[Q] Frozen AT&T Samsung Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy,
1. I have a AT&T Samsung Captivate and it was modded with CyanogenMod 7 for the past few months. Everything has been working fine until last night when I tried to update to a more recent nightly. Long story short, my phone is now frozen. Meaning, when I power it on it stays on the AT&T World Phone start screen.
2. Yes, I've searched for other threads for a solution but can't find any that resolves my issue.
3. Yes, I tried to boot into Recovery mode. When I hold down the two volume buttons and the power button, the screen powers up like normal and the AT&T World screen flashes three times. Then I release the buttons but instead of going into the recovery screen it just stays on the AT&T screen.
4. Yes, I have that thing that goes into the USB port and forces the phone into Download mode and it does but it stays on that screen indefinitely.
5. I have to remove the battery to get out of each of the scenarios above.
6. I'd like to simply get back to Stock mode so I can wipe everything from my phone and start from scratch.
Anyone up to helping out a desperate, unemployed father of two who needs his phone desperately to look for work?
Thank you!

First, since this is a question is should have posted in the Q&A section.
Second, if you can get into download mode then you can recover via Odin or Heimdall
Just be careful depending on which bootloaders you have on your device.

If you can get to download mode, that's great - you should be in luck (btw, it's supposed to stay on the download screen indefinitely).
First, go here and get the one-click back to stock Odin.
Once you have it, get into download mode, fire up odin, and plug in your phone. Assuming you see a yellow COM:4 (or similar) message, you should be good to go.

Be careful - that link takes you to the odin with 3-button fix - if you flash that first, you could end up in a bad place.
Generally you should only flash the 3-button fix after going back to complete stock with the odin one-click to stock, and only if you need to repair a nonfunctional 3-button setup.

Yes I know I say that in the post, that you CANNOT flash the 3 Button Fixed Odin straight from GB Bootloaders.
YOU MUST flash Odin One Click first to get the Eclair Bootloaders, then that 3 Button Fixed JF6 to get your combo back for the unlucky people that lose it like me.
But on the thread note please stay with me, I posted the thread and the MegaUpload said it should only be another 10 minutes, then bad weather came through my area and froze the download link.
The download link for the full JF6 3 Button Fixed.tar file should be up in about an hour.
Sorry for the inconvenience

Thank You ! ! !
Guys,
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge that allowed me to fix my issue. I'm all set and running again in stock. You guys rock!!!
Best regards.

That's great to hear. Good luck on the job hunt.

[Q] Captivate Boot Loader Brick?

Hi Everyone,
I had previously been running the stock I9000 JK3 ROM on my Captivate with xcal's reoriented kernel. Today I decided to install the I9000 JL2 Rom from samfirmware.com.
I started ODIN, entered Download Mode, and flashed the ROM (in the PDA section) with no problem. After the flash had completed, the phone attempted to reboot, but there was nothing but a black screen. I tried every way I know to get into Download mode but nothing works. I don't even get the Phone--!--Computer image that I've gotten in the past when I've messed up a flash.
I've read that this kind of brick occurs when the boot loader is corrupted, and that the only way to fix it is to use a RIFF JTAG box. My question is: what did I do wrong? I flashed many ROMs before, all through ODIN, but was always able to get back to stock if necessary.
My research suggests that it has something to do with sbl.bin. Can someone enlighten me? How can I tell if a ROM will mess up my bootloader? Do ROMs that mess up bootloaders contain the sbl.bin file?
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
If your getting the phone / computer screen you should still be able to restore.
Use the following method to get into DOWNLOAD mode and then Odin 1 click back to stock.
Take out the battery,SIM, and external SDCard
Turn on Odin JH7 1 Click Back to Stock
Plug in your USB cable
While holding down the Volume +/- Button place the batter back in.
If you get the gray battery charging signal - you need to attempt it again. Should go into DOWNLOAD mode and you can restore your phone back to stock.
The SBL.bin is bad mojo if you fubar it as it has important things like being able to use your buttons to get into the different modes (download/recovery). I don't know what else it controls as I'm not a developer.
Also read this on the General thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
interesting stuff about the SBL.bin - so Flashers beware!
Thank you so much for the information. Unfortunately, I do not see the Phone--!--Computer icon, and I confirmed that the ROM that was flashed did indeed contain an SBL.bin file. The boot loader is most certainly bricked.
I really think a warning about the SBL.bin file should be stickied somewhere prominent, so other people don't make the same mistake that I did.
Thanks Again
It works for me

[Q] Phone, Exclamation Triangle, PC - No Download mode

I'm really sorry, I searched for solutions but didnt found one that fits my problem.
I'm a total newbie and ****ed up my phone in many ways. I started trying to install something it wasnt suposed to work on my phone (rom destinated to 9000 and stuff). I have a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000b (sold to latin amarica) and came from factory with android 2.2.
I'm now stuck with the black screen of death, no matter what I do I get this screen. It hapened after I tryied to install unsucessfully the original rom of the phone and odin presented me with an error.
Before I try any further I'd like your advices as how to procede regarding my 9000b. Pulling the battery out, putting it in again and holding either vol down or both volumes and either pluging the phone on usb or pressing power allways gives me the same result, the screen with phone exclamation triangle and pc.
So, before I buy a jig cable on ebay that will probably take 3 weeks to get here (Brasil) is there anything else I can try?
Please help me, I'm desperate and I dont want to take it to assistence, it would cost me much money and ruin all my courage in trying to use Roms.
Thanks alot and sorry for the bad english.
so did you have the 3 button combination before this happened ??
have you tried to charge the phone whilst powered off, then when the phone gets hot, try download mode then ? sometimes this works, as heat can help download mode work.
another thing that has worked for SOME people, is leaving the battery out for 10mins, doing the 3 button combo, and whilst holding the 3 buttons, insert the battery.
you could try these and see what happens,
And 3 weeks delivery for the JIG is a long time, couldnt you make one in less that 3 weeks.
If you can't get into download mode, you are screwed until you get your hands on a jig, simple as that. Just wait. Patience is a virtue.
Thanks in advance for the quick reply guys, I ordered the jig, estimated 20 days, usualy it takes the same amount from the central postal ofice to my home since they allways restrict packages from hong kong. I'm considering making one but I'm a total denial in eletronics.
I was able to get to download mode before this problem yes. I would just hold down vol and center key and then power. Now even when I plug it in to charge I get the screen with the exclamation.
Any more sugestions?
no other suggestions other than whats listed above
looks like you will have to wait for the JIG to arrive.
Loner-phone here you come lol
Then I have a couple of questions.
1) Since I plut it in directly on the power and still recive the same screen is the phone still charging? Or once the battery is over I'm ****ed up twice?
2) Is there any chance that the jig wont work or I in some way ****ed up my I-9000b permanently?
3) After I make/get a jig how should I procede? I heard about one-click odin, but apears that its for another model of phone, and since I got on all this trouble exactly for trying to do things to my phone that were suposed to be only for another model, I'm kind of lost.
Inputs?
Thank you all for already awnsering my questions.
1) the system is corrupted so the charging indicator will be too - thus leading to Phone ! PC image - this is the only image the phone can now produce
2) The 'JIG' has a 100% success rate - providing that the motherboard is not fried - which it isnt as it still shows an image
3) the jig is just a modified USB, just plug it into the phone whilst powered off and download mode will appear, and then you just attach your genuine USB cable and flash stock ROM thru ODIN.
azzledazzle Thank you very much for your patience, but since I`m a total newbie to all this, some of your awnsers I didnt understood fully, do you care explain me better?
Regarding question 1) The power indicator is corrupted, ok. But this means if my battery die out of usage it wont charge again or just that the indicator wont show that is charging but the battery actualy is charging?
and for question 3) Is ther any tutorial directed to I-9000 on how to use odin to flash a stock ROM ? like baby steps? After all that I'm even afraid to turn the phone on, so I would like to know exactly what to do. I`m cosindering asking someone with technical skills to help me on a home made jig.
oh im sorry, i get carried away sometimes.
1) i assume the battery will be charging yes. only the phone will not be able to show this due to the corruption.
2) when you have made / bought a JIG (link below) you ideally want to flash a Stock ROM, you can get this from samfirmware (link below) and also on this site is a tutorial on how to use ODIN, its fairly easy if you just read the instructions provided.
JIG: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551&page=3
Firmwares : www.samfirmware.com
ODIN download and guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
Its a miracle, somehow I managed to get into download mode. But I'm still a bit insecure
Here is the deal, I dowloaded a .tar file that alledgedly from my carrier and for my country. The tar is named JPA_JP3_JPA.
Inside the file there are cache.rfs factoryfs.rfs modem.bin param.lfs zimage
But what should I put where on ODIN if I only have PIT PDA PHONE and CSC?
And how can I discover if I should use pit 512 or 803?
Should I consider a master clear setting?
the file you downloaded is a full firmware compressed into 1 .tar file.
so in odin load the .tar file into PDA section and THATS IT !!
DO NOT USE PIT WITH THIS FILE.
press start and enjoy
PS do a factory reset after the flash

Hello all!
I've got my hands on a GT-I9000 today.
It's got 2.3.3 Android on it.
Wanting to install CM7, I was first of all trying to root it.
I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8, thus I downloaded heimdall-frontend and the "Hardcore's SpeedMod kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery".
When I put my phone into DL Mode and connect it to my Mac, I can't write the image to it.
Heimdall is failing with "Failed to receive device info response!"
What do you ppl suggest me to do now?
Thanks,
F.

Indeed I now managed to get Windows XP PC.
one trouble still remains: after rooting the device remains in an infinite reboot loop!!!
It only stops when WiFi is disabled.
Any help bout this?
Or at least any means to get back to a factory ROM?
I got 2.3.3 before flashing...
Thanks!
Try to flash the nightly again, should solve the bootloop-issue.
Or you can wipe cache/dalvik cache, this helped me too.

Just take the latest nightly. To wipe the cache/dalvik cache you have to boot into recovery (hold volume UP + home button + power button.

[Q] Noob Questions

Hey guys. Recently I tried upgrading my phone (Captivate i897) from the Paragon 6 (JS32.2.1) to the new Continuum v5.4.1. I was having trouble reseting to stock from Paragon for some reason. Every time I tried reseting, it would stop at a random spot and the entire screen would turn a random color. I eventually got it to reset to stock after many attempts and crossing my fingers that it would finish without erroring out. Following the guide provided on the Continuum thread, I read all about the bootloaders and how badly they can brick your phone. I ventured carefully, trying to read and reread every bit of info I could on how to not fail at loading the bootloaders. I did what the guide said and installed the JBV bootloaders. My phone reset and I got it back in download mode. Then I saw somewhere on the thread that I had to use the original Odin (the one with the Master Clear option) for some reason and so I tried it. While Odin was doing it's thing it froze (like normal) and turned the entire screen a random color. I didn't panic because that had happened many many times before and I tried to get it to boot. And found no luck. So I decided to break out my soldering iron and I made a jig! The jig didn't work at all . I then did further research and decided I must have messed with the bootloaders and there was no possible way to recover my device. I went to the store today and had my phone replaced because of some social engineering on my part and it was still under warranty. I brought my phone home and tried the jig and it worked like a champ. I think my problem is that I was confused on what the exact, step by step, 1 2 3 process is for upgrading from 2.1 to 2.3. Would anyone be willing to help me out and explain in detail what exactly I have to do to upgrade my phone to Continuum? Thanks in advance.
you have a ****ty usb connection. i would not even attempt odin if it freezes eveytime, your gonna end up with another brick.
is the usb cable for sure good? is it plugged into the back of the pc have you been using the same port, cause you should try a different one.
try a package without any bootloaders first, there is a link to a stock package without any in the continuum op, once you have a solid connection then try bootloaders. dont try anything with bootloaders until you have established a reliable base connection.
I am plugging it into the front of my box, and I have alternated the front two ports to see if there is any sort of change and found none. I'm just about to try the back ports to see if there is any change. In the Continuum thread, he talks about computers randomly messing with the usb connection. What is the cause of that and do you think that might be my problem?
Edit: That seemed to be the problem. I manged to reset it with Odin and it worked perfectly, followed by rooting it with the AIO Captivate Toolbox! However, I still am uneasy and needing guidance on the step by step process of upgrading.
Odin sometimes just decides to extend it's arm and give you the finger. But if it happens everytime it's an issue with either, your pc, your usb cable, usb port on the phone.
Follow the guides in the op, or...check out mosaic (not biased) thee instructions there are easy to follow, and there is a link to a download package that has pictures included to help along the way.
I'm reading the guides here and I may just be retarded, but I'm having trouble figuring out which Odin people are using. When they say "THIS IS THE ODIN YOU WILL WANT TO USE TO RETURN TO STOCK!!!! USE THIS ONE AND NOT THE 3 BUTTON ODIN. IF YOU NEED THE THREE BUTTON FIX JUST USE THE 1CLICK ODIN FIRST THEN USE THE 3 BUTTON FIX ODIN", what do they mean? (btw, the quote is a link to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989)
Odin one click, the one with just a start button and master clear button, contain BOTH bootloaders for 2.1/2.2 the .tar that has the three button fix only has the second bootloader, if you use that from gingerbread you will brick your phone.
So ... If you want to go back to stock USE ODIN ONE CLICK, don't even worry about what the other one is, as long as you use odin one click you are fine.

Ohhhhhhh ok. So I did the Odin 1 Click and it worked perfectly. Now what do I do about the 3 button issue?
Do you not have the combo?
All 3 buttons held till screen comes off, release power for recovery
Both volume buttons, plug in usb for download.
Alright, I'm confused once again. So I flashed the Odin 1 Click, but yet I still have the combo... Is the combo separate from the bootloader?
No, it's in the secondary bootloader. Sometimes, and only sometimes, odin one click's bootloader will not have the combo in certain build phones. It's just weird idk ... So the 3 button fix package was released with only a secondary bootloader that never loses the combo. But it doesn't have the primary cause when it was made it wasn't needed because the primary never got overwritten. But now that gingerbread is out both bootloaders have to be changed so using the 3 button fix package will mix a 2.2 and a 2.3 bootloader and brick the phone.
Btw the new gingerbread bootloaders have a new combo once you flash them it'll be
Vol up+ power = recovery
Vol down + power = download
Ok, so I used Odin 1 Click to go to stock, but I still have the combo. Does that mean I still have the secondary bootloader? And If so, what do I do? Also, thanks for the help so far.
Lolol you will always have a bootloader, or the phone wouldn't boot.
Since the combo still works for you, you are on step 1 of the instructions!! Have fun!
Read read read read read, before touching your phone.
I'm well aware of what bootloaders are and the importance of them. My question is that if I have the combo, in accordance with what you said, I have the 2.2 boot loader. Anyways, thanks for the info and clearing up the confusion!

[Q] Fuzzy TV Screen after flashing wrong Kernel

I can't get into Download Mode or Recovery mode... but it still turns on. I'll post screenshots if possible.

Ouch, so no download mode or recovery mode? Have you tried booting into download from ADB? if you don't know what adb is then don't worry about it. You might try seeing KIES recognizes it, if not, download any ODIN package and see if the ODIN recognizes it, if it does you're in luck! If not, then you might consider ADB: I'm no expert but I'm sure that when you have ADB there is a way to replace the Kernel Image for a proper one. Just out of curiosity, which kernel did you accidentally flash?
It has nothing to do with kernels, you have a GB ROM with Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders

The second problem is... it loops after the fuzzy screen. It only stays for 5-10 seconds then goes back to the ATT screen.
I do know what adb is and I've used it a lot especially with my girl's Mytouch 4g. It's just this was a big problem I haven't been able to crack.
I believe the kernel that was flashed was TalonDEV 0.5.1-RC1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18330648&postcount=5215
Edit: Odin sees it for the 5-10 seconds it's on... but since it's bootlooping... Odin doesn't have time to do anything further than file analysis.
2nd Edit: The battery status comes up when I plug the phone up when it's off... I know that probably doesn't help, but I figure I should give all the information I can.

Its the KERNEL.
If you have froyo bootloaders and a gingerbread ROM, it will still boot into the ROM and work. But on boot, the KERNEL splash screen is that distorted image in the OP, and also recovery is inaccessible because all you get is the distorted image. And as you should know, recovery is contained in the kernel.
If you're on froyo, and flash a gingerbread kernel, not only will you have the issues stated above, but you'll also likely be bootlooping, which is exactly the situation in the op.
OP.. You don't use Odin booted into Android, or in a bootloop. Its used in DOWNLOAD MODE ONLY.
Search for "usb download mode jig" you can make one, our buy one fur under 10 bucks. It'll boot it into dl mode in seconds.
Then go to the top of the development section, find a gingerbread package WITH bootloaders. flash that, THEN proceed with your original plan
Yes or flash gingerbread boot loaders and get recovery back, Then flash and appropriate kernel in cwm.
Hint: there is a button combination that you must preform to enable download mode it is posted several thousand times in the captivate section I would suggest go and find what it is.
Btw. The button combination happens to be posted in three or four of the stickies. And the forum rules say to read stickies before creating a thread or posting.

I've read them already. I told you I can't get into either mode. I know exactly what the 3 button combination and the download combination is for this phone and since the wrong kernel was flashed on it, it's apparently not working.
Hint: being helpful is great, but when you start talking down to people, you start to become an ass. When that starts to happen, it's best you be quiet and let people who want to come up with a solution to the problem speak.
Thanks.

[Q] Bricked phone? flashed SlimICS through Clockwork

hey all, i've had my captivate for about two years now, and for a while i used cognition, then for the last year i've been using firefly. firefly has completely destroyed my phone's speed and responsiveness, and i needed to clean everything off and start with a minimalist ROM. so i picked slimICS.
i'm still very hazy on the details and terminology of flashing ROMs, but i got two to work (i remember using one-click root thing in 2010, and then in 2011 i flashed firefly through clockwork) so i figured it shouldn't be a problem to install slim, which i figured would be my last ROM until next year, when i'd get a new phone.
so i backed up my stuff, tried to get into recovery mode with the 3 buttons (didn't work, unsurprising since it didn't work last year either), took out my SIM, went to CWM, and selected the flash rom option. this restarted the phone and sent it into recovery mode--except it was the stock recovery, and i couldn't select anything because i think firefly made the phone think it was the i9000 model from canada, instead of the i897 captivate, so it assumed i had a physical "ok" button on my phone (which i obviously do not). i tried the power button, the various capacitive buttons on the bottom, nothing would select any of the options, so i just took out the battery and put it back in. the phone immediately booted into the CWM recovery menu, in which i selected flash ROM, and scrolled down to choose slimICS.
i let it do its thing for a while, it jumped between the AT&T white logo screen and a screen with scrolling text for like 5-10 minutes, then just stayed on the AT&T logo screen for another ten minutes. i should have left it for maybe a half hour to be sure, but i figured the install failed. i couldn't get out of this so i pulled the batttery. and now the phone is bricked (soft i hope). if i hold the power button it goes to the AT&T white logo, flashes briefly for a half-second and goes back to the screen, then stays there indefinitely. no button combinations seem to work. does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks!
Since you backed everything up, I'd suggest flashing a stock rom via Odin or Heimdall to clean everything up before moving forwards.
You can flash a non-bootloader one to be safe, or if you want to make sure you can flash anything, flash a package with Gingerbread bootloaders.

how do i flash anything in my phone's current condition? it doesn't turn on fully. it's stuck at the white AT&T logo.
Turn it completely off (pull the battery, if necessary), then hold V+ and V-, and insert a USB cable. That should put it in download mode. Once you're there, you can flash a stock rom (There's a stick with those roms in the development section).

doesn't work. as i mentioned in the OP, i can't get into download or recovery mode or whatever. these button combos have never ever worked with this phone. for example, holding + and - and inserting a cable with ODIN open has never done anything. that's why i used clockwork.
Sounds like u r gonna need a Jig. If u are on a pc, click on my sig link below and there u will find a link on how to make a jig and/or where to buy one.

is that guaranteed to work? or is it most likely? or is it unlikely at this point?
The jigs that I have made myself in the past and as well the professional made ones that I have purchased have always worked to get me into download mode.
The jig is worth a try, I suggest you should
if I'm reading the op right, and if memory serves firefly was an I9000 build and button combos are different. My suggestion would get the Odin kk4 one click with repartition and WITH boot loaders from 4-2ndtwin's sig links, open that and while powered off and holding just the vol- button insert the USB that should do the trick. I9000 builds use different boot loaders with different button combos. Since you will be flashing a boot loader package be aware this is when you can truly hard brick your device. Be sure you have a good connection and cable before starting. If you still can't get into download mode I can +1 on the jig. The jig and 4-2ndtwins one click has saved my bacon more than once.
ok so i bought the jig, and good news: it gets me into download mode! yay!
problem: i don't know where to go from here. i've tried the following:
A. after getting into download mode, i followed the ODIN method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266, meaning i flashed the gingerbread bootloader update (nothing happened to the phone, which made me confused when i got to step 7., because i was STILL IN download mode), then flashed the speedmod kernel (which reset the phone, but it just got stuck in the "SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE i-897" white text on black screen, forever. i had to do a battery pull. turning on the phone goes to the same screen and then it freezes. trying to hold all three buttons to go into recovery mode alternates between that screen and the white AT&T screen, actually alternates, forever if i let it.
B. after that failed, i tried using the 2.2 Heimdall one-click (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172) but the file, when run, says
Code:
ERROR: Drivers Not Found
Installing drivers
but i still followed the instructions (except the instructions say "Install driver" but the actual button is "Replace driver"?) in any case, this does nothing. and then checking off "Flash bootloaders" and doing it again does nothing. the phone remains in download mode.
C. so i wanted to try one-click downloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, but nothing pops up on the ODIN window when i plug my phone in. i can't even do anything.
please help!
please, does nobody know what to do?
Take a look at the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread for some more things to try. At this point, it sounds like you need to clear all the phone drivers off of your machine and reinstall them.

thanks, that worked! (it was my laptop that was the source of the connection issues i think; i tried all that stuff in the thread, but when i switched to the desktop, all of a sudden ODIN recognizes the phone!) i got my phone to flash ODIN one-click. so now i'm back to stock 2.1 eclair.
however, much to my dismay, i still can't get into recovery mode to (re-) root. the three button combo still does the weird flashing thing, where the white AT&T logo shows up, then the screen goes to black, then the AT&T logo, then black... ad infinitum. how do i either 1) enter recovery, or 2) re-root the phone + get a nice, lean, fast, modern ROM on it without going into recovery?
so far this thread has helped me unbrick the phone, now all i need is to update it from stock!

I could be wrong but when you do the 3 button combo it sounds like you are continually holding the buttons which will cause it to keep looping like you describe. Starting with your phone off hold down all three buttons. The phone will show the white ATT screen. Then if you had a custom kernel it would show the kernel splash screen, in your case you said it just goes black which is fine too. Then you will of course get the white ATT screen again. As soon as you see the white ATT screen again release all the buttons and that should boot it into recovery.

i tried various durations of holding the buttons. none worked. 2nd AT&T logo, nope. 1st black screen, nope. 1st AT&T logo, nope.
Your gonna have to get ADB set up on your pc. Then... "adb reboot recovery" will get u into recovery mode.
