[Q] Back to Original ROM - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello People,
I've installed the latest verion of Cyanogenmod on my sgs. But there are a lot of bugs in it so, i'm wondering if it's possible to return to the original Froyo Rom and how.
Kies doesn't detect my phone...

But, will i lose everything then or what?
Btw.. the biggest thing im stuck with is the "force close loop" with com.android.phone. Do you know how to solve this?

you can do a backup with titanium backup.. and that way you wont lose your apps...

Yeah as other said,
Just do a backup with titanium and then just flash a stock rom with Odin or use ezbase. And you're good to go

[Q] updating through odin or kies

Ok I just got my sgs and I was wondering if I can backup my current build to restore later if any problems should come up and be able to send it to repair (warranty)
Also I want to update to 2.2.1, do I have to update through kies before I flash to darkys or another rom? Or just flash my rom with odin (I'm on 2.1)

Look up Titanium Backup or Clockwork Recovery.

You shouldn't need to. Check the install instructions for Darky's ROM (or whichever you're looking at) to be sure.
Can I roll back on the same configuration if needed? You know if I mess something up really bad and need to take the phone to get serviced?
Merry Christmas

Ok I'm not clear on this ... I install
Clockwork put darks rom on the sdcard flash it etc... My question is if I'm on jm4 can I just do that? Or do I have to first update through kies? Will it update my phone to 2.2 and jpy automatically is what I'm saying ...

Custom Recovery Question

Will a custom recovery prevent Kies from updating my Captivate when Gingerbread gets released? I know alot of folks will say who cares since there are all these great ROM's being created but if I wanted to try the new official released version would Kies work?
Has anyone upgraded to Froyo using Kies with a custom recovery?

Flash to stock before u do that.
Flashing to stock saves lots of headache esp when moving between ROMS. Moving between android versions, well, goes the same without saying.
Thanks Diablo009 for the advice. I am from Canada and I am running stock Rogers Froyo on my i896 Captivate. I am reading lots and taking small steps before flashing a custom ROM. What I plan to do is add a custom recovery, run APN Backup, do a TI Backup then Master Clear my phone and do a ROM backup using Clockworkmod. After that I want to flash Firefly on my phone restore my APN and TI backups. What I need to know is if in a few months Gingerbread becomes available and I restore my original ROM using Clockworkmod will Kies recognize my Captivate even though I keep a Custom Recovery?
Have you, or anyone for that matter, updated your ROM using Kies after adding a custom recovery to your Captivate?

Nope. I am out of the service provider loop for everything. I get all I want from these forums, and don't even bother to connect to kies for anything. And long before the service provider can even think of GB, we'd be have many ROMs based on it.
If u plan to use kies for any updates, I would recommend to revert to stock and update.

[Q] Questions about 2.2 stock

I recently just flashed a new rom and I had realized I never tried the stock 2.2 from samsung and I was wondering what people thought of it and if they were still able to flash other roms or use odin to go back to stock 2.1 and then flash other roms again. Or does updating to 2.2 mess up some of that?
And is it even worth it to try and check it out?
I am running serendipity and my wife has stock. I would not go back to stock if att were to pay me. Her Gps was messed up, bad battery life and other strange issues.

the only thing 2.2 may mess up for flashing roms is it installs 3e recovery which needs signed update.zip packages (can be patched ) , and sometimes you need a new root program.
besides that its... stock. with the 2.2 updates...
Has anyone tried reflashing odin or using clockwork/rooting in 2.2?
I'm thinking i'm going to stay away from it at this point but curiosity my get the best of me....

i sucessfully rooted it using superone click method...but had problem flashing clockwork mode as there is sign verification problem...so i tried to flash back to 2.1 and used AIO method...which bricked my phone...so better to keep flashing good custom roms and be unbricked ....stay away from stock froyo...its exactly 2.1 with stock froyo capabilities...

[Q] i9000 voodoo installation

hello all
I am using the I9000 international version
official rom 2.3.3 I9000ZSJV6
I tried installing the new voodoo and turns out there is the signature problem, realizing is the recovery 3e which is causing it.
so now I wonder if I can still install it through Odin? Just select the PDA and starts it?
Will I lost any data in my phone? I already have pictures contacts and stuffs backup, but just don't want to lose those installed applications.
Thank you very much for answering, helping and even just reading it!
Appreciate it, Thank you.
p.s. got another question in flashing roms, so do i also lost all data by flashing a new rom?

I haven't i9000 but i'm sure you have to flash a custom recovery like CWM first...
Yes. 3e Recovery is the problem. If you want to get 2e Recovery which will solve this issue forever, you will need to flash CF-Root.
Either that or you downgrade your SGS to Eclair 2.1 (Step by Step) and flash it back to what you want to gain 2e Recovery.
And yes. You can flash a kernel via Odin with PDA. If you flash KERNEL ONLY, your data will not be wiped out. However, if you are to flash a new ROM, all your Data will be wiped out.
Thanks all
I plugged the phone and tried to flash the voodoo pda file and my phone is stuck at the GALAXY S screen for 30 mins.... omg what can I do now?
omfg........
I think i have found out the reason...
i have mistakenly flashed the Froyo kernel to my phone
can I flash another kernel n hope it turns ok??

I am trying to flash it with SpeedMod Gingerbread hopefully it can over-writes it but it is now stopped at the "zImage" stage in Odin geeee

Reflash to stock kernel and start from clean might do the trick.

[Q] Upgrading from 2.2.1 to Onecosmics RC3.1

Hello,
I have Galaxy S 2.2.1 rooted (CF-root) with woring CWM, a Nandroid backup, and Onecosmics ICS goodys locked and loaded on my internal SD card. But still I can't find the b...courage to do a full wipe and flash ICS as if something goes wrong I will be without a descent smartphone for about 2-3 months.
My question is if I can flash straight from 2.2.1 or I should go through CM7 first.
One flash is simpler than 2 in my head..
I reckon that as the days go by I will do it and I want to make sure I do it the right way.
Thank you in advance.
Hi,
I, personally, went through a CM7 flash before going to OneCosmic's ICS, leaving Froyo. It took me about 10 minutes to do it, and in doing it this way, you stay close to OneCosmic's installation instructions.
1. Flash CM7
2. Reboot and test your phone (without installing apps & widgets)
3. Flash OneCosmic's ICS
Hope it might help!

I would recommend flashing JVU (using Odin) before cm7 as it contains the latest bootloaders, just to make sure everything works as it should
Sent from my sgs
thanks!!!!
Yeah,
First I think you should install JVS with CF-Root and recovery.
Just register to samfirmware, where you can easily download the required files, also you'll find some tutorial. For CF-root, just google it, and you'll also find some tutorials, than just put the zip in your internal sd, and install it from recovery. Don't forget to remove your microSD before flashing, cause it can be damaged after.
If you did something wrong, you can still go back to stock JVS ( happened to me ) and start it over.
Regards

Dont worry, you can always Odin back to 2.x
Download mode through 3-button-combo > Odin (re-partition checked!)
Thank you for your insights, I will probably go to CM7 and then to ICS and if i get any issues I ll go back to 2.2.1 and then start from JVU.
I will let you know, soon I hope..
Going via CM7 should be the safest way. CM ROMS are the easiest and quickest ROMS to flash imo and you shouldn't have any problem. Once you do that without any problems, flashing ICS should be as easy.
Gluck!
So I tried to get CM7 over 2.2.1 with no success so I took the long road and upgraded to stock 2.3.4 via Odin, then flashed rooted CF root kernet, then upgraded to CM7 and finally (and after a lot of sweating) I got to Onecosmic's ICS which is great and really a major upgrade!
I think I have some donating to do........
