I've tried countless combinations of trying to get the HC build on my Tab and each time I can't get this thing to boot...
If someone has been successful at getting it working on their Sprint tab could you please outline the steps taken, in detail if possible, to accomplish it?
Thank you in advance!

Bumping this thread. I'm interested too
Installed cwm using the how to that is sprint specific in the dev section of the forum. (use heimdall and make sure you install all the drivers right).
Then flashed the zip file in cwm by renaming it "update.zip" and selecting update from sd card.
At the moment flashing to hc is not worth it for a daily driver tab. It took me forever to figure out how to go back to froyo afterwards. I figured it out tonight. Someone has an Odin prepackaged with the stock everything. There is a thread in the dev section. But it's burried a little.
If it were me I'd wait for a more mature release (hat tip to spacemoose for being awesome).
I would post links to these things but I'm still on a low post count. Pm me.
Thanks, Thisrobot! I'll try that process as well.
I always seem to have issues having Heimdall recognizing my device, perhaps I'll start there.
I also want to check out HC, but all the instructions I find are for Heimdall, and I also have issues getting it to connect with my Tab. Posted a Q about making a tar file (odin works fine with my Tab) to get CWM working, but haven't heard back yet.
here is that thread that thisrobot mentiond for going back to stock....works very well. I had to use it the other day.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009926&page=4
I'm also starting to think that HC is just not ready for prime time, at least not on our hardware at the moment.
i've been able to get HC running on my tab twice now. But it's just not functional enough for me (no wpa2 wifi and quite laggy) for daily use. really hoping to see the CDMA CM7 up and running soon! So for now, guess it's stock rooted till something better and functional comes along..

I wouldn't say it's laggy. It is a very good rom, and the dev is addressing a lot of the things mentioned in the beta. The dev has also released an oc'ed kernel, (1.4 Ghz), so it is coming along nicely.
To use heimdell you need to be in download mode, power yountabbnoff and press power and volumedown simultaniously.
Is it so laggy? I would like to try, but if it becomes the tab useless, i will wait. What are the folks opinion on HC performance?

I've compiled a thread with useful information for Sprint owners. Check it out. It should help with your issue.

Hi everyone,
I have a Galaxy S that is rooted, but runs on stock Froyo.
In the last couple of weeks/months it has been slugging to a slow halt though... when I start it up, it can take tens of minutes to be ready to use. And when I use it, it sometimes shows black screens for minutes at a time.
Using this 'high-end' phone has become a very, very painful process for me.
So I started looking for answers. And I found them. A LOT of them.
So much, I am not sure where to start.
The last few days I have been casually reading and taking in data from this forum, but I have yet failed to form me a proper view of what to do... Kernels, ROMs, speed fixes, modems... help?
I am sorry if I am breaking any rules; I did search, and I did read. However, no thread I found has a proper and up-to-date guide regarding the best way to get my phone to be a powerhouse, not a snail.
(Could I keep my current apps installed?)
I would very much appreciate anyone who is willing to donate some time to get me going. I know some programming and am the families 'go-to-guy' when it comes to computers, so I should be ok once I get some pointers on what to look for.
Thank you for reading (and responding?),
MM
I dunno if this will help you anyway i'll post it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939752
I did read that; thanks for the suggestion though.
It doesn't really go into kernels/roms/modems etc. which my main confusion is about.
I just downloaded darky's ROM... Reading their site, but I am afraid of losing my apps, not going to 2.3, having it interfere with my lagfix etc. =/
If you are afraid of loosing apps you can use titanium backup. You can download it from the market. I can't tell you anymore because that thread explains very well what you have to do. But i can say that after some time it will be very easy and you will not be afraid to flash a kernel or a rom. I post this too but i think you have read this too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
I did read that... I missed the 2.2 / 2.3 part however.
I planned on using Darky's ROM but that link says its a Froyo ROM.
Which one is better, currently; Cyanogen (Gingerbread) or Darky's (Froyo)?
Edit: also, while that post lists a lot of options, it in no way goes into which is the best option for which people...
Increasing the confusion a little bit more, so to speak.
Try cyanogenmod and darkyy rom and decide which is the best. I can't recommend anything you have to decide. But i suggest to upgrade to gingerbread. Your phone will get smoother. (darky's 10.2 is based on jvq a 2.3.4 gingerbread firmware). Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061946 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091. Remember: with cyanogenmod you have to use different kernels

I'm a noob but I'll try to clear out few things for you.
From what I understand ROMs are like operating systems you use on PC.you currently have a froyo ROM running and flashing a gingerbread ROM will be like going from windows XP to windows 7.
when you download a ROM and unrar it you'll see 3 files.
PDA is the main one. PDA is Android and the apps that come with it. MODEM is the firmware of the wireless chipset of the device, it controls WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G/2G/GSM connections. The CSC holds connection data for the broadband networks as well as apps that are only available in certain languages/intended for a specific area or operator.
A kernel is like the heart of the operating system. It manages the system resources and acts as bridge between the software and hardware.
Now there are stock kernels and custom kernels. when you flash(install) a stock ROM all the necessary things are installed along with the stock kernel.
But if you wish you can flash custom kernels over stock kernels.
The speed/lag fix things you have read are basically conversion of file systems to enhance the I/O performance of your phone. You should know of the NTFS,FAT32 file systems in windows, similarly you android phone can have RFS,EXT4 file system. when you flash a stock rom RFS is default file system that gets installed. Many say that this RFS is to blame for the lag, slowness in our phone so what we do? we convert to EXT4. but to convert to EXT4 you need to be running a custom kernel.
So let me tell you this go on and flash a stock gingerbread rom, Im using the latest stock 2.3.4 XXJVR and you should try it. then you flash the voodoo kernel for XXJVR. it'll root your phone, convert the file system to EXT4.
reply if you have confusions.
cheers
Now you are on froyo. If you want to upgrade to gingerbread you should loose your application. Because if you backup your application using titanium backup or any other software from froyo. Its not advisable to restore in gingerbread. It will give always problem. So better way is download Drakys v10.2RE and do a fresh install.
http://samsung-sgs.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-flash-darkys-rom-v102-re.html
This happened to me once, when I was already on Froyo, lagfix activated, etc.
Took forever to boot, and was slow as hell.
Reason: faulty microsd card. The phone kept trying to read from it, and was unable to. I tried taking out the card and... voilá!
You could be still on Éclair and no lag fix activated, the phone would never behave like that. Try taking out the microsd card.
(Couldn't even read the card in the computer, so you see).
Hi guys, a small update:
I got Darky's 10.2, which is VERY smooth.
I reformatted my external microSD and put my stuff (music) back on it. Clean install on the internal SD.
It is a very enjoyable device once again. Two issues:
-It sometimes hangs on a black screen which I can't get out of with the home button. It seems only a battery in-and-out fixes this. (This issue worries me; is the internal SD corrupted?)
-The external microSD sometimes needs to be ejected and re-inserted to work.
Any solutions regarding that? Should I get a new microSD, or even contact Samsung to ask for a new phone (especially the first issue worries me... a lot).
Again, thanks a lot for the very extensive answers.
Especially marib; your post was very informative, and I'll be keeping a bookmark of it for future reference... thanks!
I think you could search for this issues in the darky's thread and if not found post the issue there to get a promt solution.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Yeah, figured as much.
Will be tackeling these issues in the weekend.
Just thought of posting them in this here thread too. Might have gotten lucky, and the thread was here anywho.
Again, thanks.
I can't seem to find the answer - I've purchased the VZW Tab Bootstrapper, which at this point only seems to brick my tab - after Heimdalling, I installed Oldmacnut's Rooted Gingerbread Rom - ROM Manager says that CWR 3.0 is installed - if I push flash new recovery, the only devices i can select from are Galaxy i900 - assuming that the rom was built from this device - so, what do i need to do to get clockwork properly installed? If i volume up/power up, I get stock recovery - if I use ROM Manager, it gives me the triangle with a progress bar for a second or two, then reboots - don't want to reboot with the bootstrapper program again, as i don't want to re-brick my tab - unless I'm crazy, there doesn't seem to be an easy solution - am I crazy and/or blind? There seems to be a possible kernal solution, but I have to flash it, and I can't flash it if i can't get clockwork recovery going - i think. help....
yeah, all the bootstrappers only work for Froyo.
I released a CWM + EXT4 kernel with V1 of my Gingerbread roms, only the kernel doesnt have 3G.
I also started on a new kernel for both, 3G being an issue when i ran head first into CM7 for the tabs.
I then decided to hold off on the kernels as i was building a kernel for CM7, I thought I could release a new one.
Now, last night I thought about making a thread with all forms of "recovery" from Froyo to GB for people who need to reflash a tab back to stock, and offer a bone stock version, and a rooted version. I just need to finish uploading the remaining roms to my server for hosting before i can post it all.
I thought of this as alot of people ask where they can find X rom or X kernel, which is why i started on that mirror.
No reason to flame, the issue of CWM for GB and the bootstrappers have never been addressed publicly
Is there a way to stay on rfs with your cwm kernal you posted?

Thanks - at least I know I'm not nuts - I honestly don't know that it's necessary to mess with the kernal that's in the GB rom you compiled - it works great as is - I'm just so used to flashing stuff through Clockwork from all the android phones I've had - new to the samsung/tab world, trying to get myself up to speed -
Thanks again for getting back to me, and please, PLEASE take care of yourself and family - this android world is supposed to be fun, not just for us that take advantage of the work that devs like yourself put in, but fun for the devs too - now put your feet up, pour yourself something cold, and watch some football.
Just make sure to have all the ROM's you started finished by morning...

Oops - copy that - thanks for the heads up.
Thread moved to Galaxy Tab Q&A.
Oldmacmnut,
I can't seem to get Heimdall working (or USB at all, for that matter) on my Tab. I have root, and I can reboot into recovery, although it isn't CWM recovery. I tend to believe that the problem is in a corrupt ROM install of some sort, and would like to either flash a stock ROM to get back to square 1 or a rooted ROM. Problem is, I think I need to figure out a way to do that through recovery as USB doesn't seem to work at all on any computer that I have tried. If you have a CWM Recovery that works, is it flashable in the stock recovery?
Thanks,
Seth
Seen an alpha 3 ICS rom. Can I just download that and flash it over my current rom or does it habecto be done certain way. I've flashed before on my evo but this seems a little bit more complicated
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
I'd rather go the full procedure they describe within their thread - imho especially you have needs for clockworkmod. Found that to be a quite safe way for me.
I would I just don't have access to a pc. Does ICS run fine on your tablet. Is it worth it
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
Once you have CWM Recovery installed, getting the ICS Alpha on your tab is not difficult if it's listed as supported in the thread.
Only thing: This is an ALPHA build. That means many things are not functional. The build is aimed at developers/testers.
Having given a shot at it, this build is surely not a daily driver for someone who needs its tab to be functional and reliable. Many of those problems have work arounds however but since the tablet is not mostly used by myself, I did not take the risk of having it be unreliable...
In short: it should work and not eat your hamster... But it is not a fully functional rom yet, be prepared for some trouble... Be sure you know how to go back in case of trouble... and read instructions carefully
If you want a good ICS rom here ya go. FYI!!! THIS IS FOR CDMA TABS!!!
Get rooted and CWM'd via Rodderick's thread in our Development section.
From there do the following (all credit to JT from here on out)
Download http://k.22aaf3.com/jt1134/vzwtab/cwm-recovery-5.0.2.7.tar
Extract the contents. You will have two files zImage and recovery.bin
Odin these two files to your tab while your tab is plugged in to the PC and in Download mode. This will bring your clockworkmod up to 5.0.2.7 which is a must to install the rom I'm about to link.
Next go to this thread
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11697-rom-cdma-aosp-ics-cm9-build-31-0104-x-2/
At the bottom of the first post download the 3.1 ROM the 3.1 Patch and the gapps files.
Once those are downloaded boot your tab up to normal operations and plug it into your PC again. Now transfer those three files to your tab.
Boot up into clockwork recovery wipe the cache, dalvik, and do a factory data reset. Then flash the 3.1 file first, then flash the 3.1 Patch, then flash the gapps files.
If everything says it installed correctly the only things that won't be working are camera (which it does work in panorama mode) and possibly 3G. (Never tested 3G as I only use wifi).
Can you please post pictures and how can I check which cwm I already have? If I already have 5.0 can I just go ahead and flash? One more thing is this a whole new ICS or the ones going around. Thank you much
So I checked and I got 4.0 cwm. With that said. I don't have access to a pc. Is there any other way to upgrade to 5.0 cwm? PLEASE someone reply with yes. I'm getting bored with this andcwpuld like to try ICS. Thanks

Without access to a PC I think you are making life very difficult for yourself.
You do not state what Tab you have; below I linked to the install for the P1010 only...I did this for reference because you will see it required Odin to flash it i.e. access to a PC.

Thank for the reply. Yeah I know it makes it, harder just seeing if there was a way around it. I'm playing with the sprint galaxy tab. Not much to play with out there for it.
What is the difference with these 2 and which one should i choose. I got the alpha 3 right now

Hm... I'll chosse Cyanogenmod 9, I dont know because my tab is p1010 (no ics or cm9), but i think that Cyanogenmod is better.
Hey, did any of you try CM9? I tried 3 times and every time fail. Even after patched zImage came out. I can enter to recovery, do wipe factory, wipe cache but device doesn't boot. Stuck on inital GalaxyTab/SAmsung logo. Cant ask in correct thread as this is my first post.
I uploaded 1000L.zip, then with Heimdall uploaded zImage. Tried with 1000L.zip with replaced zImage in it but this zip can;t be installed (wrong file or sth).
Hi
i would download CM9 because GPS works
Do you know - what version of Google Voice Recognition is used in Alpha 3?
In CM9 you only have standard voice input without "open microphone" feature.
I've installed CM9, and it works, but it's an alpha and not for daily use. The developers are working hard, but there are no easily installable packages yet, or instructions how to get it installed or working. I started with Overcome 4.1, and got the current build. As it is, it's for the P1000L, so you have to get the P1000 kernel as well, and you have to replace the one in the ZIP with that one. You shouldn't just create a new ZIP, because it needs to be signed, and a new one won't be. Then you can update with recovery.
A lot of stuff works, but a number aren't, and as the phone is one of those not working (yet), people who want to just use the Tab probably shouldn't try this. If you like to get developing, or want to help out, know what you're doing and don't mind having a not fully functioning Tab, you can look up the the thread in the development section, get stuck in.
I installed CM9 yesterday and am LOVING it! I followed all directions from Humberos and others that are diligently working on bugs and have almost all functions working (calls/2g/3g/wifi/etc).
Camera doesn't work in normal functions, but will capture an image in panorama mode. This is coming along nicely!
CM9 and Alpha 3 has their good and bad, not to forget, both are still in testing stage and not meant for daily use at the moment.
For now it seems that cm9 has the upper hand in being more stable.
you could also try icedBoca... like the others, different things work
atm i'm on CM9 and most of the stuff works, but i can't connect to "hidden" wifi networks and internal sd / external sd mounting is a little bit mixed up
CM9 of course, I have the galaxy tab P1000N, and i have problems with alpha3 to much bugs and never fix them. Try to use CM9 with Humberos kernel, the room are much better and stable, free lag and never shut down. if u dont like try to use Boca rc1 final version
CM9
CM9 is better. I've tried both on my GSM P1000 and the CM9 is more refined and the repo is being constantly updated if you want to build it yourself.
Yep, CM9 is better but the Alpha 3 is good with few defaults...
I can't wait to flash the two...
What about HW acceleration with CM9 ? The build can play 720p but we don't know if we can play with big games like GTA...
CM9 is whole lot better, it has bluetooth, GPS and many more things working compared to Alpha 3. Today they have even declared USB Hosting is also working.
However, I would wait a little, till they incorporate all the small bugfixes in the ROM/Kernel.

Have you wiped dalvik cache?
BTW I recommend you to use the flashable kernel (Download Page then go to "CwM flashable - Kernel", press P1000 or the appropriate model and download)
In fact a flashable zip should be SignApp'd. Have you do this after you modified a flashable zip. Ask the best friend in the new era how!
One question.. are the roms like, interchangable? Can I switch to each ROMs as per needed?
Also, can I downgrade back to a 2.3 version of Android afterwards?

With CWM/Recoverymode ,no. The problem is the ext4 formating. It is only possible if you flash the firmware 2.3 complete new with odin.
Just got this tab, and want to upgrade it from the crappy Verizon firmware. Would like the advanced features and root, but it must be stable for work and it must do 3G and/or 4G.
Apparently I have to install a ROM that is specifically for the SCH-i800 and not for the P1000? So how do I identify which ROMs are suitable?
I used to use CM7 on my Nexus One and now use MIUI which I think is great. Experiences on either, or some other flavor?
I am aware that ICS is available, but have the impression that it is not complete or stable. So I'd just as soon stay with Honeycomb or maybe lower as long as it can be relied on.
OK message received, there is none.
This matches my research. CM9 is shot through with bugs, and MIUI development is dead. No other contenders.
So I guess I stay with the factory firmware, root it, remove the crapware and set up security.

UGH, thank you JT. I am having a helluva time with this thing.
Trying SuperOneClick, but it does not recognize the device. No one says, but I suspect it depends on ADB. ADB apparently does not have the drivers for the SCH-i800, and I've no idea where to get them.
The Samsung sync software would not install in my XP running in VirtualBox -- drivers failed to install. So I plan on just putting files on the SD in another machine since I run Debian exclusively.
And there doesn't seem to be an alternative recovery like Clockwork or Amon Ra, but maybe I'm wrong.
Pretty much given up on flashing any better ROM, although I know you've done some good work, maybe for CDMA.
I'll check out that more applicable forum.
I also have the SCH-I800 from Verizon and the only ROM that I found that works with barely any issues is the GB 2.3.5 Galaxy Cube 3. You can find it here:

If you have any questions or if you find any new working ROMS please let me know. Good luck.
