Phone shuts down when shaken - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My SGS i9000 has a horrible problem, when I shake it, it turns off. Now it could either be loose battery or a loose battery contact. I would like to fix this myself (Loose batt contact) since I have mild knowledge in electronics, and have the necessary tools I believe.
I have had my SGS for less than 2 months so im still at warranty, but I would like to evade sending it to samsung since it takes a month or so to get it back, and I would have to reflash stock rom. I have an expensive plan and this seems as it could be easily fixed. Any guides, tips you could hand out? Should I just not mess with it ever for any reason? Is the i9000 too complex compared to say a DS?
Please any tips would be greatly appreciated, from materials to actual guides.

Make sure the battery sits securely in the case without jiggling and clean the contacts with a mild acetone.
Beyond that I would suggest taking it to a service center or tying a new battery.

As impossible as this sounds, I think the problem comes from my otter box cover. I just spent a whole day, without it, shaking it around and all, never turned off. Then immediately after putting it back it shut down! Is this even possible? Im so confused...

try putting something between the center of the battery and the back cover to put a little bit of pressure on the battery when the cover is on.
The otter cover may be causing the back cover to bow a little, allowing the battery to move.

Hmm, yes... Good thinking. I will stuff a piece of paper and close it up, hopefully this fixes that. If not, then samsung it is.

[Q] Loose Battery???

Hi everyone,
I had seen a thread somewhere that someone mentioned that their battery was loose inside the phone and that the could hear it rattle around but I cannot seem to find that thread now.
I too have this issue. When I shake the phone for example I can hear the battery rattle around inside and when I take off the cover I can move the battery a bit from side to side. Can anyone tell me why this is?
I KNOW this is NOT a fake battery as I watched the store clerk open my box and build my phone from BRAND NEW and I have done the comparison on the batteries as well. It just seems that the hole for my battery is a bit too big orthe battery is a bit too small.
Can anyone tell me what I can or should do about this issue?
yes, i recall that topic as well
so you are not hallucinating
no idea where it went
if you do have this issue with the phone + battery, i'll suggest you take it back to bell for an exchange
they should be able to tell quite clearly this is not normal when they compare to the other phones they have
I stuck a business card, cut in half, between the battery and the cover. Seems to have filled the space in just enough to make a tight fit, my battery is no longer loose.
For now I have wedged a piece of paper between the battery and the hole and it has stopped the battery from moving as well but this should not have to be done I am sure.
@allgamer - I would take it back but I purchased it from Future Shop and the location I bought it has not received any new shipments in since and that was a month ago. The concensus from the Bell Stores here is the same as well stating that they are all on backorder.
I will keep my ears and eyes open on this and when they do have some new stock I will be bringing it to their attention for sure.
Yiann, even i have this problem with my bell i9000. I just found out and was looking if anyone else had this issue. I will take it in when i get a chance and will let you know. Did u get a chance to get it replaced or how did u fix this issue?
Thx

+1 i too have the same issue. piece of folded paper does the trick, but like all the above posts this shouldn't be necessary...

I have this issue too.. the battery is way too loose. It must be a common manufacture error.
Same problem
i also have a loose battery in my gti9000.....even after wedging a piece of folded paper in between the battery and the surrounding loose area and making it fit quite tightly, the phone still makes a rattling noise when it vibrates....though when i hold the phone in my hand, it doesn't make that rattling sound...wondering if it cud be something other than the battery...

[Q] Battery replacement question

OK - I've watched several You Tube videos showing how to do this on the XT890, but still have a question (or two) - All the videos show the cable attaching the screen to the main case and the cable attaching the battery just popping off - I'm not sure I've seen a connector like this before - how easy is it really to simply undo? And then the battery removal -some show some heat gun action to remove, is this really required? Finally, how easy is it to do in reverse, but with a new battery?
Oh, one last bonus question - if I was going to do this I'd try to get a OEM part, not sure I trust anything else, is this a good idea?
Many thanks all

They are quiet easy to pop off. I did it just a few days ago. The only hassle is all those screws and that you need to gently apply some force on some parts to get it off.
I never went as far as replacing the battery itself, so no idea of why to use a heat gun. In one of those youtube video's it just flipped it lose with some small plastic thingy.
OEM parts are most of the time good quality. But others could be even better for less money. Just look around and hope more people have used the batterys and find some reviews.

Many thanks - I assume that after you "Popped" off the connector you pop it back. Is your Razr still totally bricked or were you trying some major surgery to get it alive again?

Yep, after you pop it off, u can pop it on again (easy). Just be careful and don't just pull off your screen without disconnecting the connector.
Still bricked. And will use this weekend again to try to get it back to live. But small chance...
Be careful, the backplate of the screen is fragile. Don't pressure it, you might break the amoled panel.
When I have time I can post some photos of the teardown and my destroyed screen... Battery is glued, heat gun is not a mandatory but preferred, because you could twist the battery a little.

Many thanks - I have all the tools, a "new" battery (someone on eBay was selling it as he'd bought it thinking the phone had battery issues - hopefully he was telling the truth). I just need the courage to do it.

Just take the time for it. Empty desk, places/bowls to separate all screws (there are more than 3 different screws) and indeed some courage. Scratches are common with this kind of things. Just be careful, especially with the screen. I personally don't mind scratches on the outside, but i dislike them on the screen.

Question About Loose Back Covers

Hello all!
I've been very pleased with my new Nexus so far, but yesterday I noticed the back cover was loose and and had a bit of a gap near the volume buttons. Some quick googling informed me this was a known issue, and is easily RMA'd. I have also discovered there are some very nice skins from Slickwraps and from Toast which can be used in place of the back cover. I find these to be very beautiful, and will most likely use one. Knowing this, is there any useful reason to send my phone in to be replaced? Has anyone discovered a flawed battery causing the cover to lift? If so, was it obvious before removing the cover?
I would be afraid that if I didn't get the phone replaced, it would leak if you ever got around water. I think I would send it back because if you ever decide to sell it you won't get much for a phone that doesn't have a tight fitting backup cover.

Those are both good points, but they are somewhat nullified by my plans. I'm going to be removing the back cover to use an aftermarket back. I will, of course, be fully responsible for protecting it from water, and for the damage if I don't. I tend to treat any device, water resistant or not, as if it were the Wicked Witch of the West and will melt upon contact with a drop of water. I also don't sell my old phones. They are way to useful to keep around for projects and such. I still have a couple of Blackberry Storms acting as desk clocks and a Galaxy Nexus doing tattle-tail duty for my home alarm system.
Basically what I'm looking for is any indication as to an actual malfunction being the cause of the back coming unstuck. As it stands, the loose back is a head start on getting it off for an aftermarket.
I say go for it as long as the new back cover fits tight. I am a snob about having a perfect phone.

Most the skins cover the back cover so need an intact backcover or have the same problem. Will see when remove back cover if it is battery related but then most likely can't RMA as you opened the device. It a catch 22 situation.

I'm looking at the wooden covers. They're a bit thicker then the vinyl skins, and can sit flush with the frame when used without the back. They're rigid enough to do the job, though not advertised as backs, folk are reporting having success.
I am tempted to open it up and have a peek at the battery, but doing so would definitely void the warranty. That's why I was looking for any examples where a battery actually has gone bad. Though, it looks like the battery is pretty simple to replace anyway...

Usually swells up in the middle and starts raising the back at the mid points.

Does it feel swollen? Can you tell by eye? The only ones I've witnessed having a dying battery had removable battery covers, like the Storm and the old Razr flip phones. My cover is only loose on one edge, and feels very firmly stuck the rest of the way around. The phone itself is functioning beautifully, not at all like the few I've seen the the grow-a-battery of death. They usually sputtered and gave up until I replaced the battery.

If it's the battery will do the same. Will start acting up and then die. There is a thread somewhere in General I think with pics of expanding battery. Some just the backs come unglued. It is definitely a RMA situation anyway.

Xperia Z1 dies at 70% battery and overheats like crazy

Guys, I need help. I'm not sure of this problem is specifically due to software or hardware but it's very annoying since I have to be by the charger all day. The phone goes from 100 to 70% within like 45 minutes and then dies and when I try to turn it on, the red notification light flashes 3 times.
And the phone overheats so much it's not even funny, sometimes even while in standby with absolutely nothing happening. Help please.
Try to recalibrate your battery with a play store app it can help
1) try to flash stock sw with complete wipe of data
2) if that won't help then you'll have to go to some service center - a friend of mine had a similar problem with Xperia Z and some serviceman told him that the phone was a bit damaged with water, so they cleaned it up (don't ask me how though ..)

I had the exact same problem, except my phone died around 85%.
Replace the battery. The battery in there is made pretty cheap (also made in China); cheap batteries usually have a ton of flaws. I suggest you replace it yourself to lower the costs. Make sure you buy the right equipment too (battery, sticker adhesive glue, spudger tools, hexagonal screw driver (T5 or T6), heatgun/hair dry, guitar pick, suction cup, back cover is optional; I already had a heatgun so the whole thing costed me around $30). Look on YouTube, there's a guide of how to replace it.

Agreed.
My phone died at 50%, not much as you but it happened when i use it for 1 year only.
The only way to fix this problem is replace a battery.

Battery replacement

Well it's almost time to replace the battery, I've noticed lately the battery life isn't what it used to be....no point blaming software when the phone is almost 2 years old and for AU$25 for the part....it will give it a new life.
Anyone replaced theirs yet? Did you do it yourself?
Well, no replies...I did it myself.
Easy as...20mins tops.
Let us know did you notice any improvement over the previous battery.

please let me know what video/instructions you used and how the phone went back together. most importantly how the better performance is now.
There's plenty on YouTube. The trick is a playing card and get the glass bloody hot to touch. Once you have the card in and they glass off its simple.
The back glass just pressed on and it's back to normal. I won't know battery performance until a few charge cycles. So far it's doing ok.
You're very good: a tech in a lab shattered my glass and let air come in under the front frame. Now I have a destroyed (but working...) Note 5 with a perfect battery: it lasts so long with Nougat.
I don't know how he glued the back again but it's all shattered: I have no tools but cards and hair dryier... Will them be enough to remove the back again and replace it by myself? (I'm no good at this but if the glass is already destroyed...)
