I actually didn't notice at first(since 3g is patchy where I live) but since switching to the overcome rom my tab will connect to 3g but as soon as data transferring begins/resumes it will switch back to "H" which is thier high speed "Edge" network.
Baseband version: I9000UGJK3
Could this be the at&t modem that overcome provides?
Are there any other modems I could test out that might be better?
Thanks for your help.
found what i was looking for here
My toolbar still shows "H" during data transfers ("3G" otherwise) but the speeds seem fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is with that.
H is HSDPA which is faster 3G. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
Ok that makes more sense, thanks.
Speeds seem to be the same with the jm2 modem, anybody else done testing on the rogers network?

So, I know in previous posts I said I didn't care about it, however, when I went into SGS Tools and did system info. It said I was on HSDPA network type and I just downloaded RootMetrics coverage map app and Download was 3352 kbs and upload was 192kbs. Which, from what I understand is HSDPA range. The only reason I'm confused is because I thought HSDPA did not work on a KB1 modem? Or am I just misinformed?
Hsupa will not work with kb1, which is why your upload speed is low.
Then why does it say that HSDPA is my network type? I mean I really dont care because I use wifi everywhere. Just curious really.
You are connected to the hsdpa network and will see hsdpa speeds but hsupa speeds are throttled.
Well thats ok. Who cares about uploading anyway? Lol
even on a bone stock jf6 or jh7, when you look at your network status it shows HSDPA
nothing to see here move along
Hello all,
I am using a Bell Canada GT on Rogers in Canada (with JPZ modem).
All works good (I have internet and phone) - however I never seem to use 3G.
The 3G indicator comes on for a second or two, but then the GT switches over to a non 3G data mode.
I would think 3G is the fastest - and it would be great to use it.
Do I need to use a different modem file? Or maybe different settings?
Please help.
Thank you all!
What is it switching to? H, or G, or EDGE? There is a Bell modem - JK3. Maybe try that? Takes only a few seconds to find out.
It switches to H
H is a half-step faster than 3g. It's short for HSPA (high speed sumpin-sumpin).
Thank you so much for explaining. I googled hspa and you are right. I have learnt something from you.
Also, it seems then that there is no need to touch the modem file.
Thanks again!
I wouldn't change it - it sounds like you get good results.
Hello,
I have a galaxy tab non branded with overcome installed.. I`m trying to get Tmobile 3g on the tab but no matter what modem i installed i`m always getting edge.. I tried with roto modem switch.. but still no 3g.. Tried to flash with tmobile stock modem but no 3g..
Model number GT-p1000M (SGHI987)
Firmware 2.3.6
Baseband T849UVjjB_ROTO-3G (after useing roto modem switcher)
Kernerll 2.6.35.7
Overcome-v4
I have tried the froyo, gingerbread now trying it to get 3g on overcome..
Please suggest me if i have to make any other changes to get 3g on tmobile network..
Thanks
bell mobility tab no 3g on tmobile
No one is having this issue ?
No 3g, just Edge signal
I too have a similar problem with no 3g signal. I'm in Bolivia and I have 3g coverage with my provider. I had upgraded to Gingerbread in hopes this would solve the problem. No 3g. I then installed the different modems and I still had the same (no 3g) problem. After this didn't work I went back to Froyo as a last ditch attempt since I had rooted Froyo in the beginning and thought maybe something got messed up. I've never seen a 3g signal here and don't know about the U.S since I've only use it here. Is it possible that the Galaxy Tab 7 3g just does not work in Bolivia? By the way, I've checked all settings and done everything to make sure things are correct. Any ideas? Thanks.
for @polapine, this is answered in another thread.
Basically the conclusion is that T-mobile uses different frequency for 3G/HSDPA, that a normal unbranded tab modem hardware is simply incapable of using. (1700 Mhz)
On the other hand, a T-Mobile branded tab can also operate at the "usual" 3G band in other networks in Europe/Asia/Australia (2100 MHz)
I have a galaxy tab 7 from T-mobile. I have updated my firmware to newest overcome rom but I don't know what modem I should use for it. I live here in the Philippines which is part of Asia. I want to use a modem with call and 3g function. Additionally, when changing modem, will it wipe out my system? Thanks in advance.
I have the T-Mobile SGH-T849 too.
Use JPZ modem in Asia/Australia/Europe should be fine.
No, flashing modem will not wipe your system.
After flashing go to setting About Phone and check your baseband
it should have changed to something-something-JPZ
yup, I'm using JPZ on my tab, but I don't have 3g.. i only have edge.. can I still revert back to having 3g instead of call?
which network in the Philippines? maybe we can find out what frequency your network use.
It is weird. I thought asia uses GSM 900/1800MHz and HSPA at 2100MHz, which is what the JPZ does.
The original modem (JJB) can be found here.
http://devphone.org/files/gtab7/modems/
But T-Mobile modem is meant for T-Mobile user to have 3G, even them won't get voice call with it.
Are you sure your area has good 3G reception?
I'm not familiar with frequencies and such, but i'm using Smart here in the Philippines. Can you help me determine what network I should use?
http://obsessivecoder.com/2010/09/19/philippines-gsm-frequency-band/
Smart Communications 900 MHz/1800 MHz W-CDMA (UMTS) 2100 MHz
Exactly the same as other GSM I know in Singapore/Indonesia/Australia
Can you check your setting just to make sure you are not restricting your wireless to 2G only?
EDIT: I am not sure if you edited your post. But I thought I read you get E only.
Now I can't see any of that in your post.
Do you get mobile network working at all?
If not, then the issue is with your APN.
You need the right APN for Smart
i've set it on wcdma but it does not pickup any signal. i still only have edge.
Menu -> Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Uncheck .. only 2G
I got more info on APN:
APN Settings for Smart Bro
Postpaid APN: smartbro
Prepaid APN: smartbro
APN Settings for Smart Buddy, Smart Gold
APN: internet
i'm still on EDGE.
Last try:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...rk-frequency-your-samsung-i9000-galaxy-s.html
forget about the references to 850MHz,
access the menu and make sure you have stuff selected for 900MHz 1800MHz and 2100MHz
normally we have 3G on 900 and 1800, and 3.5G on 2100MHz
still not working
you can confirm that the same SIM card in other phone, at your present location, gets 3G?
yup, on my galaxy y, 3g is ok
and APN in that phone is the same?
EDIT: try other modems. KM2 for example
went back to t-mobile modem for the mean time. will try out km2 later. from the modem list, most of them are for gingerbread 2.3.3, but mine is 2.3.6. will there be any conflict with that?
nope.
even froyo modem works.
we use JPZ through to ICS as well.
Does T-mobile modem gives you 3G?
yup, it gives me full hsdpa connection speed.
hi mahan21,
Not sure if you are still looking for the modem.
try T959UVJL5 modem from the Galaxy S T-mobile.
I was baffled because I am really sure I get 3G/H on JPZ but I check again I can't.
I even restock to GB stock safe, no luck.
So after searching, I found the JL5 modem
and it works!
3G/H and voice call on T-mobile tab in Asia (Well, Optus Australia but it is the same GSM/UMTS combination)
Get the modem here:

Hello.... Running Pure Nexus 6.0.1 with latest 32R modem and I'm not getting any HSPA data connections...it connects to the UMTS*384, but won't connect to TMO via H/H+...I live in Iowa and we do not have any LTE coverage in Iowa and we rely on HSPA for near 4G connection speeds...I've tried all the radios from TMO 5.1.1 to the latest 32R...does anyone have any suggestions to fix my HSPA connection issues? I'm not sure if 5.1.1 displayed the same issues, but I'd like to find a solution that fixes my data connection. Nick

you can try dialing *#*#4636#*#*, then choosing phone info, then set your preferred network type as wcdma.
