Cell standby.
W
T
F?
On my OG Droid, The largest battery consumer was almost invariably Display, followed by Browser. On my wife's Galaxy Tab, same deal. On the Streak 7, Cell standby is almost always at the top of the list; usually by quite a wide margin.
Why is this? It doesn't seem to matter if I leave it on WCDMA only or WCDMA/GSM; it always sucks. Is there a reason for this? Did Dell mess up on the hardware? Does HSPA+ really take that much battery (and, if so, why the same problem when setting it to EDGE only)?
There seem to be a lot of posts on this in the G2X forum, as well, so I'll go troll there for a bit. Any input or discussion on this would be nice, since it would be nice to fix the issue.
I'm not finding any answers, but there is one glimmer of hope: people reporting 45%+ battery drain coming from Cell Standby on the G2X with FroYo say it's gone down to about 25% with Gingerbread. Maybe an OS update will fix the issue?
I'm also thinking this has to do with 4G. I get the issue regardless of the cell antenna I use, so I think there's something about the 4G antenna that simply kills battery, whether or not it's used. Don't know, just an impression.
Anyone having the Cell Standby issue on HoneyStreak? My battery was so poor on HoneyStreak I could almost watch the numbers go down in real time, so I didn't do much testing with it (the Streak 7's my main device, so I have to have a daily driver ROM with all or most features working).
I have the same issue. Cell standby is usually around 71%, and my streak is wifi only? I don't get it.

Your problem is fixable. Search around this forum and you'll find a few ways to disable cell standby on the wifi only model.
Well if your talking about the build.prop fix, it didn't work for me. I have read three threads in their entirety including the honeycomb thread, streakdroid thread and one of the threads in the general section with the appropriate name that escapes me now. None of which solved my problem. Not to say they don't work, I've just had no luck with them.

OK got rid of it finally, keep in mind this is on the WiFi version, not helpful for the phone versions.
Used GingerBreak to root (V2.2.2 Build 15799) (used this because it has an unroot option, which may come in handy if GB or HC comes out.)
User Super Manager to rename the following files...
/system/app/Phone.apk
/system/app/TelephonyProvider.apk
Rebooted and Cell StandBy is GONE!!

I'm getting some fairly significant battery drain from something called "Modality Service." It probably wouldn't annoy me so much if I had any clue what it was. Anyone seeing anything similar? Any idea what it is? My searches on the matter are coming up empty.

On and off through the day.
Interestingly "Modality Service" hasn't shown up at all today, with 7.5 hrs on battery. It's pretty intense when it does though, and I'm still deeply curious.
I saw this on someone's screen shot the other day, googled it and it didn't return anything related to it.
I think the use who posted had data disabled for most of the battery cycle, maybe it has to do with that? Not sure though

I have the same issue. I noticed it yesterday, I had very low usage and it was the top battery user. I clicked on it and it said it used GPS for the whole time my phone was on but I have GPS off, so that was odd. Also I checked into BatteryStats+ and it didn't even have it using my battery. It appears it isn't affecting my battery life because my CPU usage was only about 2s. I have no idea what it is though. I posted this on G+ and a guy replied saying he was on the phone with Motorola multiple times and ended up getting a replacement. I'd prefer not to go that route...
I too just noticed this last night and today. Last night it was showing using 48% of the battery and today using 38%. I found the service and force closed it. Not sure what it does or is.
Do you all have moto assist activated. It's only an issue for me when moto assist is trying to determine if I am driving. If I disable the driving portion, modality service never appears

So since the update to 4.4.2 on Verizon with the new battery life update, my battery lasts about 6 hours, and also I keep losing my softkeys, have to keep rebooting to get them back. Just curios if anyone else is having this problem??, I emailed motorola today and they saiid that no one else is having this problem. and told me to try turning my phone off and back on and see if that helps. Does anyone think that smashing my phone and filing an insurance claim to go back to 4.4 a good Idea?
Yes, insurance fraud is a great idea! By the way, no such issues on my VZW Dev Edition. Same ROM, just with an unlockable bootloader.

Insurance fraud is illegal. And I'm betting you haven't even tied a factory reset.

I have not had the issue with the softkeys... but I have had horrible battery life! 5.5 hours today and I was from 100% to 0%. My phone always feels very hot. In my pocket it feels like I have handwarmers. It's not like I played a game at all today for more than 5 minutes, or talked on the phone for a long time. It was less than average usage and horrible battery life.
Getting fantastic battery here. Stock 4.4.2 unrooted

Load gsam to try to figure out what is eating your battery. I had a similar issue after 4.4.2 upgrade, discovered that wifi was really running hard (turned it off, also found a box down in settings to turn off where apps can use wifi even with wifi off). I also found my email account was eating my battery. I killed my account and loaded k-9 email. Now battery is fantastic.
My battery is getting drained pretty rapidly. I'll try shutting off Wi-Fi whenever I'm not near a hotspot and see if that fixes things.

No issues here following update, backup your stuff and factory reset the phone.

I had the same issue with my battery the day after my 4.4.2 update. I contacted Motorola and they asked me to clear the cache partition. I did this to make them happy but I actually fixed my issue. Hopefully it works for you too.
So i had already already done the wipe and factory reset. The only thing that fixed this was the clearing of the cache as far as the battery life. Also I found that the loss of the soft keys was from after use of team viewer and clash of clans apps after I hit the home button to get out. When I closed the app on exit I haven't had anymore problems losing the soft keys. This ones was more of my own stupidity. Ha thanks for the help

Out of curiosity, to the peeps posting pics of their battery status; what was your screen time?
How does data on Nexus 6 compare to the old Motor X?
I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but if you're inquiring about mobile data, it's simply fantastic.

Thanks what I'm looking for is how is it in real life. Does it hold on to 4G compared to other phones. I want to buy one as soon as I can get my hands on one I'm on Version I have missed Google Play and Motorola I think they only sold about 10 phones lol. I'm in a tuff signal area if the radios are not good the phone is useless to me. Thanks.
Again, IRL it's really fast. I get LTE coverage just about everywhere, but when I'm on HSPA it responds just as quick. I stream a lot of music with Google Play since it doesn't count against my data with T-Mo, and I have it set for highest quality on mobile network, and songs play back to back with no buffering. Browsing the web is just as seamless in my experiences so far.

Thanks maybe I'll be able to snag one on Google or Moto tomorrow Wed is supposed the magic day.
I've been running on Verizon for about 3 weeks now, with my old phone (RAZR maxx HD) I was always dropping to 3g at work, since switching I think it has only dropped to 3g once at work.

Yes it is very good at holding 4g for me and I don't get the battery drain I used to get at work.

Your probably getting a better signal that's why your battery was better. I can get stuck here in a bad 3G area and it will suck the battery right out the phone always searching for signal even with my Droid Maxx whose radios are pretty darn good.
Hey guys,
Haven't seen this wakelock issue pop up on the Nexus 6 yet, I know it was something that was an issue for the Nexus 4 and older version of the OS a while back
Anyways I've just updated to 5.1 and it's working surprisingly well, aside from having to downgrade the radio to receive calls.
The problem I'm noticing all of a sudden is the msm_hsic_host and PowerManagerService.Display, the former being the worse of the two.
In the screenshot you'll see that my phone is awake 61% of the time over 22 hours of testing, almost 6 of those hours being msm_hsic_host, and 4 being the PowerManagerService.
I looked a bit in to the msm one and it seems to come up when the phone is bouncing between 3G/LTE signals and people suggest putting the phone on wifi, but my phone has full-barred LTE almost always and when I'm home I'm on wifi, so this wasn't able to fix my issue.
Is there a way to see more detail what is causing this process to keep the phone awake? Or has anyone seen this and found a solution?

Yeah for the host I had read it's related to a poor signal, but I don't have a poor signal at all. When I'm at work it's full LTE as you can see in the screenshot above.
At home I'm on Wifi, and even if I'm not on Wifi it's also a full signal.

Did you also get this figured out? Because I am having this wakelock as well on Franco Kernel on my Nexus 6.
OK I know phones put out heat but not with the simplest of tasks. I mean this is ridiculous if I play a game on it it gets smoking hot. My wife's nexus 6 doesn't even get warm and my s 5 I traded in for this barely got warm even with heavy use. Now onto the battery omg it drains faster than a 454 wide open does anyone have any advice or work around that actual work to improve both of these issues I am rooted have greenify, and tibu with some bloat frozen but still no noticeable difference thanks in advance
Oh yeah did I mention that the signal sux ass I'm constantly loosing lte coverage and it takes forever to even load the playstore....
I can literally sit here on the lowest brightness, everything disabled and watch the battery percentage go down. On super light use (navigating settings etc) it's warm.
Tried stock... or on clean rom...same.
Just charged to full, did a factory reset..Started fresh no restore and it went from 100% to 94% in less than 8 minutes. Is this a joke? Lol yeah this one is going back! Oh and those 8 minutes we're very very light use..just navigating phone.

I've been up for 3 hrs and I'm down to 52% I am using my tether but that's it. Think I might take this back and try the edge or another s6...I heard lollipop 5.1 is suppose to fix these issues any buddy have an info what so ever on the problems causing this. I love the phone but something needs to happen here and fast

3 hours tethering and you only lost 48%? That's pretty good. Tethering uses your cell data (battery kilker) and constant WiFi (battery killer) while keeping the CPU out of deep sleep to process routing for the tethered devices.
Yeah I know it eats battery, I don't have Internet where I live so tether is all I get it blows I'm also comparing to my wife's nexus 6 and my s 5 which both never dropped at this rate.
I get as good battery life as my N6, which is not as much as I'd like, but it's good enough. It's 2 and I've only dropped my phone on wireless charging for a few mins, and it's at 74%.
