[Q] alarm clock while phone is off

Hi,
I've been going through the internet with this question and have always found the same answer: "it is not possibale to turn off the phone and have the alarm clock work". now most people say its because the phone is a smartphone confused: not so smart if you ask me) but i have a nokia x6 which is a smartphone and this option is included in this phone.
So i guess my question is : what the heck? how hard can it be? can anyone make an app that does this? i would gladly pay for this feature as will other users i guess...why didn't samsung think of this?
and by the way my friend which has an iphone says this option is available on the iphone so i don't really buy the "not optional on smartphones".
anyway would be glad if someone had an app that does this....

Same search happening here. I dont think it's possible though.

You mean off as in off dead not switched on and asleep i take it .
That would require an app to power the phone on and set off alarm i guess .

this is one of the better features of nokia, i don't remember what phone first introduced this, but is a shame that an android phone doesn't have this. try to put the phone into aerial mode, switch off wifi,and keep it on.that made the trick to save more the battery and have the alarm ringing at the proper time.
also the iphone,has got issues with alarms...

I had the same question! but now I understand that smartphone does not need this features anymore.
Try to make your phone idle in "Plan mode" for 10h the battery only drain 1%. So why did you need to turn it off during the night?
I suppose that your nokia x6 also eats battery (evens very little) while turning off to maintains this features.
As you cannot expect the battery life of a smartphone beat a regular phone.
At this point we can consider that the "Plan mode" of your smartphone equivalent to "turning off mode" of nokia x6 ^^

Yeah I used to have a nokia 5800 running symbian and it would wake from off and activate alarms. Doesn't appear possible with android but I guess the question is why would you want to? It's bad practice to turn smart phones off all the time. As has been said the smart thing to do is to activate flight mode while you sleep. This is about you changing your behaviour - not your phones

It's bad practice to turn smart phones off all the time.
Rubbish you don't leave A TV on day and night nor a car running without use .
If you do not need your phone for twelve hours turn it off .

I bought new I9003 & have been looking for the same feature as my 6yr old moto L7 had this feature I somehow assumed that this should be a standard feature.
I think it should be easily possible to write an app which schedules the power on /off scheme, its very handy when you are in areas where charging the phone will not be possible, moreover I don't need the incoming phone at night.

Would be possible on a HTC desire or HTC desire z as they don't properly turn off but the galaxy s does a full shut down.
If it was built into a kernal battery drain would be a mass problem.
Airplane mode would be just as good.

A smartphone is more a computer than a phone. If it's off, you want it to be off, not just to shut everything down unless X
Nokia probably builds it's hardware to support this. since the internal clock of any computer runs at any time they probably built a trigger into it to boot up the phone to ring. On setting the alarm you program it probably into the hardware.
I think that's pretty bad design.
Anyway to answer less confused:
Android wants to have any part interchangeable and it would be kind of dangerous to let every app that poses as an alarm access the hardware on such a level they did not build it in. And since it's not in android the manufacturers (as samsung) did not give a damn about it either.

I think its more to do with the android operating system which has to be loaded before the alarm turns on then samsung.
Annoying but highly useful during exams when your not too sure if your phone might ring or the alarm might go off.
But yh google should have solved this problem, Its been possible on the most basic of phones 6-7 years ago. My last 2 samsung phones that were basic (e900 and d600) both had this function.

As most of us know our beloved Note (1) doesn't have the "notifications LED" present in so many dumber and older phones.
After completely breaking the power button from just checking if there's any notification I've got a new phone and I'm on a quest for finding some alternative notification.
So, it seems that in order to actually GET that there's some notification you need to have talkback enabled and that's buggy (you get this spooky voice when doing certain tasks). FINE, I disabled (freeze) both samsung and google TTS (although I didn't really wanted, but OK). Then I get a hand icon in the notification area with "talkback activated". Ok, FINE. I'm using Flashlight Notifier (which flashes the camera LED) and it seems to be somehow working, except that it leaves the (camera) LED turned on continuously!!!
I seems that there's some other option to flash the soft buttons backlight but it needs some very old (I think GB) ROM and I'm not going there. For what is worth I'm on a stock new JB with speedmod kernel.
In short, any solution that "just works", getting extremely frustrated with all the stupid problems I run into? I need notification for gmail, hangouts, sms, missed calls, nothing fancy.

Whats wrong with vibrate and message/ring tone?
This is question. So should be in Q and A thread

a. vibrate/ring disturbs people around (especially when there are at least 10-20+ notifications coming every day)
b. you might step out briefly and you might not take the phone (all the time...) with you to WC and such. Yes, some applications allow for repeat rings (like the default SMS app) but that only makes (a.) worse
I think it is good to be able to just look at the phone and see that you don't want to turn the screen on as opposed to turning the screen on, see you don't need anything from there, turn it off.

There's a whole cohort of software that does that but is usually geared towards making the "real" notification LED blink in various colours and also it usually shares the talkback (samsung) bug (but I'm willing to work around it).

NoLED seems to be fine (I was thinking for a long time that on OLED it might be a good idea to have some "few pixel" notifications, although I understand there is still significant power consumption even with OLED and few pixels on).
The device still deep sleeps (at least without notification) but of course this is the type of thing liable to kill the battery overnight.
Still, it works great and for most notifications I need it doesn't even need talkback (that's a big plus because I don't have to freeze TTS). And it looks great! Will report later or tomorrow how things go, with my luck I'll run into some issues in no time.

The battery drain was extra 2-3% while me and the phone were sleep from 10pm to 6am. Acceptable. Good. With setting - noled always on and battery % while charging on.

NoLED is great for now, battery life is good, it catching all I want (maybe except hangouts) without enabling accessibility and is better than I dreamt.
Maybe, maybe a little concerned with display life now (it looks like there is still some kind of backlight, not only the small icons) but overall it looks good!
Maybe some option to blink the camera LED would still be good but you can't have everything.

[Q] 4.4 Alarm when phone is OFF

Hi all,
I just upgraded to KitKat and was really disappointed to notice the alarm won't work any more when the phone is OFF.
That was a great feature, something I've always missed since I moved from Nokia to Android smartphones...
Is there a way to restore this functionality?

Did you try Airplane mode....?

I wonder why, WHY, in every thread about the alarm there is someone coming out with "Why don't you use airplane mode?"
Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be rude, but airplane mode and OFF are not the same thing.
The phone is still doing stuff, app are still running in background, power is used.
"But in airplane mode the battery usage is almost null..." yep, almost...
People get mad about the TV's LED staying on but then it's ok for the phone...
I think (as many other people do) that the alarm working when the phone is off is a great feature.
People have been complaining for years about the lack of this on Android. Some dug deep into hardware spreadsheets to prove it was possible while Google and the producers kept blaming each other.
Finally HTC made it, and now, no one knows why, with Android 4.4 they've removed the feature.
I don't want other "solutions", I'm asking if there is a way to restore the Alarm-when-the-phone-is-off functionality on 4.4.

Ok first off for the alarm to ring the phone is not fully off. IT is nothing more then being in airplane mode with the screen blacked out. As HTC removed it and Sense is closed sourced (this is fast boot related) there is no option to return it.

You would have to search deep as this is old knowledge from when it was first done on dumb phones back around the motor razor. It is not a new feature in the least. I am sure you can search around and dig up the info. You can test it yourself by running a logcat while you charge with power off.

Battery Saving with Deep Sleep Battery Saver

So, I know the whole discussion around task-killers and Android - let's try and avoid that here.
I rediscovered this app last week, I had an old version but it updated from Playstore. I stopped using task killers a long time ago, but I'd forgotten that the approach Deep Sleep Battery Saver takes is slightly different: it makes sure that the phone is REALLY asleep when the screen is off.
Now people have said that it's wake locks clash with Android own.
I went ahead and tried it on the highest setting - slumber - and it's fantastic in both my P7 & P6, and also on my Lg2.
The only thing I have to remember is that when I'm downloading files that take longer than say, 2mins, I have to change my screen-on time to accommodate, otherwise it will stop the download as soon the screen goes off.
I found this is a small thing to remember given the battery savings.
I mean the difference is sooo large I can't tell you.
I put it down to this - we all have a variety of apps on our phones and we really don't know what keeps running in the background.
The Huawei Music app for example, is notorious, as is the Camera ago on the Lg2.
Deep Sleep Battery Saver shuts everything down, period. And it works. I'm absolutely stunned by how much later into the night I can use my phones with a single charge in the morning.
It's a little like GREENIFY but as I don't root my phones anymore, this was a great alternative.
Actually even better is that I don't have to go through my entire list of apps picking and choosing.
I just select SLUMBERER.
The results have been so fantastic on my P6 & P7, that I had to share.
The Lg2 is great with battery WHATEVER you through at it.
The P6 & P7 are gorgeous phones - with anemic batteries...it's always been the case.
With this app, I have discovered a while new sense of respect and use for my P6&P7.
Of course, once your actually using the phone, the drain is as fast as always, it's just that the savings you make in between are phenomenal.
Just saying.

P.S. Oh! Just remember to turn off 'enable logging' in settings-general, leave the 'show persistent notifications' ticked in notifications& language, and turn off ALL the 'battery notifications' in notification& language.
Those are the things responsible for wake-locks.

To save battery it works quite well indeed and I thank you for that. The only tiny issue is that I don't receive the calls anymore, only a text that says that somebody tried to reach me. No ring, no move, just missing calls. I could also turn off my phone to save battery...

I receive ALL my phone calls, ALL my texts, as they are, when they come in, as usual, asap, otherwise what's the point.
My email, Facebook, whatsapp etc comes in soon as I turn on my screen.
The App doesn't touch your ability to make OR receive calls EVER. Something else is going on with you.

This app is extremely useless once you install an anti-theft program.
When you install this program, programs like Cerberus, Kaspersky Internet Security anti-theft function or Lookout won't work as they should when you lose your phone (and the screen is off).

Yes.
If you're using an always on, anti-theft application, you're not really worried about conserving battery.
This app works if you need to get more life out of your charge.
Alot more.

No it doesn't actually! The alarm clock over rides everything short of actually switching your phone off... And in some ANDROIDS even this isn't enough.
You'll be awoken, don't worry.
You'll also be amazed at the amount of battery life you suddenly have... I'm loving it! Just don't forget the p.s. end of post #1

My phone vibrates for no 'reason'

Greetings all,
I have a new Note5 and overall I like it.
As you might expect I have been working feverishly to find up to date app solutions for my usage model and that will work on an unrooted device. I despise all that conspire to force this upon us! Anyway I have been testing loads of apps and somewhere along the way something has been set to vibrate to indicate something. It is happening at fairly random intervals and nothing shows on screen or in the pull down that accounts for it.
I have looked for events that are pending, past due, etc. I don't get many texts. So, it isn't that. I have even turned on airplane mode which should prevent any kind of updaes or pushes that might trigger an notice.I have checked all of the apps I am using and none are set to vibrate only. From the initial turn on of this phone I have run package disabler pro for Samsung. Using a basic list from this xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563. I have restarted the phone several times as well
Can anyone suggest some kind of system monitor/logging app that I can load that will allow me to find out which application is triggering this? Is there some other way I can find out what is triggering this event? I expect that a logging app will eat battery more but on a temp basis that would be ok.
Thanks all and here's to someone finding a way for us to root our notes without messing up our warranty and secure payment...

If you are talking about how it vibrates when you first pick it up for seemingly no reason, then that's a feature. It's to let you know you have notifications. It's called smart alert, you can disable it in the gestures menu.

But no. This happens when it is sitting undisturbed. I will check and turn off that feature if it isnt already so it isnt adding to the confusion.
If I didnt say, I find no idication of active alarms or notifications.

Do you have any Bluetooth devices connected? I had a smart watch with my S5. Every time it connected or disconnected, the phone would vibrate. This was especially annoying when I left the watch in the bedroom while sitting in the living room with my phone. Every few minutes it would connect/disconnect and the phone would vibrate.

Hi, Go to settings and go to S Pen Option, and turn off all S Pen alerts, including power saver one.

Yeah, I re-read your OP, and noticed you said it was happening in airplane mode.
The S-Pen suggestion above seems worth pursuing.

I have the same problem. It would just randomly vibrate. I think is something to do with Google notifications.
