So, I'm not sure exactly, but I would think that 2.3.4 would iron out a lot of the bugs that 2.3.3 had.
Is that so? or is it a minor upgrade?
Regards
Smith
That is what the consensus around the forum suggests; 2.3.4 is much more stable and smoother.

Ok thank you. Now, the debate:
-Choose a ROM based off ATT GB
or
-Choose a 2.3.4 ROM...
Probably both at some point or another lol

I have tried 3 of the i9000 gingerbread roms that were made for our captivate and did notice the going from a i9000 2.3.3 to a 2.3.4 did make a difference in overall quality and just seemed better. I now have switched from the i9000 gingerbread 2.3.4 to the new kf1 gingerbread made for our cappy and I have to say I am impressed, it seems as smooth as the i9000 2.3.4 and now just needs some small tweaks to get cwm working and then some themes made for it. But right now it works pretty damn well right out of the box with AWESOME call quality. And the 3g is okay since that is all we can get with the kf1 modem on the stock kernel but it doesn't seems to be too bad as compared to the better speed of hsupa+
Another note is that flashing it right now via DGs 1click gingerbread is VERY EASY.
Another note though for you either way is that no matter what you are using Odin and flashing bootloaders (i9000 with its gingerbread bootloaders and the newest captivate flashes it own set of bootloaders that keep the same stock button controls for recovery and download modes). There are many more options as of right now as far as themes for the i9000 gingerbread roms. Good Luck

That's a crock. Lots of people help out like that. The problem is many more just blow through the door, start posting (often with crappy titles that inhibit the search function for others) without doing a search or even a scan of the Sticky titles and expect to get personalized service from what is basically a bunch of good people volunteering their time and expertise for free. That was very nice of Rock Ratt, but he's hardly unique in here. If people came in and exhibited even a slight amount of consideration for the forum instead of only caring about themselves (how many threads on 3e verification do we need?), this forum would run a lot smoother and members like me would have a lot less to say about it. Press the thanks button when appropriate and don't be afraid to donate to those who supply the bits and pieces that make our phones work better.

Porting I9000 roms onto the Vibrant isnt as easy and clear cut as it seems. Thats why Eugenes first 2.2 port was full of bugs
waiting..... i am very excited for this rom
The captivate has this rom too

Its really pointless porting a 2.2.1 rom at this point. First, its honestly not much faster. Second, we're really close to have an official 2.2, maybe even gingerbread. We'll more than likely have gingerbread before anyone actually ports a fully working, bug free 2.2.1 rom based off i9000 code. You might get a VERY minor speed increase, but of course with the trade off of having tons of bugs. Not worth it in my opinion. Speed AND stability is the way to go. Not speed and bugs.

Exactly, and the only reason I brought Ragnarok to the point I did was because I had already started it. I did, however, learn a lot in the process. And I finally figured out how to fix the dang gps - even so, it is nowhere near a daily driver - more a curiosity.
This is true, if we have a ported 2.3 there is no point of having a 2.2.1
But I had in my i9000 a 2.2 ROM version and when switched to the one of Darky (2.2.1) I could see a real change in speed. (I had before Voodoo). Anyone could notice the snappiness of the phone!
It is pity, the devices have so small differences in hardware and it is so difficult to port ROMs. If you notice the Galaxy S forum is full of custom ROMs and mods, plenty of them. Aditionally long time ago there was unofficial and then official FroYo...
Waiting....The only reason I got the Vibrant is the AWS ... (and it still needs a mod for the FFC)

Yeah, I had the same curiosity 2 weeks ago. I had 2.2.1 running on my phone. For the most part it ran fine, but would randomly get tossed into a bootloop. And when I say randomly, it was extremely random. There would be times my phone would run for hours, other times it would bootloop an hour after boot, 20 minutes after boot, or immediately after boot. lol.

If you read the ragnarok thread there is a possibility that the boot loops are triggered by signal strength. Still, it would require capping the strength to stop it.
Ok so I am understanding (sorry still learning the lingo here and there), The I9000 2.2.1 is not that great but the 2.3 Gingerbread from the NS is possible to be ported to the Vibrant right?
If so then sombionix, may I suggest you dont bother your precious time with all these leaked releases (JL_x's) and only work on the 2.3 NS port. I have used a few of your roms and they are sweet, I can only imagine what it will be like with all the JIT patches in 2.3!
have tried just about every custom out there with the exception of insanity and darkys roms.

I apologize if i am in error. I didn't realize there was any problem asking for specific feedback or recommendations on a particular rom or roms.
According to the forum rules what is wrong with my post?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=263#td_post_81
If i am in error please delete thread.
Just look through both Dev threads. That will give you lots of information on what people like about each one. And if you have flashed about everything under the sun flash both because chances are you will eventually.
I was just pointing out that these kinds of threads have been getting closed left and right the past few days. ROM recommendations are really very subjective. No one knows what your requirements are and how a ROM will fit them. What works for one will not necessarily work for all others. And the ROM Dev forum is really a better place to be looking.
I will add that anything i9000 based like Darky's has plusses and minuses. The plus is that you get great HSUPA speed. The downside is you get the EU flavor and features that don't work. Spelling of some things is EU, options for FFC are there but don't work.
There are many other details.... I just hope for the Captivate source/official release soon so we can get a true captivate 2.2 kernel and tools to build from.
Assonance all the way.

1. I was asking for feedback most specifically from people who has used both roms. This wasn't a Whats the best rom ever thread.
2. The developer thread definitely would not have been a place to post this and in my extensive use of the forum and reading and re-reading of the rules i fail to see how this post violates them. So again if i am mistaken...my apologies to all and i beg on the mercy of a mod to just delete the thread. So Darky's rom ported over to the Captivate as seen in this thread switches what exactly to make it Captivate-specific...just the modem, kernel and a few GPS-related modifications?

On topic... I've been looking to start venturing into custom ROM's on my Cappy, but I am tempted to wait and see if Cyanogen ever devs their 6 or 7 for Captivate now that they are dev'ing for Nexus S...
I have used pretty much every ROM out there, even the ones that do not make it to the Captivate forum and so far Darkys is my usual go to ROM.
For some reason, when selecting the Gallery images, it is the only one that does not lag before going to the zoom in and out window.
I am not using Lag fixes btw with any 2.2.1 rom.

As for froyo or gb I think its obvious that gb wins the race by far being superior to its dying predecessor.Allthough I've tried only 2 gb roms both were great,I just happend to like Mosaic rom theams better. Both Continuum and Mosaic are very stable and smooth, jvh and jvo fixed lota previous jvb issues and the kernels are making great progress as well,in fact talon and xcal's latest could be called final editions.Gb is getting a even newer update 2.3.4 were froyo will be left in the dust i'm guessing(only cog is being updated nicely)Gps doesnt need no fix on gb outa box ,it locks and tracks great vs froyos cpl roms still strugle.Looks I think are you to decide which u like better, read through the themes section of roms and c for yourself.I was afraid as well be4 the switch but I'm glad I went for gb.
I'm actually suprised this thread has lasted this long without being closed. This debate has gone on NUMEROUS times and there are several threads on it. I'd suggest you search and see which one you think is better/safer.
I was browsing the forum and saw a few questions for stock 2.3.3, so here's a Q&A for the stock 2.3.3 Rom.
Remember no question is a bad question.
NO flaming, namecalling...
Remember to include Kernal and modem in your problem description

Odin will replace the I9000 bootloaders with the new captivate ones, which can be incompatible with I9000 roms. And I9000 bootloaders can be incompatible with captivate based roms.
I believe Heimdall will work without flashing bootloaders.
a guide on how to flash
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-3-gingerbread-firmware-on-samsung-captivate/
Will add more links later.
Some answered questions.
Can I flash a Froyo rom when I'm on Gingerbread?
Yes. Just remember to flash the kernal and rom at one time. Also make sure there is no bootloaders in the package.
Why does my screen turn black during a call?
It's a bug with gingerbread, place your finger on the proximity sensor and remove it to get a screen.
Can i flash Gingerbread from...
Yes
Why should I be worried about flashing gingerbread?
You shouldn't, the talk of bootloaders might make you anxious but just with any other rom you need to make sure that the files are in the right place and your USB cable stays in.
Reserve post to organize it better.
There is no "Stock Gingerbread" for the Cappy until AT$T/Samsung release it. What we have now are developed GB ROMS based on a released code base, but they are not stock for the Captivate. This thread title is confusing.
So I asked a question in another thread that I searched and hoped would be the appropriate place but the thread was closed with no explanation or direction??
So I did some more searching and I found this one next and ask a more simplistic question first.
I do not have a custom ROM so which thread would be appropriate to ask a question for a stock ROM? (I know technically 2.3.3 is not stock yet)
Why is there not a sticky thread for stock ROMs? i.e... Eclair Q&A, Froyo Q&A, Gingerbread Q&A
(p.s. the sub-forum specific search function is not working so I have to search through the entire forum for answers)
I looked in that other thread and I know atomic fusion is based on kf1.

I've got a quick question and I hope this is the right place for it...
I was using Continuum for a long time and like it very much; I tried the CM7 when it first came up in the beta and it definitely seemed to compromise usability for the sake of having 2.3. Is there any benefit to going 2.3 right now, are the ROMs stable??

CM7 is pretty darn stable now also, specially if you use the rc1, it is VERY SMOOTH and pretty flawless, has great speed to, upload/download speeds are great, Everything works good now but some things may not be as good as other Samsung roms like battery life, but I have a spare battery and it is my daily driver. Cog5b3 is VERY stable, it is the leaked 2.3.3 MADE for our phones, it has GREAT sound quality using the phone but does not have the higher download/upload speeds (though they do not seem too bad), it is my backup phone and JUST WORKS GOOD. I have tried Continuum 2.3.3? and Apex 7.x and both are pretty stable but I would get some lag after a few days/week unless I was clearing cache and dalviche cache often, they are based off the i9000 roms so you will have better download/upload speeds but they don't use the audience chip. Either way they all perform better than froyo roms IMHO.

Just to update a few of your things. Continuum is now based on JVQ (2.3.4) in v6.1. Apex is up to JVQ also in v8.1. eXistZ has his Talon kernel up to 0.4.1 with voodoo sound and color. I have heard that some saw lag, but that has all but been eliminated (in continuum and apex, at least).
I'm a new user here (yes...I read all the faqs) but I'm still not fully aware of the ROMS available and their respective benefits. Didn't really see any threads that helped me in the captivate section.
What I'm looking for most is excellent battery life and signal (if that's possible). I tried Cognition and it seemed alright for a bit but then my signal became spotty and battery worse (not sure if it was the ROM or my phone).
If it helps: I'm on stock froyo (on Rogers).
I'm not really interested in a multitude of features that may overload my phone, I'm a minimalist.
You could always try flashing a different modem if you're having issues with signal.

I've found Continuum 6.1 to be the best operating gingerbread ROM for my phone. This after experimenting with pretty much every other ROM out there. Battery life has been good.
I'm a moderate user. Mostly sms and music. I get 2 full days out of a charge when running the music app 2 hours per day and sending 20 or so texts.
This is purely anecdotal. My wife's phone got poor battery life out of the same ROM. Just going to have to try one at a time until you find one that works well for your phone.
Good luck.
Are you looking for a ROM based off gingerbread or froyo?
I would recommend a froyo based rom for stability, serendipity 6.4 treated me pretty well when i first started and now i'm on fasty 2.3 which is pretty good too.
If you live in the northeast USA then i would suggest JW2 or JV5 for modems.
(See this link for modem options and good discussion on the topic, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 Ignore the poll, its out of date.)
If you want to try out the tasty goodness of gingerbread then i suggest trying serendipity 7 or the leaked "stock" 2.3 ROM thats been out for a month now.
Keep in mind that you are more likely to find bugs and random problems with gingerbread ROMs since most (all?) of the current ones are not based off of the i897 captivate ROM but the i9000 instead.

You're going to get a multitude of suggestions being that everyone has their own favorite. What works for some may not work for others. I personally have found that I can get healthy battery life out of most any rom I flash using an OC/UV app. Usage and location has a lot do with it as well. Your best bet will probably be to try different things and explore on your own til you find what works for you. Luckily there are tons of people in these forums who are eager to help and lend advice. I certainly wouldn't have learned as much as I have without them.

For a froyo based ROM ill easily agree serendipity is the way to go
And look into the onix kernel
For a gingerbread ROM try either continuum or apex, but avoid the betas just use the stable releases
And look into the talon kernel
Both kernels I recommended are by the same dev and are capable of overclocking (which you don't seem too interested in) and undervolting (this will help with battery life)
If you want to overclock stick with 1.2 ghz, anything higher is usually unstable but you could get lucky, 1.2 is safe though.
For undervolting read around for the guides to oc/UV. Make sure you have a way to wipe your voltage settings if you mess them up (should be built into onix's recovery, and its definitely in talons recovery)
No matter if you choose froyo or gingerbread and whether you use any of my suggestions above, look into the gingerbread bootloaders (try to avoid the i9000 ones, even though they work on the cappy they weren't made for us) I don't know if there are rogers bootloaders for gingerbread but I know the att ones work great and you can probably change the logo later.
The gb bootloaders are obviously required for gingerbread roms, but will work with froyo roms as well, so you may as well grab them now.
As for signal read into modem flashing, make sure you get cwm2 flashable modems for cwm2 recoveries (like onix) and cwm3 flashable modems for cwm3 recoveries (like talon)
Your best bet here is trial and error
Jk4 seems to be a good fallback modem for functionality (no frequency dancing issues which can cause roaming or no signal) but I'm not a fan of its signal strength in general or battery life, personally I like kc1 and zsjpg depending on what region I'm in.
Anyway I hope this info helps
Try them out for yourself. We can give you what, works for us but might not work for you. A search would have told you this. Thread closed.
