GINGERBREAD and AIRPLANE MODE. Increase in battery drain? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So yes most people know about the general problem with gingerbread and battery drain. Yes tons of solutions have been suggested, some work for some people some dont. None work for me. I think I may know why
I want to ask specifcially about using AIRPLANE mode overnight on a gingerbread ROM. Does anyone else do this?
Ever since moving to gingerbread ROMS from stock Froyo, whether its a stripped out BASE version, or a decked out rom like DARKYS or MIUI, every morning my battery has just been aboslutely hammered.
I have tried most suggestions and nothing seems to really matter much, if at all
I realised that I use AIRPLANE mode everynight or during the day when I dont need the phone, and most people dont. Funnily enough, I can tbe 100% confident yet, but it seems like if I leave the phone on normally and DONT turn on AIRPLANE mode, the battery lasts much much longer
How could this possibly be... I would like to hear other people opinions and tests.
Does the phone not really go into AIRPLANE mode and loop some kind if battery sucking feature?
Here is a great example.
I flashed to DARKYS RE edition ROM 10.1 Last night. I was told it does not have the batter drain issues.
I used the ROM for a few minutes to see how it runs.
I didn't leave anything running or install anything. The rom was blazing fast. I turned on AIRPLANE MODE, pressed the power button to lock the phone and left it for the night, at 93% battery. 8 hours later, in airplane mode and locked, the battery was down to 22%!

Same here.
I tried Ginger for a week (it was Darkys RE 10.1).
Draining issue came out only with AIRPLANE MODE during night.
Rolling back to 9.5 solved my problem.

Not for me. Its still the same. I can say that since i use the airplane quite often. Almost every day.

No problem with airplane mode and battery using XWJVH with Voodoo kernel.
Btw. I did reset the battery stats after a full charge.

[Q] Read battery log after restart

I have an issue I'd like to debug, but I need some information to help myself:
I charge my SGS (JM1) in the evening, when it's 100% full I disconnect the charger and go to bed (23:30), phone switches to airplane mode at 24:00. When I get up 8h after, my phone is off and has absolutely no battery left.
This happens every now and then, IMHO there's no app causing this (haven't installed anything lately). I can't reproduce the issue.
How would I best debug this and try to find out what's causing the battery drain?
Can I still read the battery log after a restart?

Thank you so far.
I looked at the battery usage stats and saw that bluetooth was enabled for more than 7 hours (although it was disconnected). That IMHO shouldn't have completely drained the battery though...
I am seeing the same problem recently; the battery drains out really quickly in no time even when there are no major apps running. Even the battery usage menu shows nothing major. During this time I have noticed that the phone gets really hot and the battery indicator app shows that the battery temperature as b/w 40-50 C (its around 25-35 C when there is no issue). During this time I can't even make calls or send/receive SMS!!! Seems that it just cannot get a network signal.
There were no such issues for the last couple of months. I can't imagine an app directly or indirectly causing this.
If an app keep the phone awake all.the time and use wifi/Bluetooth/gps it will drain the phone fast.
The only solution is to find out where the flaw is.
Personal i would backup the phone and do a complete wipe/ reset of the phone so it will be clean and like new. Then i would test to se if it drain the battery.
If it does then it is broken and need a.repair. Else i would start to intake the apps i need, but looking close what they do.

Ex-act-ly the same for me!
I will disable all self-installed apps via pm disable and see what happens.
I'll then report back...
Have you installed any lagfixes recently? When I had voodoo lagfix on jg4 I would get at best 8 hours of stand by time. As soon as I flashed jpm I get 1% drain per hour
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I have not installed any lagfixes, my phone is on stock JG4 firmware. The battery life is otherwise very good, only at times (very random) the battery starts draining from 100% to 0% in a matter of few hours.I use System panel to check if there is any app that is causing this, but it does not indicate anything like that.
The only thing that I can think of is that the phone for some reason looses network (I can't make a call and send/receive sms during this time) and keeps trying to reconnect without success and hence drains out the battery. Once I reboot the phone everything becomes fine and the battery usage becomes normal. Is there any way to find out that the phone is trying to connect to the mobile network and this is causing the battery to drain out?
Neither do I, never used any lagfix so far, I'm on stock JM1.

maybe u should consider upgrading to JM7 or JM9. and before installing apps do a full reset and cache wipe.

[Q] Help, extreme battery drain!!

Hello
I can't use my Galaxy S more than 3 hours, after that the battery is on 0 %. I've tried some of the guides here, but nothing helps. My phone is running Darky's Rom 9.1 Extreme Edition. I would be thankful if some of you could help, so i can use my phone without it should be plugged in the charger!
- Mosawer
I also got some issues with darky's 9.1. Did you tried 9.2 version? it solved most of my battery problems. but still i can't wipe battery status from the CWM.
No but i would definitely try it. I've also had Darky's rom 8.0, and the battery life wasn't the best on that also. To be honest, my phone has never survived a whole day without i should plug in the charger. I've also tried the battery wipe, but it didnt work, actually it just got worse. Before i tried the battery wipe, it could hold 7-10 hours, but now i cant use it more than 4 hours.
you could calibrate your battery, as flashing ROMs all the time can confuse the battery and make it think it is at a different % than it actually is.. try this
1. Run the device down until it turns itself off.
2. Turn it back on and wait for it to turn itself off again.
3. Remove the battery for 10 seconds.
4. Replace the battery, but leave the device off.
5. Charge the device until full and then for another hour.
6. Boot into recovery and reset battery stats (or, go to console and type “su” enter, followed by “rm /data/system/batterystats.bin”)
7. Run the device’s battery down until it turns itself off.
8. Charge to full while off.
9. Restart and use as normal.
when you have done that you could try a battery saving app i use juice defender its free, but there is a paid version with more features. what this does is everytime the phone sleeps (screen off) it disables all connections like 3g wifi data mode etc but still allows you to receive calls and texts..
also get your self a good task killer, and place a icon on the home screen to kill running apps quick, i do this everytime i put my phone in my pocket, making sure nothing is eating my battery apart from me when im using it.
try them methods and post back with your results in say 2days time ?? good luck
EDIT: another thing to do is use automatic brightness, this adjust the brightness of the screen depending on the ambience of where you are. e.g if its sunny the screen dims down, if its dark it brightens up... great for saving battery.
Thanks man, i will try calibrating my battery this way, but dont think i'm gonna download the task killer og battery saver, but i'll sure post my result after i've tried it !
well there is samsungs own built in task manager its good, you will be suprised what apps open up on their own and start using your connections and running processes without you even knowing. all that drains battery. but just see how you go
Well it didnt work dude, the battery life still sucks as much as before

If you flash a rom and the battery no longer behaves as it should and hundreds of other posts report exactly the same problem . Then is it not the rom you flashed to blame .

Hey... first off, what sort of things are you doing with your phone? Casual browsing, youtube, streaming? Wifi, GPS on?
If the battery is not defective, there must be some program instance that is draining that battery.
Wifi, GPS and that sort of things are off. I'm browsing a little bit, and then just use my apps and games, and of course i write some sms's. and hear music.
Thats the thing i'm doing on my phone.
Btw: When i unplug my phone from the charger, it immidately drops 2-4 %.

Nothing have worked, but i finally remember how the battery drain started! It was when i decided to calibrate my battery. After i did it, the extreme battery drain started! So it has nothing to do with Darky's rom or something else, i is the battery calibratings problem. Anybody knows how to fix it???

[Q] Darkys 9.5 Wlan causes Battery Drain

Hey guys,
the day before yesterday i flashed Darky's 9.5 on my phone.
This is the first Darkys version for me. The flashing was fine and very easy but then i got big problem regarding the Wlan battery use.
First i tell you how i flashed Darkys, perhaps i did a failure here.
1) First i flashed Darkys Reserrection Version on my phone
2) After that i configured the Darkys App from the market and flashed the reserrection.zip with CWM
3) At the end i flashed Darky's 9.5 with CWM
Now the points regarding my problem.
Yesterday night i switch off my phone with at least 85% battery. I switched off GPS,Bluetooth and i deactivated the data transfer mode for UMTS. But it was my intention to test the battery drain with active WLAN, because with the original T-Mobile Firmware the phone uses circa 25% battery a night.
But when i woke up i was really shocked. My phone turned off and the battery was complete empty. In this night the battery drained 85%. How is this possible? There were no apps running excepting the Advanced Task Killer.
Did i something wrong? (When i flashed the battery was fully charged)!!
//edit
Here are my settings:
PDA: I9000XWJS8
Phone: I9000XXJVE
CSC: I9000XXJS1
Kernel: DarkCore 1.0
I wouldn't think this was a common issue. Have you tried just re-flashing the ROM again via CWM? Maybe try the same thing again?
Thx for your answer.
Yeah i even think that it's not a common issue.
I will watch the battery this night. If the bug occurs again, i will flash the Rom with CWM again. Have i to disable the lagfix or can i do it on the fly without changing something in the current system ? If yes, where?
my battery is the best its been in a long while since using this rom so i wouldnt dismiss it just yet. what modem are u using?
I use the modem Darky's App Configurator has recommend (JQ1 but i have read that JVE is flashed (se my settings above)). But i think I will try flashing again. This night the battery drops from 100% to 47% with the same settings I mentioned above. Then i watched the battery usage, but they were strange.
Wifi and "Wifi using" uses 100% cause they were running the whole time. But the category "execution" used 75%, so the phone did not drop into sleep mode for about 75% of the whole night? How is this possible? I checked all my 3rd party apps I installed on my own and they don't have a setting to manage this.
Does one app of Darky's Configurator do this?
Well Darky can answer question best .
Me i blame the rom change the rom .
jje
Now i flashed Darkys 9.5 with wipe again.I will watch the battery drain and I will notify you about the result.
//edit
Now I go asleep and I will report tomorrow if the flash was successfull. But I got one question left:
By accident I saw in the wireless setting window that my phone scans every 5 seconds for new devices, even if its connected to my own router. (If the phone goes to standby the WLAN does not scan cause of my settings). But why das it scan every 5 or 6 seconds, even if it's connected to my own device?? Is it possible to increment the scan time?
Good morning guys,
here is my update:
I think the reflash worked. Last night my phone uses 10% battery with wifi and data transfer on, gps and bluetooth off. I think this is a good value.
By using the flightmode the next times I will save some more
Now there is the question left regarding the number of wifi scanns. (see the post above). Is it modifiable ?

Did you recalibrate your battery after upgrading to Darky's 9.5?
It is recommended that u recalibrate your battery when you flash a new ROM.
You shoukd recalibrate your battery, i.e. drain it, turn off your phone and fully charge it, completely drain it (use it heavily). Then charge it again and voila, recalibrated!
Also, I find that after flashing a new ROM the battery drains really quick the first 2 times I charge it, before actually working as it should. So it's not that strange that your phones battery was dead in the morning. But I think this also has to do with recalibrating the battery.
Darkys v9.5 has a battery life of 3-4 days for me (not heavy usage) so it should be better after recalibrating your battery!

[Q] [ASK] HElp to find out what causing this battery drain

hi all..
2 weeks ago I finally bought my very first android based HH, GNOTE...currently I'm running on ICS LPF Taiwan unroot, and very love it. one of my concern on this ICS, is the battery drain so much, considering it just sit on my pocket.
i have CPU Spy and BBS Installed, and found that it just Deep Sleep 48% and 200MHz 37 %. Kernel Wakelock is "multipdp" 25% Power Manager Services 21,2% and secril_fd-interface 19.25.
could you please tell me what causing this battery drain so much..?
The best thing that you could do is do a Factory Reset, but with all the bricking problems it's highly discouraged. I don't recognise the processes, but you should make sure that you deleted all the apps you never use, since one of then could be causing the problems you have.

After upgrading to German ICS, also had problems with wakelocks (phone never sleeped)
Done this (posted on XDA somewhere) and it worked:
Turn Flight Mode ON
Turn Off the Phone
Take out the battery for 30 secs
Plug battery back
Turn on the phone
Wait until all is loaded and turn off Flight Mode.
Also, always disconnect from the charger with screen ON and unlocked.
After using this 2 metods, never had a wakelock again (multipdp etc)

thanks for your answer for my question...
regarding that did you mean that i have to stop receiving email on my Galaxy Note..?? for me that's really important since i bought my note to support my daily job...
is it the main cause..? if yes, i think i should buy another battery as a way out.
I also have encountered the same problem with my galaxy note after the stock ics update in India.
I have checked out the earlier posts on the same issue..
Some users had the problems of deep sleep and some others had other problems..bt as far i have been able to understand this problem...it is associated with those apps which we often use..for eg i had been using apex launcher for so long...and it used to suck my phones battery like hell also coz of the widgets and the other things that it use.
So what i did was a simple factory reset and a data wipe and didn't install the apex launcher again.
I let my phones battery drain completely and charged it till 100% and simply rebooted it and removed the battery too. And its working good now.
Those things which suckedy battery included android system and display...i could do any thing about display but i force stopped may process of android system and results are good.
One more reason for battery drain could be that when we go backs from the apps on stock ics on galaxy note..the apps do not get closed comletely like stock web browser which works in the background too..so might be other reason for so.
Don not install those apps which u dont use often coz they might work in background add unnecessorily suck ur bettery.
Try the battery pull off trick it really works for majority of users.
Force close those apps and processes which u feel unnecessory.
Those whose claim ics doesnt work smooth on their note they pls go the develpers option in settings and enable the force GPU rendering option then it will work smooth like anything...
One more thing which u may already know about galaxy note ics is that now it runs all the tablet apps on ur note! Thats pretty amazing coz u need not root it or do anything...for me it worked with the apps like...adobe idea, adobe photoshop touch and all other adobe apps and some other tablet apps..download these apps directly from 4shared..so cheers!!!
Those who are not happy with their battery pls try factory reset and battery pull off trick...it worked for me and it might work for u too my friend...
if you are entering deep sleep at all then you aren't being affected by the bug where you have to make sure your screen is on and unlocked before pulling it off the charger.
i suffered from this bug after updating to ics lpy, but since following the guide above (flight mode, power down etc.) i've had no issues.
let your phone completely discharge, then turn it back ona dn make sure it turns off again. then fully charge it. i found this increased the accuracy of the battery a little, when i did it it dropped from 10% to 1% in around 20 mins, then i was able to use the phone for almost half an hour on 1% so obviously my battery stats weren't quite right.
if you've done a factory reset, and you're sure the phone is entering deep sleep ok, just go through a couple of complete charge/discharge cycles and see if that improves things

I rooted the phone.
Installed SpeedMod Kernel 3-3 via mobile odin that didnt really solve it.
I installed Abyss kernel. Wiped everything because its supposed to be a safe wipe kernel.
Then installed Criskelo rom
Then installed SpeedMod Kernel 3-3 again and everything was great with battery life.
You have to reinstall apps and setup your phone basically but its well worth it in my opinion. Now my only battery drain is me always messing with my phone.

@gayanaji - I use Criskelo's ROM and all the Samsung apps work fine. No probs here. Many of the custom ROMS are based on other Kernels that the Samsung apps do not work with. I am a bit new to this but I believe that is correct. Just make sure to use a Samsung app compatible Kernel if you decide to do it. Also another piece of advice before doing anything read a bunch to make sure you fully understand everything with regards to rooting, flashing custom ROMS etc.

Too Much overnight Drain

Guys i am experiencing A high amount of overnight battery drain.Almost 15% battery gets depleted every night.
I am on OOS beta 10 with Ex Kernel... Android OS always consumes 13-15% battery..
Can anyone provide a solution ?
It might be one of your apps that keeps waking the device overnight. Get a Wakelock detector, look for the app that might be the cause, uninstall it and see if it helps.
It might also be the kernel I'm not sure why but EX was draining a lot of battery for me as well, but it seems to be working just fine for others. So you might also want to switch to stock kernel for a bit and see how it goes
Also, a bit unrelated, but putting your phone on Airplane Mode while you're asleep can help also. (IF you don't get any important messages or calls overnight that is) I lose no more than 1-2% over 8 hours on Airplane Mode. Plus, it's good for your health as well.

I'm not quite sure about that. I only used EX once. Once you're certain that EX is whats causing the drain, you can go ahead and ask in the EX Thread. Hopefully someone will be able to point it out. And if you're not certain, I'd say flash stock back and get only the apps you really need and see if it still drains.
And if you're in to custom business, I'd suggest you try out Paranoid Android once as well, the new build is pretty solid and i'm getting a considerably better battery life than i did on OOS, both active and idle
I'm losing 1% per hour, it seems normal for this device.
I've tried factory reset and various kernels.
