[Q] Auto AirPlane Mode? - Captivate Themes and Apps

Basically I go to school and some rooms I can't get a signal in it.
So I was wondering if there was an app that puts the phone into airplane mode based upon not finding a signal for "X" amount of minutes.
I know of auto airplane mode, but that does it on a timing schedule instead.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hmm I will try and report back tomorrow, thanks!

Didn't do what I needed... Any other ideas?

Hi,
I have developed a simple small application doing exactly what is needed. Other applications on the market are quite complex to do such a small job.
The application puts the device in airplane mode at the specified time. It also gets the device back into normal mode at the specified time. This happens every day. One can also cancel the auto on/off scheduling. The application is small and is free without any complexity.
You can get it from the Android Market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.naresh.utility.auto.onoff&feature=search_result
Do tell me if you face any issues. Would be good to get a good rating as well if you are satisfied.

Trying to Stop Cell Standby

So I was looking at the settings.db with the sql3 lite editor and came across this: Line 59 mobile_data value 1. However, I'm constantly in airplane mode and only turn on wifi and bluetooth as needed.
Is it possible that this line is the controlling factor to keep the Streak from turning on the mobile radio? Would setting this to value=0 stop cell standby?
I'm a little afraid to tamper with it since I don't know what it means - does anyone more knowledgeable than I know what this line controls?
A app called juice defender offers that option

Not actually - I installed juice defender but mobile_data still has a value of 1. And cell standby still is showing at 88%!!!
I also had this huge battery drain to cell standby (on the wifi only model...)
trying to flash the Honeystreak, and see if this changes (and to try out HC too hehe!)

Okay, that makes sense. I was using that for awhile on the stock, and noticed no difference. Uninstalled it a week later.
Will try to test it out on streakdroid once I get back onto a working rom (fell into the BSOD of Honeystreak B3)

That doesn't stop the phone modem. If you check the settings you will see that the device is still picking up signal from the cell towers. It just isn't connecting with the mobile network.

I don't think that is doing anything more than the existing settings. The S7 already allows one to turn on WiFi during airplane mode. Earlier android versions did not allow this.

I finally was able to disable "cell standby" by the following procedure (for reference see the following in the Acer Iconia 500 forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...t=cell+standby )
Using "Bloat Freezer" freeze phone.apk (the instant this is done, it will force close - just hold the power button until it shuts off ) - this will only happen once. Then using "Bloat Freezer" freeze telephony.providers.apk - this doesn't force close. Reboot once more and viola! no more cell standby. I also noticed in the notification area at the top a new icon - it's 4 bars with an x over the lowest bar. It's like when you turn a cellphone on airplane mode - same type of icon.
Also, I had airplane mode enabled (I always have that) and now the little airplane no longer shows up - I guess it's been replaced by the "bars with x" icon. WiFi still works as well as it did before.
To me, this indicates that mobile data is off but maybe someone more knowledgable can give a better explanation.

What do you mean you switch off? Do you lock it or turn it off. Because if you turn off your phone the alarm will not work.

Another "iPhone doesn't have it, so it's not needed" feature, I guess.. :/ too bad, really. It's not extremely difficult to implement a function like that. Or implement something like a standby mode that can be woken up by some system command. Such as an alarm, a preset sync event to a calendar update, an event on a calendar.. Could make the device sleep again after checking as well. Say you'd wake it up every once in a while to check for missed calls (if.. service providers would have ever implemented something like that - you could maybe even let your phone be woken up by a call.. if a system start would take five-ten seconds, connecting through would work), or receive unfetched messages or e-mail from the network, that sort of thing.

Firstly, this is a QUESTION and should be in the Q&A forum. But anyhoo...
I'm not sure if the OP and a couple of the other posters are trolling or just being deliberately obtuse. Do you REALLY expect your alarm to work when you turn your phone OFF? I know, back in the day some of the simple phones would support this, but it was implemented in hardware. Your phone now requires Android to run - not going to happen when it's turned off.
I want my phone on all the time so people can contact me if they need to. At night it goes into Quiet Hours, so only a phone call or alarm will disturb me. It also only uses about 7% battery overnight, so I can't see the problem with that at all.
As for the comments about the phone waking itself up periodically tipi check on things, that means that it can't actually be fully turned off, and also that will use battery in the first place.
I'm still not sure if I'm being trolled or not... :banghead:
lol. Yeah, back in the day most phones had a function like that. ..pretty much all laptops actually have the same thing, but no one actually use it for anything. Wake from lan-poll, wake from activity on system-bus, wake on software counter. Practically all chipsets have that from ARM boards to the latest desktop motherboards. Different depths of sleep states makes it pretty easy to do implement any amount of functions from that.
The "hardware" poll isn't a whole bunch more complicated than preserving the clock when turning the power off. All phones do that.. keep the clock from stopping after you hit the power.. and literally all phones have a soft switch to turn the phone from that "standby" state to power on state. And that switch can be triggered by a routine on some cmos clock+ module. It's not complicated. For all we know it could be there on the chipset already, it just didn't seem very appealing to anyone to program an app in Android to communicate somehow with the hardware layer outside the Android interfaces.
..I don't know. I have this feeling that in 20 years, when people are asked to program something and the Microsoft tools break - then people can't do it. "Original Code" becomes a religious object that people worship and call the divine wisdom of God, and things like that.. And no, you're not being trolled.

nexus 7 not killing wifi during sleep after updating to 4.2.1

I have selected to never keep WiFi on during sleep yet now the tablet continues to run the WiFi as you can see in the pictures. This has forced me to use airplane mode when I am on the go because otherwise the tablet just keeps WiFi on and burns the battery extremely quick. This has been a problem since I updated to 4.2.1. I am not rooted completely stock. A solution would be great because this sucks right now. I have tried clearing the cache in recovery but that didn't solve the problem.
I'm running the latest Paranoidandroid ROM and thought that was the problem. I can't yet post to that developer forum so I was just waiting for the next beta.
I guess it's a problem with 4.2.1 then.

If you don't find a solution you may want to try DataEasyPro from the market. It kills both 3g and wifi as soon as the screen is off and then runs a user defined schedule to turn on 3g or wifi every now and the for a few seconds to keep you upto date with your social world. Works great. There is even a widget so you can turn off the schedule when you are downloading or updating from the play store.

I think it is a 4.2.1 problem. Its hard to say how wide spread it is though because I have only seen a handful of posts about this issue though. To me, this issue is unacceptable. I should not have to enable/disable airplane mode to conserve battery. Especially when the previous version of android prior to the 4.2.1 update handled WiFi sleep settings without a problem. Hopefully a fix will be here soon. My tablet used to have superb battery life without me constantly monitoring it. Now I feel like I have to keep double checking that I remember to use airplane mode so that I don't go to use the tablet and find a nearly depleted battery.

In had the same issue. I found Google maps to be the culprit.
It defaulted back to location reporting.
Check Google now sync, maps and currents.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
It's not google maps itself, it's the android location service. It's always collecting data even if your phone or tabscreen isn't on. This is pretty anoying since google only let you choose between agreeing to run the service in the background or not using it at all. Stupid! How about collecting data only when the device is in use?
Same here. There is a bug report on Google about it.

I highly recommend using an app called Better Battery Stats. You can find the free version here on XDA. It'll tell you if there is an app causing a wakelock. I used it to troubleshoot my Rezound and I'm getting a solid 4-5 hours of screen on time with the extended battery on that because it helped me lock down the apps that were killing my battery.

I was having the wifi on issue as well. Just bought my N7, stock 4.2.1 and not rooted. I followed the tip in point four of this post, which details a simple set up using Tasker, where the unit turns the wifi on and off after the screen turns on or off respectively. The reason for the 10 second delay as is detailed in the link, is to allow for the turning on of your N7 to check the time or other reasons, and then quickly turn it off without the wifi on task being activated.
the screenshot below shows my wifi being stuck on while in sleep mode, even with it set to be never on during sleep in the settings, and the change in behavior once the 2 Tasker profiles we set up.
Cheers
Those of you having issues, have you tried the "only when plugged in" setting? Not sure if it would really matter but that's what I use and mine turns on and off just fine.

Testing that now. Turned off Tasker, and set wifi to the "only when plugged in" setting. It's only been about 30 minutes, but so far it looks like it's behaving the same as before, as in keeping wifi on while in sleep. I'll Let it sleep for a few hours and see what the chart shows.
Cheers
EDIT: So I let my N7 sit for about an hour after switching the above mentioned settings, and you can see in the screenshot below that the wifi is staying on while the unit is not awake. I've set my Tasker profiles to control the wifi once again.
I know it may be fixed by a factory reset, but frankly I'm more than happy with the way Tasker handles the issue.
Cheers
so 6 months later, I am still getting this problem. However it seems only to be with the last update. The tasker method seems to be working well though.

Couple of gripes

1: Sleep Mode
First thing I noticed was that sleep mode might work well, but there needs to be a setting to lock the screen while sleeping! I woke up and called 2 people, rearranged my home page, and deleted a few icons! Not sure how I was able to do this in my sleep, but more need to lock the screen! I solved this issue by turning off gesture wakeup.
2: Indoor workouts
How do they not have the ability to track indoor workouts such as spinning or general fitness? I was hoping by getting the Neo that devs could write their own fitness apps that fix Samsung's issues. Turns out Samsung isn't opening the SDK to developers for this! My solution has been to only track heart rate using the running app, but my calories don't get tracked.
3: Took it out for a 20 mile bike ride, the screen would constantly show me going 89mi/h... I mean I might have been going 19mph but 89?!? It wasn't just once, it was the entire time. The summary page showed accurate results but not live...

how were you able to get the speed to show on the watch ?
You can turn the screen off by going into the Display settings. Annoying? Yes, but that's the only way. Maybe Samsung will release updates and/or devs will come up with a better one.

Also went on a bike ride and my speed fluctuated up to 60 mph... I did track the distance in addition to having runkeeper on at the same time on the phone and the distance readings are correct. Just have to get this speed thing figured out. When I completed the work out, it did show my max speed as 23 mph, so that part of the tracking seemed to work out fine.

You have to be updated to the latest rom.
The latest software version should be ND8. If it is not, then you can manually update the rom by loading Kies3 from Samsung and connect the Neo. (there is a thread somewhere in this Neo Forum that explains!)
Kies will detect the software update and push it through to the watch. My update stalled the first time, and I had to repeat. But after that I had the sleep app in my apps drawer.

1. For sleep mode there is an option in the sleep menu to enable blocking mode. Sleep function works independant so you can disconnect the BT connection.
2. I think this is an opportunity for exercise machien OEMs, think TechnoGYM, use NFC to sync such data, as opposed to their keys.
3. I suspect the fitness measurements (aside from HR) are not accurate.
Sleep mode works but they really should allow you to see the time when in sleep mode , you need to exit sleep mode to see if its time to get up

Correct. I use it most evenings.
They should add an option of a nag screen to remind you to turn off/on certain activity modes. IE- Still walking? if not, turn off pedometer. If it notices you're moving and pedometer is not on, ask you if you want to turn it on. Same goes for sleep sensor apps.

Also I have one gripe, I'm a flashoholic for phone roms. I have a Note 2. I find it very annoying that I have to wipe the Neo everytime I connect it to the phone with a new rom. Why can't it just keep the data on it? Messages etc not a problem, but sleep data, pedometer data and even clock and wallpaper all have to reset too.

just download kies3, put the watch to pc via USB, install the driver and you'll get notification that the firmware is avaiable.
I totaly agree for sleep mode and turning off the display.
And we need ALARM witch is stand alone in the watch it self. I mean it's a smart watch and no alarm... WTF

Why do you need alarm???
You have to set alarm in your phone, gear 2 will indicate for you.
BTW I have a fav. free watch app, you can set alarm in this app on your gear 2.
This free watch app is LED Alarm, you can download it from your Samsung Apps...

My phone vibrates for no 'reason'

Greetings all,
I have a new Note5 and overall I like it.
As you might expect I have been working feverishly to find up to date app solutions for my usage model and that will work on an unrooted device. I despise all that conspire to force this upon us! Anyway I have been testing loads of apps and somewhere along the way something has been set to vibrate to indicate something. It is happening at fairly random intervals and nothing shows on screen or in the pull down that accounts for it.
I have looked for events that are pending, past due, etc. I don't get many texts. So, it isn't that. I have even turned on airplane mode which should prevent any kind of updaes or pushes that might trigger an notice.I have checked all of the apps I am using and none are set to vibrate only. From the initial turn on of this phone I have run package disabler pro for Samsung. Using a basic list from this xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563. I have restarted the phone several times as well
Can anyone suggest some kind of system monitor/logging app that I can load that will allow me to find out which application is triggering this? Is there some other way I can find out what is triggering this event? I expect that a logging app will eat battery more but on a temp basis that would be ok.
Thanks all and here's to someone finding a way for us to root our notes without messing up our warranty and secure payment...

If you are talking about how it vibrates when you first pick it up for seemingly no reason, then that's a feature. It's to let you know you have notifications. It's called smart alert, you can disable it in the gestures menu.
vibrate (and sound) for 'no reason'
Thanks _MetalHead_
But no. This happens when it is sitting undisturbed. I will check and turn off that feature if it isnt already so it isnt adding to the confusion.
If I didnt say, I find no idication of active alarms or notifications.

Do you have any Bluetooth devices connected? I had a smart watch with my S5. Every time it connected or disconnected, the phone would vibrate. This was especially annoying when I left the watch in the bedroom while sitting in the living room with my phone. Every few minutes it would connect/disconnect and the phone would vibrate.

Not clear if this is contributing. Will turn BT off to be certain.
Actually, I think I can say for certain no. This has happened in airplane mode.
That is why I am looking for a system logging application or some equivalent method.

Hi, Go to settings and go to S Pen Option, and turn off all S Pen alerts, including power saver one.

Yeah, I re-read your OP, and noticed you said it was happening in airplane mode.
The S-Pen suggestion above seems worth pursuing.
Good luck!
I have the same problem. It would just randomly vibrate. I think is something to do with Google notifications.
