My DIY - Using Defy original retail box. Cutting, folding, align and done.
Magnet at the back(near USB port) is use to trigger the Cardock and HomeDock based on its polarity. Never use strong magnet as it will damaged your Defy. Some custom rom might not working if your cardock.apk or homedock.apk has been removed, depending on your running firmware or custom rom.
This is simple, easy and free.
Mine running rooted Gingerbread 2.3.3 with original motoblur home screen, it worked nicely.
A few pictures to show it on the dock.
I will upload my DIY video to youtube with same title "My Defy CarDock and HomeDock - DIY"
Edit: Here's the youtube I made. Watch HERE
You do not need a magnet to get those dock formats. The car dock comes with a short cut and you can make one for the desk dock.

Yep, it's true... but it would be awesome if you put in a dock and it transformed automatically and goes back to default screen when you take it away.
Besides, I put these shortcuts hidden too.
in your video, when you turn your device into landscape... theres an "effect" ? never seen before on mine... got miui rom ... only in stock roms or is this a motoblur thing? (im german... so im sorry when my english isnt the best )
What effect do you mean? Or the animation of the screen auto rotate? This animation is available from setting - display. Not sure your rom have it or not. Try set your animation to 'all' and see.
Your english is ok..

I have this cut off too. But I went on to use the Defy original box to design and cut myself. I made two of them to have both CarDock and MediaDock individually.
Man, that's really cool! But what for is the home dock? You still don't have any connection with pc, no charging... I know it's awesome and it's very sufficient argument cause it looks so damn great, but does it give you anything?
BTW: I have even better dock: my laptop has so big speakers that when I put my defy on it (under numeric block) it turns to homedock

The HomeDock is for you to see the clock, play your favourite music or have your picture in slideshow. Even if the phone goes to sleep(under clock mode), just press the volume and it goes back to HomeDock. This HomeDock is like your bedside clock.. So from now on you can throw away your conventional bedside clock and have Defy sleep beside you...
All right... I'm going to see if I can make one out of Legos. Will report back.

Hi
i am searching hi and lo for the pinouts of the usb port and still cannot find the secret behind the cardock.
where did u get the datasheet for this?
It's not from the usb pinouts... it uses magnet to trigger the Defy into CarDock or MediaDock depending on the polarity of the magnet placed at the back of the Defy.

Yes, by a magnet. Try put a magnet near around the usb port. Never use powerful magnet or your phone might damage.. Still depend on which custom rom you're using as some custom rom has the cardock.apk and mediadock.apk removed.
Check the youtube video I attach from the first post above..

Defy comes with internal magnet acting as a switch locate near the usb port. It would triggered the cardock or the mediadock when there is enough magnetic field present. Try play around yourself and see..

The magnet in the car dock has a different polarity from the magnet in the home dock thus causing the different docking apps to activate. But, unless you removed the app shortcuts you don't need a magnet. I use mine in either format w/o any magnets.
this idea is weird... so compass cant works in car dock...
but in fact an electronic compass in a car should be placed at a neutral electromagnetics place to work...
Car alternator generates powerfull magnetics fields
ive checked in kernel sources and there are two modes North and South docks

Seems like a decent price, even though the device could use a better screen, bluetooth, and hdmi out. I grabbed a rain check while I think about a possible new toy...
Saw this on Engadget yesterday. The thing doesn't do portrait mode, doesn't have an accelerometer, and almost all signs point to the touch screen being resistive rather than capacitive. Still, for $150 I could slap some velcro on the back and on my cabinets and use it to follow recipes when cooking.

Huh. I spoke with tech support yesterday and they said it didn't support portrait. But we were also talking about the lack of an accelerometer so they might have just meant it didn't automatically flip.
Well I talked to them again today, and I dont get the warm and fuzzy feeling about the answers, but here is what "Ari" had to say:
Ari: unit has options for a prtrait and mode
Ari: headphone jack should be 3.5mm
Ari: unit has a camera
Ari: it has a usb slot for file transfers
Ari: 800mgz for prcessors
Ari: it should be able to charge with the usb also
Ari: it should have a calibrate command also
Ari: and program similar for the android market
Ari: it is using an android 2.1 program
Ari: i apologize this is just a new device and not all program alternatives and specifications has not fully been established

They're just reselling the hardware I'm guessing. No way a Florida company could make this cheaper than China can.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
mistakes happen. how do people forget to take thier vitamins in the morning? how do people forget there coffee mug on the roof of thier car?

Well, that's good to hear. Really all I'd ever want one for is reading in bed, surfing the web while on the couch and most importantly, following recipes online without having to print them. Velcro that thing to the cabinet and we're golden.
Can you post some pics of the device from different angles? I'm curious how thick it is and where the ports are.
Seems my local store has a few in stock here, so I'm swinging by on my way home to grab one. Ill report back what I can about the device later tonight or tomorrow morning. Supposed firmware update released tomorrow.

1) there is a thread about someone mounting a Nook Color in his car. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975419&highlight=car

Damn smooth.
About your charging troubles: If you have the stock cable, you can charge at full tilt if you don't connect the data (2 center) pins to anything. Most of the cig lighter chargers have the pullups for iPhones which the NC doesn't like. So get a USB extension cord, lop off the plug end, and connect the red and black to a 2A 5V supply and leave the green and white wires unconnected.
Wow, that's really sick. Nice job.

The AudioControl Three.1 if your not familiar with is essentially a line driver with a few bonus features. I used it merely to drive the head phone line into a solid line voltage for the amps. It give's me front/rear/sub and up 13 volt pre's. Crossovers and minor EQ as well. All I did is took a bass knob that I had laying around from an old polk amp and soldered on it's volume pot' to the volume pot' circuit of the three.1. That way I didn't need to mess with the Nooks volume setting ever (no access to the volume buttons).

I totally agree! I love having my Nook in my hands. It was hard, but I bought the thing for this purpose. I've gone through every crappy cruz tablet and archos looking for something that would work for this build. But I am not a huge fan of the docking stuff in the car, typically looks tackie. I plan on just buying another Nook when I have a few extra bucks.
Hi
Has anyone seen an official Car dock for the Razr i ?
I found a Razr M dock on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehi..._11?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1350308561&sr=1-11
It should be fully compatible with the Razr i, but not shipped outside US.
I Hope Motorola will sell the same here for our Razr i. I own a Defy + the official car dock and love the quality of it. Will buy a Motorola one for the Razr i without any hesitation
I answer to myself.
For those who are interested by a good car mount, the Razr M official fit 100% with Razr i.. as expected.
I ordered one on Ebay, got it today.
Can be used even with a case (3 sizes: without case, with a fine one, or with a large one)
Only thing that bother me: no car dock detection. SmartAction or Tasker doesn't detects the dock. Maybe it's not activate on this early rom we have, as Motorola doesn't sell on official dock for the Razr i.
Now I use a Tasker profil launched by a shortcut, but I wait for some NFC tag I ordered to do this
Motorola has said it won't be making a car dock (but I suspected that M one would work). Whyever not? The RAZR i is shipping in many markets and Intel is keen to promote it. It has fairly good distribution too.
It's as odd as Asus/Google deciding not to release the dock for the Nexus 7; a tablet selling by the truck load and winning awards left, right and centre - with new life thanks to more storage and 3G variants!
Sometimes I do wonder about the sanity of those in charge!

Oh yeah... 100% with you...
I don't get what your problem is, if the Razr M dock fits perfectly, why don't you just get this one?
A possible Razr I dock would be just the same anyway.
They're not exactly freely available here (UK) though and how many will Motorola sell, given the official UK line is there is no dock for the phone?
I bet loads of people will import one at great cost and fear no support if they have problems (Moto UK saying it's not designed to work with it).
The RAZR i is Motorola's best chance all year of getting back into the game and the lack of accessories seems rather dumb to me.
The Razr M car dock is available on ebay and ships worldwide.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-MOTOR...ccessories&hash=item257664e30d#ht_5310wt_1271
It's quite expensive though..
I might try that but I am sure most wouldn't. If it failed, would Motorola UK/EMEA honour the warranty?

When you dock the phone it should be detected, and be able to launch car mode (with smart action, or tasker).
With a razr m it's working, I asked on the razr m section... Not with the I.
So what think about this: maybe it's just a software issue, Motorola hasn't activate the sensor on the I
But, maybe there's no sensor on the I and it would never work as it should.
But there's a workaround by using nfc
Just sad to see there's some decision made that are out of sens: why not selling a car dock for the I when there's one 100% identical for the m?
I use Smart Actions to trigger vehicle mode when it connects to my car kit.
You can do this, but there's a flaw
Smart action will only bring up car app, but not set "car mode" on.
Explanation : when car mode is ON, when you hit the home button you go to the car app. If car mode is not "on", home button act as normal and bring you on the default launcher.. With is not very practical when you drive.
And for me, blutooth is off until I'm docked, I launche the bt, gps, etc while docking the phone.
Yesterday I receive my nfc tag... It's working pretty well with Tasker. (nfc use less battery than bt always on)
Yes that is an issue. I have a few Sony Smart tags so I'll set one of those up instead.
I am sure it will be a simple software issue, but Moto obviously decided early on it wasn't going to make accessories.
Given Google's input (stripping away almost all Moto apps, Webtop, HDMI out) and Google's lack of accessories for the Nexus 7 (I wonder if this will also be the case for the Nexus 4 and 10?) I wonder if there's a theme here?
Brodit
as a long time Brodit (www.brodit.se) user I wondered what to do using their mount in my car.
Actually I used their universal holder part 511230 which fits nicely. Only issue was the USB port was covered on the side so I used my multitool..... see attached pics.
Regards,
KalleH

Well, I asked them about it but they did not say they would do one....at least this is good enough "for the interim" for me......

Yep
Smartaction has a trigger for car dock, since beginning.
But at this time it doesn't detect the dock.
But there was an update of smartaction recently (via Play store), maybe did they add the support... I'll try it asap.
Motorola support say to me, delete the cardock app cache and test again. Test is fail

I had asked them if they'd be creating a holder for the RAZR i/M shortly after the RAZR i came out, and they stated there were no plans to. Alas, one of the main blocking issues for me for picking up one of these (along with the lack of custom ROM progress.. )
Hello!
I have found a workaround for the Car-Dock app launcher.
Install Car dock home v3 from playStore
Install this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18557944&postcount=6
Try docking your Razr I in the Car-Dock. It should ask you wich app you want to use. select the Motorola App. And it should start as soon you put your phone into the dock.
Made a video how i tested it. Actually I don't own the dock, but i will get it in a couple of days. There is a magnet in my laptop as you see. Thats how it also worked with my old Milestone 2.

Hi ive just bought a mini bluetooth keyboard from ebay. Its a great little device it has a full querty keyboard and a touchpad its made by ipazzport I think but its similar to the rii one.
My problem is its range is terrible it says it will work upto 33ft/10m but mine only works 1ft away from my phone any further like if I lean back in my chair and it becomes unusable.
Could it be faulty? Or maybe a flat battery? Or interference with wifi? Or maybe a setting im missing
I hoped there might be someone with knowledge on these mini bluetooth keyboards who might beable to shed some light.
My plan was to use it with an hdmi cable but I cant as it is. Im gonna leave it on charge all night and ive contacted the seller already about a refund but its a shame as it would be perfect if it worked properly.
Any info appreciated

Do you have a laptop or something else you can test the keyboard with? If it has the same problem with another device then it's probably a faulty keyboard.

Hi guys,
Which one of those have you got? Is it Rii Mini N7? Could you please provide a link to buy? I am interested in getting one as well.. I have a diNovo Edge which I love but I hate to have to pair-unpair it with multiple devices we have at home.. These look like good htpc (n7100.. hehe) companions..
Do you use yours also with your pc? How does it perform?
I have the Rii mini.
I originally bought it to use with the Note 1.
It works, but I found the office apps on Android not all that conducive to the type of editing I mainly do (using track changes and adding comments). So, I don't do as much editing as I expected I would.
I now just use it with my laptop.
It has replaced my Targus presenter a it has the laser pointer, and I can control power point press.
But the cursor keys and keyboard mean I can also use it to navigate pdf files on the projector and do simple text entry whilst standing up away from the laptop.
I use a lot of pdfs in my classes and type and draw over the top of them to fill in answers, highlight things, underline, circle etc. . It's great for that.
I wouldn't want to use it to type a whole paragraph.

I also teach and was thinking that this could be something that I'd use both at home and in class. Laser pointer is a plus too. Though I like the other model which also serves as a learning remote; it does not have a pointer. I think I'll get one with a pointer...
Still.. there are different varieties.. one that has the touchpad in the center of the keyboard, one that looks rectangular with touchpad on the right.. and another one that has the touchpad on the right and the lower right corner rounded.
I wonder if there is a difference in quality as well as the shape..
I have the one with the touch pad on the right and the lower right corner rounded.
The model # is RT-MWK02 it might have some more characters, but the text on the sticker is faded.
The touch pad is OK, but it's difficult to do any delicate movements. I can put the cursor into a text entry box on a web page, for example. But, it's a little fiddly. I find it easier to use the cursor keys to navigate around most of the time.

Are u all using your bluetooth keyboards with a tiny usb bluetooth receiver thats usually included with them or just through the in built bluetooth pairing? when i tested mine it paired up without the need of the tiny usb receiver so i didnt use it but it didnt work well im thinking now perhaps i should have used the included receiver and an otg cable.

My Rii mini works fine with the inbuilt BT receiver in my Note 2, Note 1 and laptop. I've never even used the included BT dongle to know if it works

Has anyone ever managed to get one of these to work?
I bought one years ago and tried to get it to work with a very clunky old phone - no luck. I've since lost it somewhere, but am wondering if it might be useful to make up for the lack of ir blaster
Anyone have any experience with these things?

This is correct link
Sorry about that - thanks for the correction!
Try using zazaremote: open app, configure a remote, there will be a message at the top of the screen saying there's to IR hardware detected - AT THAT POINT you plug in your 3.5mm IR and it should ask you if that's an IR you plugged, say yes... adjust the audio volume to 100% and try it.
Also you need to rotate some of them otherwise there is no contact, this is done so you can keep it plugged into your phone and still have audio through speakers / BT as if it's unplugged...
Please try that I'm waiting to hear if it works for you!

Hope it does. I'm pretty sure I will have lost the one I bought a couple of years back, but I'll have a dig about in my box of phone bits and will report back if I have anything to tell you
Edit:
I was surprised to find it fairly easily. Doesn't seem to work based on a quick check, but I'll fiddle with it and let you know if I have a breakthrough
Actually, these won't work (right)
They will but maybe with complete darkness lol
The trick is to have max volume but you really need an amplifier inbetween your audio jack and this product to have any significant range, I made one myself with a ln386 chip, one end plugs into the USB port and the other end to the audio jack, what it does it turn a led on/off through an app that's basically a soundboard with IR codes

Lumme! Sounds a lot more involved than I'd hoped. Think I'll stick to using the remote control!
Haven't had any luck using a similar product... Looking at the LED through another phone camera it doesn't appear to light up when pressing any function....
There is USB-C adapters
I use this one and it works very well and far away

Ooh! For real? That looks handy. Shame it blocks the USBC port, but I might need to throw a bit of change at one of those

It's attacked in my wallet.
I don't let it USBC since I don't use it all the time.
When I need it, I take from wallet.

Yeah, I guess it's only very small. Very neat
Now, if you can track down something so continent which can give my F1 NFC, I'll be really impressed!

Hey Adriano-A3, my USBC IR doodad arrived in the post. There's a qr code in the instruction slip - all text in Chinese. Unfortunately the qr code references a website that's down. I've tried a few apps from Play but can't get any to drive it. Can you recommend an app?

I was playing with that last evening. I think the issue may be that neither our TV not our set top box are well supported. I tried setting up a new profile but it just kept screwing up.
I'll persevere when time allows
Thanks for getting back

U can buy Mi band 4 which supports NFC
Apparently the functionality is limited to some Chinese transit systems and such like - not available or particularly useful outside China so far as I've understood
I was going to buy this

Will this work?
