So I am currently running Apex 7.0 Update 1 Rom and recently I have been having an issue with my home button. Basically every time I unlock my phone my home button sporadically keeps pressing it self for no reason, and the only way I am able to stop it is by hitting either the back button several times or the search button. It also happens randomly while I am using my phone to browse the internet or play music. I noticed that this also occurred while i was on Serendipity 7 so I do not think it is a ROM based issue. Has anyone encountered encountered the same issue? Is there a fix for it? Any help would be great Thanks.

This happened to mine while I still had the stock rom on it. AT&T took it back, no questions asked and replaced it. I would suggest going back to stock and calling AT&T. I assume you're still within your one-year window.
As a bonus, my GPS was horrible on my first handset, but my second was has been perfect since day one, no matter what rom I've been on.

(This isn't my idea - thanks to Studacris for this one)
Try putting your phone in a bag of rice for a while. If the button is freaking out, there's a chance it may have some moisture in the phone that's causing problems, and the rice will draw that moisture out.

Hey guys
I tried to search but I haven't found anyone with this particular problem:
Today I had to swap the SIM card on my dad's N1. I must have touched something the wrong way since after doing so, it seems the trackball is constantly being pressed (even though it's not).
Here's some of the consequences of this, that are making me literally freak out:
1. I can't get into recovery (as soon as I do, a click is registered on "Reboot phone).
2. It only boots in safe mode
3. Navigating around the phone is almost impossible, opening up the app drawer immediately launches an app.
By hitting a text input field, I can observe how it's registering clicks really fast (by observing how the whole text field is selected/deselected)
I tried fiddling a bit with the trackball, long pressing it, clicking it, etc, but it's still a no go (long pressing it does register as a long press, but as soon as I let go, the constant clicking continues)
Seeing as how this happens whether or not after the ROM has booted, it looks like this is a hardware problem.
Has anyone run into something like this before? Any ideas on how to fix this myself?
I don't know if sending it to HTC is an option because of two reasons:
1. I live in Costa Rica, don't know if there's HTC support here, or if it'd be safe shipping the phone to the states for a repair.
2. My dad's N1 is rooted, but bootloader hasn't been unlocked. It's running a custom rom. Right now I'm not sure if I can't get it back to stock since I can't even get into recovery.
Please help! Thanks
I had this exact problem for about a day or so it turns out I had got the trackball wet try clicking it and rolling it also try giving it a day or two it might just come back good luck on your nexus

Turns out you were right!
I left it sitting for a day, turned it on and the problem was still there. I got a hair dryer and used it on the phone for like a minute, turned it on, and all is good now!
Thanks!
Problem has come back and won't go away now... definitely looks like a hardware issue, will call HTC support.
I have been having this weird problem for over a month now.
Virtual Button gets stuck as if im touching it rapidly. it happens randomly too. for example, after a reboot i was using xda app. After hitting "back" button, its button backlight goes off and doesnt respond. Everything else still works but the button gets stuck like that for 20second.
Sometimes when im watching a movie without hording it, quick option pops up as if i have pressed the button next to home button.
anyone else with this issue???
I have 2.1 stock rom uptodate with kies, ryan lag fix, and realook screen protector on it.

This just started happening to me (literally 15 seconds ago) and I want to find out what's going on.
+1
same thing happens to me. But after pressing the central button, the buttons reappear. strange weird
I do not install any lagfix or change the rom, I have my Samsung Galaxy S as a wine factory
I just started to have exactly the same issue with my Vibrant.
Any follow up on this?
Well, one thing i wanna ask you guys is that how many apps do you have installed on your system? Im actually having less of this symptom these days as i have uninstalled dozens of software. Not sure if that was the issue tho.

I deleted few apps which I installed in last few days and so far so good....but its just few minutes of use yet!
Specifically deleted "Noled".
Still getting lag with BACK button. Though it happens once or twice a day....very weird!
I have been using Samsung Vibrant for 3 months now and this problem just started two days back.
I'm having problems with buttons going off by themselves now. Browsing the internet or writing a message, the menu pops up by itself; Its annoying and its starting to get worse. I'm starting to wonder if I should trade in my phone; this is my third phone.
// galaxy s
I too have this exact same issue with my i9000m. Stock rooted rom with voodoo lagfix. Uninstalled everything, factory reset, clear cache, unroot - nothing fixes it. I have a replacement phone on backorder that will be replaced no questions asked thankfully.
Sounds like it's a somewhat common problem.
now this is getting irritating! seems like an issue with only Bell version I9000M. Couldn't find this problem any where else on web.
did a hard reset and before loading any apps..... played around with phone and found the same lag with back button!
After looking at your replies, it seems like these two factors are causing this strange button lag:
+Bell Mobility
+2.1 Éclair
Can we confirm please? Are you all using Bell & 2.1 with the issue?
Hopely Froyo can fix this issue. My phone was alright for couple of weeks but it came back worse than ever!
I’m starting to hate Samsung more than ever for the lag of updates & lies.
it might be only with some phones
i'm on i9000m as well, 2.1 stock, but i do not have the button problem you guys are describing.

AllGamer, I think you're the lucky one when it comes to your Galaxy. I'm curious if this issue happens to phones running custom roms or the official froyo release.
On stock firmware i9000m and OCLF with root. Im getting a huge lag (10-15 seconds) whenever I hit my home button. Using launcher pro but the problem only popped up yesterday.
Checked watchdog and it only shows 4mb free BUT task manager shows 65mb free. Any thoughts?

You're not the only ones with the issue. Look at this guy using a Bell SGS on youtube (apologies if this is one of you guys )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBe0txXobwY
Also, its not just the Bell SGS, my AT&T Captivate does it on the Menu key and its very very annoying. Theres a similar thread in the captivate forum and no doubt, on in every SGS forum as they all use the same touch panel.
If its very common, which seems to be the case, could it be related to dust ingress into the touch panel?
Disabled Quickdesk (glcery handy app), left the office early, and now everything works great. Not sure which one worked....
I was getting a black screen for 5-10 seconds every time i pressed the home button. Anyone else with quickdesk issues? Suggestions?

I factory reset my phone and then un-rooted it just for the sake of testing out some ideas. It didn't help at all and the problem persisted for awhile until I found something interesting;
If you are having the buttons 'stick' or malfunction, go to recovery mode via 3-button. Once you are in there, start pressing your soft keys (I did this for 10 minutes straight when my buttons were sticking).
Tell me how your buttons respond, do they stick or not? We could determine if it's software or hardware.

I thought the buttons didnt respond in recover mode...
They light up and respond to touches; if you press the menu key it actually removes and restores the recovery screen.

Ok so I just encountered the strangest glitch ever on my phone. I was in my text messages and all of a sudden my phone kept vibrating and I noticed that the hone button led was flashing as if I was touching it but I wasn't so it takes me home. Has anyone encountered this before? Its happeneded to me once on my old captivate but not as often as on this refurbished running stock jh7

I had this happen once, with the first rom I flashed, but mine was the search button doing it. All I did was flashed to a new rom and I was fine.i may have been on cog when it happened, but not sure.I've been running fine on serendipity 4.3 though

In fact, I sent my old Cappy back in the mail today for this very reason! Did the warranty process. Mine did it ever since I got it(4 months or so). It was very intermittent. What made me finally have it replaced, was when I didn't wake up on time for work because as my alarm was going off, the home button was "pushed" and it silenced my alarms..... Can't have that happening.
Anyways, now I have a refurb and haven't had the problem in the 3 days that I have had it.
Good luck man, but my suggestion is, if you are still within warranty, get that sucker replaced!

Thanks, Yeah, i just encountered another strange issue, i plugged my phone in was transferring music, and unplugged (did the proper steps), it then told me that my internal storage was corrupted. rebooted and now its fine.
Its happening more often on this phone (the button glitches). Its kind of annoying me now. If it continues im going to have to call att again or go to a store and take it.

The home button thing happened to me - on my first replacement phone. I immediately got a replacement for the replacement. I highly recommend you do the same.
Happened to me too, got the phone replaced BC the captacive buttons went crazy and the phone was nearly unusable. I had zero issues having it replaced too, just go to an att repair center.

This is something I to an curious about it has been happening to me for a couple of weeks but it is the magnify glass search button. It will randomly click its self. I thought it might be a problem with my screen protector but even after changing it I am still experiencing the problem

I have the same problem when I am running stock firmware with the "Search" softkey. It's quite annoying. I guess I just gotta stick with Andromeda.
probably it is a rom issue. try another rom.
This started happening to me right after I flashed Perception 10.2 and Firebird 0.4 kernel. It never happened before that. It has persisted through all Firebird kernels since then.
I even caught it happening once on the "back" button, but only once. It happens on the Home button at least once a day, usually more than once.
Hey guys,
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but the back and menu buttons stop working suddenly. This has happened to me twice. A simple On and Off fixes this, but I wanna know if theres a proper fix for it? My phone is rooted with the stock ROM "KKA". Anyone else experienced this?
My phone is NOT rooted with the stock ROM "KKA" and suffers the same problem.
Mone rom is rocket v17 , i got the same problem 2nd time.AND screen didn't wake up.
I have had this issue once so far, rooted with official Arabic Rom. does anyone have a solution?
had to restart the phone to bring it back to normal.
Read on Androidnz blog that this happens sometimes using spen with button press for using menu features like pulling up menu or back button etc.
I'm rooted, standard ROM, rarely use the SPen (haven't got around to understanding what I can do with it). I've had the unresponsive Back and Menu button problems a few times - only solution I can find is to switch off and back on again.
Good to know that it's not just me, but it would be nice to find a solution.
Same issue. Stock rom. Happened to me just now and the stylus was not being used at all.
well i also have that problem. i also know others with this problem.in my case restarting the launcher helps.ofcourse if u have both home and back button not responding at the same time then its not possible.i get both of them not responding at the same time very very rare.at that time all i do is turn of the screen and wait a few minutes.thats all, every thing is normal again.oh one more thing i think its a good idea to keep more than one launcher installed and not making any of the default.it helps switch between them easier.switching between launcher always helps in these not respondig issues.
Hi guys I have been facing a problem ever since I got the device and do not know whether the issue is only with my device. The issue is that with all the roms the capacitive back button stops responding after a while and I have to turn off the screen and back on to get it to work for a while and again repeat the procedure. Is there a fix for this which I may have missed. I an using buttons saviour for now. Thanks.

My device always got that issue when I used my device heavily usage, especially when my device get hot/warm
Just screen off then on to reenable back button normally
I think main point in hardware device

I do have that camera issue you have sir, at rare times. Is it hardware failure in the works?
don't know mate. i have this time an again on most roms, previously i thought it was due to bad sdcard. But i am facing this from past 10 days or so. The phone killed one of my 16 Gb class 6 sd cards.
