I mean no disrespect, but the majority of people on here are very helpful. But I wish some people on these forums would stop being so cryptic with their "I know something you don't know" posts & assuming everybody else is as clever as them. That's why forums get bloated with crap & make it hard work to find what you're actually looking for.
Just get to the point. No more half-answers please!

Cryptic answers actually serve a purpose. Rather than spoon feeding the same information over and over to different people, it encourages them to go do their own research. Usually the 'cryptic' answer contains the keywords necessary for somebody to do a search for themselves.
I find it more effective to piece together information that i've found myself than to have it explained in a way that doesn't always make sense to me. It's the difference between being in Primary school and University. In the latter you're expected to do your own work.

In a sense, I do agree with you on that. Like I said, most of the people are very helpful with their answers. Perhaps cryptic was the wrong word. Terse would have been a better choice of word. The problem for me being a noob to Android is that there is so much misinformation around that to find what you are actually looking for, you have to sift through so much crap first. This could be avoidable if people didn't just give the stock answer "search for it".
Sorry, I'm just a pedantic fool. I don't want to be spoon fed, but I do want a relevant quality answer. I'm no genius, but when I answer a post, I try to be as helpful & unambiguous as possible. I just expect the same.

On one hand I agree with the op that sometimes people can give very vague and condescending answers which can be frustrating for a new user or someone with an issue they need to address asap.
Its never a good thing to dismiss someone as a stupid n00b and not try to help them out.
On the other hand, I think it is beneficial to give someone a push in the right direction and not just spoonfeed them an answer.
When I first came to XDA I knew NOTHING, it was only through being encouraged to read and research my problems that I got to the point where I was able to help others with theirs.
There is also the argument that as this is a development site and not just a one stop shop for answers to questions which Google can answer for you 95% of the time, if you are not able/willing to search and learn then your in the wrong place.

I dont mind helping step by step but always read all instructions and you should be good and if you have issues along the way then ask dont ask me to find stuff for you search and type out steps that are already on this forum.
Ill do that every once in awhile but must be contacted and them understand it takes time to write out a new manual
Indeed. Well, to what half-answers do you refer? Citations, please!

What I did when I joined this forum (and before) was too not only use the search feature but search other sites, Google it, also I checked other forums and blogs. Articles from Lifehacker, the unlockr, other tech blogs...and you know what, it DID take what seemed like forever to get the SDK set up, find the right drivers ect. But you know what DIDN'T HAPPEN, I didn't get one terse or rude answer, I didn't get flamed and I learned alot more in the process. I can root phones and flash ROMs with complete confidence now. I'm not saying my way is the right way but when I did/do ask questions I get a much better response because I've got some knowledge under my belt.

I agree somewhat to the OP, as I was a n00b once too. It was frustrating figuring out issues on my own and reading threads for hours. But I lurked for months when I first started modding seems and setting up QPST and stuff when I first started "hacking" my old motorolas. I eventually got a grasp on things and have been trying to help out where I can.
I can honestly see how old timers and those experienced in all different forms of modding these devices can get terse and not want to just spoon feed the info to the new users. The new users need to learn how to search, follow instructions and get well read on the fundamentals before assaulting the developers with questions answered earlier in threads or in the wiki.
It's a two way street, but I can assure you that it is worth the journey. You can't just take offense when someone when someone doesn't answer directly or refers you to the search function is short answered. And devs/experienced users aren't trying to offend you. Every person here just needs to get along!

noobs r a factor in this forum
You know I was and still am a noob at rooting and flashing roms but instead of reading and researching the forums, I find that alot of people just keeps asking questions about simple things and want someone else to do the research for them. Its kind of annoying at times. There has been times where I have asked a question or 10 but trust me I've read the forums first.
Anyone else feel this way?

I like the one which rom do I want to run like we know their personal taste
You always start as a noob. Today's annoying noob can be tomorrow's brilliant developer who makes all the goodies for free! People need to stop b***ng about noobs! I was once a noob when it came to SEO, web design and then I was the one helping hundreds of other new noob designers. It's a process you know
That's what stickies are for. They're in every forum on every site, and usually contain useful information. Anyone new should always start there for information. Maybe the rest of the forum should be unlocked for viewing/posting, once the sticky has been viewed.
Noobs
I agree the only difficulty is that I find the search tools on the forums difficult to use. There might be a better search engine or way to orginize the threads to solve this issue.
This is true here and in practically any forum on the internet.
There are noobs (which we all were at one point) and then there are idiots, the ones who register just to get their question answered, never contribute anything to any forum they visit, and are just too lazy to use the search or read stickies.
I was new to the Vibrant and somehow managed to flash my phone and root without having to post a single question. Stickies and search provided all the info necessary.
Some people just can't be helped or want to be spoon fed. Whenever I see a new thread asking something that has already been answered numerous times or is stickied I sometimes wonder if this person has never used an internet forum before, or perhaps are new to the internet itself and don't know their left mouse button from the scroll wheel.
I used to ridicule them now I just ignore them.
That ^ has to be the best signature on XDA. Period.
how do I flash this?
I see no issue with new people asking questions that have already been asked.
The search feature here is sometimes annoying.
Plus, if it annoys anyone so much, just ignore the question and let someone else who doesn't mind answering it to answer it!
I agree on the part that some people say about everyone starting off as a noob.
But god, they don't even TRY.
Before I joined XDA-Developers I had NEVER owned a smartphone.
But I managed to root, flash, unroot and unbrick my phone by myself, just searching around.
What the **** is wrong with u people??? The forums are specifically made for damn noobs, we all were noobs so dont keep **** complaining about damn noobs and all that **** ... Setiously, theres too many ignorant **** on the vibrant forums, wich is y many developers have ditched us here, so quit **** complaining and contribute to the damn forums by simply helping people who need *** help, not by driving them away!!!!
And next time please keep this thread civil and easily readable for others. There are stickies for a reason, and for the most part they cover the basics to get the newcomer up and ready to start flashing the device. Perhaps a mod should change the stickies link to be in large, bold red letters and name it "FREE MONEY. REDEEM IT TODAY!" to encourage visitors. While a newcomer can feel welcome to post a question if they are truly confused, there is a Q&A section for that kind of question, not the general.

hey guys is there any root/roms for this device yet? ive tried searching and havent come up with anything... it all seems to be for the AT&T vivid...
The Raider x710a is the HTC Vivid, at least that's what it says under my battery cover.
Does the Rogers device have the same code?
Root's always been available for Canadian Raiders as your bootloader was unlocked much earlier than ours. custom ROMs are interchangeable by region.
well its actually a bell one, same device but i tried loading the ics official RUU from AT&T and it was a no go?

Learn the art of posting on XDA. This should be in general.
You asked for root and ROMs. For you, this has been available for what feels like centuries. Just looking at the dev board would have gotten your answer.
Now you're talking about ICS RUU, which is neither of those. Searching anywhere would have immediately told you that you need an OTA with the new HBOOT and the Canadian carriers have not released that yet!
Ai ya yai, it's no surprise that PG left.
ok so its rooted, and if im corrected there is no ics available to flash?

A lot of it flew out the window when PG left. There were so many people who kept asking the same questions over and over, who didn't search nor follow instructions, then proceeding to come here and whine about why their phone/ROM didn't work. PG got fed up. It's part of why the development here is so weak.
This posed question really is no different. I can provide decent responses to good questions and demonstrated competence, but it's immensely tedious to try to respond to the same questions over and over when the answer is readily plastered all over the place.
It was common understanding in the old Captivate forum that one is to search before posting, then post their question. For some reason, the problem wasn't nearly as pronounced there, and all places in which it appeared was in the General section. I feel like the convoluted (by comparison) HTC setup is causing a lot of angst among those new to this, but the information to do things properly is still present on the forums as much as it was before. All people must do is read thoroughly and follow directions. Nobody is responsible for your device except you, so it's your fault if you brick your $500+ phone.

I can understand the intolerance for whiners, but he wasn't whining. I know the history of PG and the reasons he left.
The quick quips telling someone to search really aren't helpful. Maybe they did and it was confusing or they didn't find the answer.
For that matter, if searching is always the response at XDA, we don't need XDA since all of the same answers are available on other websites and can be Googled.

I'm not talking about this isolated instance. I'm saying in general. OP didn't whine, but his second question posted a very simple and very common question whose answer is found all over the shop.
Every thread I've read ever since joining XDA has a clear instruction set. Never found any problems, and any unclear bits was usually cleaned up within at most a day. Especially for things that are guided/intuitive like RUU updating or CWM flashing. Anything deviating from that has always had clear and express instructions.
I agree with you on the searching front. It's just that by consequence, XDA is a pinnacle for Android development information and Google's search is not localized to the forum (though it can be forced), nor are all its threads indexed with the latest information on the latest issues, unlike the forum search and its ability to parse posts as they are made. Likewise, most of the information here cannot be found elsewhere unless heavily publicised.
My wish is for XDA's culture to have more autonomy and less incompetence. XDA is more of an instruction manual when it comes to knowing the ins, outs and modifications that you can do to your device.
Anyway, let's end this before it erupts. I am now abandoning this thread.
Ive been a member here for a long time and while ive held my breath for years ive finally had to get some things off my chest. For one thing I have been a member of multiple communities and multiple forums for many, many years and I understand that while every community is a vast network of people as well as projects, I can say here is the one place without a shadow of a doubt that I almost never post simply because i know one of two things will always happen. One I will either be ignored or two someone will tell me to use the search bar. I understand that there are quite literally thousands upon thousands of pages of things so when either myself or someone who has just started here goes to search and even advanced search there are still thousands upon thousands of choices. If we are a community built on helping each other, why are we not really doing so? Im not asking for you to do the work for me, Im not asking to directly link the post, im not asking for the work to be done for us. What Im asking is why dont we give others a helping hand by you know, giving them a "path"? Saying to them "Search for the words so and so and soforth and soon". Im curious what others think on this subject.
I would say that I think this thread already exists and this should have been posted there.

Maybe not, but it comes across as one. You say "If we are a community built on helping each other ..." - that is the problem. XDA is originally a site for Developers - not for noobs to join up and start demanding immediate answers, people to do the work for them, Devs to include everything the noob wants in their ROM, getting pissy when they don't receive an answer in an hour, swearing when they are told to search (not because we are too lazy or arrogant to help, but because searching means they will read, learn and understand WHY and WHAT - so they are far less likely to then screw their phone up totally and start blaming XDA for making that happen).
Does that answer your questions?
It also gets frustrating seeing the same exact thread opened again and again because someone refuses to click the search button. You will notice that if someone states that they made an effort to search prior to opening a thread they will more than likely get flamed less and get an actual link to the thread they are looking for.

I realize that, however this is a public forum and we were all new at one time struggling to find out more about our phones. I am not adding for immediate answer I'm saying why can't we say "hey, go look for this" instead it just makes things easier and more friendly. I can't tell you how many times ive actually used the search button and ended up with 7000 threads and this is using advanced. Some people don't have time to read everything in those threads.

As pointed out above, there is an existing thread where people can rant about things (within reason & the rules).
Thread closed.
I've read over the last few days multiple posts coming from more than one person that go like ~"I know what you're taking about, I'm a developer too", "dude I'm not a noob I'm a developer too", "I'm better than you, I can develop my custom ROM", and so on.
Truth is...
You're probably not a developer.
Using dsixda's kitchen, UOT kitchen and winzip (and maybe apktools) does not make you a developer.
Following tutorials and copying/pasting smali code does not make you a developer.
You're an interested user, maybe even a themer, but don't be arrogant. Know the difference.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's great that everyone is willing to learn, and these methods are a good place to start. But I say again: you're not a developer.
Call yourself an interested user, a ROM cook, a learning newbie, a themer if you're good at that, but not a developer.
Obviously, the same applies to me.

Well a developer includes in his work researching, designing, implementing, and testing software. A person who develops stand-alone software (that is more than just a simple program) and got involved with all phases of the development (design and code) is a software developer. On the other hand the one that only implements and does the copy paste of the code is called a programmer. I hope that i was specific and i made myself clear.
ok so we are not devs we know that so why make this thread?

They are new so might not understand the rules, yet, but they are here to learn so we should help them not tell them they are worthless noobs and dont deserve your help.
We all learn here and thats what makes XDA a good place to hang out.
No one on this forum is better than anyone else sore may be more advanced along the learning curve.

If you know that, good. Feel free to disregard this rant.
Im new to xda and I posted in a few wrong sections. Would have thought its the end of the world or something. I didn't do it to make some of you mad. But being mean like some are turns people away from this great community. Treat people like you wanna be treated!!! that's all.

Nobody here has anything against anyone. Yeah some outbursts are uncalled for. But that is rare. Must be some personal problems or somebody having a bad day. Senior members, contributors, developers etc all have gone through that phase. So dont be offended by anybody's rude behaviour. It wasnt , is and will not be anything personal against anyone. If he ir she has been rude to you....they will realize that later on.

I know that everyone here is human (i guess?) and may have a bad day, but the image that xda passes is that she's not welcoming anyone. It already starts with that noob video that makes me to go through a deep depression. Not complaining about xda, but being nice will bring more people, and sooner or later, more developers, making this community bigger and bigger.

Lol....No u took it all wrong brother. That video isnt about showing anyone down....i have seen it...rather its an informative one accrding to me.....it clearly tells you that "Noob" isnt welcome. Ofcourse....it good to be warned before you start.....newbie is a good thing....people who do not want to read and ask all silly questions when all of it is already mentioned in the OP or a few pages back....are termed as "noobs". When i joined XDA i didnt even had this phone with me....for 6 months what i did was to read and clarified doubts....used google....It has almost every answer to your question...believe . I am still not a developer, nor a themer nor a rom cook....i dont get to spend much time on pc.....even then this googling and reading has given me enough knowledge to clarify my doubts myself. XDA is not a human or animal.....its all of us together....that video was sarcastic and informative. Such videos dont depress you...its the people here on XDA who are responsible for your depression and happiness. And as far as i know...here people are quiet helpful....just a few "anger bursts" but that i believe is quiet fine and normal... We have people from all cultures and countries. Diffrences do tend to occur.
Where do u suggest to start to learn if I know these "basic" things and I'd like to be a developer of this phone?

This thread is still alive?
There are plenty of tutorials here and in the development section. You can also check the ROM cooking XDA forum.

Yeah, man, you're right. Because of your answer, i've realized that being a noob is not a bad thing. Everyone started as a noob. Act like one is the problem. Starting a new thread to ask if we got jelly bean means asking for a "anger burst". Exactly like you said, by having a Galaxy Ace I/C/M, we got a lot of countries, like Brazil (from me) and countries from Asia. So, thanks for your answer, and sorry for your trouble.
GermainZ what you explained in the first post isn't developing, it's programming.
Everyone can be a developer, as long as they're helping the project, even if its only reporting glitches, bugs etc, they're still developers.
Programming on the other hand requires some experience but isn't that difficult as you think it might be, Just look at python lol, pretty much anyone who knows english can write in that.
I think you might need do a little research before posting such ****ty threads.

This is out of context now.
If I remember correctly, when I posted this, there was some kind of flame war going on between ROM cooks/users (not sure what exactly it was about, or who was involved - it doesn't matter). This thread was mostly to show that while everybody appreciates the effort, they shouldn't act as if they are superior. You really should have been there to understand.
The whole OP is exaggerated for that (and FYI, since you mentioned it, I can code basic stuff in C++/Java, and more advanced stuff in Python, tho I prefer Python as it's neat, has one of the best documentations I've seen, and I can execute it directly from within my bash scripts without any extra steps).

He wasnt showing anyone down....but he was just clearing the air as there were quite a number of people who were calling themselves developers and were showing some superiority in their behaviour with newbies or even other members.....which in any point is not acceptable. Doesnt matter whether you are recognised developer, themer, elite member or moderator.....here every one is contributing in their own way and every one is in the same level.
