T-Mobile G1 activation with BlackBerry Data Plan? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, as my title says.
I'm trying to reactivate my G1 after letting it sit for about a year.
I decided to restore everything and I'm trying to use my friends BB sim card with data to activate it, but it says it cannot get a stable or reliable connection.
Any help?
I tried to do the bypass and I tried doing the <enter>reboot<enter> thing at the start screen, and I can only type numbers or letters.
Thanks

G1 setup questions.

just got a G1 with me. i dont have a t-mobile sim with me, but i know the first thing the phone goes to is to set up a gmail account. is there anyway round this?
would it work if i got a normal sim and just put credit on it, like say £10, and then the phone will just use up the credit to register with a gmail account? or do you have to absoloutely have some sort of special plan? i put in my blyk sim with an x-sim IV and it accepted the sim, thinking it was a t-mobile sim. but i dont have any credit on the sim so the connection times out, was thinking of putting some credit on the sim to see if it will connect?
cant you do the setup over wifi? but i cant get into any menus to set it up?
if you absoloutely have to get a bloody t-mobile web'n'walk plan then that, in my opinion, is just as bad as the whol apple ipone thing, what a rip, i'll be selling the phone then.
but if anyone know of how to get around this or if it'll work off credit, then please let me know.

i love you.
well i type in reboot and nothing happens oh well i guess its time to sell it, but do you know if it would be possible to activate over normal credit on your sim or does it have to have a special t-mobile data plan?

Search is your friend. The phone does not require TMo.
--M
well i used search and got nowhere. i found one thread about not needing a t-mob data plan but it requires access to the phones APN settings which i dont have
APN settings are available by pressing the menu button when in the setup. Can't remember if is right at the "Touch the android" or not. Just search the forum to get the needed APN settings for your carrier.
There are APN setting of different carriers in this thread
The way I did it without a data plan was to get someone that has a data plan and insert their Tmobile sim card in your G1. After you are able to log in, go into setting->data synch, and uncheck everything. Now you are able to use your Sim card and access the phone without the gmail authentication.

hard reset cause phone to lock

Can someone please help a n00b? I traded my G1 phone today to someone for their iphone. I popped my AT&T sim card in the iphone, works great. They put their AT&T sim card in the G1 (which I unlocked a day ago, and it was fine) but it prompted them to enter in their gmail user/pass. It says it cannot log in because they are not connected to a network. I was thinking that since I reset the phone back to factory settings that it re-locked it. Possible or no?
Thanks!
they need to read the forums on how to activate a G1 without a data plan. or you do and tell them. I highly recommend the search function.

How do i Disable emergency dial SIM lock

Ok guys, sorry if this is a newb question but i did allot of research before posting, if anyone has links that are know to work that will help.
Ive rooted a friends phone and put JacxHeroski on it, i found a few tip threads like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316&page=6 and this actually worked till i rebooted, now i get the (no sim card) warning and a emergency dialer so i cant access the home/touchflo screen.
My friend doesn't have a sim or data plan but just got a phone. I dont need to run it with another carriers sim, just no sim at all. Thanks for any help guys
I think you need a sim to get past setup, errrr maybe not though cuz hero roms shouldn't "require" it. Did it work fine when it was on the stock rom w/ no sim?

hero is goting to the no sim screen and onlt letting me access the dial pad for 911. i didnt do a account setup, but at first i got past it by issuing the recommended sqlite command and rebooting, but now its doing it again
JACxHero worked for me without a SIM card. I suggest wiping/reflashing.
Are you sure it's not just the normal lock screen? The lock screen for Hero with SenseUI is quite a bit different, and I know it'll show an error saying no SIM card, but if you hit menu or slide the window down it'll go away.
Just press the home button when that screen comes up. It's kinda annoying that you have to press home after pressing power ot wake up the phone. Why doesn't yout friend just get a pay as you go tmo SIM, and not use it? Won't cost you anything...
Is there anyway to disable the emergency dial capability. I am using my old G1 as a media pc remote control/vnc client/mp3 player/ web browser/ toy etc..... and i dont want my daughter to accidentally initiate an emergency call, or myself for that matter. is there something i could disable, or an app that would do this?
Thanks

Used G1 without web plan

If I buy a used G1 on ebay, can my neighbor just put her sim card in it without any web plan? She has a regular voice and text plan on T-Mobile with a cracker jack nokia flip phone and it's a hassle for her to send and receive texts. I figured she can get a phone with a keyboard and make her life easier.
Does she have to turn anything off so she doesn't get charged for web service?
without a data plan its gonna be hard to get past the activiation screen.
all she would need to do is
get a sim with someone who has data,
go through the setup creating her own gmail account
then when she;s at the home screen power off and swap sims again.
she wont have internet but the basics will work!
I have an iPhone on T-Mobile with data. So I can use my sim and put it in her G1 and where do I find the next steps in activating everything?
no sim = unpassable NO SIM screen.
sim without data = activation/learn how to use screen, cant continue after wanting to create gmail account
sim with data = get to step above but it will create the account and allow you through to the home screen.
so yes, as long as the sim has data, she should be ale to activate.
just remember to tell her that the phone is much more fun with data ;D
Thanks. Once I get her to see how much fun and easier to use a smart phone is I'm sure she'll eventually get a data plan.
actually I think the only way to get pass it is with a android data plan, Im not sure of the other data plans t-mobile has.
But I have had my G1 for a year w/o data.I got 5MB of free data when I bought it so you can try it even though your getting it used.I still had this problem when I was rooting it though because I had to log-in without the data.I did by going through the adb shell or something its kind of difficult.
Maybe someone else can give you more information
Ok I got it and I installed the sim card from my iPhone. I went through the activation process and I created a generic gmail account and have been using the G1 for the last 30 minutes. Have it also working through the wifi at home too.
Now I have to install her sim to see what happens.
Download APN droid so that her phone doesn't connect to data services. They will charge her per MB if she doesn't.
I got pretty good at modifying the iPhone and next week I have to learn the EVO. I hope what I learn with this G1 I can use with the EVO later!
I went into MARKET on the G1 and searched APN and all I got was APN Italy and APN Movilphone. Where do I get APN DROID and how do I install it?
The app's name is "APNdroid" by martin adamek. It's in the market.
I must be doing something wrong. I'm going into the market and searching for APNdroid and it keeps telling me
There are no matches in Android Market for the search : APNdroid
Do I have to be rooted or jailbroken or is it another Market not the one on the stock G1 ? Do I have to do it while connected on the cellphone or can I do it over wifi?
I'm not an idiot, I mean how hard is it to do a search, but this is making me nuts!!
OK Now I know what happened. I've been playing with the G1 since yesterday but for some reason today it decided to update its version. It asked if I wanted to update it and I said yes. Apparently the previous owner had never updated it. I now have a way prettier and more modern looking Market and it found the app quickly when I searched for it.
I installed the app and it's working great. I knew I couldn't be that dumb!
Thanks a lot for your patience.

[Q] Need help with G1 activation issue

Phone was factory reset after multiple issues and errors. I ditched the old SIM card in it and got a brand new one with a prepaid $3 for a day of use so I could activate the phone, but now I'm stuck on the Google activation screen, and if I make a new google account, it says the following:
"You don't have a network connection"
I checked the wi-fi setting and it says I do have one, and the SIM is registered with T-Mobile. I can't use any of the tricks I saw to bypass/skip the Google activation screen because there's no special ROM on the phone. Anyone able to help with this?
