[Q] HTC Sense trouble - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so, i have a rooted HTC Hero on Sprint, and i was a bit curious: after downloading Titanium Backup, i started to wonder what would happen if i uninstalled HTC Sense. would it go back to the default Android UI and free up space on my phone. so, i backed up HTC Sense and proceeded to uninstall Sense. it didn't work. now, after trying to restore both the app and the app + data, and restarting the phone, i am stuck at the "Now" screen during start up and it won't go any farther.
is there a way to sideload HTC Sense back onto the phone through use of a computer? and if so, how?

Try this:
1. Download a rom on a pc. Cm7 will work for this demo.
2. Pull out your sd card from your phone and transfer the rom to it from your pc.
3. Put your sd card back in and boot into recovery. Generally, hold home key down and press power. Once the HTC screen pops up, release the power key only. Hold home until your recovery screen comes up.
4. Wipe data, dalvik, and cache.
5. Flash the rom.
6. Reboot once it is finished.
7. If that works, you will need to flash gapps, but we will worry about that later.

alright, got to step 3, but when i enter recovery mode, it asks me if i want to "Delete all user data? <action> yes <send> no" then, regardless of what i choose, it resets the device, which brings me back to the "Now" screen and it proceedes to freeze

thats not reovery power back of and make sure u press home+power

add the word 'ONLY' in there between 'u' and 'press'

Sometimes it's easier to just hold power+volume down. Once in hboot hit the home button to go to recovery.

Help with nandroid restore

Hello, just installed the leaked sprint hero 2.1 rom on my phone. The rom works okay except that I have too restart my phone every time someone calls me or I try to call someone. This is rather annoying and now I would like to revert back to 1.5. I created a backup with nandroid but I can't seem to restore it properly. I have installed fastboot and followed the directions on how to use it with nandroid but fastboot.exe doesn't execute because it can't find the adbwinapi.dll file. I have this file (along with fastboot) both in my System32 directory and in the android-sdk/tools directory so I don't knowwhy fastboot can't find it. Is there any other way to restore with nandroid?

you cant boot into recovery? (home+power)
yes I believe I have the recovery screen with the androids on skateboards and it just gives me the option to clear all data.

hmm the recovery screen has alot more than that....your 100% positive your holding the home button and then pressing power (while keeping home pressed in)
positive i wish i had more options. Also, my computer won't even recognize that my phone is plugged in when I'm in recovery mode or the bootloader.

Clear data sounds like the bootloader.
Try this. Power off the phone. Hold down the HOME button. While holding the HOME button, press the POWER button. Wait for the phone to vibrate, then release the HOME button.
That should boot straight into recovery (if recovery is installed).
I think if you hold the home button too long, I think it will go into the bootloader menu.

Tried that and got picture of my phone with a little hazard symbol maybe this means I need to install recovery mode? and how would I go about doing that?
hmm i know when i hold home and end key for short second it asks me to clear all data or end ... wat i do is hold home + end for a long time until the ra pops up
This sounds like a rooted phone without a Recovery Image flashed on there.
Did you Root the phone first or just install the leaked Rom RUU exe file?

I rooted my phone and then installed the RUU exe but since then I have wiped my phone does that mean I have to root my phome again?

I'm not sure. You probably still have root since the RUU is rooted, but you probably have to go through it again to get the recover image on there too. This is where my level of expertise ends.
Finally figured it out!
Turns out when I flashed the RUU rom I lost my recovery screen but I manged to figure out how to get it back.
This is how to do it

Installed CM7 with Gapps for 6.1....HELP!!!

I initially intalled CM7 after cleaning cache and Dalvik and backing up my current ROM using Clockwork. it went good unitil after booting I accidentally installed Gapps from 6.1
Now it boots and loops from the blue CM7 screen to the green andriod asking ' Touch to Start '
I dont know how to get out of this loop or to go bak to recovery manual mode. Please Help. Any chance we can fix this
Thanks
Pull your battery to get out of the bootloop. Then press and hold home while pressing the power button. That should take you to your recovery, where you can wipe and reinstall CM7.

EDIT: I am late to the party, nvm.
I did what you said. When i press power and home button the only menu option i get is 'Clear Storage' to which i pressed yes and 'Menu reset' which i pressed yes. it reboots and back to the loop. Back to loading CM7 and 'touch to begin'
The party is still on. As said installed CM7 with Gapps for CM6 accidentally and now stuck in endless bootloop. Trying to fix it. First suggestion hasnt worked so far
OK so you don't have a recovery (I'm guessing you tried to use rom manager = bad idea). Do you have ADB?
I think I do but have never used it ir dont know how
Is there any hope of recovering the phone or is it just better to get a replacement from Sprint

You need to pull the battery, press volume down + end button (at same time) in order to get to the bootloader. You should then see the skateboarding androids. Press the home button to get into recovery and wipe/format boot, system, data, cache (just to be sure) and then reflash and flash the right gapps.

I doubt sprint would even look at it, let alone fix it or replace it, once they see that you rooted.
Also, I've flashed older gapps with cm7 and didn't get loops. My guess? You forgot to data wipe before installing cm7.

Thank you so much. That finally got me into reboot. Now waiting for reboot with fingers crossed Thank you
Well something went wrong and for all you guys out there with Sprint. They did replace my phone. All i had to do was call and tell them that I was at their Service center to fix the phone and those guys couldnt fix it and it is stuck on the boot screen. But i think i will manage to salvage this before my replacement arrives
Lessons Learned
So the big lesson here is when you need to get into recovery press the volume down and the home button simultaneously and your home free. Thanks to all who helped
Update - Issue Solved
So i did mange to get into recovery and wipe everything off and reinstall cm7 again. Now i hope to flash the right gapps and ill be in gingerbread heaven

If you have a sprint hero, that is actually not correct.
hold home and press power = recovery
hold vol down and press power = bootloader
I don't know what's up with your phone, and I'm glad you fixed it, but if I were you I would reflash a good recovery image just to be safe. Also, make sure when you're getting ROMs you get them from a thread in hero cdma and use the gapps also linked in the OP of that same thread (don't use rom manager IMO). Always flash from recovery and follow the correct steps, that way you should not run into "issues" again. Also, my best encouragement for you, is to search and read. Happy flashing
If you have big fingers, pressing the power button can sometimes press the search button or back button, often causing you to boot into bootloader instead of recover.

Yeah, I have to use my thumbnail which will eventually chip off the paint or whatever it is on the button.
Ha. I actually place the phone on a flat surface a press the buttons.
Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
Hold down the HOME button and then hold the POWER/END CALL button til the phone screen comes on and that should boot you right into recovery if you're having problems with the volume down method

[Q] Hero frozen at clearstorage screen

I'm running Cyanogen 7.01 and after my phone crashed yesterday, it is now stuck on the white clearstorage screen every time I turn it on (the one with three skateboarding androids).
I've tried lots of things to get to a point where I can install a new ROM (I have my stuff backed up) and wipe this old one. But, no dice. Here is what I've done:
1) The clearstorage screen asks if I want to delete user data. If I select no, the screen turns off and then takes me back to the clearstorage screen. If I select yes, it reads "Clear..." then quickly flashes "Press MENU to restart" before rebooting into the clearstorage screen again. If I hold the menu button down while the screen reads "Clear..." the phone boots into the HTC screen indefinitely (I waited 45 min).
2) I tried getting into the bootloader screen (Volume down key and power). Took me to the clearstorage screen.
3) I tried getting into Fastboot. Took me to the clearstorage screen.
4) Holding the key combo for a hard reset takes me to the clearstorage screen.
5) Holding the key combo for a factory reset me to the clearstorage screen.
6) I tried pulling out the SD card during boot and while in the clearstorage screen. No dice.
So, I'm not sure what my other options are. I can't get to the phone via my computer's command line since my computer can't detect my phone when it's in this state.
Thanks so much for reading this and for any help you can offer.

I thought the 3 skateboarding androids was the boot screen? What does it say on the screen? If it shows that if you hit "home" button it will take you to recovery. It should say H-boot on there I believe.
If it does, press the home button and not the menu button, and that should take you into recovery where you can wipe everything and restore your nandroid or install a new rom.
Or power off, then hold home press power. Recovery?
BANG! from my shooter...
Kudos to both of you guys for the responses.
I've actually been able to get to recovery by (duh) holding the home and power key down until I get the recovery screen.
However, after wiping the user data, cache, and davlik cache and installing a new ROM rebooting, I still get back the clearstorage screen.
I've tried to install a few different RUUs from the recovery screen and I get a message along the lines of "[RUU file] is bad. Cannot install"
It's most bizarre.
At this point I've got my data backed up to my computer and will do whatever to unbrick this phone.
Thanks again for all your help!

What recovery are you using? If it's clockwork, go into mounts and storage and format system, boot, cache, data 3x each. Yes, I said 3x. Then, try and flash something besides an ruu. Many of those are to use as a HERCIMG.zip, not to flash in recovery. Judd you want to go to a sense 2.1 rom, try an nfx one or something ( at least to see of it works and you can update prl and other things too. Or, reinstall another gb Rom. I don't know I'd you are trying to get back to stock to take back or something. I say, get it working, then look for a flashable ruu from recovery.

This is an executable HTC RUU that is to be run from your PC. Hook your phone up via the USB. Then double click the RUU on your PC. Follow the instructions. It will set your phone back to 2.27.651.6 and will be unrooted.
also, this may seem stupid, but if you were going from aosp to sense or vice versa, reflash your recovery first.

stuck on dual core technology

I was running a custom droidthorey rom and wanted to go back to stock. So I went into my recovery via cwm and wiped data, cache and divik. the went into restore and fl;ashed back to an earlier point. Everything was going fine untill I rebooted. Now I cant get away from the dual core boot up screen. Ive tried to hold the volume rockers and power button and go into my recovery from there but i guess theres nothing there cuz I wiped data. Im at work so theres not a lot I can do but I just wanted to see if anyone had an idea on what I need to do from this point.

When you are at the triangle with the android, hit both volume buttons to bring up the menu. From there, you can try:
Wiping data/cache again.
Reflashing a ROM by hitting "Install update from SD card"

DEAD battery
i had the almost exact thing happen to me,,,, but the battery died and it wont engage charging..... so am i gonna have to get a new on or find some fast way to charge it? i cant even try any of the previous examples :/
I've heard of Verizon charging batteries for people but I've never tried it. There is a USB hack to charge batteries but you also run the risk of destroying your battery in the process. If it was me i would pick up an extra battery and charger, always nice to have.

[Q] Help!!! Bricked my phone!!!

So I Have a rooted CDMA HTC Hero rooted with WildHeroC RC4. I was cleaning my phones memory up and decided to get rid of some apps. Then I decided to replace the HTC Sense home screen with a windows home screen just to have something different. I backed up the last set up I had using clockwork mod. When I went to uninstall the HTC Sense home screen I used titanium backup pro. When I pressed one of the options to (i think it said) "permanently remove or uninstall" the Sense home screen the hero went into some recovery thing showing a box with an android next to it and an arrow coming out. There is a yellow progress bar at the bottom that gets to about 1/4 the way finished and then starts over completely and does this repeatedly. I tried taking the battery out and putting it back in and then press the power and down volume but it just goes back to the same screen. What happened and can I fix it???? Please help!!!!
Ok first off YOUR PHONE IS NOT BRICKED. If your phone was bricked then it would not come on at all. If your phone turns on It's not bricked. Now do you have a nandroid back up ?? Also what recovery were you using ??? And do you have adb setup ??
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
I don't think I have a nandroid backup. And I was using clockwork mods recovery or at least the default one that comes with it. I think I do have adb set up. What do I do? Please Help!!!

You should definitely check to see if you have a nandroid backup stored some were it will help you with your current issue. Also when you refer to the default cwm did you mean that you downloaded rom manger and flashed a recovery??? And are you s-off or s-on ??? Also do you have adb set up ?? And are you able to boot into hboot?? You do this by
Powering off the phone.
Then press and hold the volume up key.
Then tap/press the power button.
You will see a white screen. That's your hboot screen. To get you back up and running you can find a HERCIMG.zip of cwm recovery or Ra's recovery, drop it on the root of your sd "as in not in any folders" and flash it threw hboot if your s-off. If not then you can look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958968
For how to flash using fastboot with s-on. Or if you have adb setup you can search for the recovery.img of cwm or Ra and flash them threw adb. Once you have your recovery back you can perform a full system wipe by wiping
cache,davlik-cache, and data/factory reset. Then either restore your nandroid or flash your rom of choice. I think your recovery is screwed up and also your rom I'm thinking is screwed up as well. If you can't find the recovery zips or img's let me know. Hope this helps.
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
I think I have S-off. I also think I have a Nandroid backup (I backed up my rom and all my apps and data using rom manager)- is that nandroid backup? When I press the power and down volume button it goes right back to the loading bar and NOT to the menu. I can not boot into hboot. As for the recovery I did load it from Rom Manager. So what do I do. I have adb loaded.
You have to boot into hboot to find out I'd you have s-off. Via my post above. What happens when you try to boot into hboot??? Also have you tried holding the power and home button at the same time for at least 15 seconds to see if you can boot into your current recovery?? I forgot to ask you that in my other post. Also no that's not a nandroid however I believe you can restore that zip if its a zip that rom manger made with cwm.
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
I have tried holding down the home and power button but it does the same thing. It will not let me boot into hboot. It goes strait to the screen showing a white box with an arrow coming out of it and a android standing next to it. There's a loading bar at the bottom that keeps loading up to 1/4th then goes back to the beginning and it does that over and over again.
That's not how you boot into hboot. That's for recovery. To boot into hboot do this.
Power the phone off.
Press and hold the volume up button.
Then tap/press the power button.
Just tap the power button don't hold it.
Only hold the the volume up button. Then you should boot into hboot.
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
I did what you said (Hold up volume and pressed (not hold) the power button) and it still does not go through hboot.
What happenes ??
