Seen an alpha 3 ICS rom. Can I just download that and flash it over my current rom or does it habecto be done certain way. I've flashed before on my evo but this seems a little bit more complicated

I'd rather go the full procedure they describe within their thread - imho especially you have needs for clockworkmod. Found that to be a quite safe way for me.
I would I just don't have access to a pc. Does ICS run fine on your tablet. Is it worth it
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
Once you have CWM Recovery installed, getting the ICS Alpha on your tab is not difficult if it's listed as supported in the thread.
Only thing: This is an ALPHA build. That means many things are not functional. The build is aimed at developers/testers.
Having given a shot at it, this build is surely not a daily driver for someone who needs its tab to be functional and reliable. Many of those problems have work arounds however but since the tablet is not mostly used by myself, I did not take the risk of having it be unreliable...
In short: it should work and not eat your hamster... But it is not a fully functional rom yet, be prepared for some trouble... Be sure you know how to go back in case of trouble... and read instructions carefully
If you want a good ICS rom here ya go. FYI!!! THIS IS FOR CDMA TABS!!!
Get rooted and CWM'd via Rodderick's thread in our Development section.
From there do the following (all credit to JT from here on out)
Download http://k.22aaf3.com/jt1134/vzwtab/cwm-recovery-5.0.2.7.tar
Extract the contents. You will have two files zImage and recovery.bin
Odin these two files to your tab while your tab is plugged in to the PC and in Download mode. This will bring your clockworkmod up to 5.0.2.7 which is a must to install the rom I'm about to link.
Next go to this thread
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11697-rom-cdma-aosp-ics-cm9-build-31-0104-x-2/
At the bottom of the first post download the 3.1 ROM the 3.1 Patch and the gapps files.
Once those are downloaded boot your tab up to normal operations and plug it into your PC again. Now transfer those three files to your tab.
Boot up into clockwork recovery wipe the cache, dalvik, and do a factory data reset. Then flash the 3.1 file first, then flash the 3.1 Patch, then flash the gapps files.
If everything says it installed correctly the only things that won't be working are camera (which it does work in panorama mode) and possibly 3G. (Never tested 3G as I only use wifi).
Can you please post pictures and how can I check which cwm I already have? If I already have 5.0 can I just go ahead and flash? One more thing is this a whole new ICS or the ones going around. Thank you much
So I checked and I got 4.0 cwm. With that said. I don't have access to a pc. Is there any other way to upgrade to 5.0 cwm? PLEASE someone reply with yes. I'm getting bored with this andcwpuld like to try ICS. Thanks

Without access to a PC I think you are making life very difficult for yourself.
You do not state what Tab you have; below I linked to the install for the P1010 only...I did this for reference because you will see it required Odin to flash it i.e. access to a PC.

Thank for the reply. Yeah I know it makes it, harder just seeing if there was a way around it. I'm playing with the sprint galaxy tab. Not much to play with out there for it.

Okay first of all, I would like to apologize if this is being posted in the wrong forum, or if I am upsetting anybody by posting this. I have searched all over for a couple days trying to figure this out. This is my last resort, and I'm hoping you guys can help. All of your time and understanding is much appreciated!
So a little background. About a week ago, I rooted my AT&T Captivate 2.2(build number 1012 if that helps) using Superoneclick, and then flashed CM7.1 using clockworkmod. I was not satisfied with CM7.1(terrible battery for me, other various reasons). I then downloaded MIUI (not sure which version, the one available on the premium version of clockworkmod) and flashed it using clockworkmod. This started with the cm bootscreen, and then went to an MIUI bootscreen that played a little tune. The miui screen looped, and it would not go past this.
After rebooting and running into the same thing, I went to f\attempt to find a solution. I thought I backed up my rom, but it had been erased (issue with the external sd I think). I used an odin one click I found on here, but this odin one click brought me back to eclair 2.1, instead of 2.2. Up until now, I could get into both download and recovery mode using the three button method, and now I can't. I am not sure what to do exactly. I have read about getting it into download mode using adb, but I'm not sure if that would work in my situation, and I'm not too educated on adb or android sdk. I stayed up almost all night last night, and now have researched most of today, not making much progress.
Thanks again for your time!
Just to clarify have you used all button methods in order to try to get into download mode. Seems as though flashing bootloaders may have f'ed up you combos. I have a couple suggestions. I'll edit my post as I find the urls to post for you
Stock GB ROM you should be using -- http://www.mediafire.com/?05nemq5yyn5fuqf, this one has bootloaders, but preferably you should use stock odin roms that don't mess with the BL's (after this of course, since yours are messed up right now).
Now of course this depends upon you getting into download mode. If you can use ROMmanager (btw, I don't recommend you download your roms from rommanager, as that will not always be the most up to date and may not be the one for you) to get into recovery mode, then from there go to advanced then reboot download. However some kernels do not support this. Try the cable methods before trying this method.
First of all, I appreciate your help Mikel.canovas. I have used all the button methods. I can no longer get into recovery or download. (Romtoolbox enables me to get into recovery(2E), but not download). I now have root access, but am not able to sideload apps, and apparently rommanager free isn't available on the market. I did buy rommanager premium, but unfortunately now that I basically reset my phone, it doesn't show up as bought (known issue, apparently not resolved?), and even after I bought it again, it says I need the free version to even use the premium version.
Should I go through the process to be able to sideload apps? Or will romtoolbox do the trick? Rom toolbox gives me the option to install a rom from my sd card. Should I use that, and select the GB ROM you provided? I'm not sure I understood exactly how you want me to get that GB ROM onto my phone.
What I want to eventually have is either MIUI or rom fasty on my phone. If possible, could you give me some steps on how to reach that goal?
Thanks again for your time. Eclair on the captivate is not pleasant, especially since I had a taste of CM.
Well first off I highly recommend Mosaic over CM or Fasty, solely because of performance and battery life. However that is all subjective.
Ah since you're rom is sending to 2E recovery, you're not rooted with cwm. You need to flash another kernel that supports this. Afterwards, If you can get into CWM, I recommend putting CM onto your sdcard and flashing from there. After booting into CM hold down the power button, press reboot, choose reboot download. See if that works. If not, does adb reboot download work for you? If not again, I recommend trying another USB port, reinstalling drivers, trying different button combos. I've had issues getting into download mode in the past and, trust me, it is VERY frustrating.
Well first of all, before you back into flashing stuff, don't flash to stock unless you have done everything possible with the tools on your phone. I'm assuming you gave it at least 5 minutes to boot up, as the first boot can variably take longer. You could go into recovery and wipe stuff, or you could have gone back to CM7. A flash to stock is probably never necessary in the situation you reported.
Anyway, if you can get into recovery, maybe try getting a kernel that allows you to reboot into download from recovery. Although that will depends on what kernel you are on right now, as I know speedmod kernel has that option, but you would need to get to download to flash that.
And as another poster wrote, have you tried all button combinations?

Or download SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. You can then flash kernels with the app. without having to go into download mode. Very handy.
Once again guys, thank you for your time. A little more information:
Kernel:
2.6.29
[email protected]#12
Baseband:
I897UCJF6
Let me know if you need any other information.
I am able to get into download mode using the terminal emulator in rom tool box. (The free version of rom manager is no longer on the market)
I was hoping one of you could give me a step by step of what I need to do, with links to downloads.
And yes, I have tried all off the three button methods. Also, I probably should have researched more before I flashed back to stock.

If nobody beats me to it, I will post you some links tomorrow when I'm on my laptop.
Oh, and miui won't really give you better battery life than CM7. It basically is CM7 with a different UI. I loved CM7 a ton, so if you are having issues with it, let me know! With the right kernel and other settings, battery life is pretty decent, as long as you charge nightly.

What is the build number of your phone? It's located under your battery, looks something like 10.06,10.07, 10.08 and so on
Alright, thank you, I will be checking back tomorrow.
Eventually what I want is to have the working 3 button combos again for both download and recovery mode, and either the miui, mosaic or rom fasty on my phone.
Easy flash GB BL's and you won't have to worry about 3 button problems!
If you didnt do a Master Clear, now would be the time. Make sure you back up anything you want to keep. MC will erase EVERYTHING on your internal SD
Remove your Micro SD, and your SIM
Download:
OneClick Root
SideLoadWonderMachine This also has CWM, 3ButtonFix and ROM Manager in the zip
Make sure you have Debugging enabled
Connect to your PC
Run One Click Root, and follow the instructions, reboot
Run Sideload Wonder Machine and direct it to install ROM Manager
Copy the update.zip(CWM) and 3Button Fix to your phone
Open ROM manager and "reboot to recovery"
You'll go thru the boot twice to get to CWM
In CWM install the 3 Button Fix
I usually pop out the battery and check it before I put the ROM in.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! DO NOT TRY TO USE THE 3ButtonFix while you have a GB ROM installed you WILL brick your phone. It only works on 2.1, and 2.2 ROM's
using this one click package I now am able to manually enter download and recovery :

1012, do you think any of my problems would have to do with the build number? WHen I got it, it had froyo with the working button combinations.
Sorry, I didn't see that until now.
I now have clockwork recovery, and I'm about to try out fasty. Thanks again guys.
So can I delete this thread? And if so, should I? I've found plenty of threads that seem outdated, and fill up the search engine.

The only reason I asked about the build # is because the 10.08's were pretty commonly known to have 3 button issues. Also, anything above 1012 and using Odin1 Click could soft brick. I was just checking as I was offering info

Yep. Because these are Odin or Heimdall One Clicks.
You can't just flash to a GB firmware/rom from Eclair/Froyo without using Odin or Heimdall to at least get the Gb Bootloaders. You cannot just go through CWM recovery unless u already have the GB Bootloaders.
Of course u can get it all through mini Kies, the official GB 2.3.5 KK4 update that is.
What is the difference with these 2 and which one should i choose. I got the alpha 3 right now

Hm... I'll chosse Cyanogenmod 9, I dont know because my tab is p1010 (no ics or cm9), but i think that Cyanogenmod is better.
Hey, did any of you try CM9? I tried 3 times and every time fail. Even after patched zImage came out. I can enter to recovery, do wipe factory, wipe cache but device doesn't boot. Stuck on inital GalaxyTab/SAmsung logo. Cant ask in correct thread as this is my first post.
I uploaded 1000L.zip, then with Heimdall uploaded zImage. Tried with 1000L.zip with replaced zImage in it but this zip can;t be installed (wrong file or sth).
Hi
i would download CM9 because GPS works
Do you know - what version of Google Voice Recognition is used in Alpha 3?
In CM9 you only have standard voice input without "open microphone" feature.
I've installed CM9, and it works, but it's an alpha and not for daily use. The developers are working hard, but there are no easily installable packages yet, or instructions how to get it installed or working. I started with Overcome 4.1, and got the current build. As it is, it's for the P1000L, so you have to get the P1000 kernel as well, and you have to replace the one in the ZIP with that one. You shouldn't just create a new ZIP, because it needs to be signed, and a new one won't be. Then you can update with recovery.
A lot of stuff works, but a number aren't, and as the phone is one of those not working (yet), people who want to just use the Tab probably shouldn't try this. If you like to get developing, or want to help out, know what you're doing and don't mind having a not fully functioning Tab, you can look up the the thread in the development section, get stuck in.
I installed CM9 yesterday and am LOVING it! I followed all directions from Humberos and others that are diligently working on bugs and have almost all functions working (calls/2g/3g/wifi/etc).
Camera doesn't work in normal functions, but will capture an image in panorama mode. This is coming along nicely!
CM9 and Alpha 3 has their good and bad, not to forget, both are still in testing stage and not meant for daily use at the moment.
For now it seems that cm9 has the upper hand in being more stable.
you could also try icedBoca... like the others, different things work
atm i'm on CM9 and most of the stuff works, but i can't connect to "hidden" wifi networks and internal sd / external sd mounting is a little bit mixed up
CM9 of course, I have the galaxy tab P1000N, and i have problems with alpha3 to much bugs and never fix them. Try to use CM9 with Humberos kernel, the room are much better and stable, free lag and never shut down. if u dont like try to use Boca rc1 final version
CM9
CM9 is better. I've tried both on my GSM P1000 and the CM9 is more refined and the repo is being constantly updated if you want to build it yourself.
Yep, CM9 is better but the Alpha 3 is good with few defaults...
I can't wait to flash the two...
What about HW acceleration with CM9 ? The build can play 720p but we don't know if we can play with big games like GTA...
CM9 is whole lot better, it has bluetooth, GPS and many more things working compared to Alpha 3. Today they have even declared USB Hosting is also working.
However, I would wait a little, till they incorporate all the small bugfixes in the ROM/Kernel.

Have you wiped dalvik cache?
BTW I recommend you to use the flashable kernel (Download Page then go to "CwM flashable - Kernel", press P1000 or the appropriate model and download)
In fact a flashable zip should be SignApp'd. Have you do this after you modified a flashable zip. Ask the best friend in the new era how!
One question.. are the roms like, interchangable? Can I switch to each ROMs as per needed?
Also, can I downgrade back to a 2.3 version of Android afterwards?

With CWM/Recoverymode ,no. The problem is the ext4 formating. It is only possible if you flash the firmware 2.3 complete new with odin.
I've read up several threads on this an I think what I want to do is a bit unique but I am not completely sure. I rooted my phone with Odin a week ago going from official gingerbread and used the stock Kernel. Root went off without a hitch but wasn't able to get into CWM recovery so I did some searching and just now flashed to the Corn Kernel 7.05. Works Perfect !
I want to now use mobile Odin to try out a few new roms as I can upgrade my phone now but want to give this a shot to breath some new life into my nearly 2 year old cappy. Flashing the kernel with mobile odin was s snap but I guess after reading the how and developers page I am lost on what types of ROM's I use with it. I'm new to all of this so judging stages of stability if not something I am sure about. I want some I wont have to compromise much with but will broaden my horizons some. I am so new cyanogen and maybe doc's ICS mod are the only ones I really know about but I don't know if those work with Odin or if I need to use CMW.
So final questions are these:
- Mod that will be stable and I can flash using only mobile odin or CMW (not using a PC) ?
- Does creating a backup of the ROM in CMW allow me to fix a bad ROM flash ?
- Is there an ICS build for cappy that will work for my situation ?
Thanks again ! ( I promise I used the search function and even the mobile odin thread but couldn't find what I was looking for)

1. You can basically flash almost anything that isn't stock through CWM; you don't really need mobile odin too much. There are a lot of things considered "stable" that may not be stable for you. I considered alpha CM9 "stable," but others may disagree. It is up to you to find a ROM that suits you the best.
Keep in mind, you can only use Mobile Odin on Samsung-based BML ROMs.
2. To fix a "bad" ROM flash, you'd probably just flash the ROM again. But you can use the backup to restore your phone to its exact state at time of backup (with few exceptions).
3. What exactly is your situation? No matter what, I recommend CM9 nightlies but there certainly are other things out there to try that could work for you. Everything is CWM flashable, no Odin.
Just wondering, why can't you use a computer at all? You may need one in case you screw something up down the road.

1. Thank for clearing that up. I was using mobile odin at first because I wasn't able to boot into recovery with CWM but with the corn kernel that fixed everything and I've been getting myself more accustomed to working in there. Mobile odin seemed good for me to flash the new kernel easily and care free.
2. I was worried about a bad flash because I've read that using nandroid backups can be iffy (That's what CWM uses from what I have seen). Should I trust these backups ? I backed up everything in TiBu. I looked at the Wiki for cyanogen mod and it seems odd that the steps to flash the ROM's in CWM are very few so having few steps makes me think they have left something out or there is a step that is somehow understood I am missing)
3. I live in the boonies and my internet is even slower even though it's *cringe* 1.5 DSL haha. As far as my situation I mean something that would allow me to mess around with my phone some while knowing its stable because with 3 kids and having to have my phone I didn't want to be out of pocket for an extended period of time. I've been reading that ICS requires you to go back to stock to flash another ICS ROM but in my mind that doesn't seem too inconvenient.
I come from the desktop world and work well with hardware, not so much with software knowledge so trying to teach myself some new stuff since mobile seems to be here to stay. Making just a rudimentary app is a goal of mine even if no one cares so starting at the beginning trying to learn. Don't want to be one of those guys the noob video is made for who just begs for the way to root a phone and never contributes haha.
Thanks for your help !

My suggestion would be that, if a file was placed on your SDcard that you're not aware of, and aren't sure where you go them from.. and ESPECIALLY if you don't have instructions when you download them, DONT USE THEM. I'm biased, so I'll point you toward my rom. Take a look here, it's ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813917
However, if you take a look around the Android Development forums, there's quite a few roms on there. :]
Agreed...delete those zips...just because of not knowing what they are. And just go with the ICS Rom of your choice and it's specific install instructions in it's OP.

and I think it should say 1897UCKBI
I used the link that was given to me in the post above installed MIUI 2.8.3...
Please can someone advise me at this point?
Thanks
Start from scratch and re install. When you restore from titanium backup restore apps only. Not system apps. System app or system data will break your phone.
Also, the i9000 is the baseband. Essentially telling you what modem the phone is from. It is cosmetic. If you have any further questions ask in my thread so I can assisy

I just switched from ios to android and i've jaibroken several devices i now realize the two are very different. i am having trouble flashing a full STABLE rom...nightly are no problem...... I download a stable/nightly rom from either goo.im or xda-developers ON MY PHONE and it dowloads into data/media/downloads instead of sdcard/downloads (not sure if that matters) and after i wipe to install i chose the zip and attempt to flash it, two or 3 seconds pass and then i get a failed flash, only with a full/stable rom... the nightly flash just fine....i understand i must be doing something wrong, it might be the file, might be that the htc one is too new...any ways, anyone that can help i will be grateful!! the stable ones i have trouble with are ViperONE2.0.0 -made sure it was for att version- and Revolt- (both are .zip) Im using CUSTOM RECOVERY TWRP....thanks again!
I'm not very good at troubleshooting, but if you're new there may be a couple things that I could suggest that you haven't tried
So I always try to download directly from XDA... That's just been the easiest for me and that way I can read up on the ROM on the same page that I downloaded it from.
Before you flash (on twrp i think it's like the "install" button" you're going to want to use the factory wipe button to do a full factory reset. Doing so won't mess with the contents of the 'sdcard' directory.
Also always try and make sure the rom was downloaded over wifi. You ensure a higher quality download that way with a lower chance of data getting mixed up in the download.
And finally, a lot of the time nightlies are more stable than the official release, especially if the official is a few weeks or months old... The nightlies will contain fixes for bugs present in the official.
