I'm from Singapore, and currently using Darky's v10.1 ROM. I recently flashed ZSJPG as my modem, but it wasn't as good as my previous one, which i vividly remember it as XXJVO (i have no idea what was my previous modem, since i didn't change anything except flashing Ultimate's ROM -> Darky's ROM), but anyhow i remember it as XXJVO.
Anyone from Singapore/Malaysia could advice me on which modem to choose right now which would reduce my battery consumption rate?
Hey, currently am in the same boat living in Singapore for work and just started using Darky's v10.1 from last weekend. Been doing the modem flash dance for awhile to try to reduce my battery power and get more consistent H/3G access when mobile. I only started changing modems in Darky's v9.5 and am going to start again. I basically ended up on JPP but from the threads I see a lot of recommendations for ZSJPE and ZSJPG.
I tried a number of modems based on the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ostcount=11945
Based on this (also lots of Google searches), this is the order I tried.
- XXJPY (which was default on v9.5. This was ok but wasn't sure if this was applicable to Asia)
- ZSJPE
- ZSJPG
- JPP (JPP replaced XXJPY - so this is what I settled on with v9.5)
I rechecked the threads again today so am thinking of trying ZSJPD, JP6 as well as JPP under Darky's. I heard good things about ZSJPE (and ZSJPG) but I had spotty internet reception where I traveled so settled with JPP.
Currently, my average battery usage is 22-24 hours but the first 12 hours (my daily usage of H/3G surfing during commute and lunch, music during my commute to and from work, and occasionally checking email) I get to about 30%. I leave my phone overnight to drain (which drains to about 5%) and swap out to new battery.
Am also interested in what other people in Singapore are using as well (btw, am on Starhub). Would be good to compare notes.
Get Perkas File Stash from the market, you can download modems straight to your phone for flashing. You should be able to find one that suits, I know that it has JPY, JPE, JPG, JPP, JVO and many more
Sorry I can't help you as I'm not in Singapore

I want to know the same thing and also, if the official Kies JM1 firmware update is the same with the one from samsung-firm ?
I'm using JM5 now, updated from stock via samsung firmwares and it seems to be a lot faster with the lag fix.
I found JM5 was better - especially for memory leaks. Startup on JM5 i have around 160mb free, but with JH1, only 130mb, and it drops to 99mb pretty quickly even after closing apps with ATK.
Without a lag fix, there was still lag.
The CSC only has 6 localities, 4 of them are chinese, and only UK and USA, where as JM5 has loads more including Australia
I found wifi and 3G/HSDPA stronger on the JM5 radio as well. Had major issues with wifi dropping out similar to JF3 with JH1. GPS was ok, but not on Cell triangulation. JM5 was much more accurate.
I also had issues flashing back to JM5 after flashing JH1. I worked out that if I had partition checked, and included the 512 PIT file, odin just hung. Flashing back to JM5 without these worked fine.
There's certainly nothing new in it, Quadrant scores have been lower than the base JM5 as well (from another thread), so if you're on JM5, just stick with it.
Hope this helps.
My phone is from Singapore. So is there a problem for me to flash jm5 which is an euro version? Thx. Noob here.
JM6 running awesome here! I found it better than JM5.. Haven't used JH1 due to poor reviews..
I flash from jg4 no problem at all, gps is way better in jm5

JH1 only has English UK/US, Korean and 3 chinese locales.
But it is very smooth and bug free. It doesn't contain the default number app when you try to add a default number for multiple contacts (Reason for my choice of JH1 over JM5.)
JH1 contains a native task manager which shows my memory over 175MB ram after a day use, after a reboot or "fast reboot" app another good 20-30MB is freed.
I am using the JM5 modem file though as I find the GPS is stronger and somewhat usable for walks (after changing the gps.conf to use 4 uk pool time servers as I am in London, I find this fix assists the picking up of signals ie more sats, faster locks.) JM5 also picks up the signals stronger and holds on to them for longer.
JM5 PDA was a little jumpy at times for me and the memory showed less.
Both tested after OneClickLagFix. GPS were both tested from the same spot outside my flat window (after giving both modem files a 5 mins warm up time through LbsTestMode Get Position Test.)
Anyone know of a good firmware with better GPS than JM5 (Modem file is XXJM3)?

I am using JH1
I am from Malaysia, currently using I9000ZSJH1 with mimo lag fix quarant 1.4k but phone still lagging, I dont think it's firmware tho mayb it's something wrong with my device or external sd card?
Read some post before that one said I9000XWJM5 with CSC I9000XWJM2 is the best. Any issue to use this mix different firmware? Is that ok to use Europe firmware as I am staying in Malaysia?
I am going to try this out then apply Tayutama update.zip lag fix. Wonder will it solve my current lag issue.
Hope to get more advice or oppinions on this. thank you
I'm just wondering if someone can list any ROMs or flashing methods/guides that work on Bell I9000M phones without losing the 850mhz band.
I'd really like to give Tayutama's SuperLite version a go (for example), but I need the 850mhz band; is it safe? If not is there something we can do to re-enable it without going back to a stock ROM?
I've looked around the forum and not seen any clear answer to this.
Input is appreciated!
I second this.. But im thinking ill be disappointed as ive read a few places that the bell galaxy s cant be flashed with the i9000 roms out there without minor to major issues
i believe if you flash only the pda and leave jh2 modem and jh2 csc. you can flash any of the newer roms 2.1 eclair.. but havent tried it myself.. my one exerience with jm7 when i didnt do this and only kept the csc i lost my 850 mhz.

Does it have to be Eclair ROMs only?
I just spent the night trying various ones and got squat. I did find this post here (forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8299301&postcount=18) but it seems to be older and references the JH2 files, and not necessarily a specific ROM.
If I find one that works, I'll post it here.
For now, I'm heading back down to 2.1 stock version (ugh).
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=site:+xda-developers.com+"i9000m"+froyo
I would also like to know as well... I am quite interested in trying Darky's Froyo rom
(Apparently it is safe, will probably give it a shot today at some point)
if you flash only the pda of a rom, and the jh2 modem/csc files, know that you may experience battery drain issues because they do not match. i flashed jpk with jh2 modem/csc for few days and the battery drain was insane. only fix was to flash the full jpk, then re-enable all the bands.
Would love to get an answer for this as well.
Phone crashed on first day from the store. Touchwiz issue had to wipe. So i dont see the down side to flashing when the stock can crash too.
And no gps which is such a letdown. Cant lock location ever.

Okay here are some straight facts - you can flash any of the new roms on a Bell SGS. You need the Bell version of the modem to maintain 850 - it works with 2.2 - it may or may not not be fully optimized for 2.2 but it works just as well as it does on 2.1. It just doesn't matter that much in the grans scheme of things.
All other so-called issues with battery drain, SD card, bricking, weird behavour, etc. are not caused by the ROMs either but rather the execution of underlying apps - usually optimization and timing related issues - if you have a problem it is most likely software related - i.e the app has not been optimized under FROYO.
Seriously, this is not rocket science. You cannot permanently brick your phone from FROYO - it is impossible.
If you want to successfully implement Froyo but are skeptical, pick a ROM, flash the Bell modem and then try it out for a week or two BEFORE dumping a bunch of new apps on it. Then decide if you want to keep it - which you will. Then start finding apps that are Froyo optimized and you will have no issues. Seriously.

I didn't flash a bell specific modem. I used the one that came packaged in Docs JPM froyo. Works perfect with no loss of any 850mhz 3G band.
Good job and clarification - as long as the modem supports 850 it does not need to be Bell.
First off for those that think you have WCDMA 850 working after a rom flash designed for another region, make sure you actually try and run only the WCDMA 850 band to see if you actually have it. If your not running on Bell and your network doesn't have WCDMA 850 available to you then you can't check and it won't matter. Any rom designed for a region that doesn't use WCDMA 850 will not give you WCDMA 850 and why should it.
Install whatever rom you want and simply flash your JH2 modem to get your WCDMA 850 back. After the modem flash make sure you put your phone into automatic mode and select all to refresh the modem band availability.
If your able to flash your modem AND your csc you might even get your product code back.... maybe.
For Bell users it would be nice to have a Froyo modem that will support WCDMA 1900 and 850. The 2.1 JH2 works fine though with Froyo.

Are you sure that you have the WCDMA 850 band functional with the JPM modem? Didn't work for me. Are you on Bell's network?
So is there a way to get the gps working? I can wait on Froyo but the GPS issue is terrible. Also any way to do a true backup of the phone. like an image.

No, im not on bells network. I am on rogers network. Rogers in my area only has 850mhz 3G in this area. I have 3G service and in service mode it says WCDMA 850 Band 5. It works. Its also working on the girlfriends.

As for the GPS its a bit better but still sucks.
I've never had a GPS problem so I can't tell you if its an issue with the hardware/software/location/interference, etc. Since day 1 (three months ago) I have had no issues locking satellites to 10m accuracy, regardless of firmware. Actually the only time I had an issue was on Osoyoos lake but I suspect that may have had more to do with the proximity to the border crossing.

Getting a fix isn't the issue. Its active tracking.
Active tracking has been a-o-k the whole time as well which I thought was implied by using the "locking to 10m accuracy" terminology.
I realize this is probably a very frequently brought up topic, but given that I have certain specific requirements, I hope it merits not being redundant.
I'm fed up waiting on Samsung to issue out 2.2 and so I have finally decided to try ROMing it. The help that I need is determining which of 3 ROMs: Darky 7.7, Cognition 9.5/9.9, and Perception 10(.1). These all seem to be top mentioned ROMs for the Captivate. I watched the comparison video between 9.5 and 10 and am more inclined to go with 10.
However, each ROM has easily around 100 pages minimum and I've lost 2 hours of sleep trying to just keep up with Perception 10 as it is trying to find out if it will still allow me to do the things I require.
What I need is the following:
GPS Working (I believe Cognition 9.9 states GPS does not work)
Bluetooth Voice Dial/Control (I have a BlueAnt T1 which I love, but I have been told that only 2.2 allows full voice control via BT - If I am wrong, please correct me)
Froyo's Wifi Hotspotting feature would also be nice.
Other than the notice about GPS issue on Cog 9.9, I couldn't find anything to clearly confirm both the GPS and BT requirements. I know Per 10 is running 2.2.1, so that is something else that appeals to me.
As always, I greatly appreciate any help I can get from XDA. As long as the winter weather doesn't take out the power, I look forward to joining the Froyo ranks later today.
EDIT: I should also throw on that minimal risk of battery problems and/or signal/call quality issues would be great as well. And that a working (or fixable) Barcode Scanner is needed. My wallet lives off of Google Shopper these days.
Well I haven't personally used Perception or Cognition. However, I am running Darky's 8.0 with hardcore's Speedmod k12i kernel, JL3 modem and DXJPA wifi, and I haven't had any issues with GPS, mobile hotspot, signal/call quality or Barcode Scanner. I also get about 3-4 days of battery life on a single charge with light usage. Your experience may differ, but I thought I'd offer up mine in case it helps.

I'm really not that familiar with Dark's ROM, but Perception and Cognition I think I know enough to tell you a bit about them. Perception is built off of the i9000 and Cognition is built from the Captivate. only problem I've had with Perception was that the i9000 modems don't seem to be fully compatible on the U.S. Captivate and you will intermittently lose signal for short periods of time, sometimes to the point where you will have to reboot. Both builds are by DesignGears and I really do like his designs. Cognition is most likely more stable and easier for a first time flasher. Again, this is said with ignorance of Darky's ROM. You can find change logs and problems within the first few posts on the first pages of official ROM threads. There you can find out all you need. Just PM the dev if you have questions and I'm sure they will be able to answer you.

I would agree with this, and I'd just like to add that I'm using Cognition 2.3b8 (not sure where you're getting 9.8/9.9 from) and it's very stable and easy for a first-time flasher.
One queston for Jmurph, with the Perception rom, would it be as simple as flashing a new modem (TLJL3 for example) which works well on AT&T?
One of the things about Darky's ROM that scared me away was that people seemed to have to mix and match kernels and modems to get one they liked. Designgears' rom seemed to work really well for most people out of the box, as it were. And I found that it's fantastic. Yesterday I decided to flash the TLJL3 modem (but I just read on the changelog that Designgears included it in 2.3b8 so it's a moot point). I've been having good battery life though I just yesterday bump charged it and deleted the battery stats. I expect battery life to get even better. I don't use Bluetooth for more than handsfree so I can't speak to that, however, I would assume that the rom would do anything that Froyo would be able to do.
In fact, on Saturday, I was able to use my phone as a wifi hotspot without any problems.

You mix and match kernels and modems on any ROM to get one you like. Modem is your connection, some might run faster than others, and lots of things can influence that. Location, available bands at your location, etc etc. Kernels are just masses of hardware drivers, so obviously different kernels fit different peoples needs. Some people like the overclock thing, some people don't. Some people want a kernel optomized for speed, some want a kernel optomized for stability or battery life. No matter what ROM you go with, some Modems might work better for you than others, and the kernel is all about preference.
Thanks everyone. I realize my mistake with the GPS part. I was accidentally referring to the Percepion 9.5 (build 99) post that said that GPS was disabled. It was late and I had come back from a jaunt in a lovely snow storm, so my brain was kinda blahhhed.
So now I'm just down to Cog vs Per. From what I skimmed last night, Perception is designed for the Captivate. In fact some guy is starting a ROM review for the Captivate with MobileTechVideos and was comparing 9.5 and 10.
I know 10 has the latest swype keyboard installed, so that is another point in its favor. Any other suggestions? Inputs?
Hi,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S I9000
I am in Australia on the Optus network.
Can someone please advice of the best radio to use?
All my specs are in my signature.
How can i tell what I have and if there is a better radio how do i update it?
Thanks
Is there anyone who can help answer my question?????
Please
It's pretty difficult to quantitatively measure modem performance with the SGS. Unfortunately, most posts you would get about this will be highly subjective. I'm with Optus in Sydney and in my tests, I've found that the JVE modem is really good. Low battery consumption, fairly reliable 3G connection and fast GPS.
Others have reported JL2 is the fastest for 3G speeds, others still claim JPE gives the best reception. I've tried both and they're both good, I have no major complaints about either of them. Most recently I tried JQ1 and found the GPS really quick and accurate. 3G seemed to be quick and reliable, but I think signal strength reported wasn't as strong as some other modems. Battery life seemed good, but I think JVE was slightly better (possibly due to signal strength?)
Just test and compare for yourself. My shortlist would be:
JVE, JPE, JQ1, JPY, JL2
Further to that list, JPG seemed good, but it used to report my GPS position inaccurately when I briefly trialled it.
Today I had major trouble with JQ1 getting to download anything from the web, so switched to JVE and had some similar trouble. I'm guessing it's the network in my area. I might try JL2 again, as it's been a while and Whirlpool users report it as one of the fastest for download/upload speeds on the Virgin/Optus network, but I don't want to sacrifice GPS performance either. JL2 is a little older though and I've favoured sticking to more recent modems because I figure that Samsung are likely to improve battery consumption/reception/reliability rather than go backwards (although, never say never...)
Does that help?
Radio - Samsung Galaxy S I9000
Thanks for the reply...
It has helped a little but still am unclear.
How do I flash just the radio?
Where do i find it to flash it?
I find connectivity to be pretty good, but battery life sucks....
I also find that my current rom doesn't like even making calls in 2G, when 3G is not available...
Any thoughts...please

Wondering if you have any further suggestions of modems on ICS accessing the Optus network?
I'm currently running JVT after switching from JW4 - JW4 was good for battery but the call quality and GPS were poor. Too early for me to comment on JVT but I'm looking for suggestions of what modem to try next if this one doesn't make the grade...
So I'm fortunate enough to have a captivate that has issues with dropping signal randomly throughout the day (usually no more than once a day, but still...). I see there is some new commotion with 2.3.4 ROMs coming out, but I can't remember if the ROM wipes the modem or not and all that. Anwyay:
What's the best modem to use if you have a phone which has the signal drop issue? And for bonus credit, what ROM to pair that with. I'm running GR-11 at the moment.
They all include a modem. As for which modem/rom will be the best, you really have to test for yourself.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
Thanks - I'll try out one of the newer ROMs and see if the included modem is better or worse and then go from there.
So I flashed 2.3.4 and now have no cell data.......
i was having the same problem and for2ndtwin told me to do this and it fixed me right up.

i also restarted my phone and voila it seems everything is working again
For 2.3.4, jjjv5, xxjvr and bvjjw2 all work pretty good for me. You can find CWM3 flashable for those modems by searching the forums.
I've been having really good success with Dlev 5.0 rom and kc1 modem that comes with it. as the someone else has already stated it's a matter of trial and error. downloading faster fix might help you boost your signal. Once you do you might also flash this. it changes the North America pool to a more specific U.S. pool.
just and idea.
