Hey all, recently my search button randomly presses itself. No, I dont see the color flash or what ever you see when you press a button but at least 2 or 3 times a minuet it will act as if I have pressed the button and search will come up... Some sort of new glich? or is my phone going defective? What do you think?
ROM firefly 3.0 that i have been using since it came out, so like a month with NO problems what so ever. Reinstalled FF, still did it, will try a new flash, if that doesnt work will go to stock. and if that doesnt fix it I will get it warranty replaced.... but Im hoping its not hardware...
???
This happened to me! Try reflashing the kernel, or using a different one. Might help
I noticed that when my cappy has a fingerprint or smudge on the search key, it magically will press itself. I also had to modify my invisi-shield to not cover the touch buttons. It happens less now that its not on them, but it still happens.
It was happening over and over and I looked at it and theres a smudge, wipe it clean and viola! This was quite annoying when I was using a rom with the camera mod that redirects it to the search key. The camera was constantly opening, had to run the "fix" to revert it back.
Hope its just as easy as that for you, I was able to duplicate the problem on 3 cappys so far.
this could be a moisture issue. yank the battery and drop the phone in a bag of rice for a day see if that helps. if it still happens flash to stock if it still does it after that its a hardware issue and you should get a warranty replacement if thats an option.
a search would've answered this as i personally have answered this question a few times, also this is a question, for future knowledge those are posted in the Q&A section.
by that do you mean put it in a bad ontop of rice or literally stick it into a pile of rice ( wouldnt that get into the phone)? sorry for such a noob question.
Put the phone in the rice. None if it is small enough to get into the inner workings of the phone but it is AMAZING at soaking up all little bits of moisture.
Would be willing to bet it is a moisture issue. I have the same problem no mayer what rom I am using
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Mine does this quite a lot as well. Most often when the phone is warm while charging. I've noticed holding it in a different position helps diffuse the problem as well. Must be a hardware defect. :-\
so are the chances good that the rice will take care of it? Strange, I never shower or use my phone in wet area's.....
I have squaretrade... do they swap it out or what is the precedure for getting a new phone from them if it doesnt work if you know by chance, if not, Ill just google it on the website

hi my friends..
I have bought my captivate but I have an issue about home button and sometimes to back button.
When eveything all right I using my captivate but suddenly home button starts fllicking .. flicking and 6 last app pop up opening.. and that isnt stopping until I touch any buttons .. also sometimes back button working itself and turning back the page.. but imposible one is home button flicker itself :S
my captivate has 2.1 eclair.. maybe 2.2 froyo fix it ?
please help me about this issue how do I fix it
Your capacitive buttons are playing up. Mine does this when there is high humidity and the like. I've heard people on the forums have dealt with it by using a blow dryer gently or placing into a bag of rice.
Perhaps open it up if you are handy and give the capactive areas a good clean?
thnaks your opinion but I dont want to open it for now if anyone know how to fit it instead of replacing it please help ( if 2.2 fix it I will donwload it ?
Try This
Hardware issue, not software or firmware
Hair dryer and/or bag of rice will remove moisture causing issue
Swap out phone for new one
I was read someone upgraded phone and fix it
Don't believe this is a hardware issue. This started happening to me immediately after flashing Perception, and it has persisted for weeks.
Lots of people reporting it, but no definitive solution.
so what can I do instead of replacing
My search button was randomly activating itself many times a day. After I flashed the paragon 5 rom it hasn't done it again even once.
Sent using XDA App
ımm I hope after the flash to fix it
I've been having the same problem since flashing Paragon 5. Even with 6 I'm still having the problem, I do believe it is software based. I've noticed it gets considerably worse when the media player in on/in the background.
I have this problem. I find if I hit power button and weight like 3 sec before swiping the glass lock, the home button wlll not flicker. Not sure why. But it works. Still really annoy would like a fix.
this is not a hardware issue
it is caused by the way the services.jar functions. which controls the bottom lights. some roms have the back lights on/off/different variables which is why people are reporting this with different roms.
Still no resolution to this? It's becoming more of a problem. I honestly doubt it is due to moisture...
Agree on being software issue.
I flashed Paragon 6.0 yesterday. Now I no longer have this flicker which is a problem with both Andromeda and di11i's rom.
OP never did post what ROM he is running.... So dunno if it is software or hardware related based on info provided so far.
What ROM are you running? Stock? 2.1 or 2.2?
Also.. have you tried the rice idea? It will get rid of moisture and won't hurt your phone. Worse that happens is you've had your phone in a bowl of dried rice and nothing happens
If you are running a custom ROM - try either re-flashing the ROM or flashing back to STOCK.
Also how many apps are you running? I would check your app list and see if maybe one of them went wonky on your and try un-installing it.
If none of that works? Take it back to AT&T - the lights down in the bottom shouldn't flicker unless you wanted them too. I know the only time I've seen that happen is when I pooched a ROM flash and had to restore it.
NOTE: THIS SOLUTION IS POTENTIALLY DAMAGING AND MAY NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE
PROBLEM: touch screen acts erratic, notification bar keeps opening, screen appears to be touched by someone else continuously (Ghost Touch), and parts of the screen DO NOT RESPOND TO TOUCH.
MY OWN SPECIFIC CASE: I had the Ghost Touch issue for 3 days suddenly without intro, which often used to go away after a reboot or two, then phone worked normally after I removed the battery and left it in a dry area (in a closed drawer between books, no air entering, very dry atmosphere), however the RIGHT SIDE of the screen (Search button, rightmost letters [L and Delete and sometimes ENTER] do not work. If the phone is in normal landscape, you cannot open the notification bar by dragging it normally.
DIAGNOSIS: for some people, the problem is more severe. The Digitiser itself could be malfunctioning and has to be fixed, while for others it could be a true problem with the screen itself. However, for MANY OF US, it is a problem of HUMIDITY. The humidity sensors are causing the phone to act like that. Some say part of this problem happens because the way the keypad affects the phone internally as you open and close it a lot.
SOLUTIONS:
1- To be safe: send the phone to the shop. Ask them to open the phone and apply an extra layer of insulation, in case the digitiser and the screen are okay.
2- If something is faulty, replace it at the shop.
3- MY OWN SOLUTION: based on something I read many times, the solution was to apply DRY HEAT for at least 45 mins. What I did, based on averaging out many experiences I read online, was to remove the SD Card and SIM, remove battery, I heated up a toaster oven for 10 minutes, waited until the temperature was at about 60-70 degrees Celsius, SHUT DOWN THE HEAT, put the phone on its screen on a plate, screen facing down and covered by a cloth to protect it from direct contact with metal, then all inside the oven. The oven is a relatively big one, so phone was AWAY FROM A SOURCE OF DIRECT HEAT. I closed the lid, then every while 15 minutes I would heat the oven for 40 seconds to maintain the temp. This is LIKE (ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION) leaving your phone in the glove compartment of your car while its parked in a sunny spot, to find it really hot in the morning and tough to touch for a while. TO CONTINUE, after the phone was out of the oven (I can't believe I am saying this), I left the phone overnight in a dry area for 8 hours (could need less time). Then, I put everything back in, plugged it, and THE PHONE IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!
NOTE that solution number 3 could affect your keyboard buttons if heat is too much. It may cause the glue holding the keys to melt a bit. Be delicate with your keyboard after you restore your phone.
Again, I only did this YESTERDAY. With the exception of some keypad stickiness, the phone is working perfectly now.
I hope this was useful

EDIT: Today is the First of May, phone is still working without a glitch

SECOND EDIT: Phone did it again for 2 days. Applied the same method, and it worked again. I think partially it happened because I was in a very humid location.
That didn't work for me, I had no option but to replace the touchscreen/gorila glass.
I love the idea of toasting a milestone
Thought with all my aggression against Moto, I think I just might leave it in there

I have to admit, I cared litte whether or not this actually worked. I just wanted to toast it But it did work, so
Pretty tempted to try this out, I think I will when I have free time.
My phone had the dead zone problem for 2 months now, but in some very rare cases, like when it's a very hot day, the screen will work normally for a minute or something. Then it goes back to dead part. I assume this would fix it?

If it DOES indeed work on hot days, then it means the phone is not entirely dead. But I would suggest you do something less drastic first, such as the Glove Compartment method. No responsibility though
If you're trying to remove moisture, you could also try putting it in a baggie of crystaline cat litter (NOT the clay kind!) - this stuff is sold at a MUCH higher price as a way to save a phone from water damage, but it's the exact same substance. Does a great job removing moisture. It's the same sort of silica gel that's in those packets in medicine/vitamins that says "Dessicant - do not eat".
Or you could just put it in a sealed bowl with raw rice for a couple of days... this is the best and cheapest way (and then you have the silicon "grains", the ones that you find in shoe boxes or computer parts boxes).

Pretty sure that rice doesn't do anything, I don't know how that started as a suggestion, but its not better than anything else; its not known to be absorbant, but the silicon is.
I've tried the method but the right segment of the digitizer still doesn't work.
My biggest issue with regards to "lack of responsiveness" are the 4 capacitive buttons. Pressing the Home key is always hit and miss. I know I hit it all the time because I can feel the vibration feedback but it only goes to homescreen 50% of the time.
Will also be testing this out as soon as I have the spare time. My screen started acting up after I accidentally put my milestone in a small beer spill at a party Hopefully this will work out for me too!

Luckily for me, I was still under warranty, heh. Cause I had insurance. This is my second Droid this has happened to. Hopefully my replacement won't do the same thing.
How many times did you reheat the oven? I tried just once and it didn't help. My phone has been having this problem since January.

I feel I am on a cooking show
Well, depends on your over. Mainly I was trying to maintain a temp varying between 50-60 c. Mostly 50, but sometimes 60 to up the ante a bit and make sure things stay warm. 30 minutes at least. However, I have to say that I did this twice in 6 weeks, and after that the phone just died again, and I found my warranty card and sent it there to be fixed, and they fixed it, but ruined something else.
If you have the warranty card, take your phone and send it to them Someone told me the method worked and the phone has been good for quite a while, but most of us seem to re-experience the issue after a while.
I've been having these issues for a few days now too, and I think I know why. I've been using this Milestone for 4 months now, and I never had this problem until a few days ago. What I noticed yesterday was that after some acting up, the phone started working properly again. So I ran Touch Test. And I noticed that if I pressed really hard on the top side of the phone(where the logo and the ear piece are located) it started acting up again. My first impression was that the glue holding down the gorilla glass was loose. So I left the phone as usual on my night stand and then I tried the same thing with the pressing on the same area. Guess what? It didn't happen again. Now there seems to be no problem. So I tried to remember what happened yesterday before the screen started acting up, and I remember talking to my wife for a while when I was in my car. Yesterday was a pretty hot day and I was a little sweaty when I talked to her. Now since only that specific part with the earpiece was causing this issue(I tried pressing equally hard on other areas without any problem my guess is that the insulation between the earpiece and the touchscreen has been breached. Maybe because of all the sweat that went in there in time. You know the salt and acids in the swear are known to melt things, and poor quality glue is among them.
How to fix this? I do not know yet, but I do have a good idea that I'd like to share. I want to buy a screen protector foil, and put just a little band around the ear piece. That would probably lower my in-call volume, but since the Milestone is very loud anyway I hope it the quality of the calls won't be too much affected. After that I'll use it in normal conditions again and see if the ghosting happens again.
try completely formatting your SD CARD/PARTITION.
& then reinstalling using (FAT 32/EXT 2, 3, or 4)
sometimes traces from the previous ROM might interfare with touch codecs (maybe)
just trying to help. had similar issue & this is what i did.

Thank you for that Solution.
It fixed the Issue of my friends MS without other problems
I'll have to try and the oven methode again. My phone has started to really act up again.
I've tried to install new roms, wipe ect. and it doesn't help with the screen.
Have anyone tried to replace the digiziter? They are pretty cheap on ebay
My milestone started freaking out just an hour ago. No more warranty here but I'm not brave enough to do the oven method. Had anybody tried the Rice alternative?
is there ANYTHING (other then re keying my volumes buttons) to make them any better.. some times (less then 15% of the time) they are fine... the rest of the time...they just plain suck.. some times it literally takes 10-20 seconds of pressing the back button for it to actually work sitting there tapping rubbing anything for them to do anything... of the few gripes i have with my captivate its the BIGGEST (followed probably by battery life and lagginess when installing apps, but that can be forgiven just dont bother using the phone while its installing apps lol)
I'm so sick of the buttons.. i've had the phone since well july 18 i think... the first day it was released i ordered it the say it went on att's web site..
i've very tempted to install something like button savior or something.. but dont like teh idea of those on this "small" of a screen.. those arnt bad on my nook color but....
i have also tried a few different roms.. firefly,cog,CM7 a bit ago,perception.. using continum now. love the netflix app lol
I have problems too with my back button on my captivate, it lacks sensitivity.. I wonder if this is a hardware issue... I'm running stock for now since my captivate has no 3 button combo either..
I got my captivate at the end of July so probably first batch like yours and the only problems i have is either lagging witch would only be a second or two with heavy usage or not hitting them good so you probably do have an issue
Maybe dust or a small separation from the top of phone to the actual part where it recognises the touch, i know moisture can get in there and make three buttons hit many times randomly

Perhaps contact your local cell phone store (the one who sold it to you). Im sure you could just send it in for repairs :S
but beware.. ive read things about them screwing you over with rommed/rooted phones. I had no issue with that however
i got mine in September. I actually got two for my fiancee and I. The back buttons are a pain. Have you all experienced the search button popping up after you tried to hit the menu, back or home button? Happens to me all the time.
I first thought it was the Defender Otterbox since it comes close to covering them up but I took it out of its case and it still happens.
Wonder if I can claim this as a hardware issue and replace it? Anyone have any luck replacing a phone due to buttons?
I think I saw were someone was able to get it warranty replacement/ repaired because of the capacitive buttons acting up. It never hurts to try

We had two day one phones, build 1006. Never had amy issues until this month started seeing random shutdowns. Our capacitive buttons were fine, but we never used cases. We called att for replacements. We both got build 1102, and they have been fine so far. I would suggest call att or visit att service center if there is one near you to swap it out. I would also suggest using Odin one click to return to stock before returning them.

Hey everybody,
A few weeks ago my Captivate lock button stopped working. I am under the impression that it is a software glitch, but I haven't had time to play with it until now. I finally got the phone to show up on my computer (it was stuck booting into ClockworkMOD, but the select button didn't work. So I basically had a useless phone). I used Odin and flashed to 2.3.3 with Master Clear thinking it would fix the glitch and everything would work like normal again, but I was wrong. The lock button still doesn't work, and now I don't have my phone rooted. I want to flash back to stock Eclair, maybe that will fix this glitch, but I can't get into download mode. No button combo, no adb...nothing.
I'm here, because I want to know if anybody else has this problem, or if there is a fix that I can't find searching all over the Internet. Or if anybody knows how to root the Captivate without going into download mode.
Thanks in advance
Actually had this issue too. Searched Google and found it was a fairly common issue over time. I ended up taking the phone apart and actually cleaned the button on the main board with rubbing alcohol and a q tip, let it dry, and it's been working great since. There are videos on Youtube that walk through taking it apart. Not sure what you can do if you're not comfortable doing that, but that's what worked for me.

I was hoping the same thing too and just kept flashing and flashing with no avail. Pretty much just said screw it and went for it, haha.
NOTE: If you look in the videos you'll see that there's quite a bit of prying done on the top close to the usb cover. BE CAREFUL. I snapped that rreeeeally thin part off and had to do a weird superglue job to get it back on to even use the cover again. If you lose that little part, the cover slider won't stay on. Just a helpful warning as to not repeat my mistake!

How did you go about cleaning around the button? I have it opened up and cleaned to the best that I could see, but it still thinks it's constantly being pushed it. I can tell, because the phone turns on automatically when I put the battery in.

SAME thing happened to me too, haha. I soaked a Q tip in rubbing alcohol and just kept pressing the button with it so you can clean the inside of the button. Probably best if once you clean it, you hit it with a hairdryer for a few minutes to dry it off completely. My button slowly started working more as it dried off and works completely now. Just gotta make sure it's dry.
So yeah, get a q tip, soak it in rubbing alcohol, and press it to the actual button a bit, let it dry.

My milestone has led a pampered and then rough life of music gigs and festivals back and forth and decided to give up it's ghost (or give me ghost-touches if you will) due to a failing digitizer after a Dillinger Escape Plan gig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyzQgysUOdU I'm right in the center of the mosh pit hehe).
I've since decided that I'd save a little more money and get a Galaxy Nexus, even if I'd very much prefer a Droid4 if only to have a proper QWERTY slider phone. They don't sell them here .
Anyway, being that I've had to continue using my POS (can you tell I'm pissed) phone, I decided to look for a way to disable the touch screen and see how feasible it is to control with only the keypad and a few touches.
Which led me to these 2 apps
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.argotronic.touchblocker
Screen Lock / disable touch Argotronic
I've had it set up so that I can "lock" the touchscreen via shaking the device, and unlocking the screen in the same way. Despite disabling the touchscreen, the notification pulldown still remains active, so you can still pull it down and quickly tap yourself to whatever via the Dpad if necessary.
Now, of course, what use is all this if you can't swipe to unlock your ****?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jiubang.goscreenlock
Go Locker
This, apart from still bringing up the stock lockscreen whenever you restart your phone (this goes away after 1-2 unlocks), solves that problem by allowing you to unlock your phone via long pressing the volume rocker.
I've found that it is entirely feasible to run the phone this way.
Apart from that, I bid this community a farewell as what little regular posting I used to do has already dropped tremendously the last few weeks, and much thanks to everyone who has helped me and the developers. <3 Kabaldan, get a galaxy nexus please! though I'd suppose your talents would be better suited to another poor locked up phone.
This community helped me get quickly familiar with Android, and in particular with a "difficult" phone, and I will never forget this. I'll probably get a new digitizer + keyboard and just put it on my desk as a... completely over powered clock. or something. Hey, when was the last time you said overpowered when talking about the Milestone?
Oh, and to solve the gig/festival problem so my Gnex doesn't meet a similar fate I'll be getting an Xperia Active as a secondary phone since that **** is hard as nails, waterproof, small (3") and reasonably priced.
EDIT: Reason I'm not just fixing up my Milestone to continue to use it is because I've always suspected that my mobile radio is a little faulty as I've always had trouble maintaining 3G+ connectivity/sync, I figure it'll just crap itself out eventually. It's also, and I'm sure most will agree, starting to become painfully slow hahah.
If you are willing to take a little risk, after taking out battery, SIM card and microSD card, worm up your phone by putting it in the oven over a towel or on a blow heater (yeah, for real) for a few minutes. Then, you will need to put it in a dry place (like drawer or something) during the night. Turn it up in the morning and it shall work.. it worked for me anyway, I was sure my phone was dead and the digitizer was damn busted.. it must have been moist from the inside, so I used to have very annoying ghost screen..
good luck mate..

Hmm, I completely forgot about this!
I had done some drying with a hairdryer, I had originally noticed that the ghost-touches would get more severe if it spent an hour or two in my pocket, but completely forgot about trying it to dry it a different way. I'll put in a bag of rice tonight!
Thanks
Putting your device in the oven could really fix your problem. I've heard of this before in a different context (fixing gaming consoles..). What it does is fixing soldering points by melting them. Connections between cables and the board are then (hopefully) fixed again.
There are several methods including the oven, microwave, hairdryer and so on..
moe6 thank you for you post
will try the screen lock app
i have no need for the go locker, with cm7 you can unlock the phone by sliding the keyboard.
i have two questions
how can i answer/end a call easily without the screen?
is there any way to have a back button routed to the key board?
i use "search+z" to start(swich) back to my launcher
i guess i will try the oven trick but i really concerned if i will break the milestone completely. should survive a few week.

Good thing you thanked the top post, I would've missed your post otherwise .
Yeah I know you can unlock via keyboard slide but I have my phone caseless and its always in my pocket and it tends to slide open just enough to unlock it occasionally .
I answered calls by using the d-pad on the keyboard. Just tap it once and it should begin highlighting buttons on the screen, press d-pad center button to select. Unfortunately for you, my back button did still work as the "dead" part of my digitizer was on the right side of the phone where Home and Search is.
I think the drying tricks help mostly with ghost touches since I'd assume that the ghost touches are from small amounts of water/sweat/liquid. After drying it with a hairdryer, short bit in the oven and then stuck in a bag of rice, my ghost touches stopped 80% from what they were before. The digitizer is still dead on one side though.
Now all I need is a Droid/Milestone dock and a new digitizer so my old Milestone can live its life out as a very complicated desk clock
You can actually make it work real good without much issue. You'll need a CM ROM so you can enable the Menu to unlock option and then use v6 Supercharger Bulletproof Apps to lock the screen disabling software into memory so it doesn't crash and it doesn't run bad at all. Also, there is a really good app to remote control your phone from your computer so if you have adb and a data cable, you can get it working good.
Do you know what that app is called?

I personally use AirDroid, it's amazing.
