[Q] Increasing in call volume? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, how do I do this? (is it possible). I'm currently on serendipity 7 and I love the rom. Problem I have is the same prob I have with all GB roms, and most I9000 roms, (I'm an I897), call quality. Through trial and error I have found that jl2 and jl3 modems offer the best quality for myself and the people I am speaking with, however I would really like to increase the volume in my earpiece. It's ok, but it's a lot lower than any kb1 I've used. I have the volume all the way up, and sometimes it's a struggle to hear the person I am speaking with. I have sgs tools and I've investigated in the volume controls of the audio section. Problem is there are so many options for tweaking and I don't want to just go in and start increasing numbers that I don't know what they're for. Any guidance on which numbers I should increase to hopefully solve this issue? Also, galaxy tuner gives me issues, mostly just not working, so I don't think this is an option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I searched this before posting, and didn't find what I was looking for.

There's a Serendipity sticky in this forum for exactly these kinds of ROM-specific questions. Please use them. <---Smiley to avoid being characterized as a "****" again.

Not calling you a ****, but if you read my post, my question isn't rom specific. It's referring to all GB roms and I9000 roms in my experience. Can anyone else help?

In-call volume is a known Cappy problem that is fixed in many of the custom ROMs available here. Some do a better job than others, but it is a ROM-specific issue.

I say try a rom that is based on kb1 the official froyo build. The kb1 kernel had the proper drivers fire the audience chip used in the captivate. The I9000 uses a different chip so all I9000 roms will not have the use of the audience chip for noise cancellation.
Roms like cognition and fusion might be worth a shot.

Thanks studacris. I actually am running cog 4 on my other cappy, I just love using my gb cappy more. Just hoping there was a way to get same/similar call volume as my cog phone. So is tweaks with sgs tools useless with the gb/I9000 roms? Are you the captivate creator? You know everything bout this phone! Lol!
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App

Lol. I have no idea about the sgs tools tweaks, I get about 1 call a week never really looked into it myself.
I don't blame you for wanting gb it's pretty sweet, I haven't gone to froyo since I made the jump. If you want audience chip support and gingerbread goodness keep an eye on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125596

This should be in the sticky, thread closed.

Comparison of Different HSUPA i9000 Modems in Captivate

Hi everyone -
I'd like to know the difference between each HSUPA i9000 modem that has been tested in the Captivate
I think it would be good to know what the strengths are, when / where it first emerged, and known issues with it.
If you post below I can keep this updated.
I'll start:
JG8 - i9000 Eclair ROM. Works for enabling 850 band for those launching a reorientated kernel. Do not use with Froyo.
JPP - i9000 Froyo ROM.
General principles:
- don't mix an i9000 modem with a cappy kernel or visa versa
Known issues with using an i9000 modem:
-bluetooth voice quality
-wired headsets don't work on mic
thanks all!
bump, i was just gonna ask the same question
The problem with asking questions like this in the Q&A section is that all the developers that can answer it well hang out in the Android development section and never come over here
And people wonder why there is so much spam in that thread.
C'mon guys, help me out, and lets prove that we don't have to start technical question threads in Android development in order to get an answer.

Can some1 tell me which taste batter? Orange or lemon?
Try it yourself znd u will know!
yeah real helpful. is there any difference in frequency support? can bluetooth work corectly along side hsupa yet?
which is the most recent? jg8, jpp, jpm? does one need to be installed before the other? are there any other known problems? battery drain? instability? ect?
someone must know

Haha funny! I thought of doing that myself but the problem with n=1 is that all you guys would get spammed with my own quirks. Hence why I didn't add the point about JG8 FC'ing on me under JG8- most people haven't said that - so I just have a weird bug with my location/hardware/who knows what. I'd kinda be spreading disinformation if I put it down as "truth"
Anyways, anything that anyone wants to contribute I'd be more than happy to include. I think it would be helpful. THanks.

I had issues with JG8 FC'ing. Obviously not the case for everyone but in my circumstance I'm looking to try an alternative.

Do any custom ROMs support the Audience chip?

Disclaimer: I am still running stock 2.1. Still in "look before you leap" aka "educate thyself" mode on here. Read read read...
Anyhow, one thing I've searched for and not really seen talked about much is the the fact that the Captivate, unlike other Galaxy S models, has a unique voice-processing chip... the A1026... dubbed the "Audience" chip:
http://www.audience.com/about/1026.php
Most of the popular ROMs these days (aside from Cognition, which seems to have stopped development in-favor of Perception, which is also I9000-based) are I9000-based, and the I9000 didn't have the Audience chip. Combine this with continued mention of sound-quality issues with the mic (such as this video review of Perception 10) and I have to wonder if they're related.
I searched for threads about Audience and hardly found anything (beyond mention that since the chip wasn't used, the processing ends up having to be done by the modem), nor did I see any mention of it in any of the ROM-specific threads. So I created this thread to ask: Do any of the ROMs specifically add in support for this unique part of the Captivate's hardware, or are we sacrificing that and totally missing out on it? If it's not being used, is there no way to incorporate this back in? So much progress has been made merging other Captivate-specific things back into the I9000 ROMs (most-recently, haptic feedback on the Home button) that I hope this can be done sometime.
Thoughts?
I honestly don't know. It doesn't seem like it is a high priority.
I just wanted to comment on the lack of development on Cognition... I don't think DG has favored it over Perception, I just think there isn't much more that can be done with it until the Captivate finally gets an official gingerbread.

Cognition 3.04 has the "Noise Suppression" option, but I do not know whether it is hardware or software-based. At one point the thread said it was software-based, and now the thread makes no mention of it at all.
I've personally just decided to go and hack apart the stock Rogers 2.2 ROM to my liking, because my girlfriend complains she can't hear me due to background noise every time she calls me on seemingly any ROM.

Evidence seems to indicate that you must run a Captivate ROM, kernel, and modem in order for the Audience noise cancellation to work correctly. It probably is not necessary to use a Captivate modem, but there are other incompatibilities that will cause problems if you do not use both kernel and modem from the same source (Captivate or i9000). The audience chip requires drivers that are in the kernel and ROM support in the phone application to enable noise cancellation.
It appears that the Google Nexus One also uses an Audience chip, so I posed the question in another thread asking if it can be back-ported (since the source and binary drivers are all available for the GN1).
I have been wondering the same thing about the A1026 chip. From reading some of DesignGear's comments in other threads he says that the Rogers Captivate does not have the A1026 chip which means that Cognition 3.04 is not using it. Then the next question is does the Armani Captivate or the Chinese Captivate have the A1026 chip?
+1 to the Armani captivate question. Would Andromeda possibly have this? Personally I have been asked if I switched phones by callers when I flashed Andromeda. They say it sounds a lot clearer. Not louder, but clearer. huh.

I don't believe it does. It doesn't have the option in the settings menu, anyway.
Ok I have Cog 3.4 and it does have Noise suppression and i have tested it by calling someone from a noisy location and then turned it off and called them back and they said the could tell a big difference with it turned off. So from my testing it works fine.

I can corroborate edog45 findings. I just wanted to let you guys know that the noise suppression option in the Cognition 3.04 ROM definitely makes an impact on call quality with my SGH-i897. I don't know if its hardware or software based but with back to back calls with my wife she noticed much lower background noise with the option on. I am running a pure Cognition 3.04, no different kernels or modems.
I have an AT&T captivate and the option can be found under call settings---Voice call.

Bingo. While this setting appears in other phones, it is unclear whether this is referring to enabling of the A1026 Audience chip, or whether it's some sort of software-based audio processing.
Considering we have the source for the A1026 Captivate driver, I don't get why it can't be incorporated into the I9000 ROMs built from source...

Yeah, as far as anyone has been able to tell there isn't source code for the drivers, though there are references to the Audience chip in the Rogers 2.2 source.
Either way, I heard no discernible difference with it on or off with a Rogers phone, so I think it's either hardware-enabled or it does nothing.
Noise suppression with JJ4 modem
I just flashed Cognition 3.04 and flashed the JJ4 modem. (signal strength appears to be better, but data speeds crawled)
I made VM recordings with noise suppression option off and on, while playing music and TV sound on.
Off: Voice was clear, I could hear some noise from the music playing, but it was not a distraction to hearing my voice.
On: Voice was intelligible, but sounded muffled with some hiss/interference. The noise from the music and TV was close to being completely cancelled.
Sidenote: Here is the link to Audience's website that shows which devices have the processor:
http://www.audience.com/about/enabled-products.php
So I have to ask again. I jabr Cognition 3.04. Where do I find this Boise suppression option?

[Q] Which ROM/modem? AT&T, GPS, HSUPA

I haven't flashed a new ROM in awhile and really don't want to have to go through every ROM/modem combination to find one that works for my needs. I know plenty of folks here go through almost every ROM that is available so I'm hoping to pick your brains.
1) I'm NOT asking "what is the best ROM". I <3 -all- of the ROM authors and don't wish to start that kind of mess.
2) I'm willing to try a couple of combinations to see.
3) My Cappy is brand new (I just exchanged my old one under warranty since I was one of those in the original batch that got the lovely random shutdown issue even with 2.1-update1) ... not sure if that is going to matter or not but I've read a lot of posts that seem to make it clear that different Cappy batches behave better with different ROMs.
So ... what I'm primarily looking for:
* I'm on AT&T so I need 850
* I would REALLY like to get improved GPS performance ... I don't want to buy a standalone GPS (wife has one, I'll use it when I have to) ... right now even with the GPS tweaks like Skyhook I'm just not getting acceptable lock times and it loves to break lock.
* HSUPA ... I'd like to enable HSUPA. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with a new 3G tower and small population, which means I know there is more bandwidth available so I might as well use it. Especially since on occasion I need to tether.
* I don't want to lose noise cancellation
* I would like a ROM with good battery performance
Otherwise I'm not concerned with new features ... besides the issues above I do fine with the 2.1 ROM (not saying I don't want 2.2, just saying I don't care whether the custom ROM includes custom launchers, themes, etc). I would -like- working Bluetooth + HSUPA but my version of "working Bluetooth" doesn't care about voice dialing.
PS. I've read a number of threads on ROMs and modems ... but my brain hit information overload once I started trying to match up both. I probably could have settled on a single ROM -or- modem, but trying to get them to mesh well just didn't compute.
Everyone has different experiences with different roms. I know it's a cliche but it's true. I've had pretty much no gps in a rom that boasts about gps. Best to try each rom and see if you like any.

Personally I love my combo of darky's 9.1 with suckerpunch oc/uv kernel and the tjl3 modem. The only way to have noise cancellation is to stay with 2.1. From what I understand, att is the only one to have included the noise cancellation chip and since we do not yet have an official Att 2.2 source we can not take advantage of the chip.
Not sure on this one, but doesn't i9000 based roms have the bt static issue? And is the i9000 roms the only ones that let you have hsupa? Sorry a lot of information is on this site and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Just know that you have to pay attention to what ROM you're using. If you're running a I9000 rom, you have to use a I9000 modem.

Captivate vs I9000 Based Roms

What's the difference between ROMs that are based on the Captivate such as Cognition vs ROMs that are based on i9000 such as Perception? They both function more or less the same according to my usage.

One of the main diff is that Captivate based roms are 2.2 as where i9000 roms are based on 2.2.1. Some give you more options then others as I hear only certin things are available with 2.2.1.
Usually the i9000 roms are faster, and also allow do HSUPA.

Yeah, I can't connect to my work email using the 2.2 email, 2.2.1 email works fine however.
yes interesting i have cong 4 was wounding same thing still a bit fuzzy
Captivate better for me
I've found my phone works smoother with a captivate based rom.
Cognition is all captivate and things seem to work better
less force closes and unresponsive touch screen issues on my 1007 revision captivate, as well as dramatically less dropped calls
I lose HSUPA, but I'd rather have stability.
Cognition 3.04 with the stock rogers modem and with DA_G's gps fix also gives me pretty impressive gps performance on my captivate
I already paid for touchdown so exchange isn't an issue for me.
HSUPA comes with the modem, not the ROM. Just flash the correct HSUPA modem and you're good to go.
For a normal user perspective, so basically there's little to no change. What about bluetooth? I need that for driving and atm, Cognition + Firebird/Speedmod does not support bluetooth calling.
bump on the bluetooth question and of course on any other things you noticed
Ok, a couple points here:
1) I recently flashed a Captivate-based ROM for the first time in months, after flashing every i9000 reorient out there a dozen times. WOW. What the heck was I doing? At stock clock speeds (with a custom existz kb1 kernel and voodoo fs), the speed and smoothness and snappiness and sound quality and battery life of my device completely blows all i9000 ROMs I used out of the water. Maybe it's just my individual results, but it seems to me that there are still, despite all the much-appreciated hard work of kernel devs and ROM chefs, a ton of problems with how i9000 hardware works on the i897. It's great that I could get better dl/ul speedtest results on the HSUPA, or better Quad/Linpacks with OC, but in practicality, the process of downloading and installing an app on kb1 without OC is still WAY faster. The only ROM that compares is CM7. I'm not anyone's Director of Development, but I'd urge the devs here to focus on i897-based code and binaries whenever possible.
2) When I was using Cappy ROMs before, I know I had to use Bluetooth Launch and set it to the Voice Search VoiceRecognition Activity, thus enabling all Google Voice Actions including dialing over bluetooth. Today I'm going to play around and see if I can still get that working or perhaps tie it to the Voice Dialer app instead.

noticible differences between 2.3.4 and 2.3.3?

So, I'm not sure exactly, but I would think that 2.3.4 would iron out a lot of the bugs that 2.3.3 had.
Is that so? or is it a minor upgrade?
Regards
Smith
That is what the consensus around the forum suggests; 2.3.4 is much more stable and smoother.

I have tried 3 of the i9000 gingerbread roms that were made for our captivate and did notice the going from a i9000 2.3.3 to a 2.3.4 did make a difference in overall quality and just seemed better. I now have switched from the i9000 gingerbread 2.3.4 to the new kf1 gingerbread made for our cappy and I have to say I am impressed, it seems as smooth as the i9000 2.3.4 and now just needs some small tweaks to get cwm working and then some themes made for it. But right now it works pretty damn well right out of the box with AWESOME call quality. And the 3g is okay since that is all we can get with the kf1 modem on the stock kernel but it doesn't seems to be too bad as compared to the better speed of hsupa+
Another note is that flashing it right now via DGs 1click gingerbread is VERY EASY.
Another note though for you either way is that no matter what you are using Odin and flashing bootloaders (i9000 with its gingerbread bootloaders and the newest captivate flashes it own set of bootloaders that keep the same stock button controls for recovery and download modes). There are many more options as of right now as far as themes for the i9000 gingerbread roms. Good Luck

That was probably one of the best replies on this site. No smart comments, just facts. We need more people helping like that.

That's a crock. Lots of people help out like that. The problem is many more just blow through the door, start posting (often with crappy titles that inhibit the search function for others) without doing a search or even a scan of the Sticky titles and expect to get personalized service from what is basically a bunch of good people volunteering their time and expertise for free. That was very nice of Rock Ratt, but he's hardly unique in here. If people came in and exhibited even a slight amount of consideration for the forum instead of only caring about themselves (how many threads on 3e verification do we need?), this forum would run a lot smoother and members like me would have a lot less to say about it. Press the thanks button when appropriate and don't be afraid to donate to those who supply the bits and pieces that make our phones work better.
