I'm running TnTlite and can use playon, a program on my PC to send netflix to my Gtab. It works well.
I tried it, but you have to be at home since it streams from your own networks, also the subscription is like 5 dollars monthly and when i tried it i couln't even fast forward. Just my 2 cents though.
You may want to try it again because you can access it from any wifi connection. And it only cost me 40 for a year and 20 a year after. I know it works because I watched a netflix movie in my local park last weekend.
Thanks for the suggestion, but it has been recommended several times already in different threads. I'm running vegan-tab and patiently waiting for a person smarter than me to figure out how to get this working. Can I afford Playon? Sure, but you know what's better than paying for something? Free! So I'll be patient awhile longer.

Your local park has an open wifi source? Nice indeed.
That being said have you managed to get it to work over 3G?
Are you using your own wifi while sitting in your local park? 'cause that's how I've seen it work--got Playon on my computer and can access it with the Playon on my GTab, so long as my computer is connected to the same network. The Playon on the GTab detects any Playon clients running on the network, and streams from them.
BTW, a monthly subscription is not necessary, if you pay a one-time fee for the software, I believe. At least, that was true when I bought it a while ago.
But still, it's not free, that's true--and now it IS possible to stream Netflix directly.
Or flash cm7

No, it's free Wi-fi in downtown Raleigh, NC. There is a tab in in the setup menu that allows you to configure Playon for remote access. I haven't tried 36 as my GTab doesn't have it. Here is the process as listed in Playon's user guide. It assumes you have Playon running and set up on your pc and connected to a Wi-Fi network:
• Setting up your Android device
Download the PlayOn Mobile app from the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.playon.playonapp
While PlayOn is running on your PC, open the app on your device. Make sure that you are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your PC.
Next, you must “pair” your device with your PC. On the first screen of the app, you should see your copy of PlayOn listed — it will have the same name as your PC. Select your PC and a menu of PlayOn channels should appear. Now that your device is “paired” with your PlayOn PC, you should now be able to watch PlayOn anywhere, either over Wi-Fi or 3G.
The Playon app is readily available. IT was a simple process and works consistently for me.
Yea, you hafta pay for Playon but it is worth it to me.

I want to use my future Hero as a modem to access the internet. Is this possible? I could easily connect my nike to my Ubuntu machine over bleutooth. So I am a bit surprised to read on the net that it is not so easy (due to google blocking tethering apps)? Any pointers?

well when the phone gets released ... root it (once a method is found that works).... then install wifi tether for root users
already done
Hero already has usb tethering built in, its under wireless controls in settings, there's an option to share mobile networks via usb
Hope this helps
Will this work with a Mac ?
No one is for sure yet. It hasn't worked in the leaked versions, even the shipped ones, so we won't know for sure until it is released in the UK on August 15th.
Bluetooth PAN should work as long as the Hero advertises itself correctly over Bluetooth.
Well that's the hopeful theory
That is currently a no-go as well. The Hero (device, not ROM) hasn't been rooted yet & Android throws a fit if you try to listen to the BT socket without root access. That's why the current BT tether apps for the Dream/Magic require root. Even the OBEX app BlueX in the market requires root to recieve files (but can send without root).
Sorry lol, I wan't it too.
Ouch... well thx for the heads up on that... I think
mmm... hopefully a solution will emerge either via BT or USB. But then the telco's are getting smart to the fact that people use their contracted and allowable (ie payed for) unlimited internet (I'm on an unlimited data Orange plan since my old Touch Diamond) do do a very bad thing...
Use it to transfer data

But, the worth is that there are no single carrier who offers this phone and we are 1 day before official launch in EU!!!
Its available for preorder only in one shop for whole country for flat price of 500E, yay
unbelievable
Haha I've changed that release date so many times based on several different sites. That is the date on amazon.co.uk but I know carriers in some places are getting them earlier. Sorry lol. So whoever gets one, is the "Mobile Network Sharing" option enabled in settings?
In the netherlands they gave 75 away for free
I got one
will be delivered next week ^_^
Has anyone got the Mobile network sharing option working??? I can't get my laptop recognise the device in this mode...
I can confirm that the built-in usb tethering works on the Hero.
1) Plug in usb
2) Home screen -> Menu -> Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile network sharing
Your computer now sees a usb network adapter; The hero runs a dhcp server, so you can get all network settings from there. On my laptop (running Fedora linux) I did not have to do anything, NetworkManager automatically detected the new device and set up networking. I don't have a mac, but I assume it would work automatically as well.
PS: I bought my Hero from http://www.handtec.co.uk without contract. I'm using a 3 Ireland mobile broadband sim.

Will this flag up with the provider? on t-mobile 3gb mobile internet per month.. you have to pay alot more for mobile broadband so dont want to use this then find on my bill theyv charged for tethering?
On winMo third party apps never flagged up however I fear this app seems more regulated?
Thoughts?

It shouldn't do no, you are still dialing to their network in the same way you would on your phone, just there is a link for your computer to access that network.
I used the 3gb web and walk for 18 months and had a program on my winmo device called WMWifiRouter which did the same kind of thing (and Joikuspot on my Symbian) and used my laptop via my phone, never any issues!

I plan to bring my Chromecast with me when I travel, but I imagine the Chromecast will have trouble connecting to the hotel Wifi since most hotels have that gateway page you have to go through before you are actually connected to the internet. Is there an easy way around this without bringing my own router with me?
Thanks!

I travel for a living and live about 1/2 of the year in a Marriott.. Here are a few options that I use.
1. Bring a small travel router - this really isn't as bad as it sounds. Is really easy and they make very small ones. Here is what I use: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-MR3020
2. Connect your laptop via ethernet and use windows to share it via wifi. - This works, but it can be a pain. Some VPN clients really don't like this however.
3. Use a MiFi or Cell Phone in Hotspot mode.
I will either do #1 or 3 depending on the hotel and if I am in the US or not.
Hope this helps...
Worse comes to worse you could always use a phone or tablet as a hotspot!

Thanks for the help! I have Pdanet installed on my gs3, but I haven't been able to set up the Chromecast without a third device in the mix. Using my work laptop is out of the question since I can't install the Chromecast app on it. I don't like to bring my personal laptop along with me on business trips since it's kind of bulky and heavy for a 2 night trip. I have an old Android tablet I can bring along with me to set everything up and control the Chromecast from but it would be awesome if I can get it working with ONLY the gs3 and Chromecast. Is there some way to make that happen? Or will I need a third device in the mix because the gs3 cant be a hotspot and controller at the same time?
I have this same question. I read on the developer site that wireless isolation must be disabled in order to use the chromecast. This could be a problem since most public WiFi has this feature enabled (and if they don't they should!). I have a chromecast, a tablet, and an android phone so if the hotel WiFi doesn't work I can always hotspot with phone and control with tablet. However, this is not ideal since I don't have unlimited data plan. It will be interesting to see how much data the various apps' use. I have 3 trips planned the next 3 weeks and will see how it goes!

A computer with wifi (a computer just jacked into a router in wont work) is a necessary part of setting up chromecast to a new network.
edit: actually i might be wrong on that, testing something now
---------- Post added at 10:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:31 PM ----------
Okay, this is what I just did.
I turned Wireless Tether on my phone on. This means wifi can't be on at all and thus your phone can't be on the same network as the chromecast, and won't be able to control chomecast.
BUT
I downloaded the Chromecast app from the playstore to my Nook HD+. It found the Chromecast on my home network and I tapped on it, and saw my Chromecast on my home network (which the nook was also on). I was able to change it from my home network to my phone. This changed the network both my Nook and Chromecast were connected to from my home network to my phone network. I just chromecasted netflix from my Nook to my TV via chromecast fine. So basically I was able to set it up on a new network with no need for a computer.
So if you are traveling, I believe you are going to need to set up your Chromecast to know your phone's wifi network/password before you go. Why? Because my Nook (or your tablet) can't change the network of the Chromecast without already being on the same network. But at this point, I could now take the three devices anywhere now, plugging chromecast into a TV, setting up my phone to tether, and using my tablet to control it.
Annoyingly, once I turned off tethering, the chromecast borked and I had to re-run setup to get it back on my home wireless network. So, it doesn't seem to save multiple networks, unless I did something wrong.

If needed you could always factory reset your Chromecast by holding down the button for 25 seconds. If you do that, you can set it up from the Chromecast app on your nook and set it to your phone's hotspot.

You wouldn't want to connect a chrome cast to public wifi anyways. Then the guy in the room next door could mess with your playback. Travel Router/Hotspot are your best bets (plus being on your own network is a better idea for privacy and security anyways).

I work for a WiFi company and we manage the WiFi for dozens of hotel chains throughout the nation. If you contact the technical support number provided by the hotel they can "Bypass" your Chromecast. All they would need is the IP address or MAC address of your Chromecast, we'll locate it in the DHCP pool and then whitelist it. This will cause it to bypass the login page.

I am pleasantly surprised that they would be willing to do that. I figured anything that could possibly take away from the built in pay for viewing content would not be allowed. The other problem though is Wireless Isolation; it disables wireless clients from being to able to see/talk to each other on the wireless network. This is a problem for chromecast since the "casting" device must be able to talk to the chromecast in order to cast content to it. Do you know how widely used the wireless isolation feature is in the hotel biz? Also if it is enabled is there a way to whitelist the chromecast and casting device so that they would see each other on the hotel's wireless network?

Ah yeah, forgot about the isolation. Most of our configs are set to not allow wireless devices to allow any type of communication with other devices (Allow traffic between wireless clients)

I'd say ask to speak with a Tier2 and explain the whole situation. They may very well disable the isolation for at least that one night if you get lucky. This is all if you visit one of the locations that we manage. Not sure about other companies.
I suppose you could plug a computer into the hotel's hardwire Internet and enable wireless Internet Connection Sharing rather than bringing a router, if you will already be bringing a computer anyway.

actually there is no need of program on the first linkk
on the second link someone pretty much write a code for the steps on the first link
MAC spoofing
I was wondering if this would work.
If I were to spoof the MAC of the chromecast on my cell phone, connect to the hotel wireless, sign in through the gateway, then un-spoof my MAC and connect again with my real MAC. Wouldn't the gateway whitelist both MACs?
Depends if it is whitelisting off MAC or off IP. Either way, you still have wireless isolation problem. There would need to be some type of cloud based controller built-in to chromecast that could forward commands between chromecast and client(s).
Google...if your listening please develop chromecast cloud controller. That would be awesome

Do these things need a wired connection? Those are becoming rare in hotels. Is there a product that creates a personal wifi network, while getting internet from public wifi?
Hi Expert,
just wondering why CC is not working if we have no internet connection. for example for last several days I have a problem with my ISP and
we dont have internet connection but our local WIFI is working, and I was noticed when we have no internet CC is not working (I cannot play movie locally through extension or even cast photo using BubbleUPnP).
is it normal like this? I have rooted CC using latest eureka image.
Thanks
When you launch an app on the Chromecast, it has to download the app from the internet before it can run. Once the app has launched you can disconnect from the internet if it is only accessing local content (like Plex).

thanks DJames1 so in other words, if the CC is not connected to internet there is no way we can use it? because I thought we can stream local files using local wifi by utilizing local bandwidth. for example I would like to watch movie and using VideoStream that should be within local connection, because I can see when I have internet I dont see any bandwidth used on my WAN connection, its only using local bandwidth within my network.
DJames is correct. When an App connects to the CCast, the CCast goes on the Net to load up the player app associated with the App your trying to use.
Once that App is loaded however, Internet connection is no longer needed and all of the data is using the local network.
Good to know in cases where the only Net Access is via Mobile Data which on most Carriers is Metered.
The CCast Player Apps themselves are very small since most of the control code is on the launch device. So it won't eat up your Mobile Data while streaming unless your data is also coming over the Internet.
The default player app is always downloaded?
I thought that the problem was that as soon as it started and couldn't get to the Google DNS, it immediately acted as an AP to go to setup mode.
In any case, before a player can be loaded if needed, pretty sure it has to see if Google has whitelisted the app in question.
thanks guys for enlightening me ... is there anyway to make CCast can be working with no internet connection?
regarding white list, I was putting eureka as default white list.

Yes, that would be a problem too if you are starting from a power-off state. But even if the Chromecast was already on, it still needs internet access when you start a new app.

You may be right about looking for Google DNS on startup but I'm not sure it goes into setup mode if it fails to find it.
It will go into setup if it can not connect to or find the access point it was last setup to connect to, but if that access point just happens to not have Internet at the time and fails the Google DNS check I do not think the CCast will go into Setup AP mode. Just notifies you on the home screen that it does not have internet access,

If it can't reach Google DNS,
(requested refused/blocked) - it'll complain that it's connected to router but cannot reach Internet
(request timed out) - it'll fall back to DHCP-supplied DNS
It will not drop back to setup AP mode unless the configured router or access point cannot be associated.
You're right that in order for player to be loaded, it has to be on the whitelist.
Hey all, I been reading all kinds of methods to tether with the Nexus 5 (also during the Nexus 4 prime), and helped a couple of members here at XDA how I got to tether my T-Mobile's truly unlimited data with 5 GB sharing (it used to be 500, then 2.5GB, now 5GB) connection to my PS3, PC, and other smartphones. Many have PM'd me to explain it further for them how to get it to work, and I figured "I should just make a thread on how I got it to work". In this thread, I will explain to you how I got tethering to work on my phone using T-Mobile's service (it might work for At&T and other carriers). I will tell you the three apps I use and the pros and cons of each app when it comes to tethering a specific device.
Please note:I am not responsible for any consequences you will face with your carrier using my method, nor will I be held responsible if you use my method without having a sharing data plan. This method is for use of a sharing plan that YOU pay for. If you decide to use this method without having a sharing plan, then do what you want, it's your plan, and your money. I have spent a lot of time doing trial and error in order for my tethering to work 100%. I even went over my 5GB of sharing data and I still was able to tether. I think I know why, read the last paragraph of this post. Again, THIS IS FOR MEMBERS WHO PAID FOR TETHERING SERVICE.
Without further ado, you will first need to edit a database located in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. You need to add a new entry that is called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0. Google and T-Mobile decided to team up and provide a way for T-Mobile to sniff what devices you are tethering to, thus sometimes redirecting you to the T-Mobile page saying you need to add a sharing plan. You can either edit the database with a sqlite app/program, or simply install the install zip (thanks to yakman66). There is an uninstaller if you wish to revert back. I have no idea if you should reflash the zip after you install a new ROM or update it, but I did it anyway. If you need a deeper explanation, refer to the first 4 posts from this thread here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/fix-nexus-5-tethering-block-t2581035
Installer:https://github.com/marcandrews/hammerhead-hotspot-fix/releases/tag/v1.0
Uninstaller:https://github.com/marcandrews/hammerhead-hotspot-fix/releases/tag/v1.0u
Now we get to the apps. The three apps I use to tether are PDANET+/Foxfi, Clockworkmod Tether, and WiFi Tether Router
PDANET+/Foxfi: Note: There is a free version of PDANET/FOXFI, but you will be kicked off the tethered connection every 20-30 minutes, and I believe there is an a limit of how much MB you share daily. Purchasing the app is only $7.97.
Download from Play Store. Link:PDANET Foxfi:Foxfi Foxfi for At&T and Sprint:Foxfi (Sprint/AT&T Only)
Please make sure you download the correct Foxfi for you carrier. PDANET is for connecting via USB and Foxfi is for bluetooth and wireless. You must install the PC program located here. This app is pretty much self-explanatory. You just set up the network name and password if you decide to use wireless, or plug your phone in PC via USB with PDANET+ for Windows installed.
Pros:
No need to root.
Tethering for your computer: Pretty much instant. Easy setup. Just to be safe install a user switch agent and change it to IE 7.
Tethering for gaming: Using my PS3, I am able to play online with my friends. I am running around 30-40 ms ping, which is not bad for wireless. Smooth.
Tethering for other smartphones and tablets: Easy setup also.
Cons:
You have to pay the app in order to use the app for its full potential.
Computer: For some reason, I get kicked off for a couple seconds from my tethered connection and then connected again. I even enable "Hide Tether Usage" on the options with Google DNS checked on the settings. I think because T-Mobile blacklisted Google DNS (idk?)
Gaming: Your NAT type will never be opened. That means if you join a party that also does not have an open NAT, expect not to be able to join that person. If anyone knows a way to port forward your carriers IP address, please let me know.
Smartphones and tablets: Haven't experienced nothing wrong.
WiFi Tether Router:
Download: WiFi Tether Router
Configure your Network Name SSID, encryption type (whatever works best for you, I use wpa2-psk)m WiFi password, and then enable the tether.
Pros:
Much cheaper than PDA/FOXFI. Only $2.50
There are more setups you can do for this app. You can change the interface, method, drivers, WiFi Mode. There are also tweaks especially for consoles like MTU adjust, enabling DMZ, DMZ Port Forwarding, and DCHP settings. Perhaps you can port forward and have your Nat open with this app, but I'm not expert when it comes to these, perhaps someone out there can find a solution? Let us know!
Computer: Haven't tested it to be honest. If someone is willing to try please let us know how it went.
Gaming: Easy setup. Works just as good as Foxfi
Smartphones and tablets: Works just as good as Foxfi
Cons:
You can only use wireless, there is no USB.
Gaming: Same as Foxfi, Nat is not open.
Smartphones and tablets: None.
Clockworkmod Tether:
Download from Play Store: Clockworkmod Tether (no root)
After that install the drivers of your phone located here
Last but not least, install the tether software on your computer.
Mac: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/tether-mac.zip
Linux: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/tether-linux.tgz
Windows: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/TetherWindowsSetup.msi
Once installed, allow debugging on your phone to PC via usb and start the tether connection.
Pros:
Free, you just need root.
Computers: I don't get kicked out whatsoever tethering on my PC. Not once did I get disconnected for a second and reconnected. Like I said as a precaution switch user agent to IE7.
Cons:
Gaming: Won't accept USB.
Smartphone and tablets: it only uses USB tethering.
So there you go guys, these are the apps I use to tether my devices. You can choose whatever works best for you. When it comes to me playing online or sharing my net to smartphones and tablets, I use Foxfi because it is simple to set up. WiFi Tether Router I just use it as a backup. When it comes to tethering my PC, I use clockworkmod tether because I don't get disconnected from my computer.
I have been using these apps since Nexus 4 and not one time I got temporarily banned from sharing my net. Well actually I did, but it was the first time I ever tried it. Ever since then, I was able to use my tethering to its full potential.I use my data to play online (my home net sucks), and I have not been flagged. Playing online does not consume a lot of data (about 20-30 mb an hour). Here are a couple of ways to keep using your tether without being flagged by your carrier.
1. DO NOT DOWNLOAD BIG FILES ON YOUR GAME CONSOLES. Guys, please use your home internet to update your console version or downloading a patch. As soon as you download a file on your console you will be flagged. I have not tried it with the new 5GB sharing limit but I have tried it on 2.5 and I immediately got flagged, even though I was not close to my sharing limit.
2. Don't download torrents or pronz on your PC using your data. If you want to do that, I suggest going on your phone and downloading it via your phones browser or torrent app. This way your carrier will know you are downloading straight from your phone and not from a tethered device.
Other than that, use your tether how ever you like, but with responsibility. Tethering to other smartphones and tablets seem to not red flag T-Mobile at all. I shared 10gb of data to my coworkers and all they do is stream Pandora and YouTube. I hope this will clear things up and hopefully there will be better alternatives, but I think these methods should let you use your tethering service.
Sort of confused here, I use the built in WiFi tethering in my non rooted nexus 5 on T-Mobile without issue. Why does one need this?

Wait, what?
I've never had an issue using native tethering in stock Android on my Nexus 5.
So, are you saying enabling Tethering & Hotspot in the Settings menu doesn't work for you, and apparently many others?
I use built in tethering with the hot spot fix. No redirects to T-Mobile.

Never had an issue with tethering here
tethering using the default tether options work great for me with tmobile, without any modifications.
dmz not working with wifi tether router...
am i doing anything wrong?
You got tethering too work despite your network, you mean? The n5 tethers wireless, bluetooth, wired, perfectly. The restrictions of your data plan or network are another thing that is nothing to do with an unlocked n5
First of all if someone else asked about this I apologize, I searched and found nothing on the matter.
What I am trying to do is to bypass the Google DNS for the Chromecast. The RG for AT&T is a Motorola NVG589 Serial Number 255307917359184 Software Version 9.1.0h12d34 I do not want to use a VPN and I am not sure on using a dynamic DNS service. With the millions of people who use the lame AT&T I cannot believe that there is not a work around for the Chromecast. I do not have the money to use any services for this so if you want to say that $5 is cheap please. Try being disabled and living off that. All I want to do is make the Chromecast region free. Hola works on the PC but when you use Hola it is unable to cast the video. Don't really want to sit in front of the PC to watch a video, that's why I got a Chromecast. I have another router and have tried that but it is old and the range on it sucks. I don't have dd-wrt or tomato and according to some reading the old router I have is not flashable for that. I hate AT&T but where I live there are only two options for internet and I picked the lesser of the two evils. Really hoping Verizon FIOS comes to town but not holding my breath. Anyways back on point. Is there anyway to accomplish setting up the crap AT&T router to accomplish this? Thought about assigning the Chromecast a static IP but not sure what that would accomplish. Set up bridge mode for the CC? I just don't like paying for internet and have restrictions laid upon me. I pay for the service and it is supposed to be world wide, Says so in the address. Maybe turn my PC into a virtual router then connect that way? Any help would be appreciated.
