[Q] Hard Bricked? Jig not helping - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was being a flashaholic, went from andro3, back to stock, then to Firefly, then followed instructions for SerendipityVII, got that working then tried to flash back to stock because Firefly was faster. It got into download mode and flashed, Odin said is passed and everything but i think the stock pda and pit files are mixed up with the GB Phone an CSC files. Jig is not working and the three buttons wont work, any ideas?

Are you getting any response out of it at all? Anything? Something to indicate whether it is trying to boot?
Sounds like you're not. Try removing battery, reinserting battery. DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS. Insert jig. Hold both volume buttons down. Wait a good minute or 2 if you still get nothing out of it then I'm afraid it's a brick. Sorry
You can either try and get a warranty replacement or mobiletechvideos.com offers a jtag debrickicking service.

What is jtag? I mean, waiting 2 weeks for replacement from samsung is a lot better than paying 50$ for that, but what is jtag(ging?)?

Jtagging is basicly a process where the mother board is taken off, hooking it to a jtag box so it can communicate with the computer at a lower level than the usb connection and reflashing bootloaders, then the super tricky part of soldering the mother board back on. The connections are about 1mm. The captivate is one of the hardest phones to jtag because of this reason. Mobiletechvideos.com is the only place that offers this outside of a warranty replacement.
It's june so that means that the first batch phones are either out of warranty or will be in a few weeks, them more and more phones will out of warranty every month.

You will need jtag if your looking for a repair. As mentioned I can do this for you and would love to if you need my help. Just pm me...I have almost 100% success rates with Captivates and have highly likely jtagged more than anyone in the world.

[Q]My captivate was bricked help!!!

First of all sorry for my bad English,I'm not a native. It happened when I was flashing back from i9000 rom to stock rom (I have no idea that it will brick my phone).I can't turn on my phone all I've got is black screen nothing shown up,no phone ! computer sign or Galaxy S logo.I've tried a several method to unbrick my phone but there is no luck for me.While I was trying to figured it out,my phone heated up like when you using it for a long time.Is there still a chance to get my phone back to work.I can't send it back to at&t,I'm not in the U.S.A.
Thanks

Will JIG really do the job ? I read some treads about this and it said JIG won't work if there are no phone!computer sign or galaxy S logo appear
anyway thanks for the help
Wouldn't hurt to try and you can make one for so cheap!
So...you get absolutely nothing out of it just a black screen and it heats up when plugged in, sounds like a brick to me. I'd still give a jig a try since they are easy to make and the parts are cheap, only when you try it take the battery out reinsert it, DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS, insert jig, then hold both volume buttons. If that doesn't work it's a brick. You can go directly through samsung for a warranty replacement. Never have to even have an at&t contact. depending on how you aquired the device they might replace it they might not. it might be iffy if you bought it used on ebay. Don't mention anything about a custom rom, say it happened using kies. If they don't replace it, go to mobiletechvideos.com he can jtag it for 50 u.s. Dollars plus shipping...

[Q] Another Brick Question

Hi guys,
I've read through the fourms, I know that a JTAG is the final option, but I wanted to run this by you guys before I resort to that.
Here's my scenero:
1st generation Captivate. I have flashed tons of times. I flashed back to Eclair 2.1 Stock. I was flashing with the I897UCK1+Odin-1 Click to then flash to gingerbread. However, during the flashing process it hung on the factory.fs. I got a blue screen on the Captivate---never happened before. I did the usual when Odin hangs -- I exited out of Odin and restarted the Captivate. However, it did not restart.
I get no booting signs or a charging symbol. It's a black screen. It does get warm when I plug it into the AC to charge --- so it's doing something. It's just not showing on the screen.
Tried the "pull battery, hold down 3-button, plug into usb" dance. I have a jig I made (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8) , haven't gotten it to work yet. Its only been about 2 hours or so though.
Any ideas? Anything is helpful before I resort to a JTAG send in or something.
Thanks.
If its not showing any sings of life, then i believe it is hardbricked.... Jtag isnt your only option you can do the Unbrickable Mod found here. Im almost certain its hard bricked, I've never had my phone compleatly unresponsive. But I could be wrong, anyone else confirm?
Right now all I am getting is some warmth when I plug it into a wall socket
If you have a Linux machine or a VM you can try this firsthttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257434

Thanks Captain_Nero, tried it with no success. I am going to get a 1k Ohm resister and add that to my Jig to see if it does anything.
I just sent this thing in for a port repair so I really do not feel like investing anymore money into it :-\
Unbrickable mod is what I would do before jtag. If its hard bricked.
Sent from my unbrickable cappy *bam*
Its better cost the same to do (in theory easier to obtain if you want to do it yourself) and will save you from future hard bricks. And in theory could open the doors to a bunch of things thats being dev at the moment.
How hard is it to do the unbrickable mod? I have no experience with a soldering gun.
Its easier then Jtag but its still hard. There is a thread in dev section look at it.

It's easier and cheaper. JTAG requires a minimum of 6 connections assuming you already have the JTAG setup. UnBrickable mod requires two. You must have soldering skills though. Once the mod is done, recovery is very easy. This thread will show you everything you need to know and lead you to the hardware modification thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242466 . I can do it for $35 including return shipping.

[Q] Bricked Captivate, at a loss here

A work friend of mine had his Captivate bricked mid update by his child.
I offered to fix it, brought it back by Heimdall (2.2). Charged it for about an hour and a half, then decided to try to upgrade it to gingerbread through Kies mini on my wife's laptop. It got stuck at 4%, and after a while I figured I could use Heimdall again, then flash 2.3 through other means.
Problem is now I can't get into download mode, nor powered on to the phone ! PC screen.
I owned a captivate before switching to Sprint, soft bricked it numerous times (Odin was my best friend) haven't ran into this problem before.
What next?

So...it does nothing at all? Just sits there like a bag o'marbles?
If so, Sounds like it failed while updating bootloaders, and if that's the case it's bricked, like brick bricked. Only unbrickable mod can bring it back.
On a side note FU kies for flashing the bootloaders FIRST, that's just dumb....they should be at the end so if it does disconnect or fail it would most likely be before it got to the dangerous part, making it a safer flash. Wtf were they thinking?
Kind of what I feared, thought it was odd that it crashed the phone that hard after only 4%.
Luckily he's already got a new phone, I was just curious if I could bring the old one back to life.
Was kind of hoping it might be a battery thing.

Heimdall does flash bl last. And when i make an Odin package with boots, i put them last in order.

That is incorrect. You could have Mobile Tech Videos JTAG it and resurrect it. Although the unbrickable mod is the prefered solution (Hence unbrickable) JTAG is for the people who have never held a soldering iron in their hands before. They are reliable and can have your phone running stock within 5 days of mailing it off.
Off topic: why would it be so hard for samsung to solder those couple wires that make up the unbrickable mod in factory during production. Theres another defficiency in over seas companies, they try to get off doing as little work as possible. When you make a phone running an open source OS, 99% some kid in his basement is going to mod it to perform better than stock OS. which is the case of most androids. Cmon' samsung! get your act together!
Yes....jtag can bring it back, but once and then it.can be bricked again, why do that when you can send it to mobiletechvideos and get unbrickable mod applied? he offers that service too.
a solution and then A chance to brick and have to send it off again, versus a solution that is done once and then after that is fixable by the user themself...i am aware of jtag but on phones that have unbrickable mod it's really just too antiquated to be a viable option, which is why i didn't mention it.

Was not aware of that haha. Definately if deciding between JTAG for 40$ and Unbrickable mod for 45$, the 5$ will save you whole lot of time, money, and headaches.

FYI...mobile tech videos will also do the unbrickable mod for you... either option is available from them. AdamOutler will also do it for you last i heard 30 bucks after shipping.
are you friggin kidding me?? its not just regular soldering... or a regular soldering iron. And JTag is a method of using open pads on the mainboard, used by almost all cell companies to program the phones and allows direct input/output control. And until AdamOutler's research into the processor was the only way to de-brick. oh.. and on some phones JTag requires soldering..
WIKIPEDIA Jtag.

[Q] Wife's Vivid decided to die today.

Wife and I got a pair of Vivids in June of 2012, mine is rooted, has CM10 on it, her's is 100% bone stock.
Since this morning, it will not boot. When you go to turn it on, the screen's backlight comes on for 2-3 seconds, then off for a second, and a quick blink of the backlight and nothing. Then it starts a quick (.25-.50 second long) vibrate every 19 seconds. I've tried the battery from mine, same deal.
I'm not eligible for upgrade until June 2014, so if anyone has an ideas on what could be wrong or how to fix it, I'd greatly appreciate it.
If anything, I'd like to be able to get the data off it... pics and videos... for some reason she had no SD card in here and dropbox filled up back in April. Wish she'd told me that happened.
Thanks!
Apparently Vivid charging ports are fragile. Possible that hers has a short? Broken piece lodged in there causing the power to be wonky? I'd take a look with a good magnifying glass. Replacement part on eBay for about $6 if it is broken.

I'll see what I can find out. The kids have a couple of those toy microscope things, just need to get a battery so the light will work.
I plugged it into the computer without the battery and Windows wanted to install some driver qhsusb_dload? but googling that makes me think the phone is bricked in some way, which is odd because I never messed with hers.

Is there a way to definitively determine this? I'd hate to pay someone for this, just to find out it wasn't the problem.
Also, will this retain the data on the phone? I'm really aggravated at myself for not realizing there wasn't a MicroSD card in there, and more aggravated at my wife for not noticing the "Hey dropbox is full" notifications on the phone since APRIL. She's aggravated because all the pics and the video of the kids since April could potentially be gone. Good times for all.
Thanks!
You can try the Unbricking project...

You need Linux... And there is no guarantee...
Iirc you only need a live CD... And don't need it installed...

The very same thing happened to mine mid summer. Here is the story from my experience. Sent to HTC for repair. They would NOT give an estimate up front. They wanted $210 to repair it. Told them no. Sent it for JTAG service. RIFF box could not talk to it. Replaced the phone.
I would send it for JTAG service. Especially if it is still showing some signs of life. Look on EBAY for jtag servive by nto1566. $25 if he can fix it. Money refunded if he can't. All you are out is postage.

Sorry if it was stock rom and suddenly dead, it is hardware issue, not bricked by corrupted boot loader or software issue.

Boot on recovery?
Hello friend!
I want to ask if you tried to charge the phone until green LED in upper left corner?, Then if you tried to put it into boot mode by pressing volume down and then press on? if you can load into boot mode, which is a white screen, you can scroll with the volume key down to "Factory Reset" and pressing the button on. Maybe the phone is restarted but surely erase all data are stored.
If you decide to JATG, the same will happen
Decisions, I hope you serve what I recommend, if so please let me know in the post, OK
If you plug it in to charge it either does nothing, or the orange "charging" light will come on for a few seconds and go out.

S3 Mini VE Hard bricked (DEAD)

So i have a S3 mini VE, and i was flashing a stock firmware on my phone suddenly the USB cable disconnected during the process (ODIN) now when i try to turn on the phone, it doesn't come on at all. the only way to get the phone on is to charge it (AC). but it goes into loop every 5 seconds. So when i take the battery outta the phone and then plug the charger in. It shows this message (See below) but won't go into loop. It's seriously weird. The button combo are fully dead.
So basically i can't get into the phone i tried every method, even tried USB JIG from eBay. i seriously don't know what's going on with the phone, i need help fixing this issue.
has this happened to anyone else?
Button combo (DEAD)
Flashing with ODIN (DEAD)
Download Mode (DEAD)
Recovery Mode (DEAD)
Connecting to PC (DEAD)
So i've done all this, so please don't tell me to do these again i've done em
Thanks!
Same problem
Man! How I understand you!
Recently I came up with a similar problem only with my Huawai Ascend mate 7. Even though I am able to connect the device in FASTBOOT mode and flash the recovery It just won't boot into it because there probably some mess up have happened to the device's partitions So in particular it is Hard bricked.
Reading a bit here about a hard bricking I think our best bet is to send the device to an Authorized service center. And what they can do is basically two things, first is use some so called "Hardware tool" to force the ROM re-flash. This is an ideal solution for us and ( as the Warranty is not applicable to our phones anymore) in this case we will pay less money, but we still have to . The other solution might be to replace the "Chip" or entire "Motherboard" and which might cost an arm and a leg. I am not sure it worth it then, maybe buying a new phone better and just sell this one for spares.
Anyway I am waiting for solution for me for some more time and then I will contact some authorized Huawei Service here in my City.
Haha better of just selling our device, i know for a fact i won't be able to fix it coz i tried everything i could, even USB JIG. Also tge repair service i seen will cost me around $30 which my phone is worth around that price. So im just gonna sell it off or i might just wait for couple of days to find a solution...
