Cant get past dum activation screen after flashing dreaimg.nbh and cupcake

i dont have a data plan now so i cant activate the phone and i cant use adb cause its not working on win7 for me..is there anyway i can just flash spl and radio and skip the recovery image? I tried someones sim but it just says error when i try to register.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.. or Confirm this is correct. but..
If you're on an official rom you're out of luck, but if you can update to an ADP rom no login will be required. It's not a SPL or radio issue, purely rom based.

What phone are you using on what network? Was the other person's sim card on the same network? did they have an android data plan?
ADP means Android Developer Phone.

Oh both sims were tmobile US, and the other phone was a moto zn5 so it wasnt a g1 plan.
So I'm *assuming* you're on a G1. You basically have three choices, either goto a t-mobile store and beg one of their techs to let ya use their data to register, find someone else with a g1+data and ask to use their sim card or go adp.
The downside of going with an adp rom is you'll loose the t-mobile branded stuff like tmo ringtones, the myfaves app, ?youtube? (not sure on this one, you should do some reading first or hope someone else chips in).
If you really need your phone now, and are able to install custom roms the adp version of donut can be found --here-- Note: I run the official roms so am not too well versed in ADP vs. AOSP+ADP but it looks like you may actually want the latter(AOSP+ADP)

can i rename the recovery image to update.zip the load it in recovery mode?
No, no renaming the recovery image.
Ok, so let me get this straight. You unrooted a rooted phone, to install the official cupcake so you could "one touch" root it which installs a custom recovery image @ the same time?
this is starting to hurt my head...

Gotcha, headaches gone but unfortunately it looks like your stuck. It appears this process *assumes* you have a data connection(for the login process) and without this most guides out there are going to be useless, especially at this point.
I'd say add data for a month or w/e then remove it if you must once done doing what you're doin... or go back to looking for someone with data that can help ya get logged in. Bout the only ways out I can forsee atm.. Wish I could be more help...

I was gonna get flex-pay at Tmo since i hate being tied down to contracts and it can have a g1 data plan added.
alright, cool. Ya, i just got it from someone else wiser than I that without data you've got a long road ahead of ya getting your phone back up n running.
You can always do it the old-fashioned way... Just downgrade to RC29, login with WiFi. Then do the root process that way. Only takes 15min at most.

There's a way to bypass it with rooted ROMs, of which RC29 is one. You can. There's a whole guide on how to do it.

Unable to root 2.1 ruu

Ok I took the plunge and tried the official 2.1 and now I want to root however I am having all kinds of problems. When using fresh kitchen I get:
Asroot push failed: * daemon not running. starting it now *
ADB server didn't ACK
* failed to start daemon *
error: cannot connect to daemon
When using the command prompt and entering adb shell I get:
* Daemon not running. Starting it now*
ADB server didn't ACK
*failed to start daemon
error: cannot connect to daemon
Checked netstat and nothing is running on 5037
I tried flashing the official 1.5 ruu with no luck either....
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks
any thoughts or suggestions.
If you ran the signed sprint one, you can't root. You didn't follow directions.
tell us which file you ran and maybe we can decide if this is even worth pursuing.
..... hummm did not see that in the dev forum. Can I roll back to 1.5 and root from there. I did use the official signed update :-/
Nope.
You're stuck until either someone roots 2.1 or you get another phone.

you didnt see in the forum that you cant reroot 2.1? or roll back to 1.5? i call bs, its all over this place.
You can't root the old way because it patched asroot2... You can't use the 1.5 RUU because the hboot doesn't take kindly to being downgraded... so, you're screwed until we root that.

I like to run head first into things....I don't learn lessons.
I'm new to Android. I had a Pre and was big into webOS for a while...well now I have a Hero. Saw the 2.1 leak and though "hey, I'll just grab that there RUU file...its got to be easy to root!" Why am I so awesome?!
This post is sarcastic but I assure you, I am this stupid. I hope someone roots this soon. I'm new to Android and I'm getting nowhere trying to figure it out on my own.
I would just wait for the EVO but I don't get my upgrade until September so its not really worth shucking out the bucks for a new one on 6/4...it'd be nice to have tethering and Skype and of-the-such on this here Hero.

Not the best idea to start shoving things into your phone if you have no idea what they are doing...especially if they are made for other devices.
On second thought, it might help justify a new Evo purchase if you brick your Hero.

So why is the leak rooted but the final was not? Aren't they the same?
If you had run the RUU from the leak you would be in the same boat.
It's easy to KEEP Root and install new update zip. ROOTING a phone with the RUU is a different matter.

So what droid does, is down grade the phone to a previous OS version. I am sure they are doing something special to get it to go back. They must have figured out how to sign the file or something.
To do this we would have to modify RUU to Load a 1.5 OS/Kernel on a 1.47(?) hboot. But also to do this, we have to be able to sign the files with a release key.
The whole reason that the 1.56 RUU doesn't work anymore is because of the HBoot version > than what it is trying to load.
I guess its POSSIBLE to get the 2.1 RUU to load a 1.5 OS, but I don't think we are able to sign the files like HTC does and the RUU will fail without that.

Neither the leak or the official was rooted. The files where extracted and root was patched, busy box was installed by a dev here.
There may have been a leak several weeks ago that still had root because ti was a test rom.
The WILL not include root in an official build...that is one reason why this community even exists.
There is an international beta of Skype for Android and Verizon has an app. I'm pretty sure there should be a way to make the app think you're using a Verizon phone so the app'll work. Same goes for the FiOS apps. Again I'm new to Android and haven't messed too much with the platform. I need to learn a bit more before I can really say this with confidence.

Help on root dmd64

have a g1 1.6 build dmd64, and since i doubt there will be any more ota updates for this phone i have decided to root. i have never rooted a phone b4 but i am pretty tech savvy, i have flashed firmware on a psp b4.. i have heard that the dmd64 build cannot be rooted traditional ways, i have heard that there is a special way to root this build. Is this true? And if there is a special where would i find best guide on how to accomplish the root on dmd64? Hi i have a DMD64...i installed universal Androot.apk and it will work out for you...google it
Make sure you check if you are actually rooted after rooting with Universal Androot. I used it to initially try and root my G1 with DMD64 and it said it worked but I didn't have root access. I wish I could remember what I actually used to finally get it done.. let me look through my bookmarks and see what I can find for you.

I just did this with CM6. If you need help let me know.
NOOOOOOOB
I hate posting and asking for help. I enjoy figuring things out for myself. G1 with dmd64. Apparently I have rooted using the ANDRoot method. Shooting for install of Cyanogenmod 6, but not married to that if someone has other suggestions.
Problem? For a long list of reasons I won't get into, I am stuck using a Mac 10.4.
Just makes all instructions I am following a little bit different. I have dreamimg'ed...Put the mod on my root, all kinds of things, even starting from scratch with factory resets etc...
While I haven't "bricked" I have yet to get any MOD working yet. Have started of thinking of "different" ways of doing things so that they will take hold...Yet have realized I am getting awfully close to bricking..
Does ANYONE know of procedure to use/put on MOD using a MAC? I know I'm a NOOB, but I doubt I'm the first...

I used the instructions at this wiki. When it comes to flashing the recovery, I had to look into the discussion section and use what one of the users posted to actually get telnet to flash the recovery to my phone. I did however manage to successfully flash my G1 with CM6.
Thank you. Good stuff. I guess my question in particular is...My phone IS rooted (checked with T emulator) but before I flash mod, do I still have to change the radio? Right now I'm listed at dmd64, do I have to goto one of the RC's or can I just flash? I have tried to change the radio but it always stops at the rainbow screen.

Personally, I did exactly what that guide I linked said. I'm not sure if you can just flash or if you have to downgrade. I do know, though, that downgrading is pretty simple and it doesn't take much time. As for the radio, I know that CM5 and CM6 (and I am assuming CM7 also) require DangerSPL. When you flash DangerSPL, the instructions also tell you which radio to flash, and to be careful because flashing the incorrect radio can brick your phone.

Please help me to root my HTC Hero today..

I would like to get into the scene of rooting my phone now and exploring what it can do. Maybe there's not much it can do that I am expecting, but I won't know what its all about until I do it and get familiar with it.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me out and tell me the best/maybe easiest method to root my phone? It is the HTC Hero with software build of 2.31.651.7 and Firmware version 2.1 -update1
If I am able to root it, which rom would you all suggest I try out as a noob? I don't really want the Sprint TV or Amazon MP3 bloatware. I would like to be able to keep stuff like my gmail, Androidd market, Sprint GPS iff it matters. I would also like to be able to do some customizing in a similar way like with Launcher Pro Plus.
Am I able to root, and if so, can someone help me to be able to root my phone today?
Thank you for your help and time,
Whiteice

If you want to theme (i.e. decompiling framework and rebuilding) you need a DeOdex rom.
GMail and the Market are in every rom and I am pretty sure Sprint GPS is installable from its apk.
But once you have root access you can get RootExplorer and Navigate to /System/App (if its in the same spot as the evo) and delete the bloatware from your stock rom.
I would also like to know the root method of choice for the Hero.
I need to root someone elses phone.
Edit: These might be worth a look.

So when I install a custom rom, does it install the Sprint APK file for me, and then from that point I choose whether to install it or not? If that is the case, does it do this will all the default files and that is how you choose what you want to keep and delete?

Most roms have their bloatware removed and usually gets put in a folder on your SD card so you can install what the rom dev removed.
If you install an OTA based rom it will usually have the stock apps with some of the useless ones removed.
But if you use an AOSP rom, like Cyanogen, there wont be any HTC or Sprint apps.
It's really up to the rom dev to decide what they want in their rom.
Once you flash the new rom you can use RootExplorer or ADB to delete those apps that you don't want.
Is that what you were asking?
Also I found another root method:

Yes I think you answered it. Now I just need to know how to root, and what to do when I root to load a custom rom. I also need to find out which rom would be best for me to start out with?
Again, I would like to be able to load some of the default bloatware and rid the rest and then load up some programs from the apps market.

I would recommend rooting and exploring your current stock rom first untill you feel comfortable with installing a recovery, nandroid backing up, using the recovery to wipe/flashing the new rom.
When I first rooted my phone I was told to
spend a week reading how to root.
Root my stock rom.
Spend a week reading about new roms and how to flash and backup.
THEN try to flash a new rom.
Asking "Which rom is best" usually will get you flamed, It comes down to personal preference.
Here is the wiki of roms for the hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=CDMA_Hero_ROMs
First rom I flashed on my evo was a Fresh rom.
It's pretty stock with some tweaks done to it.

And hopefully someone will be able to answer which rooting method to use.

Not a problem, I know where you're coming from. I was terrified to root when I first read about it.
I'll try my best to answer what I can.
And if Unrevoked works with the .7 version, It basically does everything for you so it's really simple.
If you can check your Radio Baseband version and it's one of these, unrevoked should work.
But we should wait for someone to confirm.

(Should be in Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Software info)

Again, thank you for your time and patience. I really want to do this and want to do it right. If something would go wrong, I wouldn't know what to do.
My radio baseband version is 2.42.01.04.27
Will wait to hear back or see if anyone can confirm it working.
What is unrevoked? I am guessing it's kind of a "one click" type thing that will root the phone, or is it more then that?
Thank you,
Whiteice
*EDIT* So I read your link and read up on it a little. I have a basic understanding of what it does, but again, this is all new to me
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think it would be easier to ruu back to .5 and root from there. I know for a fact that unrevoked will root .5, as its the method I used. Also, I've heard good things about regaw's root, too.
Just follow the directions EXACTLY and you can't go wrong.

Whatever happened to reading and trying? More importantly just reading.

Okay, I wouldn't go off just radio versions...I would go off software versions.
I posted in the other thread of his and HAD recommended manually with ADB but now I would recommend using SuperOneClick. I've been searching google and it seems to be the more popular one. Have yet to read someone using Unrevoked.

I think you have to sign a "No reading" clause when you register here. Or at least just to post in the Hero section...

I appreciate it, thanks for the sarcasm guys.
The reading part has to do with how bad my ADHD is. Thus the reason why I am trying to find something a little easier and not so in depth.
But thanks again for the sarcasm. It's much appreciate being a noob and trying to find help.

ADHD, huh? Then you might be better off with a one click method. ADB method, while not difficult, requires a fair amount of reading and exact typing, or you get a hero shaped paperweight. Superoneclick seems to be the option of choice.

Yes, its very bad, especially when it comes to reading. It is very VERY frustrating when you want to be able to read something but you can't.
Back on topic, thank you for the advice. Now to try and find out which one click method would be best for my phone.
Thank you again for your help and understanding,
Whiteice

He must not have read it when he joined. Hypocrite.
My Evo made me Swype this from the XDA App.
Try the xda wiki page for the hero... has all good information linked in one place.

Need help getting stock rom back

I have my phone rooted and long story short wiped my backup from the sd card of my stock rom.
I have been looking unsucessfully for a stock rom for my carrier online and have yet to find one.
I am on the MTS Allstream network in manitoba canada.
wwwDOTmtsDOTca if you want to see the carrier (sorry not allowed to post links cause I am a net poster)
if anybody could help would be greatly appreciated.
Am a bit of a noob to this but could this be a simple fix as in somebody just copying their existing backup from their phone and emailing me a copy so I could put it on my sd card and boot from that.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Do you need the actual stock ruu that came on your phone, or are you just wanting sense to be able to update prl and profile? If it's just to update, any sense rom can do that for you.

RUU=ROM Upgrade Utility Basically Referring to the "Stock Rom/Upgrade Rom"!
Also may I ask exactly what you mean by Simple Fix? Is your phone currently Functional? Or are you just looking to Replace what you Erased for Piece of Mind? Let me know... I'll try my Best to Help!
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
Yes I am very happy with Cyanogenmod. It is amazing and has made my phone run great. The stock rom it was running kept getting lots of lag and hanging if that makes sense. (pun intended)
Anyways I just want to get the original back because if I want to change phones or switch I dont know if my carrier will help me with the current mod on it.
Thanks for the help guys
