Need help getting stock rom back - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have my phone rooted and long story short wiped my backup from the sd card of my stock rom.
I have been looking unsucessfully for a stock rom for my carrier online and have yet to find one.
I am on the MTS Allstream network in manitoba canada.
wwwDOTmtsDOTca if you want to see the carrier (sorry not allowed to post links cause I am a net poster)
if anybody could help would be greatly appreciated.
Am a bit of a noob to this but could this be a simple fix as in somebody just copying their existing backup from their phone and emailing me a copy so I could put it on my sd card and boot from that.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Do you need the actual stock ruu that came on your phone, or are you just wanting sense to be able to update prl and profile? If it's just to update, any sense rom can do that for you.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Froyo-on-Hero action here!

I am unsure what you mean by RUU. I guess i just need the sense interface. That is the one I have lost.

http://www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/
here you go. u can download the update there. i believe u need HTC sync for it to work, i dont remember. but its all there for you. but this is for sprint. idk but if its the same htc hero then it should work. unless ur not on the HTC CDMA hero

RUU=ROM Upgrade Utility Basically Referring to the "Stock Rom/Upgrade Rom"!
Also may I ask exactly what you mean by Simple Fix? Is your phone currently Functional? Or are you just looking to Replace what you Erased for Piece of Mind? Let me know... I'll try my Best to Help!

Yes I am very happy with Cyanogenmod. It is amazing and has made my phone run great. The stock rom it was running kept getting lots of lag and hanging if that makes sense. (pun intended)
Anyways I just want to get the original back because if I want to change phones or switch I dont know if my carrier will help me with the current mod on it.
Thanks for the help guys

Please help me to root my HTC Hero today..

I would like to get into the scene of rooting my phone now and exploring what it can do. Maybe there's not much it can do that I am expecting, but I won't know what its all about until I do it and get familiar with it.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me out and tell me the best/maybe easiest method to root my phone? It is the HTC Hero with software build of 2.31.651.7 and Firmware version 2.1 -update1
If I am able to root it, which rom would you all suggest I try out as a noob? I don't really want the Sprint TV or Amazon MP3 bloatware. I would like to be able to keep stuff like my gmail, Androidd market, Sprint GPS iff it matters. I would also like to be able to do some customizing in a similar way like with Launcher Pro Plus.
Am I able to root, and if so, can someone help me to be able to root my phone today?
Thank you for your help and time,

If you want to theme (i.e. decompiling framework and rebuilding) you need a DeOdex rom.
GMail and the Market are in every rom and I am pretty sure Sprint GPS is installable from its apk.
But once you have root access you can get RootExplorer and Navigate to /System/App (if its in the same spot as the evo) and delete the bloatware from your stock rom.
I would also like to know the root method of choice for the Hero.
I need to root someone elses phone.
Edit: These might be worth a look.

So when I install a custom rom, does it install the Sprint APK file for me, and then from that point I choose whether to install it or not? If that is the case, does it do this will all the default files and that is how you choose what you want to keep and delete?
Thanks,

Most roms have their bloatware removed and usually gets put in a folder on your SD card so you can install what the rom dev removed.
If you install an OTA based rom it will usually have the stock apps with some of the useless ones removed.
But if you use an AOSP rom, like Cyanogen, there wont be any HTC or Sprint apps.
It's really up to the rom dev to decide what they want in their rom.
Once you flash the new rom you can use RootExplorer or ADB to delete those apps that you don't want.
Is that what you were asking?
Also I found another root method:

Yes I think you answered it. Now I just need to know how to root, and what to do when I root to load a custom rom. I also need to find out which rom would be best for me to start out with?
Again, I would like to be able to load some of the default bloatware and rid the rest and then load up some programs from the apps market.
Thank you again,

I would recommend rooting and exploring your current stock rom first untill you feel comfortable with installing a recovery, nandroid backing up, using the recovery to wipe/flashing the new rom.
When I first rooted my phone I was told to
spend a week reading how to root.
Root my stock rom.
Spend a week reading about new roms and how to flash and backup.
THEN try to flash a new rom.
Asking "Which rom is best" usually will get you flamed, It comes down to personal preference.
Here is the wiki of roms for the hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=CDMA_Hero_ROMs
First rom I flashed on my evo was a Fresh rom.
It's pretty stock with some tweaks done to it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681856
And hopefully someone will be able to answer which rooting method to use.

Ok, I like your idea about rooting with my stock rom first. I just need to figure out how now to root it.
I may be bugging you today if that is ok. You seem pretty helpful, and with doing something like this for your first time that you are not familiar with, well help is what I will need
I have also subscribed to your other thread you linked to. Hopefully something, at least for me, easy will come up to root my phone.
Thank you again for all your help,

Not a problem, I know where you're coming from. I was terrified to root when I first read about it.
I'll try my best to answer what I can.
And if Unrevoked works with the .7 version, It basically does everything for you so it's really simple.
If you can check your Radio Baseband version and it's one of these, unrevoked should work.
But we should wait for someone to confirm.
(Should be in Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Software info)
HTC CDMA Hero, running radio baseband versions
1.04.01.09.21

Again, thank you for your time and patience. I really want to do this and want to do it right. If something would go wrong, I wouldn't know what to do.
My radio baseband version is 2.42.01.04.27
Will wait to hear back or see if anyone can confirm it working.
What is unrevoked? I am guessing it's kind of a "one click" type thing that will root the phone, or is it more then that?
Thank you,
Whiteice
*EDIT* So I read your link and read up on it a little. I have a basic understanding of what it does, but again, this is all new to me
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think it would be easier to ruu back to .5 and root from there. I know for a fact that unrevoked will root .5, as its the method I used. Also, I've heard good things about regaw's root, too.
Just follow the directions EXACTLY and you can't go wrong.

Okay, I wouldn't go off just radio versions...I would go off software versions.
I posted in the other thread of his and HAD recommended manually with ADB but now I would recommend using SuperOneClick. I've been searching google and it seems to be the more popular one. Have yet to read someone using Unrevoked.

I appreciate it, thanks for the sarcasm guys.
The reading part has to do with how bad my ADHD is. Thus the reason why I am trying to find something a little easier and not so in depth.

ADHD, huh? Then you might be better off with a one click method. ADB method, while not difficult, requires a fair amount of reading and exact typing, or you get a hero shaped paperweight. Superoneclick seems to be the option of choice.

Here's a guide on how to properly provision your hero to metro. It's for the evo but it works for our phones as well. I also have a nandroid backup of my hero that I set up to work with metro. It doesn't have any of my info as this exact scenario was what I was planning on using it for. Why a nandroid instead of a rom 1) too many people asking dumb questions. 2) I'm lazy and working on a few other things

A nandroid is a backup of a rom made through a recovery like Clockworkmod or Amon Ra. You need to root your phone and install a recovery to make or restore a nandroid. You can check out this post in the development forum for more information on rooting and the recoveries available for the Hero.
Hope this helps

First off this post does not belong in the Development Section as it has nothing to do with Developement, but should be in General or Q&A. Try going here and follow those instructions on that thread. That should revert you back to stock Sprint 2.1. Just know that all info on your phone will be deleted.

If you want to return your phone to its original, stock, unrooted state, just download and install the RUU. Assuming you're running windows, just plug your fully charged phone into your comp and run the exe.
I believe you can also update profile while running nfinitefx45's stock rom.
For future reference, non-development questions like this really belong in the Q&A section of XDA.

[Q] Advice on phone set-up

Hi everybody
Ive had my first HTC phone for a few weeks. Im running 2.3.3 with hboot 1.16. I have rooted the phone and bootloader unlock with HTCdev, therefore I am still S-ON. Running cyanogenmod 7.1.
I have a few questions regarding my device which hopefully you can help me with:
1.(when final versions are released etc) Because cyanogenmod 9 is be based on ICS, can I actually just install cyanogenmod 9 like I did with 7.1? or would I have to somehow upgrade my stock rom to ICS and then install cyan 9? Do I ever have to update clockworkmod?
2.Theres a lot of talk about gold golds when I look on forums especially when people have certain things wrong with there phone. Is it worth me making one just incase something goes wrong with my phone? Or can this not be done, im not actually 100% sure about these tbh.
3.Are there anyways to speed up the phone like apps etc. im thinking about moving all my apps to the sd card as apparently this helps? I also have SD maid pro installed to help clean it up etc I run that once a week. Any other apps that are useful?
4.Is it worth me getting s-off by downgrading my 1.16 to 1.13?
5.With iphone I ran a program called ultrasnow to carrier unlock my phone so I could but any simcard into my phone and it would work. Can this be done with HTC? Im currently locked on optus.
Sorry for the questions. Ive just came from having an iphone for the past 4 years, so all of the HTC stuff is very new to me. But hopefully one day ill be able to help people when they ask questions like I have done today. I will give thanks etc to answers.
Thank you for your time on helping

You should be able to just flash the cm9 rom same as cm7. I'm sure if there was any special requirements they will be stated in the thread when it arrives to our phone.

A goldcard is used for flashing a stock rom from a different carrier. Not much point making one until its necessary

I think moving apps to the sdcard may actually decrease performance as the internal phone memory is faster than sdcard. Unless you have Installed apps to near the phones capacity (which you may have being a new user ) I think its best to leave them where they are.
A good way to increase the phones performance would be to overclock or install a more efficient kernel. When I was running cm7 on my phone I found Enki v0-alpha to be awesome.

I'm unaware of any unlock method for this phone on gingerbread. Are you prepaid or plan? Prepaid can get free unlock code if you recharge an accumulated $80 (or $90 I cant recall exactly)
Thanks for the reply. ahh im pretty good with my apps tbh ive pretty much just downloaded the ones i used on my iphone on a daily basis except the ones that are only available in england (im travelling atm).
My phones is ok with phonecalls and sms, but its not very often i have full reception. A lot of the time when i am holding my phone it will go down to 0 bars. Its in an otter box communter case as well. Would different radio's be able to fix this issue? If i was to s-off obviously. And thanks for the kernal info, ill have a look into them. Not that i understand them atm but a bit of research should help.
And when i top up on the 9th i will be on $90 so i will go into optus and see about getting it unlocked.
Thanks for your help
About sim unlocking, I went to ebay and found a seller who pays the hefty fee for access to all unlock codes for different phones, by carrier. The unlock code is associated with the "EMEI" number of your specific phone.
It cost me about $20. My phone will accept any sim card fine. (Won't connect with a few carriers that use unique radio frequencies.)
My phone originally came from Bell, I got it used, and the above method let me put my Fido simcard into it.
Edit: oh, but if you get it free, oh well.

speaking of kernals, if i was to flash a customer kernal. In order to get back to the original kernal would i have to reinstall the ROM or is there a way to delete it as so to speak?

Inside your rom's zip file, there's a boot.img. This is the kernel. You can flash it in fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if i reflash the boot.img like i did when i initially installed cyanogen, wont my rom go back to how it was when i first installed it? Meaning i have to re-install all my apps etc etc. probs a noob question tbh, but ive never had to do anything like this yet.

No, the boot partition contains no user data.
Thats great thanks.
now one more question then ill stop annoying you haha.
I want an application of some sort that will allow me to decide which apps can connect to the internet and which cant. As i would like to block some apps from accessing the internet, unless i allow them to? any ideas?

[ROM][WIP] Flashable Stock HTC 626s Debloated 2.27.651.6 (Sprint/VM/Boost) (9-2-16)

Info:
This is a custom stock rom that is only for sprint devices (Sprint/Vm/Boost). It was made using SuperR's Kitchen. It is rooted and I tried to removed as much as I could. This is just a work in progress so there will probably be more that I will remove and will replace some of the apps with updated and better versions based on user input. Also included for those that wish to make their own rom is an decrypted rooted stock. I have tested these extensively, but as always make a full backup before flashing and do a full wipe just in case. I am not responsible for any damages or loss of data that may occur from flashing these roms.

Let me know if there are any problems/request you have I'll try to do my best to fix them as quickly as possible.
I would like to thank @Captain_Throwback for all of his help in making this rom.

Nice! I'm downloading now. Thanks for putting in the time. Can't wait to check it out.

Let me know how it goes. I still have some work to do on it. Wasn't really sure what some of the files were. I'll be running more test to see what else I can remove and still have it boot. Wan't to get this as small as possible. If I removed anything that breaks something important let me know. As I said I'm not a dev and this is my first attempt.
No doubt. I have no problem putting it through the wringer. I'll let you know if I find anything, as well as any fixes that may work. I'm stoked to get back to my 626 and get to flashing!
I'll keep an eye on this. Just got the phone in the mail and noticed the extreme amounts of bloatware. Can't wait to root Dx.
Everything seems to be functioning correctly so far. Nice, lite and responsive. Flashed well, maybe 3 minutes total to complete. Boot up took even less. As of this post, no FC's or hangups found.
Solid rom! Thanks again!
Finally a rom for the sprint variants! I'll be giving this a try, downloading now. I hope it solves the low memory problems....

Removed most of the apps that were causing problems. Have another version that I am currently working on that will have the updates included and a few more apps removed. Only problem is this phone is very hard to make flashable roms for. Most attempts end with a boot loop. Still not giving up though.
A few things I have noticed: first is the HTC Account apk was missing so I couldn't sign in to install themes. I fixed that by downloading it from Google Play and making it a system app using rom toolbox pro.
Secondly I'm not sure if our phone has a magnetometer (compass) I would think it would have one. But it's not working.
Other than those 2 issues, this is a solid rom. Good job man. Keep up the good work.
I'm trying to get viper4Android to work but it keeps telling me my busybox installation is broken which it isn't.
Might wanna see if you can include busybox in future updates. Just a suggestion.
Oops, sorry noob here, got the 626s desire but connected to the bell network. if this is a sprint rom i guess i got to go back to rooted stock? The rom boots but hangs at activation. am i correct?
Unfortunately until someone comes up with a rom for your variant, you'll have to go back to your original rom. I hope you made a backup before you installed this rom.
I have the boost mobile variant and I still can't get twrp to work only Cyan recovery anyone know anything about getting two to work I used captainthrowback
Maybe I should learn how to read better. Is new so started off the bat with nothing on it so no backup I did with it. Worst case is I'm screwed lol.

You might not be screwed. Try searching the HTC website for an Ruu for your carrier. Once you find it lock your bootloader, then let it run its magic. Should return you back to stock.
@Sinister Drake I removed a lot of HTC stuff as I didn't think most people use it. If I do remove something you really need and can't find let me know and I'll re-add it.
As for busybox it does come pre-installed. Why some apps find it and others do not I can't really say. Doing a busybox check does show it's there.
Now as for the compass that is a issue that worries me. All my research says this phone has one, but it doesn't work even on my recovery. I need to know if it was something that worked on stock or if it was just false reporting by HTC, so I can narrow down the problem. It shouldn't be a problem with my rom as it is taken directly from the RUU, but I cannot be for certain until I get more feedback.
You know I screwed myself and went to quick because I had it rooted with twrp and oh look debloated firmware without paying attention to the Carrier, Doh! You know what silly, I called HTC Canada because bell is a Canadian outfit and they apparently don't supply ruu's like the states does. Oh well my bad 200 smackers later and a new phone. I guess on the bright side I can root it lol. Maybe one of the excellent developers will somehow create a bell version.
New version = https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzHOZHL6ZwXhRWxZNG4zc3lDSWc Removed an extra 200mb now total over 600mb freed. Also, updated the OP with the list of apps that have been remove. As always if I removed something you want and can't find let me know I will add it back in. Been using this version for a few days and found no errors, but make a backup just in case. Report any error you find I'll do my best to fix them.
Working on updating the apps to free up even more space. After that I'll be replacing some apps with lighter versions. Once I get any significant build I'll post it.
@kindlefire39 hopefully you can find someone else that has this phone in your region to make a backup for you. Once you get that you can easily use suprr kitchen to make a debloated version.
Is it possible to backup my new phone and use super kitchen? Or am I out in left field? I could be the first one with a bell mobility variant.

Once you flash a rom it overwrites the one you currently have installed. That is why it is good to make a backup before you flash. Out of curiosity have you tried to flash Captain_Throwback's rom? Its for metropcs but if you can get your phone to boot you can call your phone company tell them your phone is on a different carrier and you need the codes for the phone to work on their network. If you do get it to boot some things might not work, like the wifi, but it can get you through until you can get a proper rom/backup. Try posting in the help section asking for someone to make a backup of their phone. Heck even try asking anyone you know that has the same phone if you can borrow it for a bit to fix yours.

When I installed the rom I did not see Busybox, I installed it from google play. I'm still trying to figure out how to get viper4android to work to no avail. Maybe you can add it as a system app with the rom. With that being said, I've learned that another thing you have to do to get it to work is to use the selinux changer. with a quick google search you can find it elsewhere to download since it is not availble on google play anymore.
I do have to give you props though man, you're doing a fantastic job developing this rom whilst not being a developer. Kudos to you brother.

Is it possible that you could provide the apk for the HTC clock widget? I really dig the flip clock style. I can install it myself, I just dont have the apk for it
Sorry what I meant is I got a second phone because HTC Canada couldn't help. I just bit the bullet. So with the new phone can I make a stock backup or through twrp than backup? If I have a stock backup, than I could custom it and delete apps that you did for yours in your list.
