I disagree, the iphone has amazing hardware and software and the app store is unrivaled. But it's a shame that Apple doesn't allow for a little more freedom.

I don't understand the iPhone hate in the world. The psychologist in me says there must be some jealousy. The iPhone does some things very, VERY well. It's beautifully designed hardware. It's very reliable and generally just works.
That said, there's a few reasons I like Android better:
- Better, less intrusive notification system
- More freedom in what to use - no apps blocked out because of stupid rules (think Google Voice)
- Swype keyboard availability
- Google Maps GPS
But the iPhone has:
- Better Applications, especially games
- Better hardware design (aesthetically) than any Android phone
- Less platform fragmentation and more regular updates
If Apple licensed Swype, and created something other than their pop-up notifications, I would seriously consider switching. No questions. Both are great products and should be recognized as such. Windows Phone 7 is also very nice for those who only need to do what it can do.
I'm surprised you don't hear it said more often but i've always seen the iphone as more of a ladies device, whereas Android is more for the gents.
Is that just me?
Men are generally more practical and we enjoy our tools, (ahem), ladies like to accessorise.

the first two your points for the iphone are subjective. for your third one, Forced updates are not necessarily a good thing.
Here are my subjective counter arguments.
Hardwarewise the iphone is lacking, (Sd card? USB port?) and is easily broken (not to mention antenna fail)
Software wise the iphone is lacking (neutered bluetooth, boring interface) The apps and games are not all that different to android, both markets are being constantly updated.
Apple have to release updates very often , Because its the only one phone apple got , So, they can easily do it but other OEM Cant do for all models

Sure, I'm being a big subjective, but so are you with "boring interface." The iPhone 4 is glass and metal. Premium materials all around in a way nothing compares to. Neutered Bluetooth? I quit caring about Bluetooth the day I got a smartphone. Bluetooth (when not crippled) is great on dumbphones, but seems to me to have little purpose on a smartphone. As for the "antenna fail" - it's mostly myth. People I know with iPhone 4's are getting great reception. You basically just have to avoid touching it on the antenna breaks - which are easy to see and clear to avoid, and they're not in places where MOST people would touch it in the normal use of the phone. The only way you'd really naturally touch them is if you're gripping the phone with your whole hand.
I'm not saying it's perfect, I love the flexibility of Android. I'm just saying - there's some things that Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc could learn from Apple on.

8 gb internal memory, has a link cable. AT&T had the antenna issue, issue fixed with Verizon version. AT&T network also part to blame on that too. The SD card and USB port are more like features, not actually needed.

Bluetooth works just fine for communication, and the interface is to each their own. I like it a lot. The apps and games I've seen and used on Ios are a lot more polished than those on Android. For a good reason though, Apple has control over the apps. Android has an open market. Plus, in my opinion the games on ios are way better. I only thing I like in games that android has that doesn't need root, are emulators.
I like both platforms, I wish frash would be more developed for ios. I might be getting on Verizon and getting one, if not probably gonna get the Thunderbolt if the LTE is only $30 and not $50.

That comment makes no sense whatsoever. An iphone is not simple because it only has one button. It's built that way because that's what the software needs.
even if it's the other way around (software optimized for hardware) the iphone is not a "toy phone". It's as fast and powerful as most android devices.
Apple's guidelines are a different story and it hampers the phone, but as a device, it can go head to head with any current android phone.

in short , i believe u meant to say : the revolutionary software is built around one magical button
Guys, seriously, what's the point in arguing this stuff. It just screams of jealousy. The iPhone 4 is great hardware. It's very similar inside to a Samsung Galaxy S. The screen is smaller, but higher resolution - different for different needs. The design is very elegant and classy.
The software? Eh, it's fast and looks good at first. I hate the popup in-your-face notifications though, and it's rather repetitive.
The App Store? This is where I really start to hate the iPhone - the "you can't do that because we say so" attitude. This would be fine if sideloading apps was allowed, but it's not. And THAT is my big issue with the iPhone.
But arguing that the hardware isn't very high end is silly. And the one button isn't even to make it simpler, it's not - having physical buttons is easier. It's to make it more minimalist and look nicer. The same reason by the time Apple finally started including multi-button mice with Macs, they did so once the technology was in place to make it look and feel like a one-button mouse. Sure, the one-button mouse was slow and hard to use. But it looked good. The new Apple mice are amazing though - one physical button, but a touch surface that recognizes where you're pushing on the mouse. Likewise with the new Apple trackpads - one GIANT touch surface with no discernable button, but it works great! The old true one-button Apple mice though were a crime against humanity - and there's a reason almost nobody professional actually used the mouse that came with their Mac in those days.

It's a button that does the same as the home button on any android device. So android can search or go back using physical buttons, there's no inherent difference that those options are built into iphone UI.

I do see a lot more women with iPhones, and the women that i do see with android phones (galaxy s or whatever), use all stock applications and launchers and maybe have Angry Birds on there or something.
Screens too small. I'll have me a nice big android phone any day.

Hello there,
I am using my HTC Desire with android for nearly two years now and I really like it. I've installed a lot of apps in this time and I noticed, that some of the apps have a really strong IOS influenced look, even if they're android only.
So what do you all think about that?
Cheers
Yes they do. Lots of average people choose Android because that lots of their devices are cheap. That is why lots of apps have an iOS feel and look
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
I would have to say no. Alot of people choose android because they don't like apple at all. The main people that use IOS looking apps and roms are normally new smartphone users.
That or people who appreciate decent design... even a design aesthetic.
It's a trait /many/ android apps (and sometimes the OS in general) appears to lack.
That's the great thing about android. You can make it look anyway you want. I mean sure alot of people like the iPhone look I guess but most hardcore android users don't. Personally I don't like how IOS looks at all. Everytime I see it it makes me think of my kids toys.

Yeah and you can get an iPhone for less then that as well. It all comes down to what you want.
Ok this is a thread I hope that will catch on. So basically I own an iPod and iPad and now I own an android phone and I love android phones, but there are still tons of features from iOS which I love and hope would be/have been implemented on updates
I'm sure most of you own an apple device and I just want this to be a thread where you describe features you love (even the smallest thing) on your apple devices that ANDROID DOES NOT HAVE and lets hope an android official would read it and add the features to future updates
Now let me Start off to say android NEEDs to have a stock ebook reader app, not from other providers that comes pre installed I'm taking like google books but better. I'm a readaholic and the apple iBooks is fabulous, I love the feature where you can go from day to night contrast, I know there is an app in the market with similar feature but its not easy on the eyes and just not comparable. Next is the dictionary I love the feature so if I didn't understand a word I would just highlight it and click on define and it would have the meaning and once again I know there is such a in an app in the market but it requires internet connection which is dumb, what if I'm in the subway reading and don't have reception.
Another feature I have come to love is the reader feature where it removes all the ads and everything from the main page and just has the words. I love this feature when I read long Wikipedia articles and stuff and once again it has the define for words I don't know also the feature where you can save it for future reading is awesome.
Most of you probably by now think I'm a nerd as i read alot but i just love reading, its like tv in your head of course doesnt beat the real thbfing but its fun to read. ANYWAYS There are tons of feature in-between I would like on the android but for now I'll leave to you guys to contribute what feature you want from apple to android, even the smallest lamest feature you might think. Sometimes the feature we want is already there but just not good enough which I totally get but anyways lets start contributing people.

Safari browser, its the best mobile browser by a long mile!
I don't have an iphone but I do want to say that as an android user I really couldn't care less what the stock apps are. There is almost nothing on my note that I haven't replaced with something that I liked better.
If you haven't found an application you liked though, that's another issue.
You realize iBooks is Apple's attempt to copy the kindle app: dictionary, black and white contrast screen, and whispersync.
I like Apple products too--but for the record--Apple didn't invent the mp3 player, the smart phone, or the e book reader.

Safari lacks auto fit paragraph to the width of the screen for pinch and zoom function.
This is one of the deal breakers for me when considering Android vs iphone. Others such as non-3rd party keyboard and small screen.

Hey, you're not the only one who loves reading here. I do, too. Other than this phone, I also have a Desire HD and a Sensation XE (DHD is my first Android) and I prefer my main phones with big screen real estate, mainly because I read e-books on them. I have to admit that I still like the traditional books--- nothing like the smell and the texture of a new book and feeling it on your hands but I've come to know the advantages of e-books over paper books, mainly portability. With e-books and your phone, you can read anywhere and anything you like from your app's shelf without breaking your shoulder bones from all the carrying around of thick, heavy hardcovers. And there are many times of the day when I have nothing to do which could be better spent reading--- like waiting in line or during commercials if I'm watching TV. Besides, e-book copies are usually cheaper than real books so if I like something, I can go off and purchase it electronically and then if I find myself liking it, that's when I purchase the real thing.

Time for some intervention to get this thread back on its rails!
I think the one thing that iOS has that android needs is buttery smoothness. iOS has beautiful screen rotation animations, and hardly ever stutters when scrolling. Admittedly, the smooth scrolling has to do with how apple has true multi touch, while androids is emulated, but that has to do with how apple is a money grabbing pissfart corporation that thinks that they can patent everything and inhibit technological progression. But that is for a different thread.
/rant.
I also enjoy how iOS applications tend to look nice and more professional. 90% of Android apps look like they were designed for use with Windows 97. Nasty fluorescent colors, jagged edges, all around child like. Apple has to approve their apps before publishing which is good because the end user profits in that situation.
One last thing android needs is a good keyboard. Apples keyboard has special key prediction techniques that predict what keys will be pressed next and then makes that key's sensor area larger so that it is easier to press it. Also, when you long press text in iOS, you get a magnifying glass that makes it easier to fine tune text selection. I've only ever seen this in devices running sense UI. This needs to be universal.
(About the screen auto rotate animations, ice cream sandwich does a good job implementing it, its just that it still isn't as smooth, and ICS isn't readily available to most android phones without having to root, and even then, a lot of things are broken in ICS roms.

Completely agree, the same issue on my previous Nokia phone. When I download apps it just looks so bugle because some apps look professional, some look pixelated, somenjust blank at times. In apple they are proffesional weather they are free apps or paid apps, they are all slick
Another thing I hope is in ics is emoticons, not talking about the original android faces. I'm talking the emoji ones from apple, I love those and some of it are funny, putting an emoticon on a text message like have a good day or good night just cheers people up (I have noticed).

But, yes, it's a great OS. I have one, got my mom one who didn't want an iphone. It's great. But yes, the lack of customization is a downside, especially if coming from android. I think some themes in the way of background pictures or a lwp would be great, awesome for the people who have alot of tiles and therefore spend some time scrolling through the home screen. It's very intuitive with very little options, which like iOS, is why it's intuitive. Big reason I don't recommend android to people not able to pick up tech and "know" how to use it. It was a much needed change to save microsoft's mobile market. Too bad, I don't see it selling much. Walk into the store and the idiotic sales people will point you straight to an iPhone or Android device and sway you away from looking at the WP7. Then there is the "flashy" aspect. Walk in the store and ignore everyone and your eyes will be drawn to the cool factor of iOS and Android. Just my 2 cents and take it for what it's worth.
smooth and stable. I think, it lacks a few apps but there are alternatives.

Love apple fanboys having their little rages if anything bad is said about iPhone, or their messiah Steve Jobs (who, I'm sure some apple fanboys believe will rise from the dead.)
Not shocking one bit. Most of my coworkers have iphone and whenever they're at my desk, they always play with my phone for minutes on ends and would forget why they're there for. I, on the other hand, could care less about a toy phone that predates 2008.
Got my first "smartphone" in 2010. I had the option of SGS1 vs iPhone 3GS and I went with the iPhone 3GS. Probably one of the worst decision of my life, if not THE worst decision. Told my sister to get the SGS1 when her contract expires in a months time and swapped phones right away.
I'd say that for first time users who are not computer savvy at all (and to some extent a bit lazy) will like the iPhone, everything is there for you and iTunes is pretty much a one stop shop for anything/everything. No tinkering required at all except a few email setup/account syncs. Basically, a boring phone. The only thing you can really "develop" is an app.
Android on the other hand is a pandora's box. The amount of open source developing, customisation, tweaks, themes, roms is just amazing. You can pretty much mix and match different options from ROMS/Themes and have your phone the way you want it.
Unless the next few versions of iPhone have 3D Holographic tech, strippers/lap dance included, unlimited free drinks at any bar in the world, a batmobile and 10% of its shares, it will be inferior to the Android any day.
Muhahahaha
It's funny how you introduced yourself there in the thread. Lol.

So someone's waiting for the iphone 5. More 'advance tech' like expandable memory, bigger-than-3.5 inch screen and removable battery. Lol
And oh, i almost forgot, even funnier Siri.
“Wait for iphone 5,,, the solution for your problem....... Bigger screen, advance tech and nice features..........“

You don't mean advanced tech, like the super advanced SD card so you?
My sister's partner had an iPhone, with a pin, he passed away and no one knows the pin, the only way to make it usable is a factory reset, which will wipe all data, as we all know, including pics, music etc.
Or even the even more advanced tech like a fail safe if you forget your pin, similar to how android allows you to sign into your google account if your pin is entered incorrectly.
They will get a minor hardware upgrade. Bigger screen maybe, just maybe, a quad core processor and definitely a new version of ios. Too bad ios will still stuck, you will still have to enslave yourself to the iTunes store, you still won't be able to pull the battery and insert a fresh spare when it's flat, and you'll have to wait until after android owns you again before you have to pay thru the nose again for another minor hardware update.

Ordered my 32GB S3 from Sprint today so should be getting it by Friday at the latest. I've been dying to have it in my hands after being around so many friends who own an iPhone and being able to flaunt it in their faces. However, with the iPhone 5 just around the corner, I'm a little worried that I won't be able to make them as envious as us Android users have been able to do for quite some time now. We've had bigger screens, turn-by-turn GPS, more powerful phones, etc. but as Samsung's new CEO said the future of smartphones will be primarily about the software on it and it's a lot easier to show off a bigger, beautiful screen to an iSheep than to try and explain to them software advantages.
lol at this thread... nice to be in some educated company for a change instead of putting up with apple fanboy drivel. Isheep LMFAO

For this, I have thanked you. Funniest quote of the day.
I laugh at Apple fanboys tbh. The amount of things I can do with Android without altering it is endless; while with altering the possibilities are endless. As for their iPhone; they need to Jailbreak it to even change slight things.
Apple goes for innovation, and new ideas.. But these "new ideas" are not new, and is always at least one year old by the time they release their phone.

Plus, we have all seen the ios 6 video. The features suck. There is no new ones. Nothing interesting. I used to be a bit brainwashed by apple when I did a bit of development for my touch, but I don't think I'll even buy one of those now. Even all my friends who think apple is the best are seeing my beast sgs and saying "damn why don't I have one of those?"
The tables are turning, sorry apple, were gonna win >. PS: you lose!
