWM from which you can install custom ROMs. Once you install custom ROMs, they are always rooted, and you needn't root again. It's a one time thing.

Thanks for your replies, guys, I'm actually very familiar with rooting and flashing. To clarify, I already know HOW to install a custom ROM, that's not the issue. I'm more concerned about compatibility once I start installing custom stuff, and about UNROOTING if I need to. It sounds like if all I'm doing is installing a custom recovery and then a custom ROM, I don't really need to worry about it.
I always opt for manual method through recovery as opposed to Rom Manager.
I would use SuperOneClick for the stock ROM as I've used it before without issues. Most likely I would use the update.zip method to install clockwork recovery so I can make a nandroid backup of her completely unrooted stock setup before proceeding.
I can get into stock recovery just fine but haven't tried download mode yet.
And yes I would ONLY flash ROMs for the Captivate specifically, unless someone manages to complete a port for Sense.

Sounds like your good to go then.
... and Odin is just the cheap and easy method to return the phone back to stock.
So if you ever need to give it back and need it restored this is the easiest method to do it. But I would suggest formatting the internal SD Card to make sure there are no remnants of you playing around with the phone.

I also heard that when using ODIN to restore to JF6 the OTA update to JH7 won't come back on its own?

lol yea.. but it doesn't matter unless you were wanting to keep it on "stock".
If your flashing or returning the phone your ok with keeping it on JF6.

How do I know what build number her phone is? I see references to build number 1010, but I don't know if this phone CAME WITH jh7 or if that was an update. I bought it used. If I try to restore to JF6 will that brick it??
EDIT - found it. She's a 1007. So if I used ODIN-3 to restore to JF6, how do I get back to JH7? Reading elsewhere it seems that a nandroid restore won't include the baseband?

Download the Mini Kies from here Download Center for SEG-I897ZKAATT.
Make sure the phone asks for USB on connection and select Kies mode when you plug into pc. Then open Mini Kies, it should recognize your phone and tell you an update is available. Follow the instructions from there.

About to flash her phone but saw something somewhere about backing up some *.nv file to preserve her IMEI# and stuff? Can you link me to a guide on that? Can not for the life of me remember where I saw that.

ROM flashing instructions for i896

I read as much as I can about installation of a custom ROM. I think I'm confident enough to do it now, but I just want someone to review these steps before I start.
I have a Rogers I896 currently running the stock froyo that I upgraded via Kies with a build 10.10.
Because this is on a build 10.10 I can't follow the steps vertabim with the guide in the android development forum.
1. Root with SuperOneClick
2. Titanium Backup
3. Use Odin3 v1.7 or later to restore to stock with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042 and the 512 pit file. (I understand this is unnecessary as I'm already stock, but in case I need to revert back to stock from a custom ROM, this is what I'll do)
4. Reroot with SuperOneClick
5. Get the ROM and put it in the root of the phone
6. Download ROM Manager and install Clockwork Recovery
7. Boot into recovery and install zip from SD card and choose the zip file that I downloaded.
8. Titanium Backup to restore
Please let me know if I'm missing something. I think I read something about Nandroid backup somewhere in the forums. I'm not exactly sure what that is and it didn't really say that in the guide. Should I do that and how do I perform that?
I'm thinking about installing either Paragon, Serendipity, or di11i. Perhaps someone can also maybe list some differences, issues, pros and cons about these ROMs.

your steps are good enough for you to flash to a new rom.

You may have trouble with installing Clockwork. If you do, follow this link.
Also, once you reboot into clockwork, remember to do a backup of your current ROM and move it and your TiBu backups to your HD. Clearing your cache before you install your new ROM isn't a bad idea either

I do not think "clear cache" is necessary when you install a new rom, since most of rom will format the related partitions first. You can clear the dalvik cache in the cwm.
A master clear is recommended since it will reset your phone to factory default and delete all the data in your built-in sdcard.

It doesn't hurt AFAIK. I do notice after restoring apps with TiBu some apps require you to clear their cache in order to work properly, so I do it as a preventative measure.
Another tip: do NOT restore all system data with TiBu after you flash!

I started on Rogers stock 2.2.
Used superoneclick to root. Installed rom manager. Used a script to modify my recovery 3e file. Rebooted into recovery. Flashed cwm. Installed my custom rom.

Hey I don’t mean to hijack/bump the thread but I’ve got an I896 which I’m attempting to flash a custom ROM onto, but I’m a complete phone newbie and could use some assistance when it comes to clarifying some instructions. This thread seemed to be the most “laid out” instruction guide for the I896 which I could find.
Currently my phone is running 2.2 Froyo / I896UXJL1 / Kernel 2.6.32.9 which I got via Kies early January when the update was released by Rogers.
I downloaded SuperOneClick 1.7 and rooted it without problems, but that’s as far as I’m clear/comfortable.
1. Do I need to use Odin (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042) to restore to stock? Since I’m on the default Rogers technically that is already stock, no? Can I simply continue on from where I am?
a. If I don’t need to use Odin, do I need to make a backup with titanium?
2. Does step 6 of the OP’s list simply involve hitting the “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery” option in ROM Manager v3.0.1.0?
3. After that is it simply a matter of downloading my ROM of choice (Serendipity 5.12) and putting the .zip into my root folder, booting into recovery via the “Reboot into Recovery” option in ROM Manager, and then selecting to install the ROM .zip file?
4. Is my above three points everything I need to know or is there anything else I should know/be considered?
Also, when rooting I simply turned USB debugging on, ran the two .exe’s in order and then hit root after plugging in my phone. Was I supposed to go into download mode or anything or is that only for other modes of rooting (I have superuser installed and titanium backup was able to get root access so I assume my phone rooted properly).
That being said, I’ve read a ton of threads and a ton of stickies but things tend to seem either old/outdated or focusing on the AT&T i897, with there being limited information on a newbie friendly “explain all” way from A to B for the i896, unless I missed it. Some mention rooting with X, and using path ABC to root/flash a custom rom, and others mention rooting with Z and using patch DEF to do the same; all of which have left me feeling uneasy about flashing. ><
I'd be more then happy to provide any information in which I may have left out, and would appreciate any help I can get as I'm more then enthusiastic about flashing my first custom ROM but would like have the knowledge to do it right instead of being left with a brick. Yes, I know it seems almost all "bricked" captivates are unbrickable, though I would prefer to avoid that road at all costs either way haha.

I'm curious to know why not to restore system data?
Is "missing apps with data" ok to restore?

Restoring system data messes things up. Restore "missing apps with data" only. no system data.

If you restore system+data your home screen will fill up with force closes faster than you can clear them out, I know this Because I did it...twice, this is where my aww.W.T.F? sig came from. Don't panic if this noobish brain fart happens to you, just re-flash the rom and only restore missing apps+data as studacris said and enjoy.
