Issue with wallpapers on gingerbread roms? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have noticed (and mentioned this in the Continuum rom developmental thread) but I noticed this in the Serendipity Rom (I am currently using now) as well so I thought I would make a new thread for it to draw some attention to it.
I made a custom wallpaper to use (with only one screen to use 480 x 800) and after making it and putting it onto my phone. I made it my wallpaper but it seems to zoom in on the centre of the wallpaper ( an image will be attached to this; it is not exact, but it shows what I am getting at) This never happened with froyo roms but it seems that the gingerbread roms are having this issue.
I tried everything i could think of to get it full size but doesnt seem to work

when you chose wallpaper it generally brings up the picture with a grayed out are around a orange (or whatever colour is the default for your theme) box. if you drag the very edge of the box some arrows will show up and you can expand it to fill the entire walpaper then just hit save and your done

Yes I know this. I've done this enough times to make sure I have covered the full wallpaper and I have. As I can see the whole wallpaper on my screen visible in my selection. But when I accept it it zooms into the red area.

maby try using a different launcher and see if that helps and if not and if it is widspread throughout the rom then its probobly a problem with the galary.apk on that rom

Tried different launchers still the same thing happens so it must be something thats going on in the roms.

Anybody else with ideas?

Go to the market and try "wallpaper set and save"

Do you have # of screens set to 1 in your launcher? Just a thought.

Looks like it did the trick! Thanks. Now I just need to centre the single screen wallpaper within a full size wallpaper (960 x 480).

Wallpaper problem when sliding keyboard open

Did a search and found nothing. Was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem.
When I slide my keyboard open and it goes in portrait, the wallpaper is tiled and no longer stretches out a large image like it used to. Is there anyway to fix this problem?
can someone help por favor?
try changing the theme then set it back to first one

yes i remember i had a problem with this as well... and i remember swapingt the theme fixed the problem.
but i have always thought, would it be possible to use animated backgrounds?
do you mean changing the theme in the today menu? Cause that's not doing it either. It has only been doing this after I did a hard resete and didn't let the phone load all of AT&Ts stuff.
PLease help. I switched my theme between all of them and none fixed the wallpaper going into tile when I slide for the keyboard. It's still tiled

No, my tilt used to zoom in on the picture. I have an image of captain america and then when I used to slide it open it used to zoom in on the top portion of his body.

I can't say that I've ever actually seen wallpaper tile on WM5 or 6. I've seen poorly made themes that when switched to landscape create a border on the left and right of the wallpaper. All of the standard themes included with WM6 seem to work fine in portrait and landscape for me. Maybe we could get an attachment of the particular wallpaper causing the problem?

Yeah, i'm starting to believe that the problem is an app that ATT installed. Cause this time when I hard reset, I didn't let the bloatcrap stuff from ATT install. And I only have the problem now. Either that, or it's the new ROM that ATT put out that is doing it, which I doubt.
But you're right, the Themed backgrounds don't have problems in portrait, only my pictures I set as backgrounds do. But note that I didn't have this problem before.
Are there any CAB fixes for this? Does anyone even know what the problem is?
Try this:
Your Today wallpaper is stwater_240_320.jpg (portrait) and stwater_320_240.jpg (landscape). They are found in the windows directory. Use an image editor to edit the images how you want them to look, and then replace them. I have to copy them to my device, then overwrite them on the device as copying them from ActiveSync doesn't seem to work.
You may need to define your today wallpaper manually before those files will show up.
can you elaborate on this more? I think there's a more simple fix to it from a CAB that is installed from ATT somewhere in the windows folder. Because like I said, this problem didn't occur before until I hard resete and didn't let any of the crap from ATT load.
My other speculation is that it may be the HTC home plug in.
i have the same problem
i have 2 formats of the picture i want to use
one in landscape and the other in portrait
but if i set one as the wallpaper how do i set the other format for when i open the keyboard up
well I have found a solution, but it's tedious without the ATT stuff that used to do it automatically.
First you slide your keyboard open, and then you set it as a wallpaper. Then it will ask you to select what part you want to be displayed in portrait. You can not open the picture and then slide the keyboard, it won't work.
1. SLide keyboard
2. select picture and then set as background.

stationary background?

is there a way to have your home wallpaper at just 480x320 resolution where it just stays in the same place & doesn't scroll behind the icons? without using a home replacement app.

I am not sure what the previous post meant? You need to compile your own launcher with eclipse. When you download the source from git, there is a launcher.java file which allows you to change the number of homescreens. I am trying to figure out how to do the actual compiling. If you find out let me know.
I think I have this figured out. When I am able to make a 3 screen launcher, I will also do a 1 screen, and post it for you.
what he wants or wants to know, is if it can be set up to make his icons more from screen to screen, but have his wallpaper not move (now it moves a little bit left or right when you slide to a different screen.) I have never seen such a thing myself to stop this from happening.
the "wallpaper set and save" app worked perfectly. thank you
Wallpaper Plus
well you can use wallpaper plus but its a paid app but it works and you can also crop the selected image for the single screen and that'' leave it as one image but will suck in landscape since its cropped and wont strecth but i suggest it, works very well

what I do is, I take a 320x480 image and use wallpaper set and save app, and the wallpaper doesn't move just my 5 screens do, but I don't know if thats a possibility on the stock rom, I;m using CyanogenMod 4.2.3.1
what someone should do is make it to where itll show a DIFFERENT wallpaper for every screen...

Wallpaper question

All,
Where should I put my images that I would like to use for wallpapers? Even with the stock images, I noticed that depending on what menu I used to set the wallpaper, some were resized strangely.
NC 1.1 Autonooter 3.0 Zeam Launcher.
Thanks!
where you put them shouldn't impact the image size. you can put wallpaper images anywhere really. i put them in /media/wallpaper on my sdcard.
I tried saving images from websites using the built in browser and then set them as wallpaper, but that didn't work.
I downloaded Opera Mini from the market and then I could properly save images and set them as wallpaper.
Maybe there is a setting for the native browser that allows for proper saving, but I could not find it. Anyway, Opera is a pretty decent bowser so I'm perfectly happy using it.

Thanks for the tip. But, I'm trying to use my own pictures - not web images.
1200x1024 is the proper size for two screens. 1800x1024 for 3. you could try resizing before setting as wallpaper to see if that works for ya. make sure you expand the box to take up the entire image when selecting it or it will mess up the sizing.

Thanks. Happen to know the right size for 1 screen? is it 600 x 1024? (seems to be if my math is correct)
But, what I'm more curious about is where to put the files. Seems there is a /media/wallpaper on my sd and my internal. Which should I use? I want it to show up in my "wallpaper".
Also, happen to know if it is safe to delete the stock pictures / wallpapers. Some of them are downright ugly.
Thanks!
don't know about deleting the stock images. you could try... i doubt it'd hurt anything, but just to be safe, make sure you nandroid first.
ya... i've never done a single screen, but that is the right math... 600 per screen.
either place will work. i've loaded them in both locations and they work in either.

I had the same problem, solution is to download coveroid. Any wallpaper you want will just go into the coveroid download folder, and then set the wallpaper from inside coveroid. For some reason the non-default launchers cause issues with setting wallpapers, but coveroid seems to fix this.
1200x1024 is the correct size for 5 pages. When you slide from one page to another the background doesn't move by full 600 pixels. It only moves by 150 pixels.
The built-in gallery function scales the pictures in an ugly way when cropping for use as wallpaper. It's a conflict between 3 screens of the B&N Nook and 5 screens of the typical Android launcher.
I followed the sticky with tips and downloaded the Wallpaper Set & Save app. It lets you navigate for pictures through directories and sets them as wallpaper while preserving the resolution if correct to begin with. I'm very pleased with it. My wallpaper now looks correct.
Thanks for the help!
I hope to have some cool wallpapers soon. It helps to have a Pro photographer in the family.

[Q] ADW Launcher EX Settings

Hey guys,
Just wanted to know if you guys would mind sharing your settings on ADW? I just got my Gtab a few days ago and I'm running Calkulin's G-Tab v1.1, love the rom. Thanks ahead of time

Both I would say...
Well I'm a fan of the minimal home screen. I only have one, and it has a few icons, a search bar, and the GV widget. So, I chose to go with only one icon on the dock bar and that is just for the app drawer. I switch back and forth between screen transition effects, but right now I'm using effect number 6: rolling slide. My app tray is semi-transparent and I have my desktop bounce set to 49. Fancy backgrounds are enabled and I've chosen a semi-transparent gray. Oh, and before I changed all of that stuff, I installed the ADW Honeycomb theme and I use theme icons.
Now that I think about it, there is a lot to customize with ADW. I have a few more changes but I can't think of them off the top o' my noggin.

I have a similar settings but I use 3 icon dock and I have it set to random screen effects. What do you have your Desktop Columns/Desktop Rows size set to?
Desktop layout is eight columns, seven rows. And I turned off the horrible indicators and the trash can. But in my drawer I have six by six in landscape and four by ten in portrait. What about you?

You're welcome. ADW EX is great and super versatile. Happy customizing!
I have my settings set based on performance. Not many animations going on and things like swipe speed are set very low. I'm on my phone right now but maybe I can upload my personal setting (not homescreen layout though --that wont do u much good) . I definitely have spent a lot of time customizing adw ex.
Hopefully ill remember to upload the settings XML tomorrow, I guess it can't hurt for u to try that way.

These settings are a bit outdated from what I'm running right now. But, my GTab just went haywire on me (forcecloses everywhere, can't run a thing -- good excuse to switch to the Vegan 7 experimental, though).
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need to change the extension to XML - I cannot upload XML files. It should read "adw_ex_settings.xml"
Just drop this in the root of your GTab and "Restore settings" in ADW. I'd suggest copying your current settings to another folder in case you don't like mine.
Thank a lot man, side question... Do any of you guys had a issue with no audio on Calkulin's G-Tab v1.1 using Clemsyn's latest kernel? I ask on the rom thread but haven't gotten a response.
I've had an audio problem with. VEGAN 5 but haven't tried another rom recently enough to tell if its the rom or my hardware.
my audio cuts out a couple of minutes into YouTube videos, or any other media for that matter. Do u get no sound at all or does yours cut out like mine?
I just flashed vegan 7 so ill be able to tell if its something to do with my model if my sound problem persists

It would work than just cut out and I have no way of getting it back besides re-flashing the ROM again, I have even tired different kernels and no luck.
Thats a lot worse than I have it. I'm able to just reboot and I can get my sound back, albeit only for a little while. Ill let you know how vegan 7 treats my speakers.

HOW TO apply a 1024x600 hd wallpaper

this will blow your mind on how crystal clear the wallpapers can be when we use native 1024x600 resolution. this is not some blown up 480x800 blurry wallpapers we always see to acheve wallpaper scrolling wich I always have off cus it lags my scrolling
1. download multipicture live wallpaper
2. download a highdef wallpaper here wowallpapers.com/show_wallpaper/world/england_wallpaper_01_1024x600.jpg
3. go to live wallpapers and select multipicture live wallpaper
4. go to common settings - picture source - single picture and select the high def pic
5. then select crop resize ratio and select Show Entire Picture
6. go back and under drawer settings select transition type and select None.
7.go back and under picture folder selection uncheck double tap to change picture
8.then go to picture change interval select Never
enjoy the most unreal wallpaper on your nook. if u have adw select landscape oreintation only . because potrait kills the wallpaper
Or just check the long-standing steps posted in the OP of a stickied thread in this very forum There is a quick & dirty solution there, but also my steps to get a pixel-perfect wallpaper.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889951
PS: 1024x600 is too small. You need a bigger image than that if you want to have it move in the background a keep an un-stretched image. We use the same size as the Galaxy, which is 1200x1024. That seems to give me the best results.
that method involves cropping the picture. my method SHOWS THE WHOLE 1024x600 picture (no croping)and its a tottaly diffrent way of the one that's posted on there. and I also mentioned I dont like having the wallpaper scroll at a cost of performance. if u wanna do it your way by all means I'm just sharing my way of doing things. cheers

Well you only need to crop the image if it's not the right size already, which is true of any method of setting a wallpaper, including yours. Not to mention that your method breaks in 50% of supported orientations Hardly "tottaly diffrent..."
And I have no idea what performance hit you are seeing from having a scrolling wallpaper. I've had no issues at all on Android 2.1 or 2.3, both at stock or with an OC'ed kernal. I mean, you're of course welcome to use whatever settings you want, I just dont know what performance hit you're talking about.
Either way, this just seems like a bunch of extra steps to accomplish the same thing that has been posted previously, just with less functionality. I dont mean to sound malicious; I just dont understand what advantage you're offering people.

Thank you so much
You are a genius cowballz69!!! Not only did this solve my problem and keep me from having to crop, resize, etc, etc, it also allowed me to have random wallpapers, different size wallpapers, etc. And they all scale excellently and look wonderful on my Nook Color! I was even able to mess around with the program settings and get an accpetable workaround for the wallpapers in portrait mode. (I have the mirror effect above and below the image, looks nice.) Thanks again!
Is this 1-1 pixel mapping when done either way?
I haven't even tried putting a wallpaper on other than the defaults yet, too busy exploring other NC features.
I tried every single method out there, this was the only one that really came out nice and crisp. Thanks man.
After reading up, i also tried ES File Explorer's Wallpaper function and got very good results, not as good as your method, but i would prefer to not run a live wallpaper if possible and got good results. I hope a surefire solution to this wallpaper situation shows up for the nook one day. I force the nook to landscape btw.

edit:
On the subject of the thread, I'm kind of surprised that this hasn't been fixed yet. Usually you guys jump on wallpapers and themes right after root.
I don't understand why the settings aren't built in that will allow us to just go choose a 1024x600 image, apply it in the correct orientation, and not let it move no matter how the screen is tilted. I don't want my wallpaper to scroll or change at all. That seems like it should be easy to do.
