Should I install froyo?

Hey guys. Just got a captivate a few days ago and I love it except for the gps. I was just wondering if the leaked build of froyo improves the gps at all and if its worth updating before they release the official one. If so, where can I find the latest version of the leaked build? Thank you for any help.

The leaked Froyo does not necessarily improve on GPS because many people don't have issues where many people do. Give it a shot and search different methods of changing your LBStestmode settings to see what works. Second, for me it was worth installing as 2.2 offers stuff you cant have on 2.1 such as the newer Gmail, flash 10.1 and other goodies. It is faster as well. Search the threads in the Dev section for different ROM's and how to flash. Ask questions about flashing after doing exhaustive searching because you will be able to find most answers in those threads.

I'm kinda on the fence about this as well. I should be getting my Captivate tomorrow and I have been doing a crap ton of research in the past few days. Everything I have read points to either the "Official Leaked Froyo 2.2" or the newest "Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1". My only concern is the known issues that are listed on the Cognition website...
MMS won't work if you have "(" or ")" in your phone numbers
Contact groups sometimes opens the wrong group, you can fix this by replacing it with an I9K contacts.apk, but then you lose AT&T contact syncing
No Voodoo voices, supercurio is working on this (first boot will take awhile, be patient!)

Is this true with both builds listed or just with the Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1? I'm also completely new to Android being that I am a fomer iPhone junkie. So any help, how-to's, or info would be appreciated. In all honesty I was going to start here, youtube.com/watch?v=S9YnSVvfHpQ and if that wasn't successful go ahead and try Cognition. I'm just the type of person that likes to have things working properly and fast, like everyone else.
And for those wondering why I have been a member for over two and a half years and this is my first post, I have usually been able to find what I need and not had to ask questions.

I would point out that DesignGears has a perfectly rockin' cognition for eclair too. My first flash was 2.1.4 and it was amazing compared to stock eclair.
nothing really helps the gps, you either got it good, or not. (much research into that opinion btw.)
Cog 8.1+ is the shiz atm.
There's a couple of other froyo flavors also. I wouldn't go back to eclair at this point.
If nothin' else, it's a crap ton of fun flashin' and figuring stuff out. I'd do it just for that.
Not sure on MMS. I had no problems with it, but my numbers were already formatted without the parenthesis.

The ability to do these type of things is what lead me to the Android platform over the iPhone OS, it's just too locked down even with it being jailbroken IMHO. I'm just basically looking for a point of refferance I suppose. Basically the things to do and not to do to the phone you know. For me it's more of a challenge because I'm learning something new. I don't know if it's because I'm not looking in the right places or what but it seems like step by step guides are hard to come by regarding this stuff.

unless you use the i9000 ROM with captivate kernel, all Captivate Froyo builds are based off the captivate beta of Froyo.
It had a enough bugs that i rolled back to 2.1. Don't get me wrong, it is stable - but I figure i will wait for a more bug free beta to be the basis of my Froyo jump.

Not so much. You just gotta be patient and diligent. There's a couple of gems laying around but they are usually in the middle of a thread. The cognition thread for example. It's a beast to keep up with but given time you can digest most of what you need there. And there are plenty of links throughout that will clarify or intimidate as your experience and skill allow. Trouble is there's a TON of junk because people get impatient, or lazy I guess. Same questions, over and over.
I came to the captivate from a blackberry. Not much customization goin' on there. So as a stone noob, I read the cognition thread from post 1. All of it. I am a pretty confident android operator now. And I can't read nor write a line of code. In any language!
And you can too. Get busy, Grasshopper.

If you live on campus or rely on some sort of enterprise WIFI then go to froyo. Using eclair I could NEVER connect to the wifi at my school. It would say that I was connected of course but no data would transfer.
I switched to Froyo and haven't had problems since.
Also, my GPS is rockin!

alphadog, what "bugs" did you have when using Froyo? And what you mentioned is a lot of where my confusion comes into play, "kernals and ROMs" are like greek to me and I have no idea what they are or what the difference is between the two.
Sulphur, thanks so much for the advice. I'm gonna go check out the Cognition thread now and see what I can dig up. That's really what I needed, just a starting point. I'm thinking as of now I will go with the latest Cognition build for a bit and see how that goes.
DirtyRasa, no campus here but I do rely on wi-fi pretty heavily. I use it at home all the time to cut down on charges to my bill for data usage, so that's good to know. Just curious though, are you using the leaked Froyo or the Cognition build? And if you have had both which one do you prefer?

More power to you. I see tons of people on here less than a month with hundreds of posts more than me.
-->Back on topic. YES go with Froyo! There are many options available, but for noobs, i'd reccomend the either a DG ROM or the leaked and tweaked.

Thats no problem mindburn. The more information the better. I actually flashed to the leaked froyo last night and so far so good. Gps is still horrible. I think im gonna try the cognition build tonight and see what I like better. Ill let you know.

Thanks man, almost sounds as though you are one step ahead of me actually. I get my phone tomorrow and I was going to actually try the leaked first and then cognition. Let me know how things turn out for you and I will in return do the same.

So I got the phone yesterday and let me say, when I got it out of the box I knew I was going to like it. This damn thing looks sexy as hell! Anyway, 10 minutes after I got it I had successfully upgraded to the leaked Froyo and rooted the phone. Everything is going fine and I haven't had any problems thus far. It is at times a little buggy but I have learned that if I kill some of the tasks, the speed seems to improve. I thought about try Cognition today but when I load it up, I've only got the odin.exe, PDA.tar, & PIT.pit. Do I have to have CSC & ETC file mentioned in the program as well? Also, what exactly are these things, I didn't have to do anything like this on the stock Froyo.

U should of done DG's AOSP beta 3! That's what I'm rocking and have had it for almost a month and its amazing! I wanted to use cognition but I read on ppl saying they had bugs or it just wasn't stable for them. But to each their own! Unfortunately when I last checked DG closed the thread on that ROM. Glad to know u got froyo going! I made the switch from an iPhone jailbroken to the captivate and it's amazing! I'm still new to android but u just gotta read everything and their r so many ppl who are willing to help!

With the announcement of the official froyo coming out in about two weeks, i think i'll just stay where I'm at for right now. I don't wanna try and win the triathlon with only a week training.

The pda and pit file are all you need. he just put everything in those two files. Flashes just fine that way.

Just a quick update for everyone, I am now running the latest Cognition 2.2 BETA 9.1.3. And I *MOD EDIT* love it! This thing is super fast now, pretty amazing really. I also somewhat have my homescreens the way that I want them as well. Only questions to everyone now is what do you all run? What are your must have and go to applications? Like the best of the best kind of thing.

Glad to hear it and no problem. My must have's are Launcher Pro, Root Explorer, xda app, and silly as it sound, beautiful widgets. I dunno. Taste has no template.

Gingerbread on the N1?

I am confused why there is no Gingerbread ROM out yet for the Nexus One.
Gingerbread is already running on the Droid Eris, but not the N1?
Kinda strange because the N1 is usually one of the first phones to get quick and dirty upgrade when an SDK is released.
I am dying to play around with Gingerbread. Is anybody working on a 2.3 ROM for the N1?

All of the Gingerbread "ports" your finding on other phones are from the SDK and are virtually useless. You wont see gingerbread on the nexus until it either gets leaked or until google publishes the code to AOSP.

Every Gingerbread ROM out now is pre-alpha build, with major problems in calling, wifi, and basically are to help people get working on them. Nexus One is about to get 2.3 along with the Nexus S so no one is bothering, plus the open source version is coming soon so why try to port rfe SDK?

I read somewhere that Samsung has an exclusivity deal with Google to be the first to have a phone with gingerbread. That would explain why they have been so careful not to have any leaks this time around.
No idea when this deal would expire...

So, we must to wait until Google release it ?

That still wouldn't explain the lack of a nexus leak. And it doesn't fit Samsung's business model...I mean, hell, the Captivate is still stuck on Eclair!

If you guys follow dj-steve on twitter then you will know he got honeycomb to boot on the s7. Great news. But to get it stable we need too have the kernel ported too 2.6.36. And maybe have the touch driver modified if that wasn't addressed in 2.6.36.
If you guys can ask around and see if anyone is willing to help with this you will be that much closer to hc. His twitter is @DMonsterProd follow him. And if you have any further questions regarding what needs to be done ask him through twitter he will respond.
Lets get some honeycomb small little step holding us back atm. Thanks peoples

Reach out to your phone kernel devs its what I'm going to do. We need to start some kind of bounty to get some interest in porting the kernel.

Yep folks contact as many users as pos. Throw it out on twitter etc. remember we have a near unbrickable device here so reflashing after a failed kernel attempt is as simple as hitting reset and loading into fastboot. And as hellzya said above the most critical issue preventing me releasing a prealpha build is touch screen driver being a bodgejob and not working properly. So if anyones got c coding skills that could be a place to start. Remember im working on 3 tabs and the ni adam is the base for my hc port which works accross most tegra 2 devices it would appear so updates are coming thick and fast.

[Q] New DS7 in the mail

Hey all, I'm a new DS7 owner (well, UPS is right now but I will be). My interest was grabbed when I heard the news about the official Honeycomb being released for the DS7. After some add'l reading around about it (including discovering Honeystreak), I decided to trade my Nook Color in for a DS7.
I'm by no means new to Android hacking but I am totally new to the DS7. So I was wondering if a couple peeps would mind helping me play catch-up so I know what all is going on with it. For example:
What's the recovery situation? I see a stickied CWM thread but I also see comments such as "I doubt we'll be seeing cmw any time soon since partitions keep changing and we all know how badly cmw has screwed.us in the past...". If not CWM, then whatcha got?
Are there generally-accepted bugs with the device that I should be aware of before I waste time banging my head against the wall? For example, all AOSP ROMs for the Thunderbolt have a GPS and Network Location bug, and MMS only works if Wifi is disconnected.
What firmware-flashing tool is used? (equivalent to Odin, HBoot, RSDLite, etc.)
What other things are there that I should know about that are specific to the DS7?
If not here on XDA, where is DJ Steve posting new HoneyStreak updates?
I appreciate your help and a bit of patience while I ask the dumb questions.

Hey Jax, good to see a fellow Thunderbolt owner over here, well....the rom game is slow around these parts. Most owners including myself are waiting for the official 3.2 ota which may be days or weeks away for the wifi model. DJsteve is the streak dev but has CHOSEN to take his work elsewhere due to GPL issues.
The known bugs or issues for the most part have been well documented, battery life and screen, although I wouldn't call the later a "bug". Battery life is supposed to be addressed in the ota as well. In my opinion this is going to be a sweet little tab once 3.2 arrives and will hopefully attract some devs.

Welcome to the Streak7 world. I too am a new DS7 user (wifi only). Only just getting mine back on the 2nd of Sept. I used the stock rom and thought it was a decent running system. In fact, I kinda disagreed with most who said it was a bit sluggish, as mine seemed to run quite well. Got my DS7 on Friday afternoon,by late Saturday night I had it rooted to Honeycomb.Why live with last years model when you can have this years model. I worked under that for a few days to see how it ran. Then I went back to the stock Dell rom for comparison. Well... after going back to the stock rom I saw just what everyone was saying about it being sluggish. Now granted the stock rom ran fine & I was fine with it untill I rooted. Then I got spoiled. SO not only does the stock rom run a bit slower, it has a lot of bloat. (as one would expect). Going over to the root rom fixes these issues. Its a clean fast running system now. I have not found any troubles with the rom Im using or the stock rom. I think you'll be happy with the DS7 & even more so after rooting it.
I use DJ_Steve's HoneyStreak HD7 2.0 (3.2)R4 (Going to R5 today as he just posted the R5 yesterday) & I love it. You'l need to install R2 first,then update to R4 or R5.

Before you go installing HC, can you check what stock rom you have installed first?
The version is in system -> about phone
You might have a newer version rom then what's available. Dell has been releasing most of their updates as preinstalled only recently.

I bought mine used on Ebay. I had honeycomb on it within 3 hours of playing with my Streak.

Yeah, mine is the same. Several other people noted the same thing, and curiously still it does not have the OTA even though the official one works just fine. Look in Settings, I suspect you have a 338.
Probably the best thing to do is go over to where DJ Steve is now and install his latest ROM.. I am soon, but right now there's some weird problem where the display blinks randomly so I'm waiting for that to get figured out.

Why go through the extra steps of a rom when you can just force the official one on your DS7. It's been posted. Pop this in your browser:

Because Steve's ROM is much better than Dell's, obviously.

Yeah, that's why his thread hasn't been touched since august 29th with zero updates since a bit before then. Once official HC hit everyone NV flashed back to stock and updated to official HC. But I'm sure you're right. A ported Xoom dump of 3.2 modified to work on the DS7 is going to be better than the official version made for it.

um.. Yeah. Look again, the mods here closed his thread because he couldn't provide the kernel source he's using. So he's on another forum now, with a large number of people using it. It's based on the official version, better setup, kernel, rooted, etc...
Use whatever you want.

Not that I mind standing corrected, but giving vague advice with no real direction doesn't really help the guy. You could at least point him in the right direction. Tell someone to just do "this" and assume he knows where to go or what to do doesn't really help.

There's a REASON that direct links arnt posted, since xda had issues previously with him and his source code, the right thing to do is not post direct links. (Though the sauce issue has resolved itself)
If you look at the other website they avoid linking back to xda.

Well I could care less about political crap on here and who has issues with what. If they want to flag my post, so be it. If the link is there, he can click on it.

I took the paddler's advice (and thanked).
Honeycomb works as advertised, though to tell the truth I haven't found a reason (yet) to prefer it over Froyo.

Just start roaming through the tablet oriented apps in the market. There are a few that make a difference. The one problem is if you already have vga res on your phone. The Dell just stretches it to a 7" screen, so you won't notice that much of a difference during normal use as you would if you had a 600p screen (like I have on my Evo View now, though it's only running GB).
