Switching Between 2 roms w/o wiping.

Just wondering if there is a way to have 2 roms on your phone at the same time and being able to switch between them. I am working on some app dev with googles new app inventor and I seem to be having all kinds of wierd stuff so I want to flash stock for using app inventor while keeping my current Zen Hero in tact so I can just switch back when I am done. I thought there was some kinda rom manager but I wasn't sure if it made you wipe before switching to another rom.

About the only option you have is to nand backup your current rom, wipe everything, flash the rom you want to work with, boot it up and let it load, boot back into recovery and nand backup that one. Then you can nand restore between the two without wiping. If you have a2sd enabled you will want to do backup with ext.

How do I select which nand backup I want to restore. Normally it just restores the last backup and I dont have a choice.

Put both of them on your SD card in the nandroid folder, inside the sub-folder that is your serial number. You may want to rename those inner folders to something other than just that long time/date string so you can more easily tell them apart.

Yes but when I select Nand backup it does not give me an option to choose which one I want to install it restores the last backup i made. So if I backup the new rom and then try to restore the old one it will just restore the newest backup...is there a way to choose?

Also if you have renamed the folder and put a space in it that could cause a problem so you might want to remove the spaces.
BTW, I see you are from College Station. I'm a fan of the Freebird burritos down there.

Do you mean when you select "Nand restore"? You shouldn't be selecting Nand backup if you are trying to restore a previous nandroid. Also, what version of recovery do you have?

It sounds as if you have an old recovery on your phone. Maybe 1.2.3, which will only let you recover the last one. Download and flash AmonRa1.6.2 from here or find darchstar's recovery. With those you can choose between all of your backups.

You can edit the names of the folders that are located inside /nandroid/(device_name). The folder name is originally named after yyyymmddhhmm or something similiar. Just rename them with no spaces or symbols, then you will know which one is which.

[Q] Make an image from a rom

Hello all,
I'm wondering if there's any way of make an image from my phone, with all the softwares and data already installed and configured (just like Macrium Reflect do on Windows). Just like a backup, so if I have any kind of problem, I just have to flash my .zip into the phone again.

Have you tried ClockworkModRecovery?

Fruit cake maker is a better solution for your question. Plus if you name the .zip it creates pg58img.zip and place it on your SD card root. Then you don't even need cwm.

just make a backup through CWM menu, it will backup EVERYTHING on your phone and save to clockworkmod/backup/..... in your sdcard. The backup included few .tar files instead of a single .zip, but the result is the same --- you can restore it (overwrite everything) to your phone at anytime.

When you backup with the recovery menu(power+volume button simultaneously pressed until u see the android picture), you will find this backup files either in the EXT SD card or the Internal SD depending the CWM version, in the clockworkmod/backup. All you have to do is to get into recovery mode and restore.....it works perfectly

Phone Re-booting continuosly

**** ****. I was messing around with the options in Titanium Backup Pro and selected an option that said that i can remove a few apps that have been linked to my ROM and free upto 80 MB in memory. It had something to do with Dalvik Cache. The software said that the phone will restart after the process. But the phone gets stuck at the HTC Quietly Brilliant Brilliant" white screen and re-boots. I tired Pulling out the battery, Wiping cache, Factory reset using CWM but the problem continues. What do i do? The phone is hardly 3 weeks old. Its still S-ON, rooted and unlocked at htcdev.com

Can you not restore a nandroid? Or try flashing a rom that doesn't need s-off like CyanogenMod 7.

Yeah i tried doing that. But get this error message in CWM:
Code:
Couldn't open directory.
No files found.
The Backup is in a folder "2012-02-12.06.04.17" and this folder is in the sd-card root. Do i have to copy the files in this folder to the root as well??
Edit: I forgot to mention that the above nandroid backup folder was saved in my computer and the sd card on which i had made the backup initially was involved in multiple formats during my futile attempts to gain S-OFF ..

You shouldn't have to. Was the backup created in cwm? Have you checked that the files are in the folder? What option were you using to restore your backup?
Another option would be to installed a custom ROM.

I guess if you are using CWM, the folder will not be on root.
As far as I remember, it use to be in some folder named CWM or ClockWorkMod something like that.
I guess the folder "2012-02-12.06.04.17" should be under "\clockworkmod\backup\" folder.
Not quite sure as I am using Ext4 recovery now.
But guess someone around here should tell you the correct folder structure.
And, I guess if you could try to mount card on your computer you will be able to see and modify the folder and put it in right place with correct backup directory.

I think i have to create a few folders since the path that CWM is looking for the recovery doesn't exist. Can you tell me the correct path so that i can create an identical location to copy the backup to??

It'd literally take you 5 mins to install a custom rom? And then in theory your fine will work perfectly. Then just set it up and create a nandroid.
When I had problems I formatted the SD card and only left the CWM files on. Then it restored/worked fine.

way2shree was correct in his post about the file structure. I think you need to do a bit of research before you do any serious damage to your phone.

Like i said the SD card on which CWM made the backup was formatted many times. Completely. So i had copied the folder with the backup to the computer.[Newb mistake. I realized the hard way]. And no the path is not \clockworkmod\backup\. Thanks anyway shree. Also i think CM7 is the only 1 that can be flashed with a S-on phone. so ill keep that as a final option since i still like sense.

I looked all over the place and found only this \clockworkmod\backup\<date> . Made both the folders but still not recognized. Can anyone confirm that this is in fact the correct path??

Phew. Atlast got the backup restored. THank you guys for all your help. Looks like i wont be doing anything android related for the next MONTH till i at least have a general idea of wth im doing.

[Q] Please Help!! (TWRP BACKUP)

Please help me! I was on Sense 5 rooted with twrp installed. Decided id try out the new CM 10.1 for the HTC ONE. So i backed up my system, data and everything else and proceeded to install CM. Decided it wasnt for me, went to TWRP, went to restore and there are no files there? What happened? I can see I only have 6GB storage available so the file is there somewhere!! How do i flash the backup? i read about a twrp utility or that the file structure is off?

UPDATE: When I go into a file manager, the backup from today is there.. it is in TWRP> BACKUPS> HT34JXXXXXX> (2013-05-14 @ 8:06 AM)
and inside that folder are the usual backup files. BUT IT STILL WONT SHOW UP IN TWRP WHEN I PRESS "RESTORE"

Reflash recovery, and see if now work.
I've restored yesterday my backup and no prob with TWRP.
And search your file in sdcard/0
If it will not work, reflash rom.

Don't know if this happened but I had a galaxy s3 before I got the htc one and I understood that cyanogenmod is a 4.2.2 type of rom and we have a 4.1.2 rom. A lot of peeps in the galaxy's forum would have trouble going back to touchwiz roms because the say flashing a 4.2.2type of rom partitions the memory files differently so then the 4.1.1 stock or custom roms. You may have to somehow unroot the phone and "push" the phone back to stock using your computer. People had to do that before with the s3. Hope that helps maybe. I have to go to work now. Good luck

CWM can't restore TWRP backup.
If you backupped your rom with TWRP, this will restore it.
Did you try to see in sdcard/0?

This is in the stock cm10 file manager. This is the exact backup I'd like to restore but when I go into the recovery and press on restore, nothing shows please keep responding!!!!

For team win recover the files need to be in /sdcard/0 the number zero or it won't be recognized. Move the directory structure to /sdcard/0. Also copy the directory with the backup to your computer in case.
Can we see the whole directory structure of where these files are located? like /recovery/2012305/ or where ever it happens to be?

I just backed up the cm ROM just to see what would happen and now when I go to restore, the cm10 backup is the only one there and I can't locate it in file manager anywhere

Search the SD card for boot.emmc.win you should get two results one from the original backup and one from the new one. You need to get both the backups together. Also copy your original backup to your computer so you have a copy of it in case you need to wipe or something.

This is what I see... Someone please help, the backup I wanna restore is already I'm TWRP folder on the internal storage but no files show up when I try the "restore" option in the recovery

OK so did you copy your backup to your computer yet???? Well if not now would really really be the time to do that. Looks like there is a issue with how CM is doing the SD card and TWRP. So first copy the backup off of your phone. Should I say it again? COPY THE BACKUP OFF YOUR PHONE. Now go get the correct RUU for your phone. Run that sucker and restore the phone to stock. You will need to relock your bootloader. Once that is done put TWRP back on your phone and copy your backup to the phone.

Ran into this myself. Because of 4.2.2's support for multiple users, it segments the internal storage into pieces(i.e. 0 for first user, 1 for second user, 2, 3, so on). I didn't realize this and had to start from scratch.
Copy your TWRP backup(and anything else you don't want to lose) to your computer and delete the 0 file. Re-add your files to the internal storage(be sure to keep a copy on your computer). Then reboot into bootloader, fastboot erase cache, reflash, and reboot into recovery. Don't let the CM10.1 ROM start up, otherwise you'll be doing it again.
Alternatively, use the All-In-One toolkit to adb sideload a non-CM10.1 ROM onto your phone, delete the 0 folder(after transferring to your computer what you don't want to lose, of course), reboot recovery, and attempt to restore.

This is the same problems people with the GNex came across moving back from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2 last year - you have to remember the internal memory changed and manually move fles to the non-0 folders! You guys should read up more before jumping head long into a new Android version!

OOPs--sorry this must be an HTC specific problem--sorry for poking my Samsung nose in...
Maybe I am not understanding the thread but--
In my Galaxy Note2 all my TWRP backups, and I have about 5, are all in ext.sd. card and I have used it to restore on several occasions--could be a device specific situation, but in Note2 it's fine to have them in ext.sd card.

Hello everyone,
I had HTC one that I sent to maintenance to be swapped for a factory fault. Before I send it, I made a full backup with HTC sync manager and saved it on my E: partition. When the phone was at maintenance, I had to install a new windows because it crashed. When I received my new phone, I installed HTC sync manager and copied the backup files to HSMbackup directory.
The problem is that sync manager says no backup available for the device and I really need to restore those data because this is the only backup I have.
Please, can anyone help me???

Did you just reinstall windows or did you perform a factory reset on the computer? If factory reset, you are basically SOL.

There are some data recovery programs out there you can try, but it all depends on whether data has been overwritten. Try Recuva.

I just re-installed windows on C: and didn't touch anything else and excuse me but what do you mean by SOL??
And FYI I still have the backup files on my computer.

OK. If all you did was reinstall windows, then your back up files should have already been in the correct directory to use the restore feature. Why did you have to move the backup to a different directory? Just trying to understand, not trying to be a prick.

No, because as you know the default directory is on C: but the backup files were saved on E: so, I had to copy the files to the C: directory.
And even when I selected the E: directory, sync manager couldn't identify the backup.

I am sure you've checked and double checked to ensure the path to the backup is exactly as was laid out at the time of backup, correct?

Suppose you can't do that then. I'm at a loss here, bro. Hopefully someone smarter than me will be along soon. Right @clsA? I would highly suggest that to make things easier in the future when it comes to backing up to skip the proprietary HTC way and just go with a standard Nandroid backup. You really can't beat that kind of backup, though it will require you to root your device. I know that might sound scary, but rooting this phone is so so simple. You can still run the stock ROM and all that, but Root access really makes the One shine. Just my 2 cents.

I'm really thankful to your help Mark but i'm really sad about the media files I lost and I really downloaded Wondershare Mobilego to backup if I needed. What do you think about this program? Is it good??

I'm not real big on HTC Sync for anything really. But try this.
use htc sync make a new backup to it's new location
then rename all you old backup files to the new backup files names and overwrite them in the new location
now try and restore them.

Glad to TRY to help. [emoji2] I think Wondershare is an OK option if you are not rooted. My preference would be Helium for unrooted backup, though. Like I said, though, you really can't beat a Nandroid backup when rooted. It literally is a copy of every single file on your phone in the exact state it was at the time of backup.

I tried and copied the folders from the old backup to the new folder created after I made a new backup and it has overwritten 132 files and tried to restore.
the restore worked but the media files weren't restored as I hoped.
What are the steps would you suggest??

Is the device Stock? Is it on the same rom and firmware that you made the backup on?
