I'm certainly hoping for help, but also to serve as a warning...
I pulled a noob move and tried to install the Gingerbread 2.3.3 update. I was using Odin3 1.7 and everything SEEMED to go correctly. When I got to the point where I was supposed to wipe the cache and reset data, I got error messages saying "unable to mount /ext filesystem. Bizarre.
At any rate, I tried to flash back to both DJ30 and EA24. My Sprint Galaxy Tab is a brick now. I can still get into the download screen, so hopefully all is not lost. I've tried Odin 1.3, 1.7 and (I think) 1.83. I also found an EA24 flasher on one of the XDA forums but always get "Cannot open binary file!" It appears that it's looking for the .tar file to be in a specific location. I've tried c:\ c:\Program Files c:\Program Files (x86) -- nothing works.
If I had to make a guess (and again, noob move) I don't know how to completely wipe the partition clean and repartion, flash EA24, etc.
I've seen tons of commentary on non-Sprint Galaxy Tabs. Can anyone help with a US Sprint Galaxy Tab?
There is another EA24 flasher for Odin from the same thread as the "can't open binary" version. It worked for me... I wasn't bricked but had lost my camera function.
Failed...
This didn't work. I get the attached error.
Can you tell me which directory you installed this to, and, if you had any command-line arguments?
I got that same error that's why I used the Odin version I linked in my previous post. Download the zip file, read the text file instructions on how to flash the image and you should be good to go.
I did that...
I did that. It fails.
It gets to the "recovery.bin" file, and then fails. Give me a minute and I'll post a reply with the screen shot...
When I use ODIN3 1.7
This is what I get when I use Odin... It simply fails...
Hmm, I'm too much of a noob to know why it would fail.
Maybe you could post in the thread with the flasher and for more input.
I would but.. That post is now "suspended." The guy who wrote it has a Xoom now and couldn't care less about the Sprint Tab. Just my luck, right?
The thread is still open. You might be thinking of another thread.
I think you're right. I'm thinking of the Zypher thread.
At any rate, regardless of whatever firmware I try to flash, it either fails outright, or, it hangs at the Samsung Logo. *Nothing* seems to be working.
Defeated...
I have agreed to send in my Sprint Galaxy Tab.
I have failed.
XDA has failed.
Just sayin'.
Use the gui version of heimdall. Just launch heimdall, then put your tab in download mode and plug it into your pc. Once plugged in, launch the heimdall driver.exe and go to one of the drop down menus and click list all devices. You should see a gadget serial appear. Select it and force install the driver. Then load your pit file and every other file you can in the fields. You need to find the original stock package (usually a .tar or .md5), then extract the .rfs and and .bins in their correct location. And click start. For some reason cdma devices seem harder to flash than GSM. If after it runs, it still doesnt work, reload all the files again except the pit, boot.bin, sbl.bin. I had the same mounting error flashing a verizon fascinate, and i battled with it for a solid day and a half. If you can get into download mode then you are golden.
Dont give up.
For some reason i dont think odin like CDMA. It always fails me everytime.
If you download a .tar.md5 file, just rename it .tar and extract the contents. You need to google and download a .tar archieve utility (there are tons of free ones).

I have a Sprint CDMA Tab and Odin worked for me. I've also Heimdall with success. It seems results may vary depending on what combination of stuff is on the Tab.
Heimdall
I'm trying these now per your advice. They at least finish and I don't get the write errors when flashing using Heimdall. So far, the best that happens is I get to the Samsung Logo screen, and nothing -- no glowing blue, no startup sounds.
Interestingly enough, all of the Zypher stuff that was posted before (without modem, with Epic modem, etc) -- None of those ROMs had boot.bin or sbl.bin in them. So, it looks like all the DJ30 stuff I have can't really flash back to DJ30, correct?
If I repartitioned, wouldn't that stuff get blown away and need to be put back?
All failed...
I was able to get Heimdall up and running and seemed to successfully complete with multiple ROMs (DJ30, EA24, and the Gingerbread ROM floating around.) None successfully boot the Tab, however. I get to the Samsung screen, no glowing blue...
I definitely did a number on this! hahah. Oh well. Live and learn, I suppose.
I got my Galaxy back from Samsung... only took about 10 days but! I'm back in business! Woot!

Hello - It seems as though everyone is somewhat nice and knowledgeable on this board. I'm hoping that no one flogs me in the process of this thread.
I have a T-based Galaxy Tab and am trying to load a new ROM onto it. I've tried multiple times with multiple different ROMs but am not making really any progress. When I plug in the device to a wall outlet, the attached screen is displayed. This is the first time that I've seen this screen and I'm now hoping that this thing isn't bricked. Please help me bring this Tab back from the dark side.
I need to know which ROM to use and the appropriate PIT file. I also need to just understand how I get the device to be recognized by Odin again as it's not being recognized in it's current state. Thanks to all that will help me.
Jim
hi,
can you tell me which firmware files are you using to flash and the PIT files?
Yes. I used the below files. I know it's the European version but it looked as though it was for TMobile. And I'm somewhat desperate to get this fixed.
PIT - P1_EUR.pit
PDA - P1000BOJJ2-REV03-ALL-CL618963.tar
MODEM - MODEM_P1000XXJID.tar
CSC - GT-P1000-CSC-DTMJJ4.tar
Downloaded them from samfirmware.com/samsungtablets.htm

i guess the issue is due to the incompatible firmware and a different partitioning file (PIT)
may be you can try installing JHA firmware with repartition, PIT file and then install JID directly without repartition and PIT
Not wanting to be pessimistic here but after browsing the Galaxy S section I came across a thread with that image on your tab. You may have to contact Samsung and have the device replaced. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S_Series#Recovery_Mode
Storm, Chow,
I think you may be right. I followed the instructions that Chow gave me and it failed. See attached. I still have the Tab attached to my pc and it still has the same image as original. I've attached my Odin screen so you guys can look at it and tell me if I'm doing anything wrong.
Jim
Hi,
I had that image many times, whenever my tab fails to install any new firmware.
did you reboot the tab after seeing that image
one more try:
after seeing the flash fail > hold the three button combination (power + volume down + home) for long time (may be more than 1 minute) until the tab is switched off and then use three button combination (power + volume down + home) to enter the download mode (you will still see the above image only). now connect the tab to odin and try flashing it.
if i remember correctly, my tab was connected to COM 8 when flashing but i think its USB port selection
this is how i recover my tab to working mode whenever a flash fails
Have you tried with Odin 1.31 with PIT 816 and JHA.tar selecting repartition? In the pic you are using the 1.71, right? I had something similar going back to JID from JJ4 and when I tried with the 1.31 it passed, cant be sure it wasnt just 'the one more try' or the old Odin but it worked.
Good luck

I used the Odin 1.3 per your instructions and used th 816 PIT with the JHA tar. This passed as you can see from the attached. This has worked and I now have a working unit that needs to charge up. I'm a little nervous to now install the JID firmware and will likely just try to keep what I've got working. If I do want to install the JID firmware...will I need another PIT file or can I just use the JID firmware and write over? In addition, would i need to select or unselect the re-partition check box.
Thank you guys so much. It appears as though my unit is working.

I quote.
I had that bad image on the screen for some time... If you connect to the PC you should find the TAB as connected in ODIN. If you flash JHA repartioning with the correct PIT, that for me was 9 and something if I remember, you should restore normal functionality. Try and let me know!
Can confirm.
Had this image several times while testing var firmwares.
Simply connect tab to odin and flash jha image with repartition.
This should fix it.

MODEM file
Greetings,
Where did you guys get your MODEM file from? I only can see the PDA and CSC files on the samfirmwares.com site... :S
It's a Sprint Galaxy Tab.
I went to the sticky in the dev forum on how to unbrick. Ran Odin and the stock software, it goes through successfully but when I boot it will have the Sprint splash screen and then just goes to a Samsung screen and never comes off of it.
When I go to the Recovery screen, I get this message:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(No such file or directory)
E: Can't mount CACHE:log/recovery.log
E: Can't open CACHE:log/recovery.log
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(No such file or directory)
it also repeats this when I try to do a wipe on it.
I've tried putting an update.zip on the SD card and it will go about 1/4 of the way before going to the screen with the exclamation point and the Android guy.
I've tried using the EA24 flasher. When I click the Start Download button to start the software update I get an error that says "Unable to open binary file!"
any other ideas on where to go from here?
Sounds like you just need to do a factory reset / wipe in recovery (I saw the same errors and did the same when I flashed the Sprint Gingerbread ROM to my Verizon Tab). That worked for me, I'll bet it works for you too.
EDIT: Hmm, sorry I missed that you said you wiped already?
I used Heimdall to flash kernel + factoryfs.rfs in my case, that alone should be enough to be up and running I would think.
update.zip method is *very* fussy, all files are hash checked, needs stock recovery and stock kernel etc., that did work for me one time, but as I say, it's very fussy. I'd think a stock rooted ROM (like here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161033) may be best. Worth a shot anyway.
yep, did the wipe and it pulled that message.
Tried SuperOneClick to see if I could get anywhere but no luck. Was looking through the sticky about trying to root it and run a different ROM to see if that may help but it looks like I need a working unit to do that to get into some of the settings like USB debugging and what not.
I am going to try the heimdall thing next. Hopefully I can get somewhere with that because I'm running out of options. Appreciate the info!
Make sure you use your shipped stock rom... It maybe you have locked bootloaders and it won't allow you to upgrade without unlocking 1st...
Not sure about the CDMA gtabs though as I use a GSM tab, though reflashing the supplied rom seems to fix most things...
One thing to remember if you get errors in cwm is to go to advanced, then reboot recovery. I have gotten errors just like yours and that fixed them. Also a stock heimdall will fix you. Since we don't mess around with bootloaders on the sgt you gonna be hard pressed to brick you tab. Let me know if this helps.
Personally I've given up on cwm until I see some more progress. Heimdall works well and the stock rooted gb is great for me. I've gotten into a pinch quite a few times lately and come through even gotten the phone...!...pc screen freaked me out esp when I wasn't getting odin to pick the tab up. Let me know if you need some help!

Hi everyone,
this is my first post and believe me i took every measure before deciding to post, i searched, googled and searched some more but nothing helps.
Here is my problem, i'm on a At&T Galaxy S i897 i recently downloaded the ODIN software with a i897 500mhz .tar file to root my phone, i successfully got the phone to connect on a PC and loaded the .tar on the PDA area and clicked root.
ODIN ran the process until the zImage part and now my phone is stuck after removing it from the usb cable after 20 mins had passed.
My phone now shows an icon of a telephone and a computer monitor with an exclamation point in between them, it won't go out of that screen.
I am able to get my phone into download mode and have tried to run a stock 2.2 rom but nothing works, it stays at zImage.
Now i've read a couple of things that seem to be hit or miss but i don't know what to try, only thing i've read is using another usb cable which i will buy tomorrow to see if that works but knowing my luck it won't.
I don't have Kies installed but do have the samsung drivers installed so Kies is not the issue, no firewall or antivirus on the PC.
Can anyone please help me out, i just want my phone to work and hopefully root it.
Thanks to all.
The kernel u flashed was just to get Root and that is all (I'm just guessing). Since u can get into download mode just flash back the kernel that u had running before and u should still have Root. Or use an Odin/Heimdall One Click to get to a Stock Firmware (See the Stickied Thread in the Development Forum).
Give more info about what u flashed and what android platform/version u are/were on, etc. The more info, the easier it is to give the more accurate help to ya. Thx.

Hi,
well i have stock android 2.2, i used speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz .tar.
I've tried using others but none work, Odin always gets stuck at some point and i have to unplug.
I never got to root it gave me the soft brick when i unplugged.
Heimdall One click won't work, i'm on a mac and it won't work there, phone not recognized, on my pc i have xp and it won't let me run the one click even if i run as admin.
So i'm stuck, really stuck.
Should i go get a new cable?
Check out the "Connection Issues..." Stickied Thread by jmtheiss in the General Forum and also the "Guide..." by TRusselo that is Stickied in the Q&A Forum.

If you plug your phone in while Odin is running and you get the yellow connection symbol you can re flash any kernel. like 4-2ndtwin said, search the STIKIED threads and find the stock 2.2 kernel and loads it into odin and re flash it.
when you get that little phone exclamation point and PC icon and no booting, but you can still get odin to turn yellow when you plug your phone in you can almost always re flash.
good luck, hope it works out.
I've been in the same situation before.
The problem is that ODIN freezes always at some point of the flash, it recognizes the phone but always freezes, i have done everything right and follow all the guides, there's something just not right about this, it shouldn't freeze all the time
Try Heimdall (not one click).

Well i'm on a windows 7 PC now and still can't get it to unbrick, i tried using odin again and stuck on zImage.
One click gives me a exe file called one click loader when i runt it it asks to install heimdall i say yes and it throws this error: Problem while executing heimdall.exe in shell.sendShellCommand
I just want to flash i guess and get my phone back, it goes into download mode with no problem and it just shows the phone and pc icons but it wont start so i know its soft bricked. Can anyone help me fix it please, i've done just about every method i can find and nothing works.
You are doing something wrong with Heimdall. Go to Apex ROM website, get Heimdall, get Apex tar, get latest Java 6 JRE, run Heimdall as "java -jar Heimdall.jar".
When pompted point to Apex.tar - flash with booloaders.
Edit:
Found this page on the site:
http://apexromcaptivate.weebly.com/installation-instructions1.html
Is that it?
Also how do i run Heimdall as java -jar Heimdall.jar?
It asks me to: flash to stock JF6 but how do i do that?
Problem fixed, it was the cable.
Hi everybody,
I've been at this for a couple days now, trying every solution I can come across, but nothing seems to work. My mom's Captivate decided the other day that encryption had failed (I don't think anyone ever told it to encrypt itself...). It said all I had to do was click the Reset button, but that didn't work. So back to ODIN I went.
Unfortunately, though I could swear I've used ODIN on this phone before (it was running CM10, and I'm pretty sure I messed up a couple times trying to get it on there), I can't get it to work again. I've tried the One-Click ODIN (which is what I would have used before), as well as downloading two different tar.md5s from sammobile.com and flashing them with a different ODIN.
After using the One-Click method, the phone powers on to the AT&T screen, and then it powers off, switching between different charging icons if it's plugged in. The other ODIN flashes got me to Installing packages.. after boot, but then it gave me rfs errors. So I figured I needed to flash a new PIT, but that didn't seem to help. Doesn't One-Click do that anyway?
I've tried two different USB cables and two computers (both Windows 7 SP1, one doesn't even have any antivirus program on it yet), but no luck. I had a different computer the last time I would have used ODIN on this phone. I believe this phone is a 1007 build, assuming I am looking at the right number under the battery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
see encryption unsuccessful thread. your internal storage is probably dead, but you can run from external sdcard with the fix described in the thread.

Yeah, that's the problem
Darn. Seems like that is the problem. Simply putting in an external SD card allowed me to boot, but now I have to get CWM on it through ODIN... Thanks.
CWM via ODIN?
Does anyone know how to install CWM through ODIN? I'm back with the stock recovery, and when I try to install a ZIP it fails the signature verification (for any ZIP I try). Seems that ODIN would be the way to go.
Stock recovery won't let ya flash zip files that r not signed by samsung.
Ya have to have the zImage in a .tar file in order to flash it through Odin.
Here is the KK4 Corn Kernel thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18233847
I recommend the version 7.0A for what u r wanting. There is a .tar version of it there. PDA slot is the one to use in Odin for flashin a kernel.

Running CornKernel, repartition error
OK, I'm up and running with CornKernel. I rooted it using the ZIP (and now the phone is unbelievably slow, but it's rooted nonetheless). (I also tried the advanced CWM option to root it, but that messes the phone up.) But when I try to repartition the SD card, it says "An error occured while partitioning your SD Card. Please see /tmp/recovery.log for more details." but /tmp is empty.
Getting rid of the phone
Meh, forget about it. I'm going to sell this phone as-is or part out anything I can. I need to move on, as spending more time on this phone when it's permanently damaged is not worth it to me. (If anyone wants it by chance, just let me know...) Thanks for pointing me to what the problem was though.
...necro bump... You wouldn't still happen to be selling that would ya?

Hello yall any help would be much appreciated.. Thanks in advance Lexi
I bought a Samsung galaxy tab 7 Verizon branded from someone at my university.
He said he had not idea what was wrong with it.
Symptoms on receipt: Booted through Samsung screen to Verizon screen then looped.
I did some research online and though I could fix it. So I bought it.
I was able to get in the mode with Power + up button screen.
Tried to wipe data, but alot of commands came out: E;/ Failed to mount. And other commands like that
I figured I needed to flash it.
After reading a bunch of posts I downloaded Hemidall and Odin, along with SCi800 Verizon stock .tar and Galaxytab.pit
My first attempt was with Odin, but computer went unresponsive.
After this happened I was no longer able to get to verizon screen. Just samsung and Download mode (power +down button)
I tried again. It just hang when it said writing. On the tablet there was a small blue progress bar but it didnt move for 20-30 mins. So I pulled it out again.
Also note: when I tried to download the USB dirvers as suggested on this forum through hemidal. It was not recognizing my tab.
I got the usb drivers from Samsung website
I know it was recognizing because when I did the Odin it popped up at Com 4 or something like that.
I took a break and put it on the charger to charge.
Now it does not even turn on by itself
It turns on when the power is plugged in from a wall socket but it goes to a all white screen.
I can get into download mode
But when I plug it in the computer USB nothing recognizes it. Not even Odin.
Question 1: what can I use or do for my compute to see my tablet again.
Question 2: If I get my computer to see my tablet again. Can someone show me how to flash from scratch? Meaning redoing partition too? I think that might be bad as well?
Any suggestion guys would be great.. I know a thing or two about computers but really need a bail out on this one.
THANKs
somehow the best platform to launch heimdall is linux.
It doesn't need drivers.
I never run heimdall in Windows. But I think its driver and Odin's are conflicting.
So you may have to uninstall the zadig USB driver and reinstall Samsung's driver to get it working with Odin.
Or get a clean windows machine that never has either software nor Kies in it.
Using XP is also better than Vista/Win7 rather than have to deal with 64 bit and permission control.
The PIT file is to repartition the device storage. So you are on the right track.
Good luck.

I let it charge for about 20 mins. and Now it is at least making the windows tone (the tone when you connect a usb device to it)
If I chose to USE Oden again and I want to start from scratch. Meaning fixing everything possible.. Similar to formatting my computer HD and reinstalling everything. Does that mean I have to redo my partition?
Or what else would I have to do?
I tried hemidal

Also in device manager it shows Samsung USB composite Device
This means its being seen by my computer right?
I would like to try oden again but I can't find another .tar file and .pit file for my Galaxy tab 7 Verizon

Woke up this morning and the tab is not connecting again. Very frustrating.
I am going to try to run it down again and go from there.
How long should the whole flash process take? I just want to confirm I have enough battery life in it.

ok so lets say its the partition formating problem.
I re-flashed it again using the same .tar file but this time I used a .pit file.
would that have attempted to format it?
Or do I have to use Nand erase all?

I have been having the same problem since may! One day my tablet would hang at the Samsung screen! I don't know how many hours I have researched and many different ways I have tried to install the firmware but still get the same thing. It hooks to Odin (every version) passes every install the Roms, the pit, the dbdata, but I still can't get it to work. I've tried on 3 different computers. I don't want to give up because I know it should be fixable. Everyone else seems to be able to fix theirs. I'm on Canada on the Rogers network and got the right files but can't seem to get it right!! Anyone have any other suggestions? I haven't tried to format the SD card and repartition it yet. Not really sure on how to go about that.

I thought it was fixed but when I got it back it was in the same condition I gave my cousin.
I did some more research since then. I found a forum about this same error.
As stated in previous posts the error I was getting. Where it said it could not mount the files.
As Priyana said it could either be the partition or the INTERNAL SD Card is bad.
I found a post about this same exact problem (as soon as I find it again I will post in this post)

Then remove the internal SD card
Then install the operating system (android) on the external SD card
FIXED
Today I decided to try to partition the external sd card after trying everything for over 2 months now. I only have an 8 gig card at home but I thought what the heck I would give it a try and it worked!! I partitioned it with 3 partitions by watching a video on youtube then i installed the factory roms and overcome kernel with Odin and it worked. I'm a happy camper now!
