[Q] Help pls for a NOOB! :) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
I have recently bought a second-hand SGS, after having used Iphone 3gs.
All nice, a few issues, you could help me with:
1. Wifi - I get it only through AllShare, read this is the solution. Correct.
2. GPS - installed Igo - works sometimes, some other time it takes 20 mins to get GPS signal. Solutions??
3. Lag + enter an app (AngryBirds for ex) and it turns whole screen black for 1-2 minutes?
4. In Kies on computer via USB it says:
Current Firmware: PDA:JP7/ Phone:JPP/ CSC:JP6 (ORO)
LATEST: PDA:JS4/ Phone:JPY/ CSC:JP1 (ORO)
A bit of background. This phone was on Orange Romania, the seller unlocked it for me, I'm on Vodafone Ro.
If I update to new firmaware:
- do I lose apps and settings?
- do I get a Orange branded version?
Right now, no orange bloatware is installed.
Many thanks guys!

installed root checker - says its not rooted.
but i can still install games, etc..

If you read all the faqs, then you will have a good basic understanding of what is going on, and hopefully you will get the custom rom flashing bug and make your sgs fly! Its very simple but you do need to take time to gain base knowledge, and then you will truly come to love your sgs welcome

Ok mate, let's say...that was semi-helpful.
Need a bit of a shortcut to being enlightened about this.
This is not a custom rom. its the Orange RO Rom. NEed actual help understanding and deciding. Care to HELP? Thanks!

If its through kies then all should stay as is, but you might gain some bloat

As far as I can tell, I think you'd be better off rooting the phone to avoid any hassle the networks might cause you. In theory, kies should detect what network your on and update accordingly. But who knows, I've not come across this scenario before.

+ 1 strange dilemma, could go either way, I would just go for it with kies, worst case brick, back to sammy, blame kies, they fix

This is a firmware bug (never seen it happen before though). It may well be fixed with an upgrade

The SGSI has a strong GPS issue (the antenna is not good enough). Add to that, that Samsung screwed the firmwares in terms of GPS for a long time and you get what you are experiencing. The update might help some but it will be far from a complete fix.

The lag-issue is well documented. The safest and easiest lagfix is voodoo lagfix. Find the current version on the forum (also be careful what android version you are using, see Settings-->About Phone-->Android Version) and apply it. There are tons of guides for this (including one in my FAQ)

Well logic would suggest that ORO is Orange ROmania so yeah this will be a carrier specific firmware. However, since you aren't rooted, there is no way you could possibly have deleted any bloatware. Thus the update may give you a branded version but it is unlikely that this version actually contains any bloatware.
If you lose your apps and settings is not always easy to answer. Usually Samsung Kies updates do NOT wipe applications and settings. However, this is not something i would guarantee especially seeing how some Android versions are simply not compatible enough to transfer app installs (and especially settings). You may want to root your phone using CF root (or some other root-only custom kernel) and backup all your apps and settings with Titanium backup (from the market)
Edit: As far as I am aware the Unlock on the SGS is permanent. It should not be removed but anything. If it is, the unlock is available for free via tutorials in this forum

it works ok, thanks guys! deleted some settings, didnt delete apps.

If you ever have enough of the frustrating lag-tastic software that orange provide, I'd recommend rooting your phone using the EZbase method which give you a basic GB package to which you just install a ROM of your choice. Here's the link anyway;

[Q] When Froyo hits, will your root and everything with it be "restored"?

BEFORE you judge me lol : I'm a new android user, and I've searched and read through the forum and FAQs alike.
Sorry if this is already answered. I've tried the search and read through the FAQs already but there's so much information my head will just explode from it.
Also I'm a fresh android user (just switched over from the iPhone, yay?). I was a very enthusiastic jailbreaker for the iPhone when I was still using that device. Hence my enthusiasm for all things "hackable" for the Android device as well.
All my blabbering aside, I'm just wondering this.
When the Froyo update hits the i9000, your root and everything with it(custom firmwares and stuff?) will be "broken" and be restore as the "stock" Froyo firmware/build right?
Am I even making sense to anyone?
for new firmware, you have to flash it, and so, everything will loss, storage in your internal and external SD will remain but all you app, mod, messages, call log, contact, etc will be lost
like you've partition your home PC with app data saved in C drive and all other documents in D drive, when you reinstall your OS, you wipe off your C and install it again and everything in D should remain (if you do it the right way )
correct me if i am wrong
We won't know for sure, but the way HTC handles Froyo updates, there is no data loss.
But to reply OP, yes, root will most probably be lost. But ability to flash custom firmware should still be available. Afterall, in the first place we don't even need root to flash custom firmwares in the first place, at least on the SGS.

So this does mean that we will be able to get the froyo update through kies even though we are running rooted custom ROM?
alright thanks for the speedy reply and clarification. i have a lot of new terms i'll need to learn for the android now. lol.
sorry, OP, are you talking about an official Samsung firmware update using kies or the one using odin3?

Most probably not. You might have to return to stock firmware to get any updates from Kies.
But what's the point? The Froyo firmware will be available in the Odin form certainly.

i think the stock official firmware update. i'm also afraid that flashing a new OS for my current 2.1 will screw up any local settings. i need to do more research about this whole flashing, rooting thing...
shall spare you guys my questions. lol.
ironic from my previous post, i'll just like to ask one simple question.
since i'm a totally new android user, i should just wait for the OFFICIAL Froyo for the SGSi9000, update it and wait for some modified version of the OS, and i'll flash it over for a speedier, more accessable phone?
(i've read the FAQ a thousand times lol.)

the official one is somewhat released near September as i remember... so you have to wait till that time to do it.... i know nothing about flashing using Kies since I am a new user to android as well
but what i am thinking is: either you flash the current firmware (JP3, JP2, etc) using Odin3 or the official firmware using the Kies, the chance is if you brick your phone, samsung will also not responsible for it, so... unless you take your phone to the customer service, you are still risking
well you definitely know more than me lol thanks for the information folks. imma root my phone, don't think there's any risk ye. wish me luck lol.
I am gonna necro this thread since I am an absolute idiot.
It took me a few days just to understand that root is not the SAME as flashing. Finally got that through my head. Hence I can keep my stock JG4 firmware while having root.
But what happens when Froyo comes along. As someone already said, we are going to lose root if we update via KIES. Then what? Do we just use the One Click Root to root our phone again? (Right now I haven't found a reason to flash to a custom ROM yet.)
I am asking this since I am sick of losing all my data in my phone every time I have to upgrade my firmware, but if I can't root my phone afterwards, titanium backup won't work.

Is there a later version that i can put on, what are the extra features i will get out of it if so?
cheers
Uhmmm, no. There is other 10 firmware after your.

No, you lose it all :S
@op, Latest official firmware is JM1 (atleast it is in the UK)
ok then, can i somehow backup everything? how do the normal updates through samsung software work then cos im pretty sure they would kepp all your apps and settings when you upgrade?
what do you guys do?
when you connect your phone to your PC, select MTP and copy all the folders to a safe place on your computer's drive, then open up KIES and click contacts/calender and search for a backup button and back up. when you are done, close all the windows on your cpomputer except the samsung kies one, and click upgrade buttton. and when it prompts to close all windows, close ok, and in the next menu you will be prompted to upgrade.
on a regular scale your phone would restart and some downloading screen will appear, and some text will scroll by, dont worry thats just the phone rewiring itself..
you will know when its ready
*do this at your own risk, I wont be held responsible if something happens to your phone*
if i goto kies and select firmware upgrade it doesnt find a newer version :/
im in australia by the way and i bought my phone from hong kong so thats why i have the europe version i suppose
so ive looked everywhere, it seems i cannnot backup my apps. Does that mean i have to write them all down and install 1 by one again when i upgrade firmware?? what a pain in the ass
You can use Appbrain for starters...

Or use Titanium Backup to backup just about everything on your phone except home screen widgets. That includes app data, contacts, accounts and settings.
Why do you want to flash froyo? That's JP3, both unstable and slow compared to the latest 2.1 firmwares... Also, considering that you seem new to this you should start out with JM5.

You could use something like appbrain to bookmark them... or could write them down.
Can also use Titanium Backup to back them up and restore them after flashing.
Titanium Backup is on the android market
Latest for us Optus Australians is JG4 firmware wise (excluding other country firmware).
It makes a HUGE difference versus the stock JF3.
Hope this lends some assistance.
yea so i just flashed the froyo. its slow and a dogg lol. im gonna flash Jm5. any ideas what different between jg4 and jm5 is?
hmmm jm5 seems to be a bit slow as well.. whats the fastest firmware everyones using?

JH1 has been the fastest for me ... it is so fast that i didn't find a reason for the lag fix on that one.
I m on JM2 for now since JH1 has only english and some asian languages. I need french as my main language ... too bad
If your prefered language is english then JH1 is the one to go for

Unrooting my captivate to get AT&T 2.2?

I rooted my phone (I think) using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (I think). Looking at the phone with SUPER MANAGER the ENABLE ROOT function is NOT checked off. Does that mean my phone is not rooted? Is there another way of telling if my phone is rooted? I read somewhere that you need an unrooted phone in order to get the AT&T froyo 2.2 which hopefully will be released any day now. If I need the phone unrooted to get the update is there an easy way to unroot it that will not wipe out my programs and data?
Thanks for any help.

Ummmmm did you or didn't you run that program while in download mode? If you are unsure about that then I suggest you stop trying to mod your phone for a while and do some reading.
As far as being unrooted, no one knows. But I can tell you I plain don't care about an official release from att. I will continue to use roms that are developed by folks around here. they are better than anything that att can put out.

Pirate, I have been a member here for a long time, & been doing a lot of reading since I got this phone. I have never seen so many people get bricked and that scares me. I tried to root the phone just in order to make backups....I am a backup freek and for good reason. My last phone was the DASH 3G (still have it). I got the HTC Windows phone but only kept it a couple of weeks before realizing how far it has to go. The Captivate is definitely a lot better than anything i have ever had and it does not seem necessary to flash it in order to get all the nice apps running. I will be happy with the AT&T update if it ever appears. I have spent the past few weeks customizing the Captivate and will post my homescreen and a list of apps I am using.

How did you know its coming any day now.
first of all, 2.2 is not coming soon....
second of all, you ARE rooted
third of all, doesn't matter if you "unroot" (although you dont really seem to be a candidate for rooting anyway)...because once you're rooted or once you change the existing software (which you did with the program you listed in the first post between the "i thinks"), you negate the ability to recieve over-the-air updates from at&t
not that ANY of this matters, because the second those firmwares hit at&t phones it will be here and available to flash
not to mention we already have 2.2 available unrooted (the leaked version (might be different))
if you want me to send you the one-click ODIN file to flash stock 2.2 let me know
So it's a confirmed fact that rooted phones can't get the OTA updates?
nope only that some people have reports that they have not been able to update after they try and use atts update....

Thanks for your offer! I would love 2.2. Someone on this board said he works for AT&T said the update was coming on the 19th....guess not ))
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
4. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
thanks whitesox....I'll be keeping a eye on this thread.
Sorry Whitesox - I'm REALLY REALLY BORED at work today - hence all the forum spamming today
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
Yes
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
Unless you had them backed up somehow (say using Titanium Backup) - then yes.
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
Possibly - but if your using a Custom ROM? I've found that only those I have purchased show up under the Market and I had to hunt them all down again.
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
Not necessarily true - for Apps/Data you should be fine restoring. But I wouldn't recommend restoring any type of System Data as it would conflict with the update.
5. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
As in? Froyo specs means you will have additional functionality - the biggest one is Flash for websites. That and you will be able to run more applications from the Market vs. your current Eclair 2.1 ROM.

The official Froyo update has been coming "any day now" since September.
Just personal preference to run Titanium Backup - I know it works and I can use the free version to do everything I want or need.
Yea - I had forecasted we would see the Froyo OTA update from ATT with Source before Christmas - It does appear we won't see this update until sometime in 2011 - like um never?
At this point your stuck with either the OTA JH7 Update 2.1 Eclair - or you can get the Leaked Froyo (not recommended stock) or your plethora of Custom ROM's in the Dev forum.
I swear I think the Captivate has more custom roms then a room full of bunnies. I look at the other Galaxy S line and I see a few - but not as many to choose from here. This is the one major plus of owning a Captivate I guess
which one to get?
OK you and whitesox seem to know what you are doing. What is the best & most stable version to get?

[Q] GT-I9000 Market doesn't show up

Hello Everyone,
I just bought a GT-I9000 as I literally read many good things about it but I was in for a surprise.
I would firstly like to endorse that the video shown while registration was absolutely right. Now straight to the point, this device doesn't have market icon, perhaps due to the region. After reading and searching for hours I found out the rooting and upgrading to Gingerbread would solve my problem.
What mobile has:
Model Number: GT-I9000
Firmware version: 2.1-updated1
Base-band version: I9000JXJG2
Kernel version: 2.6.29 mobilus at the rate of SE-S606 # 2 (Doesn't let me post with the sign of at the rate)
Build number: ECLAIR.JPJG8
What I did:
1. Tried Kies to update as can be seen from Firmware, but nothing happened any further. Kies still shows that some version couldn't be installed successfully yet when I try to update it says I am using latest version.
2. Downloaded odin, gingerbread, CF-Root and when tried to start phone in download mode I noticed that it wasn't working either.
What I need:
That is only one thing, I need a market icon in my set so I could installed "Astro File Manager" to install all the apps and ".apk" files. Other than that its just a dog without teeth.
I don't care about latest or not, beautiful or not, fancy screen lockers etc as long as I can play vids, take pics, check emails and play games so it really doesn't matter whether I have Gingerbread, Froyo or Eclair, all I need is an icon...
Looking forward for your response.
Regards
PS: As i said I am a noob then I literally mean it, I was about to install CF root, and gingerbread by watching the videos and reading guidelines without having a know how of what is flash, what is CF root or root, what is CWM, kernel. In short I don't know anything.
I don't know about the policy of waiting patiently for the answer which could possibly ship one out of a problem but I am really looking forward to the xda crew to have a say in the issue I have been facing from a week.
Another thing which I forgot to mention is that 3 button download mode doesn't work either so what option I am left with given the circumstances.
Regards
Alright, I found market versions 1.1.2 and version 3.5.
Tried to install but it says problem parsing the package.
Which particular version am I supposed to look for? Secondly I found a market switcher, it got installed though gave an error "Root permission needed".
Downloaded z4root and tried to root temporarily. It kept on running for more than 20 minutes, hitting back simply brought me back to the menu but cell got hang. Rebooting which solved it but market which was installed is still behaving in the same manner.
Please anyone tell me some solution so I may not to roam from thread after thread.
Is it only me waiting from last three days to get even a single reply or its the routine here?
Calm down dude !

I apologize that no one, especially the previous poster, has offered to help.
If you don't have the 3-button download mode working, I have seen threads regarding getting that working, so I would search for that.
I have no absolutely why you can't install the Market. Where are you from? I suppose some places don't have access.
As for rooting your device, there are a few good options of doing so. If you would, please try as many as it takes until one works.
I understand your concern, and there is a lot to learn about the wonderful world of Android. Please do not be discouraged; you will be up and running in no time.
I wish I could help you more, but I'm certain a little effort, positive thought, and surely some (hopefully soon to come) brilliant advice will have your SGS working beautifully in no time.

Thank you so much for encouraging.
I have rooted my device using z4root but it wasn't much of help. Tried the 3-button fix but it didn't work either.
Tried registry patch for kies, it started showing that there is a firmware upgrade, but after uploading firmware the kies showed that, "This device's firmware can't be upgraded".
And if I use any previous version of kies with registry patch, it says first upgrade kies and then your firmware.
So I am again on step one. Is there any way to upgrade to froyo?
My set is from KSA, I am currently In Pakistan. As for the details, of broadband and version you may check the first post.
Anyone around please?

[Q] Speedmod + Stock Froyo, updating to Gingerbread

Hello guys.
Official Gingerbread is finally available on Portugal.
I have currently Stock Froyo + Speedmod installed on my Galaxy S, so how can i update to Gingerbread?
Can i just update and Speedmod will still work?
Or should i install a stock kernel, then update, then install the Speedmod (Gingerbread version)?
Or i shouldn't update at all?
i'm interested in this too,i'm in the same situation (froyo+speedmod) and i'm quite a noob
is there someone who can patiently give us an hint about that? also about a good battery life gingerbread rom?
This is what I did.
1. Disable any lagfix - convert back to rfs (very important).
2. Back up all apps, contacts, data, photos etc from internal memory. Use something like Titanium backup or Mybackup pro.
3. Update through Kies for an official update.
4. Install latest Speedmod kernel for gingerbread (not Froyo version). Use odin.
5. Install superuser from clockwork mod recovery.
6. From recovery, do a factory data reset (make sure you have everything backed up first!)
7. Restore previously backed up apps, data etc, sync with google calendar.
8. Redo lagfix from recovery (convert to ext4).
Battery life at first seemed all over the place but has now settled down and is similar to Froyo/speedmod.
The phone is smoother and faster to use.
Thank you a lot!
That's exactly what i'm going to do!
thanks colin! 1 thing: i read somewhere that if you deleted some bloat app from operator (e.g. o2) you wont be able to update from kies anymore. is that true?
my phone it's not a locked one but anyway i think i always got o2 apps on it (which i unfortunately uninstalled instead of freezing it) and carrier-related updates.
am i going to have any kind of prob in the process?

If Kies is showing that there is an update available then I think you should be ok.
If not then it is a case of flashing the whole firmware with odin. Open phone dialer and enter *#1234# and you will see the firmware details you are on now. It is worth making a note of these so you can reflash your current firmware if there is a problem.
okidoki i'll try that!
update:
PDA:I9000AOJP5
PHONE:I9000AOJP3
CSC:I9000VIAJP3
pretty old looks like o2 release. being my phone unlocked i never understood why i got o2 releases on it
so when i am not able to upgrade by kies i should reflash stock thru odin.
what parameter (pda/phone/csc) i have to look at to get the right firmware?
Everything is working better than ever, except for one little thing: The GPS.
Today i turned on GPS and tried to use my navigation software (CoPilot) and the GPS signal just didn't fix at all!
I ended by not using it, but i don't know why it doesn't work. It always worked wonderfully well before this update...

Still try kies first. If no luck there is a lot of info in this thread.

Make sure you can get into recovery mode first. Power button, volume up and home pressed all at once. Let go home button when Samsung logo appears.
ok thanks for the infos! i'll do it all when i can have a bit of relax,i am relocating so i need a working phone during these days
so i did it then!
flashed darky's resurrection 10.2 and then updated to doctorz rom jvt leaving ext4 enabled with no probs: another phone
just needs a good theme now..
