I am an Evo 4G owner and love it .. I'm now in the market for a tablet. Is it better to get a honeycomb tablet or go with the Galaxy Tab and root it? I ask because I would really like to stay with Sprint but the Xoom is coming wi-fi only next week on Sprint. Looking for a little guidance here. Also, can I make video calls with the Galaxy Tab? Thanks Android fam!
Tricky question really....
The Galaxy Tab is a 7" device whereas the various Honeycomb Tablets that are appearing are all 10.1" devices. Is size a factor for you ?
The Galaxy Tab can be used as a phone (in the US you will need to root and modify it). I have been using my Tab as my only phone for 5 months now and can't imagine going back to using a 'regular' sized phone because the screens all look tiny to me now
A friend that works at Samsung told me that the new 10.1" and 8.9" Galaxy Tabs that are coming out soon will both be capable of making calls (again probably disabled in the US models).
I've played with an Acer Iconia 500 - 10.1" tablet running Honeycomb and it was a great experience, however its too big to carry everywhere and it doesn't have phone capability so it doesn't fit my needs.
So the question is how are you going to use it ? If you want something to sit at home then go for the new larger sized tablets, if you want something mobile to have with you all the time then the original 7" Galaxy Tab is the best option (especially if you get rid of your phone and use the tab instead).
Sean
Honestly, go for latest firmware. Many machine are already available with Honeycomb 3.0 so it would be wise to get the latest. Also, most of the machines running 3.0 come with dual core processor. That's my opinion.
Thanks for the info guys. My Evo is great and I am looking for a tablet to use more as a replacement for my laptop while on the move ... although using the galaxy tab for a phone does sound pretty good .. size wise, it sounds a little strange to use a tablet for a phone but I haven't went that way so I don't know ... I want to use it at home and on the go .. carrying a laptop everywhere has its advantages and disadvantages but the new tablets are going to be wifi only and that kind of defeats the purpose for me ... can the galaxy tab be rooted and used on 4G and are there roms that have honeycomb? Thanks for helping me out!
any other opinion or options?
If size dosen't matter for you then take a honeycomb tablet (iconia a500, asus transformer, galaxy tab 10.1...). Personnaly I like my galaxy tab 7, because of all the reasons listed by seanchk above.

I use my SGT 7" as a phone + tablet too, for the same reasons as above. Fair warning, the phone function works in speakerphone as a default unless you use the wired headset included in the package or buy a bluetooth headset which I do use.
~ A little thanks goes a looong way! ~
A 10" tablet to me is almost equivalent to the portability of a notebook for me. I have an ipad 2 (which my wife uses mostly now), and carrying it around was a hassle.
The tab is the perfect size because you can put it in your back pocket or your average jacket pocket. It's also nice to be able to hold it with one hand for an extended period without getting sore. The ipad 2 is a great device for using in bed but if I'm out and about, the galaxy tab is a lot more practical.

grukko, thanks for the input. I have been told that if I have an evo, I shouldn't bother with an android tablet. how do you feel on that comment? also, mobility is huge for me as this will be mainly used for on the go to replace having to carry a laptop everywhere. i am just wondering if the 10 inchers coming out on wifi only are going to be worth not having a 3G/4G connection.
also, I will be keeping my evo as I need a phone with unlimited minutes for business. i live in the US. just want to be happy and comfortable with my purchase.
I'm attempting to replace my HTC HD2 that is running 2.3 and netbook. That is, I'm going to try using a tablet only. I'm a web surfer/emailer/texter and that's about it. How hard could this be? Here's what I want:
Android 2.3 (Honeycomb is fine, too.)
7" Screen (that doesn't totally suck)
3g
GPS
Bluetooth
I don't need speed. I just want to be able to use it like a normal phone, but with a bluetooth headset.
What's out there? I'll even consider made in China junk...if someone can convince me that it's not total junk. I'm sure others like myself (giant sized hands) would want this rather odd size for a daily use phone, no?
Right now, the closest thing that looks acceptable is the Viewsonic ViewPad 7". Mixed reviews, but I'm assuming at some point Gingerbread and overclocking will help it out.
please, please...dont consider china junk...
i totally agreed with viewpad 7" choice

A non-USA Galaxy Tab?

7" phone? Wtf, you must be a giant for real...
Samsung Galaxy tab (P1000). I think it's by far the best 7" choice.
One other thing: if you want to use it as a phone, you can exclude Honeycomb tablets, since Honeycomb does not support phone functionality.
Thanks for the info!
Why non-US Galaxy Tab? I've got friends in England and Australia who visit here often, and could bring one over for me.
Its the one with the phone enabled modem.

Ouch! $600 USD for the UK version new. Yes the dollar become the peso?
I believe the 7" Asus MEMO tablet is supposed to be capable of voice calls, plus it should have better specs that the Galaxy Tab (720p screen and a dual-core CPU if memory serves).

The Dell Streak 7" does all that...
+1 on the Dell Streak, very good device indeed.
Isn't 7" a bit excessive for a phone?
I chose the Desire S over the Desire HD because 4.3" was too big, I couldn't imagine trying to take a call on a 7" screened handset =P

Exactly...
He said that he will use it with a headset so I don't see how the size is a big factor. I have the sensation with a 4.3 inch screen and while it is much better than the g1 I came from, I still wouldn't mind a bigger screen.
Hey guys, get whatever 3g tab you want, and install skype, use with a BT headset. all your problems solved.
samsung galaxy tab love it as my all in one
7" is fine for me, for a phone. I have big pockets. Non issue.
Soooooo...
I use google voice. I could use the standard phone and text, I suppose. To go to Skype would be a pain.
Does the Dell 7 really work as a phone?
Researching...researching.
I'm wondering if the Honeystreak rom here has a phone app. Couldn't find an answer.
I'm getting the 7.7 for sure when it is out!
I was debating whether to get an iPad2 whilst on holiday in Florida as prices are cheaper than UK.
But then the 7.7 came out!

Hi, I have an Archos 70 Internet Tablet, and I'm going to upgrade to the new Samsung Galaxy TAB 7.7, as soon as it's on the stores.
May be if available in Europe !

I'll be getting it as soon as it comes to Canada. I've been waiting for this tablet for quite some time.
if they sell it in US and the price is under $400, then I will get one. I have both Galaxy tab 7 and 10.1.
To be honest, I love my tab 7 more since it so easy to hold and most of the apps/games are compatiable with Gingerbread.
10.1 is nice and fast.. but it is a little bit too thin and too large. hahah.. I am probably the only one to complain the "thin".
Anyways, the 8.9 is still too large to hold by one hand (I have a small hand) as well as my 5 years son.
Tab 7 is almost perfect for me except the CPU is a little bit slow, there are some lagging..opening apps/games..
So, 7.7 is dual-core (small size) is perfect for me. Hope Samsung keeps the price low.. Anyways, I am selling the 10.1 Anyone?

I'm thinking about jumping over to the xoom or acer a500, i am really cheesed off with the lack of support from samsung.
I bought my P1000, 3 days ago.. So now I am still ultra-happy..
I saw that 7.7'' but when will it come out..I could not wait..
I LOVE that amoled screen (after some time using P1000 than switch to My Galaxy S phone to do something.. only then I see that BIG diference between screens)
Anyway what is most important to me and if someone can answer me, as far as I can see this new tablet 7,7' will NOT have that she.t of nVidia Tegra..
So can I presume that new tablet it will support all video codec's as Tab P1000?
If it will I am definitely selling this (new one ) and geting 7.7..
Definitely gonna upgrade, but I dont think its gonna come out soon
and before that, I would love to taste the Ice Cream Sandwich 1st on the original tab
if the taste is good enough, i might prolong my tab life before upgrading since ICS is newer than honeycomb and prolly have better features too
I would never get an iPAD unless the incorporate some sort of cell phone capability, be it a remote device that belt clips with a display or actually on the ipad.
I love the SGT 7" that I have, it is perfect, for cell calls, and surfing the web. Think carefully, do you REALLY want to help the Apple machine make more money?
Does anyone know when it is coming out?
Actually when the last Galaxy tab 7 was released, could we buy it unlocked somewhere?
I ask because I need the new 7.7 to work with Bell. I already have a Bell 3g SIM card ready to go.
Thanks
If I could I would.
Once I have the money for the tab 7.7 ill definetley buy it.

Let's see, it's 7.7 so that's too big for a small tablet, won't fit in a pocket any more...
It runs Honeycomb rather than a phone version of android, I don't like honeycomb on larger tablets and surly its even worse on smaller screens... I have also yet to see an ambled screen that beats a common LCD (Galaxy Tab 7, iPhone 4, iPad all look much better than the Galaxy S 2 screen and it's supposed to be one of the best).
That means it can't replace my Galaxy Tab and it can't replace my iPad as it's smaller and would be missing some apps (mail and calendar for starters, android just can't compete with on that front IMO)...
So no, I won't be downgrading any of my current tablets
i like my galaxy tab 7 but im not sure if im going to invest in any more Samsung devices after they kinda wrote off this device as a red headed step child.
Ive put some thought into it and either the 7.7 or 8.9 would be nice i love the fact the 7 fits in my pocket. 7.7 has what i want and that's honey comb tables I'm a medical student and some of the apps like Google body are very useful.
So ya i think I'm gonna hop ship to 7.7 just hope there's a lot of good development on it get rid of that tw ux garbage
correction if http://sammyhub.com/2011/09/05/galaxy-tab-7-7-and-galaxy-note-pricing-for-scandinavian-countries/ is correct then no i will not be upgrading that's some insane pricing.
After using my tab as my phone for 12 months I've recently got myself a SGS2. I love the s2 and I really must disagree in regards to screen and picture quality. The S2 is far superior to my eyes. I miss my tab though, and have found it is used as a wifi device around my home as my primary portal to interwebs and the world! Its perfect and with the car kit set up in my kitchen (suction cup works well on my benchtop) it is extremely convenient and I love how connected I feel even when cooking breakfast! Its fantastic. The S2 is about to be violated and I'm hoping this'll breath new life into it but I can absolutely see myself going back to a tablet of around 7 or 8" and don't ever carry my 7" tab in my pocket so would lean towards the larger device... I would like to see a device that is a phone that goes inside a tablet that docks either @ your entertainment hub or in your car or both. The phone would be the primary CPU and such with each step providing supplementary hardware enhancing the GPU and CPU and memory extra. Or a more solid mirroring across devices.. its frustrating not being able to just put one device down and being able to continue seamlessly on another device.. its kinda exciting when you think how easy some of this would be with current tech.
I have more ideas.... but I've said too much already.. patents pending Nobleskill Inc.

I'll get the Galaxy Tab Plus, not the 7.7 one.
7.7'' is too large for my pockets and if a tab is not pocketable then it's useless to me. The Galaxy Tab Plus will have Android 3.2 and the same 7'' screen as the current tab. I'll stick to this form-factor forever (or just not upgrade my tab :-D).
Here's more info on the Tab Plus: http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/20/galaxy-tab-spotted-7-inch-honeycomb-tablet-t-mobile/
Dont think I will
I have been using the 7" for about six months and it satisfies everything I need. I can do my work on the go, remote some PC's that need fixing, surf, youtube and even gaming!!!
I don't think I will upgrade just for the sake of having a faster device as I haven't noticed any slowdown on this device.
The screen on this device I think is brighter than the s2 screen and clearer, maybe amoled is only for people with blue eyes!!!
Im a heavy power user on my galaxy s 2 phone. I do sprinkler installations and 3D landscape Designs. I use the gps, google earth, Mobile Road Warrior for invoicing, (Awesome App), Take a pic of the job site, use PicArt to sketch the dimensions, pull up my clients designs from my website, and show them videos on our installations and 3D Designs, and get them to pay online with it. Its just to small and sharing the phone and using it as a work stations is not working out. I can get one from sprint but dont want the contract, Im going to best buy to get one.
I need a 7 inch not 10. Would anyone steer me in another direction. I have read about all the tablets on xda but havent found many comparisons as far as really multi tasking one against another. Where else could I get the answer but xda.
Thanks
Crude, how do I get this in the plus forum???
I have the SGT 7 (non-plus). I traded a used Xbox 360 and Compaq 515 notebook for a new tab
I had the opportunity to trade for a SGT 10.1 if I had traveled for about 2 hours involving the same trade, but I didn't take it lol. I probably would of though (not that the 7 is bad or anything, but 10.1 has better specs).
samsung galaxy 10.1
I upgraded from an Acer Iconia 500, thinking the heavy and bulky tablet wouldnt hinder me, i was wrong! My next was to sell my soul to apple but im a high on android kinda guy. Any rate found a samsung galaxy 10.1 about a month ago and havent taken my hands off of it yet! The specs are strong and hard to compare to other tablets, multi tasking is easy, moves smooth from app to screen, fast processor,etc....you wont be disappointed but i wouldnt do the 7 inch, pay the extra for the real estate
I am selling my T-mobile Galaxy Tab (the original) to a coworker.
The original plan was to buy a Nexus 7, but after reading about it I learned that it:
1. Doesn't have a rear camera
2. Doesn't have TV-out
3. Doesn't hardware decode DivX/mkv
So now I am torn between the Galaxy Tab 2 7" and the Nexus 7.
My problems with the Galaxy Tab 2 7" are:
1. It doesn't have as nice a resolution/screen
2. Proprietary connector
The TV out is what really bugs me....but I am not sure if Tab to Tab 2 is a big enough jump
Anyone have any advice?

The most useful I've found is STILL the original Tab7 once CM10 put on it (well Humberos's rom to make it TabletUI).
Ok, the newer games aren't available, but for day to day actual using it, the apps/flexibility/sd-card storage/camera, it's been hard to beat.
Perhaps the Nexus7 for tablet/gaming, and a reasonable phone that'll let you bluetooth tether? One with a decent camera in?
If tv out and a rear camera are crucial to you, then get the Tab.
But performance wise the N7 is leaps ahead, the Tegra processor is gritty like a Corvette

The New Nexus 7 or Nexus 10
I too was torn between getting the nexus 7 or galaxy tab 2 I ended up going with the nexus and have no regrets.this thing is awesome. Screen is amazing, the ability to use it as a phone,I text and call my using my nexus all the time.plus with usb otg, storage is not an issue. My g2x has the ability to hdmi out to the tv so watching content via android device to tv is not an issue for me. And it's freaking fast!!

The Nexus 7 might lack a couple of things but do remember that it comes at a great price and it's hardware is pretty awesome! I'd take a Nexus 7 anyday! Direct updates from Google and runs any game and app you want it to? Phew! Yes please xD

I was facing a similar dilemma when deciding on a 7" replacement for my trusty SGT7. To cut the long story short, my eventual decision was the iPad mini. Before you guys commence the flaming, allow me to list down my considerations.
1) Rear Camera
I work in an environment that prohibits camera phones. As such, my primary device (phone) is not equipped with any cameras and it is therefore important for me that my secondary device (tablet) comes with a decent camera, since it would be my only camera on the go. Of the current crop of 7 inchers, the Nexus 7, Nooks and Kindles all fail to hit this mark. The Galaxy Tab 2 has a reasonably decent rear camera so that stayed in contention. As for the iPad mini, its rear camera is probably the best of the lot and that factored heavily in my consideration.
2) Official Software Updates
Frankly, I'm still rather miffed with Samsung's poor software updates for the SGT7. Cutting official major software updates for a one year old device does not inspire much confidence in their subsequent products. Apple, on the other hand, continue to offer major software updates for their products in the 2nd and even 3rd year of their lifecycle (case in point: the iPad 2 and iPhone 3GS). The Nexus 7 would have been my go to device on the Android platform, since I'm confident that Google will continue to support the device for years to come, but alas, it doesn't meet my requirement for rear camera.
3) Proprietary Connectors
Both Samsung and Apple have their own proprietary connectors. However, only Samsung's connector is a constant source of frustration for me. I cannot fathom why the SGT7 does not charge with generic usb chargers, without a 3rd party adapter. I was on an overseas trip recently and it skipped my mind to bring along the adapter. As a result, I had no means to charge my SGT7 throughout the entire trip using the usb charger in the rented vehicle. The same usb charger could charge an iPad with no problems. Moreover, there are plenty of 3rd party products that support Apple's connector (e.g. radio docks, external power banks, etc) but I've not seen a single one that supports Samsung's.
Of course, the iPad mini's dated guts and last gen screen leaves it trailing the competition, but the smooth user experience and arsenal of tablet optimized apps still outweighs the negatives for me. Best of all, I could still hold on to the SGT7 for some Android love as long as it doesn't die on me.
Similar position here. Decided to go with the N7. I can live without the rear camera, and I will also get much better hardware overall compared with the Tab2. Seriously, I used the Tab in store and it lags so much. Neuxs 7 just flies.

I ended up buying a 32GB Nexus 7. MX Player Pro is a decent substitute for all of the native playback options that the Galaxy Tab comes with.... but it is REALLY nice not having to lug around and keep track of my one data cable.
Also, i pushed 4.2 on there via adb sideload yesterday.
yup, yup.
i agree, the SGT7 its a all in one device, movies, tv out, apps + gaming in HD, calling, texting, social networking, skyping for free + video chatting, google internet, and the icing on the cake for me is once i got rid of tmobiles security page my device runs like a regulare phone, so all i pay is $30 a month (us) for unlimited 4g internet, unlimited texting, and 100mnts talk. So i just opened a skype account and pay $18 every 3 months for unlimited talk. So the galaxy tab 7 running cm10 is super fast for me on tmobiles 4g network. Its a no brainer.. lol.. hope this helps... my regards to all, especially all the great DEVS out there keeping our P1000 still ahead of the game ..!!!!!

I would certainly go ahead and pick Nexus 7 because of the hardware and the price its the next gen with a low price tag. Yes I admit. The back camera might be an essential to some but not to all. And the galaxy tab 2 camera is not that "outstanding" either. You could save up and buy a dslr or something.

If I had to choose, I would pick the N7 (that's what I already did). But my sons P100 has CM10 which makes it more directly comparable to the N7 and outside of 3D gaming, there isn't much of a difference speed wise.
Considering the N7 came out a while ago... I would assume they would be releasing another 7" tablet within a few months. The 7" tablet has been their most successful and they have the upper hand on Apple for a while. If Google can keep the lead and stay ahead of the ipad Mini, it'll constantly be a good success.
That said, if you can make due with the GTab a few more months, you'll likely see a new Google 7" tab with the faster S4 snapdragon and a higher resolution screen.
