Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha has just unveiled the Motorola Droid Bionic at the company's CES 2011 press event. The new smartphone will run on Verizon's 4G LTE network and sports dual 1GHz processors, a 4.3 inch quarter-HD display and front and rear-facing cameras. It also appears to be running an updated version of Motorola's Motoblur interface.

My nipples get hard everytime I read those specs. Now this is what I thought the htc thunderbolt was gonna be like.
I am still a little stunned that sprint hasn't really had anything going on for them, it just makes me feel like a red headed step child being left out.

Hopefully Sprint is holding out for CITA. That's where the Evo 4G was announced.
both phones have sweet specs even the lg opt x2. i surely hope sprint will be getting a rockin dual core phone, if so, bye bye evo

What interested me was the orientation change animation. Some one needs to port that to CM (or whatever ROM you like) ASAP. The quick change with no transition looks so cheap and unsophisticated to me.
I'm sure sprint will have an new Evo-esque phone sooner than late. At&t and Verizon both have basically the incredible hd which is essentially a slightly upgraded Evo. That will probably be the look of the new Evo.
I actually think it will work to Sprints advantage to wait for the hype around Verizon and at&t to die down. I think they will announce some new high end Android phones as well some WebOS devices in the coming months. I'm sure HP will be trying to make some noise.

Would be nice to get one of their high end phones. I love this Bionic btw. I just got my Evo last November and I love it, but all these new phones just blow it out the water. Going to have to wait a while to get an upgrade too...
i agree however its been pretty much high end phones are as follows, with some exceptions. it seems each vendor has paired up with a service provider, but it looks like that is changing with LTE/wimax getting more focus

Atrix > bionic methinks...This video of the atrix makes everything else look silly. The docking ability of this thing is amazing. Now I'm left wondering how long it'll take sprint/HTC to come up with anything to compete.

Will the Bionic have a locked down bootloader like the droid x?
I have no knowledge on the subject, but I can only assume that it will.

I love this community, and the ability to try others' work. I think Moto will keep their products locked to a degree. Done with them yet holding on to my Droid.
Who knows though now that Xoom is unlocked, maybe Moto finally got the hint. We can all wish, but until the release comes, we won't know for sure
The Atrix 4G got locked down, but hopefully we will have better luck..... My Droid Eris is feeling slower by the day, but I won't use my upgrade on a locked-down phone.
I remember reading from a few different places that the bionic has a good chance of being unlocked. That's because the chip they are using in the bionic vs. D2 and dx. The d2 and x have a certain chip that needs to locked down or something but since the bionic has the Tegra processor it won't have that special chip. I hope this is the case.
is this phone even worth getting? i'm due for an upgrade and they been trying to throw the iphone4 at me but i've been waiting for this...now i wonder if this is a waste of time... my eris is driving me crazy so i want something fairly soon...this phone seems to be the only worthy choice though for verizon customers...are there any other competitive options besides this phone without switching carriers?

Thunderbolt? They believe they have a root for it already. And for sure is unlocked. It's for sure gonna have a great dev community.

The atrix boot loader is signed not encrypted
I expect the same will happen to the bionic as its basically an atrix with less RAM and a larger screen

Good News!!! And I definitely want the Bionic because the Thunderbolt is essentially the Evo 4g with less battery but more ram(768mb vs 512mb). It also is essentially the same thing as the Droid Incredible, but with 512mb vs 768mb of ram.

devs are working to see if we can bypass it or something....but at least it isn't encrypted which gives the devs a slightly higher chance of finding a fix vs having the bootloader encrypted
Not to get get off topic but I wish the root population was larger. Then when motorola does encrypt their phones then it's not like the lesser 5% of the phone purchasers being upset about it. Me getting this phone depends on if it's unlocked or not. I have friends all the time ask me to root their phone. I have a few friends that run custom roms that I put on. Not one of them has had a problem(knock on wood) I don't see a big risk in rooting and flashing custom roms, especially with how easy it is nowadays. That's my 2 cents

I know that, but it's better news than if it was encrypted and/or had something similar to an e-Fuse, and that's what I meant in good news. I knew it wouldn't be the same as a Nexus S or Nexus One (which are Dev friendly), but my Eris had a bootloader (S-On) which so far as I can see is the same as a signed bootloader (correct me if I'm wrong). Hopefully, it'll just be a couple of weeks/months to crack it but (knock on wood) at least we won't be stuck with the situation Droid X owners have.
Also, unrelated note, but I played with a friends Atrix 4G for about 30 minutes, and a couple things......
Good
1. Fast as hell! (In apps, games, typing, etc) Very lag free! (see below)
2. In game, incredibly smooth and great looking screen. Better than other friend's Droid Incredible, and colors look nearly as good as my old Zune HD.
Bad
1. Home screen lags quite badly. My friend had lots of apps on desktop and though the Live wallpaper and app drawer were smooth, switching left to right was laggy.... Very nitpicky but annoying.
Overall, I still want the phone (more than before), and want Cyanogenmod on this thing badly!

Not really, the thunderbolt has a new generation snapdragon, between that and the extra ram, and better video processor, it's actually WAY faster than an Evo 4G. Out of the box quadrant scores are around 1975, and general performance is really much better than an Evo in every way. (not saying it's faster than a bionic obviously, but it definitely isn't the same thing as an Evo).

Thanks for clarifying. When I looked to check facts for the comparison, it only said 1 ghz Snapdragon, so I assumed the same CPU/GPU as the first gen.
still the tegra 2 is a faster processor ... otherwise its more of a wait and see...
I have decided to wait for the bionic instead of getting the thunderbolt... unless the tb comes out tomorrow... but that is very unlikly.
im so sick of seeing people compare the evo to the thunderbolt, first things first, LTE is better than WiMAX. Second of all the processor arent even close, and you know on the evo if you use a task killer, it might have 250mb or RAM free, when you do it on the bolt, you will have overmb free, it will never lag. ever. and the only time it will fall behind the bionic or atrix is gaming, thats it

I'm still getting the G2X. 1.2GHz? Please, we'll have a modified kernel sporting 1.2 in no time. As for the ram, it won't be too noticeable since what's actually available to the user is what matters. You can check that using Advanced Task Killer. Also, from the vids, the G2X looks quicker and smoother when opening apps and home screen transitions. That's because it's running pretty much stock. I can't wait to see how blistering fast it is when it gets GB. A couple other things to note, G2X gets two speakers and sensation only gets the same crappy one on the back, that whole "unibody" aluminum surrounding the phone is actually all on the battery cover.

Paul of modaco asked HTC and they replied that htc sensation will have a locked bootloader.
I still will prefer g2x cause i do not like sense. Sense with all of its 3d effects and unnecesary features are such big memory huggers. Anyways i can easily oc my 2x to 1200 without any side effects.
And 4.3 inch are not my type. Too big for a phone and drains more battery. 4 inch is better for me. And only 1 gb internal memory is not good

However, unlike the Tegra 2, the dual core Snapdragons can clock cores independently of each other. This will improve performance and battery life.

I'm one of the first people to say "Unused RAM is wasted RAM", and 512mb has been more than enough for most people. The big question mark is what kinds of requirements apps and the OS will have in the near future, once Ice Cream drops. Also, I hope you aren't advocating the use of task killers
Not to take anything away from the G2x, it's still a great phone, and one that I'm planning on getting if it ships with an unlocked bootloader.
Am only considering the G2X over here (US) because of the additional AT&T data bands. is still a toss-up as to whether the AT&T gets done, but I will not be getting anything on TMo over here with only their frequencies until whatever happens is final.
If I decide to keep G2X after the return period is up, my MT4G will be heading promptly to eBay. Buyers will have choice of fully rooted with CM7.0.0 or stock - rooted or unrooted - lol.

I've been searching on the different GPU's involving the Orion SGS2 and the Snapdragon 2... and I think Nvidia is really pushing mobile games and with NVidia support will only equal it being around longer. Plus the Motorola Xoom is Google's main platform for honeycomb and it uses the Tegra 2 for GUI acceleration.

Here's my 2 cents/rant:
I love the 4.3" screen over the 4". However, HTC has ruined the Sensation. How? First, I do not like HTC Sense, which wouldn't be a problem if I could load whatever firmware or ROM I wanted onto the phone. However, if the Thunderbolt teaches us anything, it's that HTC is going to become more and more like Motorola--who knows if the Sensation will have an encrypted bootloader?
So for me it's the (IMO) superior screen but awful Sense versus the inferior screen but the ability to do what I want with my $500 or $600 mini computer/phone.
And might I add that Sense is even more intrusive now--have any of you seen how HTC has destroyed the pull down menu on the Thunderbolt? WTF?!
Now to continue the rant: why should I even stay with T-Mobile? AT&T is simply and utterly terrible. They ought to be sued and investigated for their false advertising of 4G speeds. I went into an AT&T store the other day to check out the Atrix. I ran speed test on the Atrix and got around 1mbps down and only 0.3 mbps up. On my Vibrant, which technically isn't even HSPA+, I got 1.5 mbps down and 1.2 mbps up consistently in the same location. So [email protected]#$ AT&T, why would I want to stick with T-Mobile only to be forced to have AT&T take over my contract? AT&T purposely cripples the upload speeds on their phones advertised as 4G. [email protected]#$ them and their awful customer satisfaction and rate plans.

The HTC Sensation will have a 4GB Rom however 1gb will be allocated to the data partition for apps, the rest will be allocated to the system, cache, recovery partitions etc.

No no, task killers are definitely bad unless you have a G1 like me. They are useful for telling someone how much available memory their phone has, though.

I think the discrepancy is due to the differences between the T-Mobile version and the international version. I mean, look at the specs of the Desire vs. Incredible vs. N1.

It is out now - ordered on. I have 20 days to try it and return it if not satisfied. I want to see if "8 GB storage, 512 MB RAM" is going to be a factor. I will be rooting it and installing a different ROM and moving the larger apps where possible over to the SD card.

When I purchased my D3, I had wished there was a decent option for a 4g Verizon Keyboard phone. Only 2 and a half months after I purchased my d3, the d4 was released. I felt that had I done my research I might have waited.
Now, I'm doing my research. Seems to me that the hardware of the D4 will take time before becoming outdated, compared to the D3 which was more or less outdated when released. [Let's face it, 512mb of ram is not enough] and 4g was already in existence.
Is there another 4g keyboard phone that is known to be "just around the corner" from Verizon? Or should I jump on the D4 now, and enjoy 1 gig of ram, 4g connectivity, and ICS that works?

Let's really think about this, as I am pretty sure a lot of us are in the same boat as you are. You're probably upset about not having ICS on your D3, as am I. You understand that because the lack of memory in the d3 that it's a hardware limitation, and the 4G LTE service.
Let's look at some of the facts now:

3) the D3 has a nice removable battery, and if you're anything like me, you might have invested in an extended battery, screen protector and possibly a case, which won't fit the new D4.

Before I go through the motions of getting a new phone, I realized that I have a list of requirements. If you read above, those are the things that I'm most concerned with. Hashcode and dhacker got the ICS hwcodecs working on the razr with the razr build leak... If you ask me, I'm pretty confident they will figure out a solution for the folks who don't want to be on the leak....which should trickle down to us at some point.
My overall recommendation:
If you want ICS on a keyboard phone, wait for ICS to get pushed to D4, then buy it (are you missing out on anything by waiting?). If hashcode and the gang haven't figured out the d3 by then, I'msure d5 or d6 leaks will be coming out ;-)

I'd expect it to be closer to the 3 months at most. There is an official ICS update that was leaked a couple of weeks ago for the D4 that reports show to be very stable and very complete. Might not be the final version...but it's very close.

So far, only one phone manufacture and one device announced by them has 2 GB of RAM. This hasn't become a standard yet at all. 1 GB is the standard.

This applies to any device at any update/upgrade point. Minimal cost additions (case, dock, etc..) and can be sold with the older device to increase its sale potential/price.

There are no Google documents that say ICS requires 1 GB of RAM, why would "Jellybean" require 2 GB? Plus, even announcing a new version of the OS doesn't mean we'll see it anytime soon on any device other than a Nexus....which may not make it to Verizon this go.

None of any manufactures lineups have intel chipsets and only a few are quad core...and 99% of all the LTE devices are being stepped down to dual core vs. their quad core counterparts (3G/GSM) variants.
I've made the jump....my Droid 4 will be here tomorrow. 1 GB RAM (vs. 512 MEG), LTE (vs. 3G), improved Keyboard, 1.2 Ghz CPU clock (vs. 1.0 Ghz), ICS officially coming....those were all good reasons (IMHO) to jump. With Verizon announcing the death of unlimited plans on renewals.......and I bet they also stop allowing 3G to 4G data changes at the same time....I wanted to be locked in on unlimited 4G now.....just to be safe.
I paid full retail, if an upgrade was available...I'd have done it the day my upgrade was available.

OK, ratman's theory of phone purchases: Never spend more than $50 on a phone. That's why I, like you, got a D3 not long before the D4 release. My wife actually got her D3 for free AFTER the D4 release. when you only spend $50 or less on it then you don't feel so bad when it becomes obsolete a couple of months later (as they almost always do). We got our D1's when they were two for $99 with renewal BTW.
So, since you have an upgrade coming, I'd say wait. Unless you are just pining away for 4G, a D4 isn't all that big an upgrade compared to a D3 until ICS comes out for it. On that it depends if you insist on the VZW official release or are willing to accept a leaked variant. By the time an official VZW release comes out, there will be new phones out and the D4 will become the $50 bargain basement phone...but still a great phone..and that's the time to make the move. It will probably be a long time before something faster than 4G comes along and I think a D4 with ICS is going to have about as much "staying power" as any phone on the market.
Of course then, people will be whining about "why can't I get Android 5.0, or 6.0 or 27.6 etc, etc.

Will you risk having your phone on an unsupported update path? If you do, that's fine, go with the D4 now, hashcode and crew will sure have vanilla ICS running with hwcomposer as soon as he gets his D4.

I agree, Google doesn't have any specifications on this, but look at the amount of bloatware that Motorola has on their devices, "in order for carriers to sell their phones". Truley, I just want a stock android device with a keyboard. I don't think the RAZR or D4 will get the next up and coming version of android, and considering that the D3 hasn't even been out on the market for a year it makes me very uncomfortable as to what the requirements of the next version of Android will be. If you take a look at Nexus S, they got ICS since it is a stock experience, the bloat factor is removed. On the other hand, Galaxy S, didn't receive ICS since they had TouchWiz on it, and after putting ICS base on that hardware, they probably wouldn't be able to upgrade all of the components and still have it run smoothly (due to RAM restrictions).
In fact, the D3 running stock GB was pretty crap with all of the bloatware installed. The phone ran so slow from day 1. I don't know how bad the D4 runs since I've never tried it, but I find D3 runs AOKP 10x better than it ran stock.

Actually, up in Canada here, our LTE is different. We only have it running on AWS bands, and I don't think the D4's LTE will be compatible with the Canadian standards. That's another reason I'm waiting to make the jump.

Again, not applicable to Canada; we don't have Verizon changing our data policies down here. Although, the shared data option I don't think is too bad! I'd like to have my tablet and phone sharing the same data plan without incurring extra fees.
No, no intention of getting off the official update path. Just pointing out how complete the "leaked" ICS build is....that I expect the official release closer to a 3 month max time frame and not six months later.
The OP is on Verizon, so will have to worry about their data package plans/changes.

Danifunker yur speculations are pretty wild. To the OP. I recommend not getting moto at all. They are on a downhill path but if your looking for an awesome keyboard go for it. Its thinner, faster, and has ICS already. Its not official but i believe one of the posts in the dev forum showed an sbf workaround for that.
Standards do not upgrade very often. 2gb will probably be top of the line next year but 1gb phones will still be considered fast. 2gb will not become a standard for a long time because that would leave only one damn device able for the market. Meaning everyone without that device would be outdated. Sound right? No. His speculation was wild. D4 is an alright upgrade. Personally i would get off the moto path and go to samsung or htc. Either way, your device will be good for atleast a year. Even if the do the d5 in six months. Knowing moto, it wont run jellybean either.

What is so much better about HTC than Samsung, besides the part that Moto makes your phone outdated every 4-6 months.
Wow, some amazing responses. If I got the D4 I would definitely be running the leaked ICS update. They have found a way to keep root when you update, and now that it has been released I assume custom ICS roms will be released on the fully functional Motorola kernel soon enough with working video camera and such.
(Excuse me if any of my term were wrong, I dont know as much as I pretend to.)

RAM, I only know that my D3 is always low on ram. I frequently like to run music in the background (Slacker radio, cached on my device) while also running navigation, and texting, and it has ram issues regularly. I have almost NO widgets, and I restart my phone twice a day. However, my tablet does great with its 1 gig of ram, never come close to having a ram problem. I know that not being a phone it has advantages, but still. I cannot imagine Android 5.0 or even 6.0 getting so bloated and horrific that it REQUIRED more than 1 gig of ram. 512 aint enough, but I cannot imagine how I would use 2 gigs....
So what could the Droid 5 (Or even the droid 6) have that the droid 4 doesnt?

Droid 5 will most likely have another redesign.. or just a sharper looking razr. Def 720p Super Amoled. Doubt it iwll have quad core, prob dual core s4 or superly high clocked omap. Unlocked bootloader is unlikely, so is removable battery, unless it gets a redesign and is not like the razr anymore. Most of motos upgrades from phones, are nothing but a redesign and newer software.. pretty sad how phones they made last year are still just as good as the ones this year.

What rom are you running, and what apps do you use? Because I've been on stock ROM on and off since I got my D3 six months ago, and it's absolutely not enough. Launching the camera closes the launcher. Load a WAP site on the browser, hit Home to load the launcher and go immediately back into the browser and it still has to query the network to refresh all 10k of that mobile webpage. Facebook takes a full 15 seconds over a 18mbps Wifi connection to load a photo. Sometimes the launcher gets so slow you have to pull the battery to restart the phone, and all this is AFTER the official OTA upgrade released a few weeks ago.
I'm absolutely not arguing that 512MB shouldn't be enough RAM for Android, as somehow 256MB was enough to run Gingerbread on my HTC Aria with none of these symptoms. It's just not enough on THIS phone for the software it ships with.
AND OF COURSE, WHY THE FSCK DID IT SHIP WITH 512MB OF RAM IN THE FIRST PLACE AFTER THE ATRIX SHIPPED EIGHT MONTHS PREVIOUS WITH 1GB.

See, I could never get another HTC phone because no phone with Sense works with Bluetooth controllers of any kind, that I know of. Or did they change that? All the Market apps I can find that work with a PS3 or Wiimote still say Sense phones won't work. Plus, do you know they launched the Aria on AT&T but never made a single accessory for it, not a car charger, dock, cradle, nothing? I can't have that absolute lack of accessory support, which is one thing that keeps me with Motorola in the end.

I kind of agree, It unlikely the Droid 5 will be THAT much greater than the Droid 4. Which is why I am tempted to get the Droid 4, and just plan of having it a long time. My favorite thing about ICS is the built in spell check, and I dont know a damn thing about Jelly bean, or what will make it so incredible.

I meant to say Moto over HTC. And 512 is fine for me, I have no problems at all with my phone. Never use any more than 300mb of ram. But yeah, moto is dumb. Phones out with 720p screens a year before moto can do it.. but at least they can get a battery right

Who knows what's really in the works now, but there haven't been many 2012 phones announced yet this year other than the HTC one series, a couple of LG phones and the galaxy S3. Motorola did say that they will be partnering up with Intel, with their medfield architecture earlier this year. I'm just saying, we don't know what's coming this year.

Personally I don't find that sad at all. I think the expectations are too high as far as wanting to see a breakthrough device every time. I think the Original Droid (D1) was such a device but those are going to be very few and far between regardless of manufacturer. You don't expect a breakthrough in desktop or laptop PC's every single year, do you? Its a sign of an industry reaching maturity.
When an industry is new, technology as well as the uses people find for the technology advance rapidly. But that can't go on forever. As a technology becomes more mature the pace slows down as does the urge for constant upgrades. Once again looking at desktop PC's, for most people once they had a Core 2 Duo generation machine, they finally had something that could do pretty much everything they wanted to do with such a device. The majority of people can't do their work any faster or better with the latest and greatest i7 quad core. Phones will eventually be the same.
That's why I say get off the upgrade treadmill. As I have said before I never pay more than $50 for a phone. If next year's phones are little better than this year's, so what? Then the D4 will be the $50 phone and that's the time to get one.

I dont expect every release to be a breakthrough, but at least significantly better, if its not going to be they should stop coming out with so many new devices. D2 was what the droid 3 should have been, droid 4 should have been droid 3. X2 should have been bionic, bionic should have been razr, razr should have been what this new upcoming fighter should be. Motorola sucks.

Looks like shiit and has shiit specs to begin with. It has lower battery capacity than the original atrix which is unacceptable.
Only .5 Ghz (no extra core) more then original stuff plus little more pixels and no finger print reader. i only have two words for Motorola "Middle Finger" cos they probibally wont even unlock the boot loader hack they are trying to block the boot loader on existing phones.

Atrix is a line of webtop supporting devices, processor/ram specs should be top priority and it already seems outdated with S3 having quad core and 2gb ram.
I can live with 2 powerful cores, but the phone is just screaming for a ram upgrade.
As a big fan of the original Atrix, I can't be any more disappointed with the 2 sequels.
AtrixHd fails for me for no fingerprint unlock button, only 1GB of RAM, low battery that appears non-removable (if you want to "look" like the RAZR Maxx then use their freakin battery), locked bootloader, and it only has HALF the internal storage as our phone.
Atrix HD has nothing that I want. Even the "updated screen" is just gonna kill the battery.
It's a shame that the OG Atrix>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Atrix HD>Atrix2...

I'm struggling to decide whether this new Atrix HD is simply unimpressive or really unimpressive.
The dual-core thing isn't necessarily too much of a problem - hopefully it is Qualcomm Krait-based in which case, performance would be on a par with a quad-core A9. The smaller battery (in comparison to the original Atrix) doesn't exactly sound like a great idea, especially as the phone has a large HD display and is packing LTE...
I thought I had read somewhere recently that Motorola wasn't going to abandon fingerprint-scanners in high-end phones? Doesn't appear to be the case at present.
pre installed with ICS? I guess it will take more than 1 year to upgrade to Jelly Bean. Lol..

This is in my opinion another downgrade from the Atrix 4G, just like the Atrix 2!

Apparently according to Briefmobile, Motorola uses model numbers in the 900's for "high end" phones. This puts all the Atrix models in the "medium" bracket.

I don't see any logical reason to upgrade to this piece of **** from my original atrix.
I almost forgot to add that the at&t logo looks like sheep poo.
So its compatible with the lapdock 100, so i would be interested to know if its compatible with the 500 with the ethernet, video out and sd card reader. That would at least give it something over the original atrix.
The atrix line is basically there for people who uses at&t and want webtop.

Internal 8gb?
So my Atrix 4G has 16gb internal & this has 8Gb not much of an upgrade really, might be better camera, but now looks like I will be leaving Motorola??

It is weird how they are moving backwards with the Atrix line. I'd love to have the 1.5ghz dual core and I'm a sucker for big screens. Why can't they make a phone with our Atrix specs...just updated hardware (faster CPU, more ram, screen..)
