[Q] Housing - Hero CDMA Accessories

So ive previously spoke of doing some customization to the housing of the phone itself, but i have a few questions. First, what all materials are used in the phone? Second, what type of paint/dye should i use on the platic-esque part and metal part? Third, should i proboably put on clear coats and polish after painting? Finally, does anyone know how i could touch up scratches on my silver hardware buttons on the front of the phone. Its pretty much just paint chipping i just dont know how to go about repainting that so that i can see the led's shine through? Thanks for any help possible

Replacement Housings For Charmer.

Hi,
I've been looking at replacement housings for my PDA as it's a bit scratched and fancy getting a black one instead of grey.
I've spotted some good looking ones on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260078879244&fromMakeTrack=true
Anybody tried these?
If so, how are they?
Cheers,
Martin.
Just note: The 'case' mentioned is for Magician phones, i'm not sure if thats the same as that of Charmer.
i know they look the same so might be a good match?! only thing i know for sure though is that the front plate is made of metal on magicians and plastic on the charmer.

The Charmer and the Magician are having the same front panel, camera cover, and battery cover. BUT the middle black plastic housing that sit between the panels(as shown in the attached picture), is NOT the same(reset and microphone places exchanged):
Funnily enough, my TM MDA compact II has a metal front cover.
Same here, my Charmer has a (scratched) metal cover.
If I'm only changing the front and back panels and not the middle section do you think it's worth a shot?

yes it will fit. i made it myself.
Thanks for that, just ordered one now.
I'll post picks once it's fitted.
I'd also like to change the housing of my mda compact ii but Im not too sure whether I'd be able to do it.
Are there any step by step instructions available? and what are the possibilities of ruining all this.. Because everytime I open something im never able to put it back together properly
so anyone else replace their charmers casing? the only problem i found is with the battery cover doesnt quite slide up all the way, leaves a tiny gap. anyone know which part of the cover needs to trimming so it goes all the way up?
You need to trim the small clips at the bottom of the cover (near the headphone socket) as they're a fraction too long.

Replacing front housing / faceplate

I need to replace the front housing / front faceplate on my tilt. I have read the service manual and watched some videos on taking apart the tilt and have read the wiki etc. My question is do I really need to disassemble the whole unit to just replace the front faceplate? It looks like I may just need to remove 4 screws on the rear of the faceplate. So can I remove the faceplate by just removing those screws or do I need to dissasemble the whole phone?
thanks!
taz
oh and I searched tis forum too, but to no avail. I dont want to take apart the whole unit if it isnt necessary.
Yes you can.
Refer to manual attached.
Info is in this forum so search again if you need more info.
freakin awesome. I had searched a ton for something like this and did not find anything, maybe because I was using the terms front housing and faceplate in my searches - I just didn't know what else it would be called. Thank you SO much, this will save me a huge hassle!

Instructions will work - but you have to be pretty carefuly not to damage the rest of the unit and overflex the hinges. Potential for having the top and bottom section gap large than you would like.
Did the ENTIRE housing yesterday - wasn't that bad - just have to keep track of the screws and not forget anything. Have to follow the directions carefully esp when removing the keyboard from the housing - the plastic stick on piece really has to be removed. Followed the official HTC manual from Mike Channon and the only thing I didn't do was completely take apart the SIM to separate the slider. In hindsight should have done that to tighten the hinges a bit so the tilt mechanism is a little more firm. Held my breath when I pressed the power button but it powered up and it worked perfectly all day.
thanks for the tips stim!
I just got done replacing the front cover and everything fit back together ok, one spot on one of the sides has a very slight gap now where the new cover and the rest of the phone don't 100% touch but it is barely noticeable and you would probly only notice it if you were looking for it.
One thing that is missing from those instructions, is that there is one screw that you have to remove after unplugging the 2 ribbon cables, this screw is a B*tch to remove and even harder to put back. It was such a pain to put back that I determined it wasnt necessary and left it out. If you're looking at the front of the phone, this tiny screw is located on the upper right corner.
so I'm hoping that the gap will eventually close more on on that one problem area but I'm not too concerned with it.
thanks again for the instructions Mister B

Im considering painting my N1.

I know there was some Colorware threads but just wondering if anyone has done anything first hand ?
Im curious to the results. I actually modded/painted my G1 to all white and changed the keys to black. I always loved the look so now Im getting an itch to paint my N1.
Does anyone have any insight on the materials used ?
The battery cover and bottom piece seem like the same Tefloney coating that the G1 and other HTC covers have. Not sure if the other is aluminum ?
My touch pro battery cover was the same material. I used a clothing dye to make it black. I wonder if i go Dark if I can use that method here.
I guess if nothing else I need to know if HTC sells any of the case parts seperately so I can practice ?
Any help whatsoever is appreciated.

Scratched up Captivate? =\

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question (I assume so, since it IS a question) but does anybody have a solution to buffing out scratches on the plastic part of the phone? Like, where to find paint to repaint it, or a way to get rid of the "wear" that happens to the captivate? My friend's captivate has the same problem, and I take pretty good care of my phone. I don't want to use a case on it, so does anybody else have this problem? Or a solution? Thanks in advance.
+1
I need this info too.
i also would like to know this!
If it's a total repaint for the plastic parts of the phone housing i would remove the guts and sand it/rough it up with a very, very fine grit sand paper then repaint. They make several different types of spraypaint that bond to plastic, you may not even have to sand it first. If you do have to sand though i would definitely remove EVERYTHING from the inside of the phone and make sure there are NO specks of plastic particles anywhere inside the housing before re-assembling.
If it's touch up's pretty much the same thing just check with a hobby shop for plastic paint and try and get a match. If it has gouges out of the plastic, i'm not sure but they probably make a compound to fill with before painting. There are so many hobby shops and different types of paint now i'm sure it can be done fairly easy. A friend of mine put scallops/stripes down the sides of his old phone, looked really nice..
Only other option if it gets to bad is to replace the housing, i looked on ebay but didn't see any "full housings" for sale. I'm sure there will be some eventually though..
thank you for the info, that is certainly an option. I'm not a very good painter, but the housing idea seems valid. maybe with some extensive searching I can find a housing for my cappy. :C That is, assuming I get my headphone problem fixed first.
sounds a little hardcore for some scratches...does anyone have a something they put on top of it like a wax/polish or something?

Broken front glass (& usb port) - replacement?

Hi guys,
has anyone of you tried changing the front glass without digitizer and display?
In disassembly videos I can only see people changing the whole thing.
Also, do you think I can manage to repair the front glas as well as the USB port with just an iron instead of a hot air blower (and the usual tools made of plastic)?
Thanks in advance!

I haven't done the front glass on mine yet, but my understanding is that in general you're really better off replacing front glass as an entire unit with digitizer and display. An iron on pretty low through a cloth/towel might well work. It's not just glue that melts, it's a thin strip of rubber gasket material with adhesive (okay, maybe it's thick glue, but it looked pre-formed to me) holding the glass back cover on.
Heating probably helps a bit with softening the stuff, but after the first time you peel it up you won't really need to do that again. I'd recommend picking a corner (say, bottom left as you're looking at the back) and just plan on prying from there every time, so you only have one spot where the plastic gets marred.
Don't spend too much time heating, worry more about having a suction cup tool that you can lift with while you try to work a guitar pick or hobby knife or something in under the corner. Have at least two ready, so you can wedge one in, and work your way around without it just dropping back down on you. You'll probably tear the material a bit but that's okay, just spread it back out evenly around the edge on the glass before you put the cover back on. Also, you definitely should be using a case to make sure it doesn't just fall off in your pocket once you've opened it up a couple times.
USB cable replacement isn't awful, just time consuming. The biggest gotcha is to keep all three of the little gold clips on the plastic "mid frame" ring (that's the first thing you remove that requires screws after getting the back glass up) from fallling and getting lost.
You can PM me if you have any questions about this, I've replaced my USB cable/port assembly a couple times (first replacement was defective). And I'm about to attempt replacing the screen as a whole unit with glass & digitizer on my wife's Z2 Plus, so I'll let you know how that goes.
